UPDATE, MONDAY: The fast-food restaurant chain, which on Saturday became PTC’s new main target, has pulled its ads from MTV’s Skins.
UPDATE, SATURDAY: Today, the Parents Television Council praised another advertiser, Wrigley, for suspending advertisements on MTV’s Skins. Another company, H&R Block, also has asked that its MTV ads don’t run on Skins. PTC is still going after other advertisers for endorsing a program with such “extreme” content. Just this morning, PTC activists began contacting Subway directly.
FRIDAY 3:15 PM: General Motors has joined Taco Bell in pulling advertising from MTV’s racy drama series Skins, according to the Parents Television Council, which has been leading the crusade against the show that features suggestive or explicit content with underage actors.
Ads for GM’s Chevy Volt aired during the premiere of Skins on Monday. But GM has told PTC that Skins was on its ‘do not buy’ list on MTV, that the commercials had aired in error and that the company has no intention of advertising on the show. “Every single advertiser who sponsored the premiere episode of Skins is not only endorsing, but glorifying teen drug and alcohol abuse, not to mention a plethora of baseless sexual content,” PTC said in a statement. It also listed the sponsors for Skins, urging them to withdraw their support for the show: Schick Hydro, H&R Block, L’Oreal, Subway, Foot Locker, Orbit chewing gum and Extra chewing gum. The TV watchdog yesterday called on the U.S. Senate and House Judiciary Committees and the Department of Justice to open an investigation for possible child pornography and exploitation on the show, because of the ages of its cast, 15-19. Here’s a promo for episode 2:
TV Editor Nellie Andreeva - tip her here.

They did it without getting beaten down by a special interest group?
Too bad a Kennedy wasn’t against it.
Then it would never have gotten on the air.
LOL great comment and so true!! LOL
Why doesn’t Hot Topic just buy the hour… Brought to you with limited commercial interruptions.
MY PROBLEM WITH THIS SHOW IS NOT THE GRATUITOUS SEX AND DRUGS. IT’S THE FACT THE SHOW JUST SUCKS!
The ad didn’t show much skin at all. Could it be HOMOPHOBIA is the real problem some people have with the show?
PTC must have shares in MTV because everytime they indict a show (no matter how egregious) the viewership skyrocket with the protesters and the NAMBLA member getting ammunition
So this Parents Council didn’t notice when the raunchier original aired on BBC America?
They were one of the 115 people who watch BBC America.
and your point is?
BBC America? I guess none of the seven people watching it are members of the PTC.
Eh. Peak viewership for BBC America is, I believe, 1.2 million for the Doctor Who season premiere last year. Which is better than pretty much any news program not on Fox News gets and better than Colbert Report, for comparison.
So, eh. The already tired “nobody watches that network anyway” joke is more tired than usual here – it does a fair bit better than most cable networks on its general tier (i.e. not on basic cable, nor, often, the lowest digital tier.)
According the Nielson, FoxNews viewership is 14 to 15 million. Tops among cable news, and on the heels of ABCNBCCBS which are in 3 times as many households. So, just like an good demoncrap, you just made up your numbers and expected us to believe. And Obamacare is going to reduce the deficit. And global warming is a fact. Maybe you’re starting to notice that Americans no longer believe the crap you so-called progressive spew. We fact check.
It’s only 14-15 million when you add up the average amount of daily viewers for the whole week(Fox News averages close to 2 or 3 million a day, usually behind USA Network and sometimes ESPN and Disney Channel).
So much for fact-checking.
Besides that, you must have misread the post, as the person you were replying to said “any news program not on Fox News”.
Nikki should consider adding an edit post feature.
I was unaware that watching British television and acknowledging that Fox is the highest rated cable news channel marked me as a progressive. Fascinating.
In any case, you’re taking daily viewer numbers over the whole day’s programming and comparing them to my single show numbers. Hit tvbythenumbers.com and you can check the actual views for a given day – you’ll see that 1.2 million puts a show ahead of pretty much anything on Late Night or non-Fox news. It’s a solidly good number for cable. Now, admittedly, that’s the best BBC America has ever done, whereas something like CNN can hit numbers close to that with some reliability, but it’s still a number that is nothing to sneeze at. Which is all I was saying – that the “nobody watches that channel” joke was lame.
