Boardwalk Empire deserved its win for best drama. Very good writing.
There always seem to be upsets in the TV category….not so in the movie category and I have a feelin’ the Oscars are going to be a snooze fest.
Agreed. Best new show on television. Absolutely incredible. By the way: how great is it that their is finally something in the zeitgeist that talks about World War I!! People tend to forget what a damaging impact it had on the psyche of this country.
How To Train Your Dragon was infinitly better than Toy Story 3, which is saying a lot because TS3 was very good.
I was thinking the same thing even though I did not see either one. If you asked my 8 year old niece which was better – Definitely, How to Train Your Dragon.
Stopped clock being right and all that, but many of these winners were richly deserved.
I watched a doco about the HFPA (not sure it’s the same one Nikki refers to?) that skewers the GGs and explains what goes on behind the scenes. At the end, however, the film points out that despite all the ridiculous schmoozing the GGs often come up with more interesting and deserving winners than the Oscars or Emmys. Go figure.
I am very happy for Katey Segal’s win. I hope the Emmy voters are watching.
I love Scott Rudin trying to act is if he’s human. He’s a talented producer who is also a sociopath and abusive to all who work for him. He hates his parents and loathes the directors, writers, actors he hires. He has a cruel and abusive personality and no amount of therapy or lack there of can change his sadistic ways. Scott has definitely had some serious media coaching to “say all the right things” and “thank all the right people” to continue his climb.
Scott Rudin is a pathological despot with talent.
AMEN!! I was thinking the same thing. Why do people continue to try and portray this guy as if he’s some patron saint of indie film. He is a flat out psychopath.
There isn’t a universe where How to train your Dragon is better than Toy Story 3!
delighted that katey won. but gervais seemed drunk off his butt and totally unfunny.
Was very happy for Colin Firth’s win. Also thought THE SOCIAL NETWORK very deserving, a real tossup with THE KING’S SPEECH, however. Thought Mr. Rush would win Best Supporting Actor.
The Social Network hit the asshole trifecta:
Scott Rudin, David Fincher, and Dana Brunetti
Truly three disliked people.
I’ll admit Rudin and Fincher have talent, but Brunetti got there by kissing a lot of ass…on the mouth.
Nice beard, though.
Brunetti discovered the material and saw the potential for a film. The books themselves contain no real drama and it was his prescience that began the process. Without Brunetti the film would not exist. You cannot say that about the other players.
I’m glad for Katey Sagal, whom I recently saw perform wonderfully in “Harps and Angels” at the Mark Taper Forum. It’s her time, now. I think the foreign film category was a real upset. I didn’t see that one coming. I bet Oscar doesn’t either….
I don’t care how many awards they give it- Social network is not the years best. Kings speech- Black Swan- TS3 – Kids are alright are all superior films
To be honest, the lack of any representation of ‘True Grit’ at the GGs makes them kind of irrelevant wrt pointers for Oscars. Greatly approve of the Christian Bale win, however.
What’s the point of awards season if the winners are already known by December now? The Social Network, David Fincher, Colin Firth, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, and Melissa Leo. Any doubt those will be the Oscar winners? Might as well mail it to them an cancel the show. Only one who might be vulnerable is Leo because True Grit’s LEADING lady comes into supporting at SAG and likely the Oscars which is an abomination as she is in True Grit for the vast majority of the movie.
Would love to see Bening upset Portman at the Oscars though. She was just as good without trying nearly as hard.
