Tonight, MTV and co-creator Bryan Elsley launch the Americanized version of the UK hit TV show Skins by pushing boundaries for casual sex and recreational drugs. What makes this unusual is that the cast is comprised of teens — not the twentysomethings posing as teens that usually populate high school shows. Elsley cast all unknowns, understandable considering Hollywood’s growing infatuation with discovering new stars. Of course, the Skins’ newcomers were only too happy to take low salaries for the chance to pop the way X-Men: First Class’ Nicholas Hoult and Slumdog Millionaire’s Dev Patel did when they starred in the UK version of Skins.
The U.S. version’s lead is James Newman who plays the Hoult-originated role of the manipulative ringleader Tony. James is the 18-year old son of Peter Newman, producer of indie films like Smoke and The Squid And The Whale. He was the only kid in that family not interested in acting, instead planning to fight in the Golden Gloves tournament before studying business in college. He spent his pre-teens haunting Gleason’s Gym in downtown NYC and boxing camps. (He was bloodied by fighter Yuri Foreman during a sparring session.) Newman was training hard to enter the 143-pound division when his actor/comedian brother Griffin first urged him to audition for Skins. (Griffin was too old). James missed the audition, but while away visiting colleges, his brother told him MTV hadn’t yet found its lead. At 5’7”, Newman is hardly a clone for the 6’2” Hoult. But he showed up anyway and eventually won the role.
“Not only was it my first audition, it was my first acting experience of any kind,” Newman told me. He delayed college to shoot the 10-episode season in Toronto. He also hung up his boxing gloves. “I didn’t read the full contract but assumed there was something there about not sauntering in to shoot the season with a broken nose.” Newman thinks he got the job partly because the whole thing was so improbable. “I would have been more nervous in a boxing ring because that’s what I wanted to succeed at,” he said. “At least when I started, I didn’t feel in a position to crush my own dreams if I screwed up. I’d just go on to college. Usually you’re nervous in the first audition and then you loosen up. It was the opposite for me.”
He signed with ICM and manager Paul Young, and now, like the rest of the cast, is waiting to see if Skins takes off and what it means for them. After months of heavy hype, it launches this week with two episodes airing behind Jersey Shore. Elsley said he casts on instinct and saw a natural edge in James that would help distinguish the series from being a clone of the UK original which Elsley created with his son. “It’s not giving too much away to say that this will be a much more vulnerable and easily-damaged Tony in the USA show,” he said. A recent ranking of young stars in Entertainment Weekly placed Newman #4 behind Rooney Mara, Adam Scott, and Megan Fox’s Transformers 3 replacement Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, but ahead of Tom Hardy, Michael Fassbender, and Alex Pettyfer. “There’s nothing for me to process,” James said. “How can you take it seriously when people haven’t even seen the first episode?”

The son of a film producer? Not that unlikely then…
I have had an opportunity to view clipsfromt he upcoming episode of skins. This is absurd!! to say the least and whoever these young peoples parents are they should be ashamed and investigated by their state as it is sad to allow you teenagers to “act” or be a part of such filth!!! taking clothes off and talking about sex and sexual parts is absurd!!! also, whoever the producers are they should be ashamed and called to the carpet about this “nasty and degrading show” before congress and members of the FCC. A petition should be started to keep this fith off of the air!! YUCK!!!
Are you kidding me?I’m a teen and I can tell you firsthand that the things on the show aren’t giving us any ideas…half the kids I know already do everything on the show and more…it’s not Disney(which by the way, yes,I still watch) but it is a fairly accurate portrayal of what really does go on in our lives(and I live in the nice part of town,my school has a national ranking).I’m not a slut or a druggie. And while this show is not for some people,I like it. It’s not “filth” it’s real.
