Original Private Practice cast member Audra McDonald will be leaving the Grey’s Anatomy spinoff at the end of the season. According to TVLine’s Michael Ausiello who scooped the news, New York-based McDonald is exiting the show to spend more time with her family, including 10-year-old daughter Zoe, in the Big Apple. For the past 4 years, she has been bi-coastal while filming Private Practice in Los Angeles. While she won’t be a regular on the medical drama anymore, McDonald is expected to reprise her character of Naomi in guest appearances.

Hope this means she’ll be back on Broadway soon! Private Practice was a waste of this four-time Tony Award-winner’s talents. They never gave her material of any real emotional depth or soul; I stopped watching after 5 episodes.
Agreed. Big Grey’s Anatomy fan, but PP never did it for me. There’s more out there for her.
When you are a 4 times Tony winner and show runners give a major arc to that talentless hack KaDee Strickland before they give you one, you leave.
Audra has been doing this commute for four years. It was even worse when her child was six than it is now that the kid is 10, and it has been the way that 40% of her life has been. Even more if you only factor the years the child can actually remember.
Strickland is actually acting the hell out of this season 4 storyline that she’s been given. Ask me during seasons 1-3 though and I might have agreed with ‘talentless hack;’ who knew?
Looking forward to seeing Audra back on Broadway soon!
She will almsost certainly be back on Broadway. She’s such a talented singer it’s ridiculous.
When it comes to TV, she (and Kristin Chenoweth) need the right vehicle to showcase their skills.
SHe always stuck out on that showlike a sore thumb. I love her onBroadway, but she never worked in this show. Her character has no sex appeal, and everyone acts like they are in high school regarding sex and relationships.
All of Shonda Rhimes shows treat sex and love like middle school and high school. Grown men and women have crushes and get dopey around each other. It’s so strange.
I admire Ms. Rhimes success and talent I just wish the shows didn’t dwell in this area so much.
I bet Shonda is regretting recasting Merrin Dungey for her now huh?
Merrin Dungey was so much better! Shonda-and ABC execs really blew it. Audra was as interesting on that show as watching a piece of done toast.
I wish Audra McDonald the best ! She deserves a bigger career, not just on Broadway, but also in film. Audra needs that one career making film role to be on top.
Big fan of Audra…and the Tony’s really mean a lot. Gonna miss her. She’s just a really top notch actress…and incredibly hot. Very hot. She’ll be back. Too talented not to.
