Here is the “chance” encounter between Steve Carell’s Michael Scott and Ricky Gervais’ David Brent on tonight’s episode of The Office. The scene appears to be largely unscripted, with the two actors showing off their improv skills. The most intriguing exchange comes towards the end.
David: Where are you working?
Michael: Dunder Mifflin.
David: Do you have any jobs going?
Michael: No, not right now.
David: Just let me know.
Hmmm….
TV Editor Nellie Andreeva - tip her here.

I guess you had to be there.
Ricky Gervais the new Seth McFarlane. It’s not just enough he create a show, he’s got to plaster himself all over it and increase his own celebrity. We get it, you need to be acknowledged for anything you do.
Agree with this. It’s very nauseating.
Also, WHAT IS UP WITH HIS TEETH?
It is SO distracting. Are fucked up teeth so the norm in Britain that audiences don’t care at all?
Christ!
I doubt if Gervais needs more celebrity. He has created a memorable franchise. Not as good as Extras, but quite funny…
are people kidding here? The UK Office was the BEST show. So, so glad that Carell has the sense to leave this series. They really need to shut it down. It turned into a cartoon a long time ago. Ricky Gervais is funny, not a cartoon character. Humor with some thought behind it, what a concept!
How is a 2 minute scene “plastering himself all over it”?
I can see complaining about it in the British version of the show, but if he didn’t take the starring role in the show he created, we may not be enjoying his comedy now.
I suppose Simon Cowell fits in there too, right?
Yes, one guest appearance in 7 seasons is really crossing the line of decency.
Agree totally. It’s one scene. And a very funny one. Nice nod to the fans of both shows.
The people from the US The Office have been asking Ricky to come on the show for yearrrs. He only agreeded to do a short cameo to say farewell to Steve, since hes leaving the show this season.
Haven’t watched The Office in years, but i would tune in regularly to watch those two.
I am well over Gervais’s fame hungry act now – but it needs to be said that in that one minute you saw the tone of Brent and The Office in the UK that made it so successful – that the US version never captured.
BC — So appearing in one scene in the 7th season of a TV show is “plastering yourself all over it”? Good to know.
A David Brent/Michael Scott road movie please.
Are you serious, just couple of minutes he appears and now he’s “trying to increase his own celebrity”. Like really, are you going to say what happened in the golden globes he also tried to make himself bigger also. Come on, just be mature all about it. Also he didn’t even say anything or acted or even hinted, uhhh hello I’m the creator give me the credit I deserve. No he just appeared as a character who leaves you guessing what could happen next when he finishes talking to michael. Like for me that was one of the highlights of this season.
You guys complaining about him realize that most people find him hilarious, right? And maybe I’m missing something, but I rarely see him on TV! I took it as a treat to see him do comedy while the GGs.
My bad, since you already think he’s over exposed, then you clearly hated that show too. Never mind.
I was very much against this (the two series shared practically the same script for an episode as well as duplicate characters making it, in my opinion, two parallel universes that shouldn’t cross), but I have to admit, I couldn’t help but smile watching it. I loved the way Gervais picked David Brent’s character right up as though no time has passed– just a reminder what made the British Office one of my most beloved series of all time. Carell was pretty good too.
Wouldn’t Brent notice that Michael Scott has also a documentary camera crew following him?
Also, maybe Gervais will take over for Carell as the new boss??
He did notice. Right away.
What about the exchange made Nellie think it was improv? Especially given the final lines being a specific tease to the audience.
Give writers their credit, Nellie.
A cute little bit in any case. Surprised they didn’t wait for Carell’s last episode to do it.
Definitely not improv considering Gervais did that shtick in his XFm shows with Merchant and Pilkington.

Looks like sense of humour by-passes are the hot new surgery in La-La-Land…
Oy. Sorry Gervais interrupted your annual Hollywood stroke-a-thon at the Globes, but he is a comic genius.
Nice cameo. Wish the ‘that’s what she said’ joke had been better. But anyway, how is Scott supposed to let Brent know if there are any jobs, if they didn’t even exchange contact info?
