Company Pictures, the Brit production company which makes Skins for MTV, is “extremely surprised” by the show’s U.S. furor. Especially as the first three seasons of the raunchier Brit version aired on BBC America virtually without controversy — albeit with nudity pixillated and swearing dipped. The Brit version has just started its 5th season. The UK original has also been freely available on the Internet. Execs has been scratching their heads because the first U.S. episode of Skins was almost a shot-for-shot remake of the UK original – but with the bad language and drugs references toned down from the British version which was far stronger in its depiction of drugs, sex, abortion, and self-harm. The show has never been that controversial here. A psychiatric charity complained about the depiction of a counsellor beating one teenager to death with a baseball bat. But Channel 4 only received 11 complaints. Not the show itself but the promos for the show have caused a little consternation. The UK broadcaster showed a pub brawl in a promo that sparked criticism. And the advertising watchdog Advertising Standards Authority banned a poster promoting the show, showing teenagers taking part in an orgy. The ASA said the image “could cause serious or widespread offence” and shouldn’t be seen by children.
The UK version’s insiders point out that that child pornography laws are just as strict over here as they are in the U.S. So the show was not allowed to show nudity or simulated sex with under 18-year-olds. And, as in the U.S. version, the nudity is mostly an illusion. In America, the PTC seems especially exercised about a shot due to air January 31st of actor Jesse Carere, 17, walking down a Baltimore street showing his bare ass. Again, the same shot was in the British version although the actor was over 18. “What they don’t seem to grasp is that the character is not naked. His genitalia are completely covered, the shot only showed his bare backside. It was the climax to a funny scene,” one show insider tells me. On set actors are covered up and genitalia is on show even off camera. Teenagers who appear in the show may have their modesty protected by nipple pads and flesh-coloured underwear.
Bryan Elsley, the show’s creator, came up with the idea for Skins back in 2005 after his then 19-year-old son Jamie complained there was nothing worth watching on TV. His son dismissed the then 45-year-old Elsley’s ideas for TV shows as “middle-class crap.” Why not do a show about teenagers as they really are, Jamie suggested. “As a dramatist you are looking for wonderful ideas, and I gradually realised they were there, under my nose. I was sitting in kitchens discussing them with other parents,” Elsley said. What was fresh about the UK Skins (the phrase “Skins party” is used to describe all-night parties where teenagers get drunk and trash the place) was that the average age of the writers’ room was 22. It was going to be teenage life written by those barely out of their teens. Channel 4 had been looking for a youth drama for its youth channel E4 and jumped at the pitch. Elsley said it was the fastest commission of his life. The first episode aired in January 2007 and was watched by 1.6 million, then a record audience for E4. ”The characters are so drug-addled, sex-obsessed and vacuous that most parents would consider them a grotesque parody of modern British youth,” fulminated the Daily Mail. But even the similarly right-leaning Daily Telegraph had to admit this new show was “great fun.”
However, Company Pictures is amping up the shock value on the latest 5th season which just began. Actress Laya Lewis told newspaper The Independent that it contains its most graphic sex scene yet. Lewis, aged 18, said she was asked to simulate an orgasm on her 2nd day on set. “The next thing I’m hearing from the director is, ‘In 15 seconds, Laya, we’d like you to climax’. I was like, ‘Sorry, what?’” Currently, this promo is running on Channel 4:

Yeah, well … anything that hints at sex and the radical Christian Nation, America, goes bat sh** crazy.
The biggest problem with Skins here is that it is flat out horrible.
who cares were not in the UK!
Well, I doubt there’d be much complaint over here, either, about someone getting beaten to death with a baseball bat. America loves itself some violence. Hell, that’s too tame for primetime CSI: you need to have a headless hooker who was beaten to death with a baseball bat. At least.
But holy crap, don’t dare suggest that women have anything resembling boobies. Not over hear. You see the word “nipple” anywhere in the Constitution? Didn’t think so, perverts.
im still trying to figure out where the brit shrink got the baseball bat from…they dont play baseball in england
he shouldve used a criquet bat
i was surprised the psychological associations across britain were not up in arms about the show, because not once did they present a positive view of psychologists
People don’t talk enough about how the girls on UK Skins were way way hotter than the girls on US Skins. Only show in human history where the UK version has better looking talent.
For reals! The men were hotter in the UK cast too. And they didn’t look so durn young. The US version made everyone so much younger.
BBC America stopped showing Skins after Season 3 to make way for more crap reality-programming and repeats of US sci-fi shows. BBC Video is still releasing season sets in the US (Season 4 was released a few weeks ago), and will presumably continue to do so.