Actually, there are probably few cable channels more interesting to look at, ratings-wise, than BBC America, because it has such an odd relationship with American programming. Starting with when it directly counter-programmed NBC’s adaptation of Coupling by advertising that they had the better, original version. Which was interesting, because the BBC was ultimately counter-programming against material it had a stake in. And it has Doctor Who, which is interesting because it is the show with the single biggest piracy problem in the US. So those are always interesting numbers to watch.
How about the fact that the show is simply Awful. I’m think we should all just be happy the MTV has given the kids of America another stellar example of how they should live their lives. Getting Pregnant in High School means you get to be on the TV!! Awesome job MTV.
Well, your first mistake is suggesting that it’s the responsibility of television to set an example. It’s not. The purpose of TV is educate and entertain. Mostly entertain. Kids aren’t raised by TV, they’re raised by parents. And if they end getting raised by the TV, they were raised by bad parents.
It may not be TV’s responsibility to set the example, but it damn sure is not its responsibility to screw things up either. If you’ve ever raised a teenager then you’ll know.
Interestingly enough, I managed to watch teen sex and drugs on television and in movies all throughout the 80s when I was a teen and I still didn’t get pregnant.
Funny, that.
If you wish to pretend that all media including Walt Disney’s Bambi isn’t propaganda you’re a fool. They are all selling ideas. The question is which are you buying? When you subscribe to cable you buy all the content regardless of whether you watch it.
Wrong – Not sure where you learned that, but the reality is that people’s beliefs and actions are affected by the events they obvserve and experience (via sight, hearing, interactions, etc) through their environment. That includes TELEVISION.
This has been a well documented fact in psychology and sociology for well over the past 50 years. Where’ve you been?
Sources, please.
wake up america, this is what kids really do when mom and dad aren’t around! bunch of idiots! stop being so sexually repressed, sex is a good thing. a reminder to everyone that we all came from the vagina – everyone had to have sex for you to even be able to type this!! get over your repressed selves and start accepting that sex is a GOOD THING! jeesh!!
So sex is “a good thing” for everyone, even young teens who probably can’t handle its emotional repercussions, LET ALONE support a child if they’re ignorant of birth control?
The original British series was NOT so one-sided and celebratory of excess. It showed the cause of attraction to sex and drugs, and often times, its fallout. It was a more balanced representation of what actually happens. The American version, once again, takes only the most immediately obvious element and ignores all of the…you know, subtlety and smart writing.
Uh, Americans are all about excess. Have you not noticed this?
Um, only one episode has aired.
Subtly smart writing that was Written. By. Teens. as well. It’s an interesting and usually ignored fact that the BBC show was predominantly written by teenagers.
wow how profound of you. really gave that some thought. good job.
Throw all the insults you want, but there are those who don’t agree with you and that doesn’t make us idiots. Sex is great for *adults* but just because teenagers are doing it and having it pushed on them doesn’t mean it’s okay. They are not mature enough to handle all that goes with it, from the risk of disease and pregnancy to the emotional toll it takes when their relationships don’t work out. I don’t even like the PTC and if they were up in arms over an adult show, I’d tell them to mind their own business. But America’s kids deserve better.
And this isn’t to say British kids don’t deserve better, because they do too, although as already posted, it sounds like the one in the UK was a little more complex.
Hey — Yeah, I was in UK when it originally aired. Contrary to some media commentary Stateside, there *were*, in fact, murmurs of disapproval and shock in Britain too. But overall the UK content had an emotional framework that was both honest about teenage kicks but also about the consequences. Not sure I’m seeing the same in the US version, but it’s early days. Further, we surely need some time to engage with the characters first, before we start feeling the emotional stakes with them…? I remember being emotionally sucker-punched by one particular episode in the Brit version, but this was some way into the season and I had truly gotten to rooting for the characters involved.
And you are what? 16 years old. Wait untill you have your own kids and see hoe fast you change your tune.
“kids and see hoe fast ”
I see what you did there.
Yeah, I see what they did too. The “w” and “e” keys are right next to each other. But I guess a typo makes any argument null and void no matter how right or wrong it may be.
sex is a good thing for adults. this is called soft child porn — so why don’t you sit there and watch it naked with you cat in your one bedroom, crappy apartment, living your pathetic life while you pretend you’ve actually accomplished something, anything, while on planet earth.
loser. Anyone who defends this crap is an idiot and sick.
go to hell
re:idiots (how fitting), Sex isn’t a toy. You have been bamboozled into thinking there are no consequences for your actions. Don’t worry, you will be forced to learn soon enough. Your “progressive” ides of promiscuity are as old as Sodom and Gomorrah. Don’t fool yourself into thinking you’re on the bleeding edge of human philosophical evolution. Go do your homework.
so sex is such a good thing that it’s okay to pimp your children out to a TV producer who will use them to make dirty movies?
