EXCLUSIVE: Will Ferrell has committed to a four-episode arc on NBC’s comedy The Office. He will play a branch manager who comes from the home office and is just as inappropriate as Steve Carell’s Michael Scott character. NBC is still figuring out exactly when the episodes will air, but Ferrell has committed to one episode beyond Carell’s finale, to help create a bridge.
Ferrell called the producers, offering his services because he’s a fan and wanted to commemorate Carell’s swan song by taking part in The Office star’s seventh and final season on the show. Ferrell and Carell are close friends who co-starred in Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy. The stint brings Ferrell back to NBC, where he launched his career on Saturday Night Live. Additionally, he has done arcs on such series as NBC’s 30 Rock and HBO’s Eastbound & Down, which he also produces.
“We found Steve Carell when he was nothing but a movie star and we turned him into a television star,” said The Office exec producer Paul Lieberstein (who doubles as the annoying Dunder Mifflin HR executive Toby Flenderson, Michael Scott’s arch-nemesis. “We are proud to continue The Office’s tradition of discovering famous talent, and we hope that once America gets a good look at Will, they’ll see what we see, tremendous raw sexuality.”

Nooooooooooooooooooo, not Will Ferrel… oh God, can’t stand the guy. No one will ever replace ‘Michael Scott’. I’m afraid this great show as we know it, has come to an end.
:/
Super. Not only is a fantastic actor leaving, but a horrible one is taking his place…
How long into the show until we hear Will yelling and see him in his underwear?
No kidding! And the average I.Q. of watchers will drop dramatically
YEAHHH WILL!!
Haha! That made me chuckle!
This is great news, only thing that would be better would be me coming on the show. I’d Danny Duberstein the shit of that role.
I’m not a huge fan of the big stars on this show, since it takes away from it being a faux-reality show (in what Scranton universe do they not recognize Kathy Bates and Will Farrell?). But while I liked the old improv-heavy style better, I’m sure it will still be hilarious, as the show has continued to be.
Who’s taking over for Carrell, though? Or is the series ending?
This royally sucks. Took me a long time to get into the office and its one of my favorite shows now………and now with Will Ferrel well I guess all good things must come to an end…….he is just a big of idiot as he is a lousy actor…….this is so disappointing.
are you all incredibly stupid and don’t see the humour in paul lieberstein’s comments?
Lol
Will Ferrell is a saint!!! And it is going to be amazing!
I one hundred percent disagree with this statement.
“We found Steve Carell when he was nothing but a movie star and we turned him into a television star.”
People, that’s called SATIRE.
How do you watch the show and not understand that?
stop being so negative, just see how it turns out…
I really hate Will Ferrell and Ricky Gervais, they aren’t funny.
Don’t know where I’ve been, but I didn’t know that “Toby” was executive producer! Love it when I learn something new. And, “…just a movie star…” was meant tongue in cheek, I believe.
I love the show…and Will was pretty darn good in elf. Hm, maybe. but Steve Carrell is as fine an actor as will. I don’t think Will will ( don’t ya love that?) detract at all. probably bounce off each other pretty will uh well. I’m just so distressed its ending at all……:(
“Additionally, he has done arcs on such series as NBC’s 30 Rock”
Arcs? I think was on screen for maybe 20 seconds total.
I’m still hoping they eventually replace him with Rhys Darby.
Oh pleasepleasepleaseplease….
Yes! He would be a great fit! Wish the producers had thought of that. He’s great at portraying a guy who so desperately wants to be in the gang but fails miserably by pushing it too hard. He would be perfect!
I was disappointed to hear Farrel may be taking over since he will likely play his character as a loud, panicky guy but now I am even more disappointed now that you mentioned Rhys Darby since he’d be perfect as a replacement.
If I had two bullets in a gun and were in a room with hitler, bin laden, and toby I’d shoot Toby twice
I think we need to rephrase this,
Paul Lieberstein is the devil from hell.
I liked the last episode from the office, i think they are getting back the idea that the show should not revolve around michael scott, if you watch closely, the last 2 seasons where all about him and jim and pam, no other characters.
This last episode it was cool to see other stories going on, hopefuly it will keep like that, it might not be as bad when steve leaves.
That would be looking at the positive side I guess.
The last two seasons were anything but about Jim and Pam. Actually a few special episodes were about them (the marriage, the delivery) but they haven’t been the focus of the show since they’re together. They’re mostly a regular couple who has regular events in their life and they have been taking a back seat.
Instead, the show has been multiplying romantic stories with Dwight-Angela-Andy, Andy-Erin-Gabe, Angela-Dwight-Pam’s friend, Michael dating Pam’s mom, etc. Too often, it’s at the expenses of the office life and work related situations. There has actually been too much soap opera for my tastes as most of the stuff feels contrived and artificial. Parks and Recreation handles the relationships better as it feels natural for most of the characters to have a love life.
WHaT???!!!!?! i thought they were gonna bring in Danny Mcbride??? O.O im not sure abt this move
the office will never be the same…..
That sums it up. They would be fools to try to replace Micheal with someone with the same personality. They won’t try to do that because it can’t be done. It will NEVER be the same. So sad.
Okay so I am a huge fan of the office. I pretty much think Steve is the biggest character of them all, so the fact that he is leaving makes me sad to say the least. But to bring in a mediocre actor such as Will Ferrel is just an insult to the actual comedy of the show because he seems to have a reputation with an exception of anchor man, to suck the humor out of everything. To name a few examples, bewitched, elf (Jim Carry would have been such a better option), The other guys, you catch my drift. My point is, his career peaked with Saturday night live.So who’s idea was it to ruin The Office?
Danny Duberstein rocks! Man it would be great if some of that Curb Your Enthusiasm magic would spill and mix with The Office, it would be EPIC!!!
I don’t know what to think about this. It’s sad Steve’s leaving and Will’s funny but I feel like Will might take the spotlight a little. Which I don’t want. 7 years of amazing work needs to be recognized the right way.