None of this really matters, however, since US fans of Skins UK can “find” new episodes online soon after UK broadcast. I watched the Season 5 premiere last night online and loved it. If the UK version is standing by its rule of finding young, novice actors for each “generation” of the cast, they’re doing a great job of finding talented people — unlike the US version, whose cast has zero talent.
im going crazy because im a big skins fan and want to watch season 5. where did u find the episode?
Let’s just say that if you have the “warez” to do it, “lobby” yourself onto the Internet and “org”anize a search.
I think the US should take a chill pill and worry about greater problems their country has like giving an 11 year old a rifle and trying to send him to prison for the rest of his life (tried as an adult). Only the US and Somalia go against universal declaration on the rights of the child. Why don’t the Parent Teacher Association (whatever theiy’re called) care about that??
You get a shitstorm from a few teeneagers depicting what real life is for some people and the Parent Teacher Television Losers lose their mind. Why not attack the ridiculous firearm laws your country has rather than what is on the TV!!
Please do not equate Parents Television Council, a self-proclaimed watchdog group which is actually an extreme right-wing anti-sex, anti-gay hate group with Parent Teacher Associations which are actual groups of parents and teachers with a agenda to improve the educational experience.
How many complaints has the U.S. Skins *actually* generated? I have a hunch that if the attention whores of the Parents Television Council didn’t exist, and the media wasn’t so quick to blindly pick up every single press release they issue, there wouldn’t be a controversy here at all.
But please, show me some data if I’m wrong; I’m genuinely curious.
I too am interested. Do the US have anything similar to OFCOM? Any independant regulator for the US communications industries?? WITHOUT a political biased or sponsorship??
There is the FCC, but as far as I know it isn’t regulating/controlling the content of cable networks.
The FCC has no jurisdiction over cable.
I’m so tired of hearing about the controversy this show has generated. It’s not working in the U.S for a number of reasons, and being prudish isn’t one of them.
1. It’s on MTV. The show would have to be on showtime or hbo to get away with some of the things they’ve done in the u.k version. It’s awkward hearing swear words bleeped out and drugs referenced as ‘narcotics’.
2. Hire American writers. American kids do not use British slang. I was expecting one of the teens to say ‘wanker’ at one point.
3. The cast should be between the ages of 18-22. No one wants to see simulated sex acts performed by 15 year olds. That’s awkward.
4. Acting lessons for the entire cast. The acting is atrocious, really wooden. They make the cast of degrassi look like professionally trained Julliard actors.
5. Improve the production values. The show looks like it’s filmed in Canada. I know it is, but it shouldn’t look that way.
6. Revamp the advertising. Right now the ads are coming off a little try-hard. Teens can tell when they are being advertised to by old people. The “oh-look-at-us-hipsters-posing-half naked-in-what-looks-like-an-orgy-while-giving the-finger-and-puffing-out-smoke” comes of as really lame.
7. Be realistic. Teen life isn’t sex and drugs 24/7 there’s others things going on as well.
Anyways, just my 2 cents from your target demographic. Hope you’re listening MTV.
I agree. Particularly with numbers 1 and 3.
I agree with this post. The acting was really awful, I turned it off halfway through.
Well said! They should hire you for series, oh sorry, season 3.
hate that violence is great but sex is so taboo…we are one messed up society…we need less crap watchdogs like ptc and more that want less violence and less guns in everyone’s hands… skins bbc yes is much better but i hope we ride this out and mtv doesnt cave to the minority looneys…
Howard Stern had it right all these years!!! This country is so uptight when it comes to sex
I would say that about 23 American Teenagers have watched BBC America during it’s existence. That is why it went unnoticed.
Even if 5 million teenagers were watching it on BBC America that group wouldn’t have made a peep. It’s when you use their precious Americn youth that they lose their minds. They don’t give a crap what British teens are up to. It’s completely warped.
I am a huge fan of the UK SKINS series. The absolute main reason why the U.S. version is failing is due to its poor choice of casting. The pilot for the U.S. version was poorly directed and written, but I was suprised to find that the writing/direction was pretty decent in the second episode. Unfortunately…that some-what decent writing meant nothing due to its dialogue being delivered by non-professional teen actors who lack any sort of emotional range.