Maybe child sex trafficking is legal in the UK, but it isn’t here.
The parents of these children should all be prosecuted for Child Endangerment, the producers of the show should be charged with Contributing to the Delinquency of Minors, and the parents of any child who watches this show should be charged on both counts!
Have you watched this show? I finally did last night – it’s not great but ok rip off scenes of Ferris Bueller, Risky Business, Edward Scissorshand to name a few.
I don’t understand the uproar. Was there a similar uproar over Gossip Girl (which had high school kids getting served in bars, having sex etc))? I have not seen Jersey Shore but the clips I saw are much worse than Skins, and of course Real World has for years shown young adults having sex.
Hey A$$Hole….We should NOT be telling 15 yr. old kids to go out and screw around, use drugs, drink etc. I hope you didn’t bring any kids into this world – because I can just imagine what kind of tramps they are!!! My wife and I successfully raised 3 kids with great morals and standards – and also University degrees!! We took our parenting responsibilities very seriously – and they thanked us for that later in life!!
Exactly, “Parenting”, a novel concept in raising your children is unknown to some.
YOU WAKE UP! These are g’damn children and this behavior dangerous it is entirely irresponsible! People like you are exactly why American science and industry have fallen into 3rd world status. You go into fits against those who advocate restraint and discipline because you think you’re an animal. Go ahead, continue to be an animal. Go have sex with beasts and the same flesh all you want! As a parent, I will fight you to the death because I know the destruction that lifestyle brings to relationships and/or disease. You people have little difference with drug dealers. You defend irresponsible destructive behaviors because it feels good and don’t care about your future. Good for you! That’s your right. But don’t think I will stand by idle and swallow the worthless garbage you utter.
Thank You ty ty,,Well said!
If you are such a good parent why are you so worried about what everyone else is doing? Why don’t you just take responsibility for your children and leave everyone else alone? It isn’t as if having a child is particularly hard. I know you think your children are special, unique flowers. They are about as special and unique as as the billions of other babies out there.
Everything this show depicts already exists. It reflects reality; it does not create it.
And how could a show imported from the BBC cause a decline in American math and science scores?
I completely agree and I’m glad someone else finally sees my way. btw, I hope you watch my new show coming out next fall. It’s a show where I put small tv cameras inside toilets showing people taking a dump. I mean, everybody takes a dump right? So why shouldn’t we show it on tv?? And I don’t leave ANYTHING out either. It’s up close and personal and it’s going to be great. Can’t wait to get your reviews on my new show.
If you want to put a show with that content on, it’s your money and business acumen. I, personally, am going to exercise my right to not tune in.
I’m not going to stage a public freak out and call all your advertisers because ZOMG!!1!!1eleventy!!111 U R Runing Amurikkka!!! I’m going to simply and quietly not watch.
See how I did that?
The rage to believe that one can find the secret to liberty in permissiveness from the cradle on is truly an American trait.
Yeah, it is so wonderful to have even one out of wedlock baby that can’t be taken care of properly by a child mother who will really understand how screwed she is economically, post opening her legs. Rock on idiots!
If you think the problem is that people are being sexually repressive, then you have your head up your proverbal butt. Encouraging young children to have sex is like encouraging a man who is paralyzed tojump in the water. Children cannot handle the emotional after effects of raising babies which can be one of the side of effects of having sex in case you never noticed.
Like I said before, MTV should have known this show wouldn’t survive in America. PTC still on a mission to make sure we’re all watching The Andy Griffith Show and Leave it to Beaver on every channel.
No, everyone doesn’t have to watch Andy Griffith or The Beave, but this show is glorifying excessive irresponsible sex for the sake of shock and awe, money and lust. In this clip alone it shows a girl daydreaming of a guy in front of her, she then catches a chick checking her out either b/c they had already been together or b/c she is checking her out she decides “why not”. What you kids don’t realize is your parents all went thru school and all had to deal with drugs/sex too. it’s nothing new when people say “it’s what kids today have to deal with”… yes, and we did back 20 years ago too but tv was more responsible and wasn’t glorifying it as much just to be edgy. War is happening today but I doubt MTV or the progressive/hip kids today would be as happy if a show glorifying Americans killing Taliban without any thought or repercussions were on the air. We all like a good sex show, remember we had Basic Instinct in our day but we didn’t objectify kids and we didn’t stoop to baseless excess without artistic merit.
