From Ray Richmond, who has been contributing to Deadline Hollywood’s TCA coverage:
The hot new (read: Simon Cowell-less) American Idol got rolled out by Fox on Tuesday morning at the TCA confab in Pasadena, with new judges J-Lo and Steven Tyler and new/old showrunner Nigel Lythgoe but without a man named Simon, the one named Cowell, arguably the nasty voice that has long stirred this top-rated drink for a phenomenon that enters its 10th season on Jan. 19.
First question of the day: Does anyone take it personally that everyone presumes there is a Hummer-size hole in the show to fill due to the looming absence of Simon’s bracing venom? “No,” insisted Randy Jackson, the only returning judge and now the undeniable veteran. “We don’t take it personally. Of course we love him and miss him, but what we’ve added with these new superstars is a lot. We’ve got a rock legend in Steven and a triple-threat in J-Lo.” This marked the first time in a public forum that someone has expressed “love” for Cowell.
For his part, exec producer Lythgoe expressed little concern over “Idol” continuing on its merry Number One way. “It’s an entirely new cast, and an entirely new show, but you need to evolve after you’ve been on the air for a decade, so it’s time,” Lythgoe said. “Simon’s leaving allows us to be creative and to shake things up.” Agreed exec producer Cecile Frot-Coutaz: “It was important that the show itself change, the direction, and that it wasn’t just a change in cast. You need to have the show match the new cast or you’re just casting somebody else’s show.”
Fox reality guru Mike Darnell also evoked a “What, me worry?” attitude, even after it was pointed out by a critic that Idol’s median age had crept up from 32 to 45. “I like to think the show has aged with me,” he noted. “But I mean, here’s a show that’s achieved Number 1 six years in a row. That’s bigger than M*A*S*H, bigger than All in the Family. What its achieved ia phenomenal. What this is about this season is keeping the show feeling fresh and new.”
The irony of that, of course, is that the new blood isn’t exactly brand new and fresh off the farm. Tyler has been rocking out since the 1960s. Lopez has been a star for the better part of 20 years. The thinking is that both are here not to replace Cowell but to burnish their own credentials as decent, likable people, not lay into amateur singers.
“We’re going to be very honest in what we say and do,” Lopez insisted on Tuesday. “Steven and I are both very spontaneous. I think he’d agree that we’re here not to break people how but to guide and help mentor them through the process…But I have to say, this has been a lot of fun, much more than I even thought it would be. I’m glad I made the choice to do this.”
“Why did I do this? Well, I’m not totally sure yet,” Tyler admitted. “It’s not just about singing but character with me.”
For his part, Lythgoe noted that there will be a renewed emphasis this coming season on not just wedding out the riff-raff but on “finding the next superstar. The performance part for me is more important than ever. In the new season, it’s more about searching for that eventual winner than stopping people from getting there.”
No, that was Simon’s job. And it doesn’t appear that he’ll be coming back anytime soon. We’ll have to see how that lack of a villain works out.

Steven Tyler looks like a Tranny. Creepy.
Mark my words, there will be a villain, and his name is Jimmy Iovine. He’s got a rep for being brutally honest, and in his role as mentor on the show, he’ll fill the bad-guy shoes, it’ll just be a very different pair than the ones Simon wore.
but he’s so awkward on camera. i don’t want to watch him. he looks odd. always wearing a hat and those horrible glasses. zero charisma.
Simon was not the “villain” of Americah Idol – he was the only voice of reason and sanity. It was sad to watch him “tone it down” quite a bit in the last few seasons. This show has been on a downward spiral for 5 seasons now and the only thing entertaining about the watching experience was waiting for Simon’s opinion, which was usually the only one that made any sense. Thank gawd for TiVo because I have been able to fast forward through all of Ryan’s moronic nonsense and the dribble from the other judges and just watch the performances and Simon’s responses. The exit of Simon was the final nail in this beat-up coffin and after 3 years of insisting I was done watching it, I can finally hold true to that claim. I won’t even be following it online.
I can’t wait to not watch American Idol next week.