I completely agree with you, Katie. Honestly, times are changing and so are the kids. I am sick of people ragging constantly on this show. Seriously adults, don’t tell me you didn’t do these types of things when you were younger, or even watch for that matter. It’s not exposing us to anything that we haven’t already seen, that is if the people watching it are of the appropriate age like the disclaimer states. I happen to love this show and there is nothing wrong with me. I’m not addicted to drugs, sex, or alcohol and I love this show. It shows diversity and the lives of troubled teens who in the end make it through as friends. Friendship, after all, is the main message portrayed.
Finally, somebody speaking sense. As a teenhager, I have found that this show is a more accurate portrayal of high school life than many other programs out there..
Adults need to stop freaking out.
And if you want to start critisizing our age group, remember: you’re the ones who raised us.
Thankyou. it is a good show. It shows people what teenagers really go through in life.It may be nasty to people but they may not know what us teens go through.
Wow…is someone forcing you to watch this, as you refer to it, ‘filth’? I’m 20 and yes, I can see that this show may push some people’s buttons but this is America, and I’m old enough to know that it’s TELEVISION. And as long as your child was raised well and has good morals, then I promise this show will not infect them with anything. My mom isn’t fond of the show, but she trusts me. I actually quite enjoy the show. And if you don’t, then I have three words for you-DON’T WATCH IT. Jesus, ever heard of free speech? If sarah palin can tell you to shoot people, teenagers can have sex and do drugs on TV.
Seriously… the kids i know do a heck of a lot worse than what this show does… by a long shot…
it doesn’t matter if its on tv or not, teenagers are going to rebel!there gonna be wild, and go to party’s! If anything, they should watch the show and observe how this behavior affects the teens in it… and don’t be such a hipocrite! i’m sure you or people you knew did the same things when you were in high school.
Jeez
I do it all the time. So it’s not absurd lol if you have a teenager, he or she probably does it too… so GET THE F OVER IT. THIS IS THE 21ST CENTURY FOR GODS SAKE.
Then dont watch it.
OMFGGGGGGGGGG james is so hotttt i love the show already!!
i personally love this show and i love james newman <3 marry me
I hope the writers actually cater this for REAL American teen culture.
The beauty of Skins first series (I’m a Brit) is that everything which is depicted (it is set where I live in Bristol) is true to that particular part of the country. That is what makes it classy is that it feels honest.
I’m getting the feeling that this is going to be brainless carbon copy (just like Shameless).
don’t be so hard on Shameless. It’s pretty good so far, but next episode is apparently really different from the british one, and people are saying is the best one.
SKins, however, is a carbon copy, which makes no sense, considering its premise of showing the realistic life of youth.
Well, seeing as us Americans don’t get British television or the opportunity to watch brit Skins or Shameless, don’t you think its fair we get an opportunity to have our own rendition of it?
I’m afraid without any changes in the script, it’s the epitome of carbon copy.
Oh shut up, you british piece of crap. Listen I’m american and let me tell you a couple of things. This is why us americans, think of you british people in the rudest way possible because all you guys do is sip fucking tea. Get the fuck over it alright. We’ll be copying much more of your shit if not everything.
FUCK THE BRITISH!
The promos for this look awful and anything but gritty.
The promos are incredible! Are you insane???? Or just over 70? And who says gritty anymore? File that one away with “edgy” adman.
Love British series, scared of American series.
I’ve read a review of the first 5 episodes, and they say that while it doesn’t really add anything new or very different to the UK series, it is pretty good.Especially for viewers who haven’t seen the original. So I’ll check it out.
Also, the US version of Being Human debuts tonight.
This whole remake malarky is getting silly now.
Being Human
Inbetweeners
Life On Mars
Office
Outnumbered
Shameless
Skins
All of these shows are in the English language. Where have all of the innovators in the US gone???
What’s next?? Doctor Who? Peep Show? Eastenders??
They already tried The IT Crowd. It was horrible with Joel McHale.
I haven’t seen the first episode, so I can’t totally judge, but from the commercial spots and heavy ad campaign, this seems like a show that is completely glorifying teen sex, drugs, parental neglegence, and illegal behavior. I’m far from a prude – the opposite actually – but how many shows can MTV put on that glorifies the WORST in teen behavior?
