Simon & Schuster today is about to market the heck out of O, its anonymously written and self-proclaimed provocative novel about Barack Obama’s 2012 re-election campaign.
That’s right — the campaign that hasn’t happened yet. Supposedly, it’s penned by someone “who’s been in the room with Obama”. This is kinda different from Primary Colors, the thinly disguised roman a clef about Bill Clinton’s 1992 presidential campaign and also written anonymously until journalist Joe Klein came forward to claim responsibility. That novel sold a ton of copies for rival publishing house Random House, and S&S is obviously trying to capitalize on that success. Will Hollywood bite? “We haven’t discussed it with anyone yet, but it’s early, and no one’s read a thing about it until today,” S&S publisher Jonathan Karp just told Deadline.
Primary Colors was deemed a stiff at the box office when Universal made it into a comedy in 1998 with Mike Nichols directing and Elaine May writing the adapted screenplay. Still, that script was nominated for an Oscar along with Kathy Bates for Supporting Actress. S&S is owned by CBS Inc, so maybe Showtime or even CBS Films might get a crack at it first. Meantime, here’s a (satirical) memo Karp just sent his authors:
On January 25, we’ll be publishing a secret novel simply titled O, about President Obama’s campaign for re-election in 2012. The author of the novel wishes to remain anonymous. You may be asked to comment on whether or not you are the author. If so, it would be great if you refrained from commenting, in solidarity with the principle that a book should be judged on its content and not on the perceived ideology of its author.
The author, an individual with integrity and talent, is someone who has been in the room with Barack Obama and knows the political world intimately. In fact, you may know this person, or know of this person — if you are not in fact the author yourself.
Thanks in advance for your consideration. I apologize for the impersonality of this blind group email, but this seems like the best way to protect the author’s identity. I hope you enjoy the book. It’s terrific.
For a sneak preview of O and a special video address from the President of the United States, go to www.othebook.com.

Did S&S create that graphic image of the mockingly large Dumbo ears to hint that the mood of the coming book and movie will be in the same vein?
The working title will most likely be changed to “Run Hillary Run.”
If Hollywood wants to showcase it’s ever so blatant left-wing bias even more, then go for it.
Yawn.
Double Yawn. The Right wing trolls on this board aren’t even worthy of contempt anymore.
“Primary Colors” was history & actual events presented as a roman a clef. “O” is fiction as it has not happened. Apples and Oranges.
The 2012 election is 2 years away. Anything can and will happen. It is impossible for the “author” (conjecturist?) to know who the GOP candidate will be and what roads they will travel to get the nomination.
the all seems very sneaky and misleading and um a book about his 2012 re-election campaign… one thats yet to happen… huh?
“Will Hollywood bite?”
Of course they will. Liberals still think he can walk on water and cure Gabby Gifford’s gunshot wound.
“someone who has been in the room with Barack Obama and knows the political world intimately.”
In other words, one of the millions who’ve attended the president’s rallies in the last 4 years (…”in the room”), and someone who looks things up online (“…the political world intimately”).
The real question is how quickly will it hit the shelves at Blockbuster? The day after it’s released? Or will it go directly to DVD? Will any video store outside either coast’s major cities even bother clearing a space on their shelves for the two copies they will carry?
Will Blockbuster still be in business by the time the movie comes out?
Perhaps I should take a lesson from them. I’m going to make a movie about myself winning an Oscar in 30 years, but I’m not going to tell you who I am.
Sounds like 10 year-olds are running S&S
Don’t get too bent out of shape folks. This is not what you think it is…
“Someone who’s been in the room with Obama” is so broad that it could be a maid who once cleaned a room Obama was staying in.
Man, no one went to see the actual video on the website did they? This is a joke people, almost like an SNL skit. Watch the video and you’ll see…jeez the left and right can’t stop jumping at each others throats whenever the word “Obama” is printed, this polarization is getting old.
Yep. Stay classy, liberals.
And conservatives would know what about class…?
That presidential address on that site was classic!
“I’m all the change you’re gonna get, brutha.”
When I see “O” I think Oprah. She does basically own the letter, correct?