All you mooks who have no appreciation for Ricky Gervais’s gut-busting humor and this wonderful little cameo on the Office (that us fans have been begging to have happen for years) can, in the words of the Brits, “SOD OFF.”
Seriously, all this guy does is try to make you laugh, and he succeeds at it repeatedly, and what do I hear? Complaining from so many Hollywood whiners that he punctured your little bubble for once.
What makes you think the whiners live in hollywood? Thanks to drudge linking up on a regular basis, this site stopped being solely for hollywood a long time ago.
I’ll clarify, I didn’t mean plastering himself all over the Office.
WSJ Op Ed, Golden Globes, Piers Morgan, Office Cameo, Literally Plastered Ad On Deadline for “The Ricky Gervais Show”, All in the course of 3 weeks.
I love the Office (both versions), I love Extras, I even enjoy the Ricky Gervais show from time to time. But he is coming off very self indulgent and smug the more and more I seem him.
My opinion.
Because that’s not what all actors do when they have something to promote-the press rounds?
I don’t think I consider an Op Ed to WSJ about Atheism and hosting the Golden Globes “the press rounds.”
Again, I like Gervais as the creative force behind a show, and sometimes his acting (although definitely not his films so far). But, Gervais doing “the press rounds” for the sheer attention I don’t care for.
Alright, I stand corrected as I obviously did not know he did an Op Ed for Atheism. That’s my bad. But don’t most celebrities use their name and status to get their opinions out there? Clooney, The Pitts, Travolta, and Cruise immediately come to mind.
But I do disagree on saying it was for “sheer attention”. I may be wrong here too, but him surfacing seems to be primarily for two reasons:
1. Golden Globes
2. The Office cameo
Some people celebrities (mentioned above) seem to not care whether they are in the news or not to make their opinion heard. Let’s not forget, that (at least in the US) Gervais does not have the celebrity status that they do. So he is taking advantage of his momentary time like anybody (passionate/with opinions) would.
I love, love, love Ricky Gervais. And what a self-effacing fame whore he is! If he was really such a fame addict one to toot his own horn at the drop of a hat, he would have his own symphony orchestra by now. I think he is wildy talented, hysterically funny, obviously intelligent and he seems like such a great guy. He has been in the business for such a short time to have made such a lasting impression. He is a classic and I can’t wait to see what he does next!
The scene “appears to be unscripted.” Great Nellie, please do share your amazing mind-reading powers that allow you to make a statement like that.
“The Office” is and has always been a highly-scripted show. The fact so many viewers assume it’s improvised, a al “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” is a testament to the abilities of the show’s talented writers.
This reminds of that episode of “The Sopranos” after the premiere of the Billy Baldwin slasher movie they financed when the mobster says to the other, “Hey, did you know someone else writes what the actors say? They don’t make it up themselves.” “Getthefuckouddaheya.” “Yeah, even DeNiro.”
I hope to hell it’s an improv because no writer should want credit for that pointless beat. It also looks more than usual like it was shot on cellphones by someone who had to go to the bathroom. Nevertheless, in one minute, Ricky Gervais shows that he has more chops than Carell.
I totally agree with you, Santayana. Gervais was genius in that role. I’ve never understood the hype on Carell. In small, featured roles he can be amusing (Anchorman, Bruce Almighty), but as a lead, he is dull, uncharismatic, unfunny, and a little creepy (Get Smart, Evan Almighty, Date Night).
Plastered all over it? Its the first time he has EVER been on the show. Glad to know that you understand what your talking about. Yet another brilliant comment.
All the negativity is from idiots who know him as the guy who hosted the golden globes. Seeing this all too brief guest spot makes me wanna go back and watch the real office, the bbc office, which i will do this weekend.
No wonder Carrel wants off that show, he walks around the office with a fake greek accent? embarrassing!
I for one think that The US version would have been much better on Pay – the UK version had almost zero limits on what they could say or show. The US version has to appeal to the common denominator to satisfy the advertisers. But it’s managed to make a few stars out of the cast who will go on to bigger and better. But the original is a classic ground-breaking show that will never be matched. It’s sheer genius in its writing & execution.
