Another network full of useless content that mindless drones will watch simply because it’s in 3D. This speaks volumes for the consumer base… Ooooh let’s watch this documentary about Sea Turtles for the next hour – it’s in 3D!!!!
Well, welcome to the future!
Of course, the first wave of 3D channels are the generic nature documentaries/”Flying Over…” type programs that populated the first HD channels ten years ago (Discovery HD Theater, HDNet). Back in 99′, 2000, early adopters were buying HD packages not because there was anything of note worth watching, but simply because they could show off their new HDTVs. I expected 3DTV to be much the same.
If the industry is serious about 3D, it’s going to be a few years until consumers see general interest channels with 3D programing.I’m interested in checking out a scripted drama or sitcom in 3D, for no other reason than to see if it’s a viable format for these types of shows.
Mindless? No, those are some pretty good shows and very educational.
Gimmick? Maybe but it was pretty cool watching a Hockey Game in 3D. Sure I knew the outcome but when that first check happened and the Toronto player appeared to explode out of the TV into the living room, that was all I needed to see.
When they address the dimness issue with 3D viewing – only then will I consider buying a 3D TV.
Dimming issues were taken care of a year ago with LCD LED TVs by Samsung and Sony. The Sony Bravia automatically adjusts to the room light source and the colors/brightness of the TV do as well. It’s absolutely astounding and I was a complete skeptic at first.
As for the “mindless” entertainment comment from another poster… I have to laugh. Yes, educational documentaries showing you things you would never see otherwise is “mindless” while I guess some sort of Paris Hilton reality show in 3D is for the highly educated.
