QED has packaged an adaptation of I, Alex Cross, the James Patterson novel that is essentially a reboot of the James Patterson mystery series that starred Morgan Freeman as the detective/psychologist based in D.C. Tyler Perry will headline this version, and Rob Cohen will direct. Distributors are circling the project right now. In fact, Paramount, which distributed the Cross mysteries Kiss the Girls and Along Came A Spider, is interested in taking the project off the table. It will be interesting to see if Lionsgate steps up after Perry has consistently turned in winners for the minimajor, which collects a distribution fee on pictures that Perry owns. The Alex Cross reboot was originally conceived as a vehicle for actor Idris Elba, who was going to play the character in the novel Cross, with David Twohy directing. Perry became the lead in recent weeks. It’s likely to be a controversial choice, and the key will be whether Perry can bring the considerable following that follow his directing vehicles. His biggest successes came when Perry played the female alter ego, the stereotypical matriarch Madea.
He last directed For Colored Girls, an adaptation of the iconic 1975 play by Ntozake Shange. His movies usually have a strong female following, and the Cross mysteries are action mystery which appeals to a male viewing audience. It is a radical departure for Perry, who usually stars in the films he writes and directs (Star Trek was an exception). Lionsgate recently acquired Take My Wife, a comedy that will star Perry and Dwayne Johnson. Cohen is an interesting choice as director, and has a franchise track record: he launched both the XxX and The Fast and the Furious franchises. I’m told that the plan is for Perry to star in a trilogy. QED partners Bill Block and Paul Hanson will produce. WME reps both Perry and Cohen.

Barf!
What happened to the Idris Elba deal?
Same thing I said.
This is truly sickening. There are plenty of black actors out there, known or unknown, that can do this justice. Clearly, they aren’t trying to make any kind of return on this investment. Just because he’s a black actor doesn’t mean he can play every role that requires a black leading man, because, let’s face it, he’s not leading man material.
Give other folks a chance!
If you actually went to African American movies you might understand that one of the most successful leading men is taking himself to the next level with this choice.
The next level of crap.
No, no, no! Tyler Perry is NOT a romantic leading man!
Ildris Elba is an incredible ACTOR! Tyler Perry is not.
Sorry, but this is just deal making.
I’m not a fan of ICM, but looks like Idris should have never left. He’s been with UTA for a bit and they already @#%$ the bed on this one, BIG TIME!
I agree with you , not Tyler Perry in the role of Alex Cross. I have read every Patterson book., they are all great. I read them with Morgan freeman as Cross for years. If it is time for a new Alex Cross, here are my choices, see if you agree with me. Gary
Dourdan from CSI Los Vegas or Henry Simmons from the show Shark.
If you actually went to African American movies you might understand….
I’ve enjoyed black films by black directors from every era, going back to Oscar Micheaux’s 1925 silent classic Body and Soul, starring Paul Robeson, not that that has anything to do with the issue at hand. It is an insult to moviegoers of any race to suggest that Tyler Perry is an actor on par with Idris Elba. Moreover, if PERRY is what now qualifies as a MASCULINE black leading man, then the emasculation of the black male is now complete.
Tell It!
You said it all so I don’t have to.
To second what someone else said, “BARF!!!”
I never thought that Perry would play a role like this and I don’t think he is qualified for it either. Coming from a black person, I can not take him seriously after Madea roles. I think he is better in those roles or one of his roles in Why Did I Get Married. I will watch it hoping it will prove me wrong but I don’t have any confidence that it will.
I guess they wanted a real movie star who opens consistently between 20M and 30M each time out.
…and then stops at 50M, maybe 60M if the timing is right.
Which means the budget on this film would have to be 30M tops for anyone to see any money.
Perry’s last film topped out at 37M. Uh-oh. And that beast was dropping with star power.
Perry makes his gazillions from TV anyway. Turn it into a series.
Look, I have watched his movies (on cable reluctanly) and I know his real fans who pay money to see that crap and there is NO WAY they are the same audience that enjoys a thriller. They are not that diverse. I am a black woman and just because they stick Tyler Perry feminine azz under my nose doesnt mean I am going to like the smell of it. Tyler Perry can not act and is most comfortable in drag. A closet case with delusions of grandure.