In terms of the U.S. going crazy over the “sexual” elements. Who the **** cares. If the show was at least good, it wouldn’t matter that all these ad companies are pulling out, because guess what? New companies would jump on board if the ratings were there! Take a look at Jersey Shore. While not exactly A-quality material, its entertaining and even though everyone complained about and some pulled ads… its still here and bigger than ever.
can’t really compare the two. jersey shore doesn’t have to do with under 18′s having sex, drugs, etc. that’s too taboo for the US right now. maybe its the medicinal ganga talking but if we look at the world right now as the United States would the US be considered like a southern state? Where we’re always behind the times or curve by about a decade or so???
i also disagree with you on jersey shore not being A- quality material entertainment. did you not see last night when sammi punched ronnie??? great build up by editors.
well put, ‘The US is The Southern State Of The World’
As a fan of E4 originals, I don’t see the problem. Misfits had a scene where a teen has sex with 80 years old person, hah, I heard they wanna remake it in US.
now that is something i would like to see. US Misfits? it wouldnt be the same without kelly saying wanker every few minetes
they definatley wouldn’t have the sex with a 80 year old on it….
don’t ruin my day with such hate speech. a US remake of Misfits? Take my freedom and my dignity but don’t ruin another UK show for me!
UK Skins didn’t cause much controversy because it clearly established that is was depicting the lives working class teenagers, who I presume no one over there gives a crap about. US Skins is however trying to fool everyone that the show is about the average American teenager, something entirely false.
thats not true, UK skins is about what everyday british teens do and are doing. they’re not all ‘working class’ on it, its just a insight as to what goes on it these peoples lives. america isn’t ALL perfect you know…… i bet some of the things on skins happens all the time in US
The PTC is just another hysterical society that follows the Puritan traditions that founded this country: the inability to sleep at night knowing that somewhere, someone is having a good time.
110% Couldn’t have been put any better.
I agree completely! and I’m American too…
No mention here that the age of consent in the UK is 16. I have seen Brits here in the states trying to get into the pants on 16-year-olds. It is super creepy, unless you like the idea of some guy taking advantage of your 16-year-old daughter. I recall that the (slightly more responsible) UK show “Joy of Teen Sex” mentioning that STD rates are pretty high in the UK. I would need to check those numbers, but let’s bring those into the equation, shall we?
Definitely. The UK is actually very sexually repressed. We joke about it quite often – it’s only compared to the US that we’re liberal. Mainland Europe is far more relaxed and have far fewer teenage pregnancies and STD’s than the UK or the US.
Actually there are HUNDREDS of other countries that are FAR more sexually repressed than both the US and UK. Case in point: Asia and the entire Middle East.
It’s not about sexual repression its about the US being the least culturally evolved nation in the Western World.
There seems to be a HUGE lack of acceptance of opinions and ideas which are different to oneself.
The reason why Skins has caused such controversy and ludicrous claims of child pornography is the same reason why many Americans don’t understand real satire. Everything is black or white. Republican or Democrat, North or South, Good or Bad. It’s pathetic that so many people who haven’t even seen the programme will complain about it or go out of their way to watch it (knowing they will be offended).
I’m in Canada and we get a LOT of UK shows where I live on the west coast, as well as Skins UK. I watched it since it came out, and there was no bleeping out or blurs or anything – it was the same as in the UK. Here our age of consent is 16 (used to be 14 when it started to air) and we don’t freak out over crap like that because it really does happen.
Today I was sitting with my friends talking about the Skins US vs Skins UK when my friend pulled up episode one on the computer and showed us just how censored it was. I got the “we’re paranoid that someone might get a bad idea” vibe right away because of the censoring and “toning-down”. I mean, sure, that happens in Canada, but I honestly don’t watch many American shows. From experience I know they’re a lot worse.
And this porn claim? Really? I mean, I get how maybe a few pedos would watch this, but still. There’s 6 billion people in this world!
And this 1 person is still faithful to Skins UK all the way.
the u.s uproar over the remake of skins is because it has teens including ones under age having sex. some thing a lot of people including exec go bat shit over. and not surprise the pychologicl associate had a fit over the episode where the shrink beat Eddie with the bat.for do not think real shrinks take kindly to even a fake one murdering some one in gives a bad name to the proffession. for seen the u.k version of skins. the u.s would proably tone down the beating with the bat. or censor the blood from the guy getting beaten.
you no what im sick of this uk and u.s heres whats up, skins u.s has only had a few shows and u.s skins is about how probley you can say a little bit lower class teens get around and what us americans find attricative in people also this is very important SKINS WAS ALL WRITTEN BY THE SAME PERSON IF YOU DON’T LIKE IT CONSULT HIM THEN SEE WHAT HE THINKS AS LONG AS HES MAKING MONEY AND A LOT OF AMERICANS LIKE IT HE DOES NOT CARE .ah nough said just be thankful for skins
Using teen actors to perform sex/simulated sex acts is child pornography. Just because the people filming the show aren’t working for the porn industry does not mean that the perverts out there aren’t watching the show for their own gratification. MTV should care more about protecting our children from pedophiles than making profits. Just use adult actors and all of this controversy goes out of the window. And oh, yeah, WE’RE NOT BRITAIN!