Eh. The British original is not purely about shock and awe – it’s a character drama. I’ve not bothered with the remake, because I don’t usually go for US remakes of UK shows, but its at least got good pedigree.
“yes, and we did back 20 years ago too but tv was more responsible and wasn’t glorifying it as much just to be edgy”
What a load of hogwash.
I was a teenager 20 years ago too and I suspect you either lived in Pleasantville or you weren’t allowed to watch television at all if this is your recollection.
Porky’s, anyone?!?!
Um. Idiot? We all get it. And yes we all know where babies come from. They come from Fred Segal Santa Monica right? This isn’t about being uptight or conservative it’s about being genuine and actually being a bit responsible and by responsible all I mean is that if your going to put this crap on the air – make it good crap. Tune into VH1 or Bravo for examples.
exactly.
thank god for rational people like you.
The show is atrociously unwatchable.
Does anyone have a full list of advertisers? I’m sure if such a list were posted and these companies accused of glorifying pedophelia, MTV would cancel the show immediately…
SPONSORS (As far as I can tell from internet research)
In addition to GM and Taco Bell (which have already wisely put a halt to supporting the show) and those advertisers mentioned above, Episode One of “Skins” was brought to you courtesy of the following advertisers (may have varried by market):
SUBWAY / First Response Pregnancy Test / Plan B morning after pill / RED BULL /
RIVAL NETWORKS who ran promos for their own series:
FOX (American Idol)/ USA Network (Royal Pains) TBS (a new Conan spot), SYFY (Being Human).
MOVIES: Dream Works’ I Am Number Four /The Rite / The Roommate/ No Strings Attached / Sanctum / Just Go With It / The Mechanic.
VIDEO GAME: Ultraviolet Dead Space
If MTV is to be investigated for possible production of child pornography or child exploitation, could these advertisers be opening themselves to liability for facilitating it and profiting from it? Is it worth it to them to continue taking that risk?
Let’s ask them, shall we?
Actually you have a great point. These advertisers could be held culpable if this whole issue turned into a huge court case.
I saw a lawyer on another network who has been a judge say so – she was a judge in California, she seemed to be very specific about it.
I can’t imagine ANY adverstiser wants it’s name associated with the term “kiddy porn.”
A wise advertiser should be running away from this program- and fast.
All the postings are a joke and clearly from the PTC. I feel for all your bored wides or husbands. Do you people even have GEDs? Because clearly none of you went to law school…it is a joke to think they would hold the advertisers liable. Who says they heard a judge once say…site a case idiot or go home!
Hello moron. The previous poster is referring to former Westchester County, NY District Attorney Jeanine Pirro who appeared on Greta Van Sustern’s show Friday night. She pointed out that courts have ruled that those who advertise in conjunction with child pornography can be held just as liable as the producers or directors of the child pornography. Obviously, an advertiser is attempting to profit through their association with a television show; therefore, they pay money to that show. If that show is then deemed to be child pornography, the advertiser is attempting to profit through sponsorship of an illegal activity. Do they not teach you to use your brain at your law school, “law school?”
“Site” a case, eh?
GM? Government Motors. Did anyone consult the stockholders before this decision? … Oh that’s right we own GM but have no say. Go back to sleep OmeriKa. Nothing to see here.
Wow, I typically steer clear of MTV shows, if PTC has their collective panties in such a knot maybe I ought to watch this one. MTV should thank PTC for the free publicity.
I have worked in a major city hospital that specializes in the delivery of babies for the past 41 years. My job for over four decades has me reviewing the status of the delivery mothers and visiting them. It used to be that it was very rare to see a 17-18 year old girl who was pregnant. Now days it is very usual to have a 13-14 year old girl giving birth. Not a week goes by that we don’t see someone under 16 having a baby. I tell you with first hand evidence and quite a bit of authority that its trending down in age. We are starting to see more 12-13 year old mothers and we recently had an 11 year old who gave birth with a 14 year old boyfriend. Seriously, what we are seeing on TV and what parents are allowing cannot possibly be healthy for the future of society.