Idris is a great masculine, sexy GREAT actor. Mistake.
All I care about is TAKE MY WIFE!!! Now that movie is going to be awesome and make box office GOLD!
Dude. Have you ever seen a Tyler Perry movie?
Yeah. I thought this project had a chance of turning out cool with the Elba-Towhy combo. But Perry-Cohen? Really?
I wish I hadn’t known about that possibility. Now I going to forever think about how awesome Stringer Bell would have been in this role.
Liked the sound of it when it was Elba-Twohy, could’ve been cool. This new incarnation of Perry-Cohen? Could be really, really bad.
This is a horrible, horrible casting choice.
You are so right..sorry to be so late in voicing my opinion that this is horrible miscasting, I have been a little speechless since I was told that Tyler was starring as Alex Cross, no way is he Alex. I was thinking about the coolness of Samuel L as the lead, and we must remember that Sampson is a BIG dude, so who do you suggest for Sampson?
I bet Tyler Perry has not even read one Alex Cross novel. The worst casting ever.
*Sigh* I thought I’d be watching this movie, I guess not. No Idris, no me.
Elba started criticize Perry and PERRY took the lead role away from him because he’s producing
I just googled Idris Elba. OH MY YES!!!!! He is DEFINITELY Alex Cross!!!!!!
Perry and Elba both can have roles in the movie, Remember Alex Cross has a best friend in the novels.
Wow! I can hardly believe Tyler Perry would be cast as Alex Cross, the casting people sound as if they have not read one Alex Cross novel. You would think fans of James Patterson/Alex Cross would be given a chance to voice who should take over the role of Alex Cross if not Morgan Freeman ! Sorry Tyler I see Idris Elba, Laurence Fishburn,Harry Lennix, Denzel Washington, Danny Glover(Sampson), Dennis Haysbert, Delroy Lindo, James Pickens, Avery Brooks, Michael Dorn, Carl Weathers, Gary Dourdan(Sampson).
I do hope Summit Entertainment takes a second look at who will portray Alex Cross if Morgan Freeman is not available!
ohhhh- this is terrible.
I wonder if he is going to also play the bad guy and the female lead?
I have to laugh, your comment is the most lighthearted one. I am thinking this was a business decision more so than who would better portray the role. Mr. Perry has had successful movies, maybe he worked a deal with producing (the money that is..) but I willing to give him a fair opportunity anything with more minorities in film is better than no film. I really disappointed in the Oscars, Screen Actor’s Guild, and Critics around the county. We could not find one minority worthy of a nomination. Before we go totally mean, let’s see then let’s tear into him if it’s a bad performance.
Too funny!
Wow! That’s funny!!!
I don’t know. Alex Cross dressed as an old woman? I guess all is forgiven if it’s in 3D.
Perfect casting and director.
That was sarcastic, right?
…….(sigh)……..
THAT is an inspired choice.
He is perfect — he is younger and his company knows how to Produce and get projects done
James Patterson must be thrilled to have him so much better than the old old guard
Go Tyler – you will slam it
Certainly will…straight into the shi**er.
James Patterson has obviously become senile. That explains why he has so many ‘co-authors’ these days. What a hilarious choice. This guy is so unbelievable as a serious actor, and as a leading man. What, was Chris Tucker busy?
Are you friggin’ kidding me! CHRIS TUCKER! REALLY! Who the heck is senile now? Have you read these books from the begining, if you had, you’d know that Chris does not fit the role at all! And I, “truly love me some Chris Tucker”, but you are bananas….for real! Go back and look up the description of Alex and repost! You are trippin’, if you would choose Chris, you might as well have said “why not Jackie Chan?
While I’m glad they’re getting rid of the granddaughter-screwing sleazebag Morgan Freeman, the casting of drag queen Tyler Perry as a seasoned cop (even one at the beginning of his career if they’re going in that direction) is absolutely ridiculous. Tyler Perry simply doesn’t come off as remotely masculine. Plus the only Alex Cross movie that was a hit was Kiss the Girls. The more Cross-centric Along Came A Spider was a flop so is there really a demand for this as a film series? Would work better as a cable TV series.