So should we not have any adverts showing babies in nappies (diapers) in case a paedophile is watching?
Or have images of naked horses on TV in case a beastophile is watching?
Or have images of young children playing football (soccer) in shorts just in case a paedophile is watching?
or have image of adults murdering other adults just in case a potential serial killer is watching?
Some of you Americans really need to learn to raise your own children and stop expecting the TV to do it.All of these comments are really fuelling the stereotype of ‘Lazy Fat Americans’ who can’t be bothered to raise and take responsibility for his own child. It’s MTV’s corporate responsibility to create profits and it is YOUR responsibility and the state’s to protect your children from paedophilia.
no your not in the UK but your just forgetting were skins started and were it began here in the uk but oh no americans have coped the same show, just about same charters and same script and guess what you’ve don the same with shameless. what else will you lot do eh
Using teen actors to perform sex/simulated sex acts is child pornography. Just because the people filming the show aren’t working for the porn industry does not mean that the perverts out there aren’t watching the show for their own gratification
A few words here about this piece of shit country called “america.” First, it appears to me that england must have a HELL of alot more freedom than the US does, and it doesnt surprise me if the STD rate is higher there cause they seem to swap partners every two minutes. Second, if the STD rate is high in the US, its not because people are cheating on each other left and right, its cause of the damn deviant homosexuals that make us look bad as a country. Third, i hate the US, and am ashamed to live in it. The US version of skins is pathetic and not watchable cause its actors and content suck completely. Failure on the talent search.
The UK version actors are ten times hotter than the US ones, and way more talented. The US has a percentage of “fat, lazy and stupid people” of about 98% and thats fucking pathetic.
Ive been saying for the last ten years or more that parents in the US dont properly raise their kids, and it’s evident in the way they act, thus why i hate the country.
No country is more sexually repressed than the US. our laws are retarded, our people are retarded, with few exceptions, me being one of them, and most of our cows of women are prude and bitchy. You basically gotta lay out a C note just to talk to one must less get them in bed. pathetic.
This show definitely belongs on HBO in the US. If it made it that far, and chose less uglier actors, it might have been successful. MTV became a loser of a network the minute it stopped showing music vidoes and became the mecca for loserish reality shows no one gives a damn about.
The UK version of skins has caught my attention. I still think it borders on soft core porn, but the UK laws are different apparently, and the show was much better made in the UK. Cheers to that, and way to fail as usual america, i fucking hate you.
You really need to take your medication AD.
I’m going to assume tha this whole bizarre post is some kind of Swiftian satire?
This has to be a joke, you rail against how we in america have less freedoms and are sexually repressed and at the same time condemn homesexuals as deviant? IF this is serious, how do you not consider yourself one of the retarded. I hope this was just a poorly translated sarcastic piece.
The UK version is a clever parody of animals who use up large amounts of drugs and vaginas. Conservative US criticism may have a valid point that the US version is not played as a parody, like the crude but funny Animal House movie. (BTW AD, don’t hate the US if you pay women “C notes”; that says a lot about you not us).
Well, as a american, I can honestly say I’m not fat, lazy, or sexually repressed.
They should’ve revamped it completely and made it more “American”. Have new characters in which American teen can relate to. Not a copy of the UK version. I mean a teen in the UK has a totally different lifestyle to an American teen. And I agree with Real-teen!
i think that Uk skins is amazing, its funny and kinda true. when the americans were going to remake it, they should have watched the UK version. i dont see why america is so uptight about this. Its set when the charecters are 16,17 and 18. this fits in with the laws and shit for us. to fit in with american law, they would have had to make it about when they were in uni or summat. but then it would be the same. if feel sorry for america tbh. whats your problem with the swearing? on the first uk episode there is a shit load of swearing but in the Us one they dont have any….. we have such a better tv law
The UK people are surprised about the US reaction to a show on MTV. Is this faux controversy their first exposure to the idiots among the American public? We care more about vote controversy in American Idol than we do voting irregularities in Florida (2000) and Ohio (2004) that twice delivered a moron to the White House.
We live in a country where a Louisiana senator tells everyone about his absolute staunch beliefs in family values before he visits his prostitute. Of course, said senator was re-elected with roughly 65% of the vote.
We are a nation of idiots who get worked up about faux controversies and contrived issues such as a television series yet cannot muster an iota of outrage over the fact that investment banks own our government, or at least our (money) printing presses.