Good post, but it won’t mean a thing to posters who believe if you try to maintain at least some standards you’re a nazi.
@Comment by A1A — Friday January 21, 2011 @ 4:31pm PST…*BINGO* – *BINGO* – *BINGO*!!!
Then it sounds like it’s a good thing that shows like ‘Skins’ and ‘Teen Mom’ are showcasing these problems, and forcing the rest of the country to acknowledge their existence.
Pulling these shows from the air won’t end the problem of teen pregnancy. Parents getting the courage to talk to their kids about safe sex, condoms, birth control AND abstinence will reduce teen pregnancies.
BLAME THE PARENTS! I am so fed up with people having kids and taking no responsibility for their offspring. to tell the truth, such crap is perpetuated by the ability to stay on welfare your entire life, and each subsequent generation doing the same. generation after generation takes no responsibility whatsoever for their own actions/lives or those of their kids.
And before the morons jump on this and try to make it a racial thing, be fully aware that there are more whites on welfare than other minorities. this isn’t a race thing, it is a lazy-good-for-nothing-live-off-the govt-entirely thing.
Perhaps these idiots wouldn’t have the time to engage in these activities if they were forced to go to school AND work – just like i had to from the age of 14 (and I am only 39, not a depression era woman). perhaps if they didn’t have the govt to pay for everything they would think twice. of course, there will always be idiots, but i think it would reduce the number if there was no safety net and kids had far less idle, unsupervised time.
this is my new whack-off-Wednesday show…
love it!
lol! way to take this all way too seriously! thanks for the laugh!
They are also endorsing teenage car theft and selling drugs. They stole a car and sold drugs like its normal for a teenager to do. I don’t know about you but I didn’t steal cars and sell drugs in highschool.
I don’t want to watch a TV show about what you did in high school.
No offense — I don’t want to watch a TV show about what I did in high school, either. I just don’t think it’s a terribly useful standard of what’s acceptable in entertainment.
Nor do I think that anything that a character does on TV is “being glamorized.” Back in my day, when the dinosaurs weren’t roaming around blocking the screen, TV characters blew stuff up, shot people, cheated on significant others, lied, stole things and even occasionally dressed up as a bat and made war on criminals.
It never made me think any of that stuff was a good idea. It’s fiction. It should be more interesting than high school.
Perfectly put, Kurt f’ing Busiek, I just became an even bigger fan of yours.
I was on the phone with my mom tonight and this subject came up. She’s not quite at the PCT end of the conservative spectrum, but she’s not far from it. Usually we’d go at it with our wildly opposing views, but she did bring up one point that I hadn’t considered and it made me empathize a bit.
Basically, she says the biggest driving force behind the PCT and wanting this show yanked from the airwaves is fear. Granted, parents have always feared for what their kids are exposed to, but today, kids have access to so much and barely talk to their parents anymore. She said she thinks parents are almost becoming an obsolete concept to kids, because there’s nothing a kid can ask their parent that they can’t just pull up on Google in 2 seconds. 16 yr old Susie wants to know if she should have sex with the high school quarterback so she’ll be popular? Why the hell bother asking mommy – so awkward – especially when there’s a website/message board/etc. for that. So basically, these parents are all just scared sh*tless because in a cultural sense, they’re becoming less and less relevant in their kid’s lives. The internet, tv, whatever has become smarter than Mom & Dad.
That was longwinded but it did make me stop and think, and I can sort of see where these people are coming from. But, alas, I still do not agree with them.
Of course, back in the day there were functioning standards and practices departments that enforced a production code ensuring that anyone who acted irresponsibly or with criminal intent received their just desserts. These days, these miscreants are celebrated as cultural icons.
The problem with this show is it is claiming to depict what high schoolers are doing. Don’t get me wrong it happens but the larger percentage is not screwing like horny rabbits. This show is approving that sort of behavior, taking morals and throwing them out the door. We become what we watch see eat and breath, thats a fact. So if we fill our body with filth, we there for act off filth, this though everyone is guilty of. You say the shows of your ancient youth had killing, bombs, cheating, ext. I would like the bet that their actions weren’t unpunished, it didn’t say, hey do this everyone else is. it said you do this, bad things happen.
The more corrupt things get the less responsible people become the worse unemployment will become. Dependency starts with Delinquency.
How quickly we’ve snapped back to “what people see on TV influences them.”
Wasn’t it just last week that the big roar was “If someone does something bad, no one is responsible but the person who did it”?
