EXCLUSIVE: The Kennedys may take an unconventional route to U.S. television screens, via syndication. The producers of the controversial miniseries, which was dropped by History earlier this month, are in talks with Tribune Broadcasting about picking up the 8-hour project starring Greg Kinnear and Katie Holmes. A rep for Tribune confirmed that the company has been in talks for the mini, declining further comment.
I hear that Tribune has made an offer and may actually land the mini, which is being shopped by producers Muse Entertainment and Asylum Entertainment. There are also cable nets in the running, but Tribune might have a leg up as History has a say in who gets the program and may not be willing to have it run on a direct competitor. “I’m not sure if History wants another (basic) cable net to air it so they might take less money to have it in syndication,” a source said.
History has to approve a buyer, as it did early on with premium cable network Showtime, which ultimately passed on the mini. DirecTV, which engaged in talks for The Kennedys but ended up not making a deal, also is not a direct competitor to History. (Meanwhile, I hear BBC America made a serious play for the mini but, even if History gives its blessing, sourced doubted the cable net could afford the lavish $25-million production as its offers have come too low.)
Tribune Broadcasting owns 23 stations, mostly CW/Fox affiliates, in 19 markets, including the Top 5: New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia and Dallas, as well as superstation WGN America, which is carried by cable and satellite providers. It is possible that, if Tribune strikes a deal on The Kennedys, the mini could also be made available to stations in markets where Tribune doesn’t have a station.
The Kennedys, which hails form 24 co-creator Joel Surnow, was reportedly dropped by History as a result of political pressure from the Kennedy family. People who have seen the mini call the cancellation an overreaction as they claim President John F. Kennedy is portrayed in a favorable light as a decisive leader during the Cuban missile crisis, proponent of racial equality and an all-around likable guy, with very little-to-no attention paid to his rumored sexual indiscretions.

Tribune has become the dark horse on a lot of programming deals. WGN america has become a true network while the TV stations are healthier than they were five years ago. The programming group headed by Shawn Compton deserves a lot of credit for even being a potential destination for this show. Please do a deal, I want to see this movie.
Yes, America deserves to see this truly great mini-series. Everybody’s work is fantastic i.e. Greg, Katie and the rest of the actors are incredibly well cast, perform beautifully, and the production values are first rate. Nice work Joel and team!
HISTORY didn’t cancel it because it was controversial. They canceled it because it was BORING.
That would be a slap at Shriver and Kennedy for trying to squash this. More homes get broadcast than History channel. This would be smart, more competitive to broadcast networks and out of history channels way. Go Tribune and all the other broadcasters involved.
History could just give it to Lifetime or Lifetime Movies. The bottom line is that its parents — particularly Disney — don’t want it on any of their channels. And if Tribune does a deal, expect the same kind of lobbying to start there too from the Kennedys and their cronies.
This would be more at home on a broadcast network, this is will be shown over 4 days.
Trust me, should they air the mini-series, you can bet your bottom dollar a sponsor boycott may materialize.
What kind of savy business women greenlight an expensive miniseries without doing their due diligence and unearthing any “connections/spoilers” that may stop their “baby” from getting airtime? Talk about an expensive mistake! And that being said, it obviously isn’t that good if Showtime has gone on record to state that The Kennedy’s is not a “premium cable” production, which isn’t that surprising considering the low rent/low budget shows on the History Channel that they are now bringing to Lifetime in hopes of “redefining the brand”-ha more like killing it.
I figured they didn’t want it because the acting was terrible, even for a tv movie.
The controversy was pretty much the only thing this mini-series had going for it in terms of getting interest.
Now I just feel kind of embarrassed for the show.
I have seen the first hour and the performances are excellent. Kinnear and Holmes are terrific. Barry Pepper and Tom Wilkinson are excellent actors – top of the line.
The problem is the script. It is boring and unfairly nasty towards the Kennedys.
Nasty could be ok, except that it is dialed up to ludicrous proportions. Boring is never ok.
It is fine that it portrays Joe Kennedy Sr as someone grasping for power and a jerk, but it unfairly portrays Joe and Jack in the same way and the family seems to not have any love. Clearly, we know Jack and Bobby loved each other and that this was a close-knit (albeit very competitive) family.
In one scene where older brother Joe turns to Jack (who is on crutches from PT-109 incident) and asks him, “You didn’t hear a Japanese destroyer coming up on you in the middle of the night? Your radar didn’t work?” – ridiculous, stupid and biased scene showing the negative skew that Joel Surnow put throughout this nasty piece of work.
This Kennedy mini series has been a hot topic since The History channel passed on it..but if another cable or broadcast network doesnt pick it up soon..nobodys even gonna care about it or watch it when it finally does premiere. A deal is taking way too long.
Pick it up, Greenblatt!