From Jersey Shore to TEEN MOMS (the downfall of society) to My Sweet 16 to now Skins – how are teens supposed to TRY to do the right thing, or TRY to do well in school, or TRY to resist peer pressure when every single show that is targeted at them is about anything but? They are all about getting laid, getting high, and how stupid and disconnected their parents are…well DUH.
When I was a teen (and I’m only 30 now), if a 16 year old chick got pregnant – guess what – she was a stupid WHORE who was driven to the clinic. She wasn’t a fucking reality star. Maybe – just MAYBE – if networks like MTV and even ABC Family to a degree would stop making all the really bad behavior seem like such a good idea, teen girls might stop whoring themselves out on webcams and teen boys would stop killing themselves over being gay. It’s not THE reason these things happen certainly, but it can’t help.
Good luck Skins, I hope you inspire plenty of 14 year olds girls to rush out and get their first STD. Hey, that sounds like an idea for a spinoff…instead of Skins…Lesions!
Well said. Completely agree with you.
Memo to TVW: it’s called entertainment. Perhaps you’ve heard of it. When police procedurals depict grotesque killings, do you assume the viewers will be motivated to dismember their families? IT’S NOT REAL. And if you know anything about the so-called “reality” series you name check in your post, you know they are as “unreal” as any scripted drama.
To paraphrase the esteemed Mr. Barkley, MTV is not attempting to be anyone’s role model (although if you look under the hood, they are quite active in the do-gooder arena – see the THIN LINE campaign for details). And if you think any on screen aspect of TEEN MOM or 16 AND PREGNANT makes it appear glamorous to have a child while you’re in high school, you’ve never seen the show in its entirety. Don’t judge based on promo spots alone.
Memo to TVW: it’s called entertainment.
Memo to Paw: not really.
Every season, MTV throws up a whole slew of “positive” shows. They really do try. But every season, the problem remains: NO ONE watches these shoes. World of Jinks, Get Hired, The Buried Life…. all failed to make a blip on the radar.
Teens & college kids love drama. For better or (most likely) worse, that’s what the majority of TV viewers expect from MTV. In fact, the majority of young women I know who are fans of 16&Pregnant and Teen Mom because watching that depressing sludge makes the feel better about their own lives.
Nice to read a response here that contains some common sense. This show apparently capitalizes on the “cool” “hip” shock value that makes money in our current market. What would be even more shocking is a successful reality series targeting the same demo that was based on keeping your $hit together, and doing the right thing just as “TVwhore” hinted at.
@ TVwhore
Thank you x10.
Either this younger generation is in for a horrible shock when they hit their 20s/30s and realize their lives SUCK and defy logic (you live in the US, not Calcutta–get a frigging clue)…or the world is about to end badly.
THANK YOU for saying it so well! The mentality of shows that such a large part of our population watches and actually ENJOYS are so crude and NOT funny. I saw ten minutes of Jersey Shore once and that was 10 minutes too many. To see these sad human beings making millions for binge drinking, swearing every other word, having strings of one-night-stands and lying, is pathetic and depressing. They are completely self-absorbed – but why should i be surprised? The world is ‘all about me’, right?
I’m all for escapism, and I’m not saying networks are required to tow the moral line, but encouraging people to be intellect-less bottom feeders (so they can get rich and breed more intellect-less bottom feeders) is wrong, in my opinion. And like it or not, people spend so much time in front of the tube these days, these shows actually have HUGELY DANGEROUS influences on young kids coming of age. Parents don’t parent because they don’t want to grow up, and execs don’t draw any kind of line between absolute trash and quality programming because it comes down to the almighty RATINGS and DOLLARS. Our society is getting dumber and dumber, so let’s just keep lowering expectations, why don’t we? Not to mention, what on earth happened to the MTV I knew and loved? Where’s the MUSIC?! You should really change your name – it’s become meaningless.