I expect the truth is somewhere in the middle there, but it’s odd nonetheless. Still, I’m a big believer in the idea that TV shouldn’t be our parents and teach us what large corporations feel is proper. Parents should be parents, including the choice of what entertainment their children are allowed to watch, instead of “the networks” making everything on TV “safe.”
So does the Grand Theft Auto video game…what’s your point?
It’s all about the advertisers. If they pull away, this show will be dead. Economics, plain and simple. And by the way, MTV is no start up Cable channel, they will not be able to survive on second and third tier advertising.
So kids are selling drugs when mom and dad aren’t around? I don’t think so!!!
How about a show about some kids who study hard, keep their noses out of trouble, finish school, start businesses, innovate, get rich, give back to their communities, help the next generation learn, reduce their dependance on foreign imports, grow the GDP, and save their country. Too late, China’s already on that, won’t work here.
TV shows aren’t parents. I was taught to have good values, good morals, respect and consideration, yet I still watched EVERYTHING that was on HBO, MTV growing up. If Parents were responsible for their children and their actions, you be surprised how much of this wouldn’t be an issue.
TV and Movies are entertainment, they are a luxury a society like us has, please stop using them as a crutch for weak parenting.
So you’re saying that your parents let you watch this stuff, and it had NO EFFECT on you whatsoever? It didn’t change the way you thought or felt about sex…yourself…others? It didn’t make you think that everybody else was out doing this stuff (even if you weren’t)? Think hard and be honest.
I can honestly say the teen sex comedies of the 80′s had no effect on my morals. Nor did any other movies or network TV.
You choose to do what you want to do with your life. People who don’t understand that fact should think twice about reproducing or trying to convince others that everybody is weak minded.
I can’t honestly say it didn’t have any effect, as the very concept of life is “action and reaction.” but I know the difference between “entertainment” and “life.” I was taught that, and just because I saw something on television didn’t mean i’d emulate it in real life.
Take a harmless show like SAVED BY THE BELL. You have a character like Zak Morris, who cheated his way out of homework, cheated on tests, lied to teachers to little to no consequence, so it’s not drugs that he’s pushing but can’t you say that’s equally as bad? (I’m stretching but you see, there’s really no line once you go down this path)
The larger question is where is the line drawn, and who draws it? Personally, I think it should be up to the parents and what their individual kids can handle, and not a government standard or from some special interest group.
Who decides what the PCT goes after? They are private run company, with their own agenda. I don’t think they should be saying what’s right and what’s wrong.
Contrary to popular belief most teenagers have not used marijuana and never will. And if they aren’t using it clearly they aren’t selling it! MTV is are bunch of a morons.
all i have to say is a lot people need to wake up.this is not 1910 any more. you all need to take a look at some of the polls on kids to see what thay have or havenot ben doing
Dave, about 2/3 of high school students have either tried, or regularly use marijuana. What studies have you been reading? More than that, of the 1/3 that didn’t try pot in school, half will try it soon thereafter (college, for instance) along with many other drugs. Pull your head out of your [the sand].
As was stated above, bad TV isn’t an excuse for bad parenting. But allowing bad, or in this case damaging, TV only adds to the confusion already bouncing inside a teenager’s head. More glorifying of sex and drugs, they don’t need. The fact that sex is easily available via the interwebz is also no reason to allow it to be viewed by children.
I don’t buy it. No study I’ve ever seen comes close to this number. Also take into account the kids that answered “yes” because they think anyone will know they gave that answer and want to appear “cool.” When I was in high school, there was a survey about how many of our students were sexually active and according to the results, about 70% of the freshman class was. Yeah right.
All these complaints about sex and drugs, yet the amount of overall gun violence on regular free-over the air TV is astronomical and is where these groups should be focusing their time.
If you don’t want your kids watching MTV, than they shouldn’t be allowed too, but to push “your” morals on the general public is ridiculous in my opinion.
And I’d like to point out that kids in high school are having sex and doing drugs, the more we ignore this the more it becomes out of control.
Look at all the conversations that have happened since the airing of the show, it’s forcing a conversation Americans are too conservative to discuss.
And how about MTV and Hollywood in general pushing their “morals” on the REAL public- the 99% of us who find this garbage highly objectionable?
In any case, MTV has crossed the line here. There is a huge probability that they have broken federal laws by filming underage actors (one as young as 15)in sexual situations.