Now THIS is a good idea!
Get your facts straight re: SPIDER. It did near 75 domestic, slightly more than Kiss The Girls.
But re: TP bearing, you’re right. The dude needs to shed some weight and take on some attitude.
They were not blood related; thank you very much
No, but he helped raise her in his home for many years, so it’s still a pretty skeevy thing to do. I love Morgan as an actor, but the step-granddaughter thing is “Woody Allen” SKEEVY.
Permission to hurl?
What happened to Idris Elba? I thought he was in talks? He would have been perfect!
How do you go from Idris Elba to Tyler Perry?
??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
How? you Sc**ew the right people….sorry, but this casting is all wrong….Even in Star Trek, he wasn’t taken seriously with the 2 minutes of time.
Eheheh. One of my instant favorite movie moments was how the audience at my theater reacted to Perry showing up in STAR TREK.
Tyler Perry? With Idris you’re getting an actor that can command every frame. Horrible casting choice! First the Killer in 3D nonsense and now this.
they should have kept idris elba.
They should’ve kept Twohy too. Maybe he jumped when Perry came on?
If Twohy did, that increases my already-high respect for him tenfold…:)
This is the first sign of the apocalypse. How the FUCK do you go from Idris fucking Elba to Tyler motherfuckingantichrist Perry? Are we being punked? Where’s Ashton?
Ashton?
You have me laughing so hard I’m spitting out my hot chocolate. Yes, from Elba to Perry is truly an unfathomable casting segway.
I can’t stop laughing, James Patterson are you there? They are screwing your book up! Pleassse talk to them!
You must be a comedy writer! That was too damn funny!
Smart move on Perry’s part. Gateway to the mainstream.
OH GOD NO!
Sure it’s foolish, but if he fails now maybe we don’t see him for a while after the failure.
Here’s to hoping someone screwed up and Tyler Perry is actually being cast as John Sampson and Idris Elba is still Alex Cross… THAT would be a good fit… but i’m concerned about A) Tyler Perry playing Alex Cross, but he could be good and B) Cohen directing… Cohen directing is unforgiveable
I didn’t even think of Perry as John Sampson. That’s not a bad fit at all. Perry needs to ease himself into this new level of roles. I’m black and the thought of him playing Alex Cross makes me worry for him. Idris Elba was the man for the part. That just feels right.
Is Jeff Zucker back?! This has to be Zucker. Or Kutcher.
WOW. I honestly thought this was a joke when I first saw the headline, since I assumed the Elba thing was a done deal.
If anything, Perry would probably be a better fit for Cross’ sidekick, John Sampson.
Not as Sampson, more like Nana Mama.
How about Delroy Lindo or Ernie Hudson as Alex Cross? Please, not Tyler Perry!
hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
I’m not even sure what else to say about this. What a JOKE.
Bwaahahaahahaha…..hilarious. Tyler Perry? Bwahahahahahahaha…You’re killing me here. And I’m about to pee. Bwahahahahahahaha…Tyler Perry? I….CAN’T….BREATHE…..!!
Hey, Cohen swapped Ice Cube for Vin Diesel and look how well that turned out! This is laughable. If not Elba, how about Omari Hardwick? All that guy needs is the right film.
I love you, because you recognize true talent. Please, tell me this was the African American actor opposite Nick Cage in one of the most entertaining movies of 2010, “Kick-Ass” he was the parnter who at the end took his daughter to school. You want a sequel that’s the sequel “Kick-Ass II”!
Omaru who? are you crazy? he’s not on any list of up and coming black actors… anthony mackie, idris elba and michael ealy are the only guys to be considered. tyler is, well, tyler is not good… unless it involves cross-dressing and staying in the closet…
Would have preferred Idris Elba. Clearly marketing is running creative now….
Not one logical thought went into this casting decision…I guess to some people we all do look alike. Smh
I think everyone knocking the choice of Tyler Perry should wait and see how he handles the material rather than leaping to emotive judgements based on his comedies.
Did you see his 2 minutes in Star Trek? And he wasn’t all that compelling in his own Married movies.
EXACTLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