Thanks, but no thanks, mainstream DUMBerica. I’ll stick with PBS, History Channel, Discovery Channel, and the reality shows in which people actually DO something PRODUCTIVE with their lives – like cook, build cars, etc. and set healthy examples for the children and teens (and adults!!!) in this world.
My sentiments exactly!
well said completely agree. I’m 24 and these shows are degrading and embarrassing and i would still think if you got pregnant at 16 you would be a dumb whore! what is wrong with society? Why do we glorify the all night partying and the disrespect? Good God grow up. and i don’t blame MTV i blame the idiots that watch this crap.
You know what, Listen here. I’m 16 and Before the jersey shore and fucking teen mom or Skins even… Ive tried drugs, ive gotten drunk, I dont complain that my parents dont care. And I havent gotten pregnant yet but what makes you think that becasue we are only 16 watching these shows are going to “influence” us to want a baby or to want to smoke or drink? if that is the case then I BLAME THE PARENTS. you know why? because YOU have fucking control over what your kid watches YOU should have control wether your kid goes out late or not. WORRY ABOUT YOURSELF not strangers who you dont know and start warning them… because thats stupid, whos really going to listen to you?
This is why EW is irrelevant – Tom Hardy would run circles around this kid.
I refuse to watch this show after their incessant ad campaigns which depict the scenester/hipster bullshit that most people run away from.
I will be watchin jersey shore tonitee..but will change the channel when skins debuts to show MTV how stupidd this show looks..
You’ll watch Jersey Shore but not Skins? Well that just about says it all…
and they cast a half-phillipino and half-white girl to play a korean girl! wonderful job, mtv. applause.
I saw a lot of the Brit version when I lived there. I wouldn’t call it a smash. There was always the ook factor.
The series was cast by New York based casting director Susan Shopmaker who has a true talent for discovering young, untested talent who have big potential. She casted the Cannes indie, Afterschool, in 2008, which featured the cinematic debuts of current Showtime stars – Jeremy Allan White (Shameless), Addison Timlin (Californication) and Ezra Miller (Californication). Needless to say, she has one of the best eyes at spotting young actors. Skins will hopefully reveal to the industry, outside of just the indie realm, that she is one of the top casting directors working on either coast.
Wow – she’s got an eye for casting people no one has ever heard of in second rate pay cable shows and indies that no one has seen. Awesome!
worse scenerio is this remake of the original falls flat. though it deserves a chance for it could wind up being one of the few american remakes of a british show that works. and as the article stated James had till he got the role no desire for acting. should be interesting to see how James and the cast do with skin’s if it lives up to the original source .
I understand that Skins is filmed in Canada and has a predominantly Canadian cast.
It is so refreshing to see the attractive child of a wealthy white Hollywood family finally break into the business.
You say Brian Elsey cast the show. Would you also say Brian edited, filmed, dressed, did hair and make-up and everything else for the show? Why would Brian be said to cast the show and not the casting director? Double-standard much?
Confused, it is said that the creator/exec. producer of the show CAST the lead because that IS who does the casting! A casting director is the MIDDLE MAN. He/she simply presents talent TO the creator/exec. producers/network to choose from. The casting director DOESN’T cast ANY leads. Simply presents SUGGESTIONS/OPTIONS. Comprende?
MTV took the gay guy out of Skins. For that reason, I won’t be watching. It seems concerning that, out of all the characters in the original British version, MTV saw fit to remove the gay guy.
OMG! they took out Maxxie! He was the best!!! I loved him!! I also hate how they changed Sid’s name to Stanley. UK series rocks!
True but they did add a lesbian cheerleader. Not saying that makes it okay to cut out Maxxie, just noting they didn’t remove all homosexuality from the show.
They switched out Maxxie’s character with a lesbian character. Apparently MTV figured it would be an easier sell with a lesbian than a male gay character. Sad and spineless if you ask me…
chill out. stop trying to over advocate for gay people, and for your information they replace him with a lesbian. please, next time actually read up on the subject you are arguing about.