This is going to be fascinating to watch (I’m referring here to MTV’s demise- not to “skins”).
Would everyone still br up in arms over this if it were adults playing the parts of these kids? Sex has been part of television for ages. Remember when Dawson’s Creek had one of it’s main characters involved in a sexual relationship with his teacher? Or how about when Buffy lost her virginity to Angel? Or, hey, why not just tune into just about ANY station during primetime and see just how much sex is out there. Look at the new Ashton Kutcher movie.
Where’s all the uproar over that?
Oh, wait, those were all ADULTS playing those roles. So is that what this is about and, if so, where should the line even be drawn? These are people acting, not a documentary, so why all the fuss?
It’s not what you and I think. It’s what the LAW thinks:
FEDERAL LAW (18 U.S.C. §2256) defines child pornography as “any visual depiction, including any photograph, film, video, picture, or computer or computer-generated image or picture, whether made or produced by electronic, mechanical, or other means, of sexually explicit conduct, where the production of the visual depiction involves the use of a minor engaging in sexually explicit conduct; or the visual depiction is a digital image, computer image, or computer-generated image that is, or is indistinguishable from, that of a minor engaging in sexually explicit conduct; or the visual depiction has been created, adapted, or modified to appear that an identifiable minor is engaging in sexually explicit conduct….”
Elsewhere in the statute (I’ll see if I can find it later) it states that it does not even matter if the people are actual minors- if they APPEAR to be minors, it’s considered child pornography.
Producing Child Pornography is defined under the same statute as “producing, directing, manufacturing, issuing, publishing, or advertising”.
I’m afraid you don’t know the meaning of a) pornography and b) explicit. This site is really attracting creepy people today.
Elsewhere in the statute (I’ll see if I can find it later) it states that it does not even matter if the people are actual minors- if they APPEAR to be minors, it’s considered child pornography.
That portion of the statute was ruled unconstitutional. It has to actual minors to be illegal.
The trick here is “engaging in sexually explicit conduct”
Not mimicking for entertainment purposes, but engaging. I saw zero actual sexual conduct when I watched the show the other day.
I saw a truly horrid remake of a brilliant British show but there was zero actual sex.
Did you even watch that dreck or did someone just tell you to be up in arms?
actions have consequences.
teenage pregnancy, by and large, continues the cycle of under education, impoverishment, drain on communal resources, reduced contribution to society. same for drug use or any kind of abusive behaviour.
each of us pay more in the present to cover these mistakes in the form of many social programs that would not be necessary if these kids just kept their legs together.
later, after we have payed more of our resources out in the present, and saved less for the future, we will get hit again as these under-educated, under-employed, former teen mothers contribute less to social security payments.
it’s a downward-spiral folks. glamorise it, de-stigmatize it, and legitimize it, and on the back-end will only be impovrishment and tears.
the only reason, until now, there have been exceptional success stories out of such a situation is because subsidizing has been affordable, eventually there will be a tipping point where it will no longer be so.
MTV had to of known even a toned down version of Skins for America would get this kind of reaction. This a country that freaks out because the cast of Glee who are in their 20′s posed for some sexy pictures and because they portray high schoolers on TV it promoted “pedophilia”. Maybe American TV channels will now learn that they should probably start experiment with adult sex and nudity before they try making a show like Skins for America. Leave the teen sex for the Europeans.
Just another bad attempt to steal a programming idea from BBC. Wake-up entertainment industry! !It’s hard to catch lightening in a bottle twice. I.e. Till Death Do Us Party and All In The Family. Here’s a novel idea for MTV – Play some music.
Haven’t seen the MTV version, but the UK original (co-written by teens the same age the characters) is one of the very few teen shows to get it right. It doesn’t patronise its audience, or reek of 40 year old writers trying and failing to write young characters.
I’m watching the British version right now on YouTube and the American version is just so tone deaf. Casting bratty kids and removing the wink and the nod doesn’t Americanize it. It just makes it hateful. They should have used the skeleton and thought it out better. Why not a Jewish kid in temple instead of a Muslim kid in a Mosque if you’re going to set it in Baltimore? Or a black kid in mass? And why did they cut the gay dance out? Was MTV more scared of Hollywood’s gay mafia than American parents?
Mostly the problem is casting. The American kids that were cast are just terrible. Their version comes off more like a Brit version of American Pie or Superbad while the American version comes off like a Larry Clark flick.