Idol worked best when you had the original 4 duplicate a sense of family. Simon playing the taciturn father with a caustic wit, Paula as “the ditzy housewife” and Ryan & Randy as the naughty boys.
not break people? I’m sorry, some people need to be broken, they need to be shown that they cannot cut it and are better off as an accountant or life coach or whatever
Steven and the franchise needs to be mentored by Iovine like Lindsey needs mentoring from her dad. Steven has the most to potentially loose here but he’s been thru worse and survived (can you say the 80′s?) Iovine will NOT be a villain because he desperately needs whatever revenue this show can get him. He has watched his Bazooka turn into a pea shooter as his company can barely get out of their own way. Nobody at any label has the slightest idea of what to do to stop the bleeding. Labels still make money but not like they used to when people still bought CD’s/Vinyl. Iovine will release whatever sells.
Jennifer is not a triple threat. Every producer/musician who has ever worked with her knows she cannot sing. That’s why she plays no live dates…. no pipes at all. Come to think of it, I don’t know any directors or casting agents who thinks she can really act either. She needs this to work badly.
Randy, God bless him, has little to offer other than doing a decent job on a very big show. Although, come to think of it he should be commended for that because others have had similar opportunity thru out entertainment history and soiled their pants.
I have always hated Idol because for me it has consistently validated (which I like) the old way of signing musical talent. Although not always so (Nick Gilder/Milli Vanilli) the old machine was pretty damn good at weeding out the folks who just did not want it bad enough. Sure Idol can find people who can sing pretty well, but that is only half of the puzzle. In my humble opinion you have to have a burning desire to be a star, to risk everything you have. To move to LA or NYC and compete with the best in the world. Bringing the party to “your town” only helps those with the talent, not the desire. Kelly Clarkson has the pipes but not the emotional foundation to rest it on.
Well said. Folks will be tuning in not to watch these middle of the road, bland, no personality, mediocre singers. They will be tuning in to see the Tyler/Lopez show crash and burn. We already know how god awful Randy is(right, dog).
This season has “DULL” written all over it and I’ll be checking in to see it crumble before my eyes.
Nigel Lyhgoe is lonnng past it brother – just watch an episode of SYTYCD if you don’t believe me – sickening
Is it just me, or do J-Lo and Tyler look like before and after images of each other in that photo?
Thanks to Steven Tyler and his coterie of ass kissers and sycophants (Erin Brady, anyone?) this will probably signal the end of Aerosmith. His new management has him convinced he can replicate the solo success of Santana and this is just the first step. Look for the inevitable solo album featuring duets with Justin Bieber, Pink, Michael Buble and Sting.
“Dude [Steven Tyler] looks like a lady.” Yikes!
“J-Lo’s a triple threat”? What talent(s) would he be referring to? I don’t see any.
In 10 years the show gave us only American Idols Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood as true stars (plus a few others who came in second or lower such as Jennifer Hudson, Clay Aiken, Daughtry, Adam Lambert and Katharine McPhee, though McPhee seems to have squandered what could have been a Carrie Underwood-like career by phoning it in most of the time).
Other than that, the show has been painful to watch due to the absolute lack of talent paraded out every week.
Who the hell wants to watch Taylor Hicks or David Archuleta or David Cook (who can tell the difference?) or Crystal Bowersox perform? Who ever bought a Brooke White CD or waited in line for tickets to see Kris Allen in concert (he was the winner in 2009, I had to look it up).
In the meantime they play musical chairs with the judges (putting in Ellen Degeneres to be funny and entertaining, but who ends up sitting there with a stone look on her face the whole time).
If this show hadn’t started off strong with Kelly Clarkson, a real star who was truly “discovered” on a talent show, it wouldn’t have lasted 2 seasons (can you imagine runner-up Justin Guarini as the first-year winner?). Since then they’ve had a very few good moments and wasted the rest on crap.
We’re tired of it, and we’re over it. My prediction is Lopez and Tyler will be gone by next year, Randy will still be hanging on for dear life and the show will be canceled.