IT WILL NEVER BE AS GOOD AS THE UK VERSION!!!!!!! the original skins was AMAZING, and doing a remake is bad, why not just put up the original, I’m sure they could buy it from E4. That would be way better than watching some butchered american version!
I have yet to watch the first episode but it does look daring. Being that i am finishing my last year in highschool, i know alot of what goes on in this show is what really happens. This show is a bit different being that it relates to most High schools now and days. I am looking forward to tonights first episode.
“It’s not giving too much away to say that this will be a much more vulnerable and easily-damaged Tony in the USA show,” he said.
Uggh. Based on this comment from the US creator/destroyer and from the commenters above, MTV perhaps didn’t quite understand what they have. In the original, Tony is a sociopath, teen click ring-leader who manipulates his friends, and has to re-configure himself after an injury, providing him with an interesting character arc over the series. With this description the US Tony sounds emo and woe-is-me downtrodden. Surprised they didn’t try to cast Michael Cera.
However I am going to try to watch it tonight with an open mind and LOTS of hope. Sigh.
dont hate it till you’ve seen it
We’re just going to ignore the ethical dilemma surrounding the show and just get to my opinion of its quality.
Skins just aired in the US. It fell flat.
I know you’re not supposed to compare, but loving the UK version I couldn’t help it. Some parts are pulled straight from the original script word for word, other parts are needlessly chopped. There’s bleeping, strategically placed objects to cover nudity, and if I’m not mistaken a little bit of pixelation. Also Cassie’s character got warped – she’s completely different and I don’t like it – Tea replaced Maxxie and names are all weird…
I don’t know how it’s supposed to continue, but, so far, it’s whatever.
And I fail to see how this kid is better than Tom Hardy. Or Alex Pettyfer, although I admit I only like him because he’s pretty…
I hope the twisted souls that wrote this show understand that they sensationalizing sex, violence, and depression, in a very ugly way. Young adults are constantly being hijacked by thoughts of perversion of cynical older influence of writers. They have lost all romantic and innocent notions of what really is beautiful in this world.. Sex, and violence, does not make the world go around… I hope the shock writers are known for just that… Remember you and Howard Stern are so alike, cheap and unforgettable. You might glitzen like cheap bling, but you loose shine real soon.. Thanks for being fake, in the purpose to cash in your lovely checks. What about the true individuality of the each character, and the talents and ambitions of being a teenager and growing into their uniqueness.. Maybe to difficult for some over the hill balding perverts, who think only of sex realm.. All these characters are shallow, and superficial, like a puddle of shallow sexual thoughts all tieing them to the same mentality.. You should have just casted you selves, old middle age perverts. Why do think people of all ages watch youtube, then tv.. Because it real, not made up fake stuff, that look like fluff, and feels like what ever.
Enough said, because if they actually read this I do not believe their short attention span can handle reading this much with out thoughts of sex popping in their gross, polluted cheap minds.
“Enough said, because if they actually read this I do not believe their short attention span can handle reading this much with out thoughts of sex popping in their gross, polluted cheap minds”
Oh thee irony
I really don’t think just because 16 year olds watch a tv show they’ll suddenly have some mind blowing revelation that sex and drugs are out there. If they haven’t already done it then they’re probably thinking about it.
Also, this show so far has no violence besides a kid fighting a hobo in his bathtub. You’re making generalized and sensationalistic statements. You were either a very boring teen or never a teen at all.
skins us is only copying the first episode and branching off from there. And they have included American attributes to the show, replacing the British roots. But, I do love the Brit version and the only dish I can give on America is that our originality has gone down the drain. I wish they could just broadcast skins uk over here, but that’s not gunna happen. Skins is skins.
“The cast is COMPOSED of teens” not “comprised of.” “Comprised of” is never correct.
“Teens COMPRISE the cast” is also correct.
This Skins show sucked, Shameless sucked, and that Episodes thing with Matt Leblanc sucked. Oh well, don’t have to worry about the DVR maxing out any time soon……..
