EXCLUSIVE: Gerard Butler has been set to star in Mavericks, the Curtis Hanson-directed fact-based drama for Walden Media. The film is based on the true story of Santa Cruz surf phenom Jay Moriarity and his quest to ride the treacherous Northern California breaks known as Mavericks, where winter swells create waves the size of five-story buildings. Butler will play Rick “Frosty” Hesson, the mentor who trained Moriarity for over a year and forged a close relationship with the surfer in the process. Though Moriarity survived those impossible waves, he died at 22 in a diving accident. But he remains an inspiration to surfers, who coined the phrase “Live like Jay.”
Hanson, who just directed the HBO financial crisis drama Too Big To Fail, is directing a script by Kario Salem and Brandon Hooper. Hanson is searching for a young actor to play Moriarity. Butler, who recently starred for director Marc Forster in Machine Gun Preacher and the Ralph Fiennes-directed Coriolanus, will hit the surf for Mavericks after he completes Playing The Field. That Gabriele Muccino-directed film is Shampoo set in the world of pee wee soccer, where a philandering former pro soccer player tries to reunite with his family by coaching his son’s team, only to put himself in dangerous scoring position with a gaggle of beautiful soccer moms. Butler is exec producing Mavericks with Alan Siegel, and Hanson, Hooper and Jim Meenaghan are producing. Michael Bostick and Amanda Morgan Palmer are overseeing for Walden. Lakeshore Entertainment is selling foreign on the film, which will begin shooting in October. Butler’s repped by CAA and Alan Siegel Entertainment. UTA reps Hanson.

You got my 10 bucks on this one.
I’d rather see a story about Big Wave surfing, like the recent article from Vanity Fair, the Wave Maker.
Mavericks IS a big wave. Huge, nasty, utterly demanding. And you paddle into it, all by yourself.
Yes…a great read (partly) about Maverick’s: Stealing the Wave: The epic struggle between Ken Bradshaw and Mark Foo by Andy Martin
The section on Mavericks is the coolest part (IMO) of the surfing documentary Riding Giants, which covers the history of big wave surfing up til the present. This could be a really great film. Totally intrigued and think Bulter will be great!
big GB fan. glad to hear the news. glad he is not partaking in light hearted romance comedies at the moment. not that there’s anything wrong with them.
looking forward to this. : -)
Unless Jennifer Aniston’s in them, of course.
Really good script– very internal and puts you right in the water. Perfect casting for the role, IMHO.
waited sooo long for this film, butler is perfect…way to go kario, I’m so proud of you…your sis
CURTIS HANSON IS THE MAN! Surf movies are tough to pull off and seem legit so I wish the production luck!
At least one of the producers/writers on this thing better have real experience in this world. If none of you guys have experienced a 2-3 wave hold down then let me gently suggest that you may not get it right.
Confident the view in the line up will have more the tone of Big Wednesday than Blue Crush.
We can only hope–I can quote Big Wednesday from memory, in fact, I have surfed the spot that they shot for Malibu a number of times, not many people get to do that.
I could go on and on about how difficult it is to nail the surf film, suffice to say that no great surf film is about surfing. The problem is that making a movie about surfing and surfers is a lot like making a movie about drinking champagne and snorting coke at studio 54; watching it is nowhere near as fun as doing it.
I love him, ever since he played the phantom in Phantom of the Opera I have been hooked. He is so hot.
Butler doesnt like he would be comfortable in the waves of Maverick. Alot CG for this one. On the other hand Curtis Hanson looks like he could fall out of an old volkswagon van with a board and jump those suckers. Gook Luck CH
Actually, there are pics of GB in the tabloid this week surfing. Don’t know if he’s always been into that (I think so) or he’s simply practising. But the guy’s lost weight since The Bounty Hunter and is looking great.
jay was a great guy and he is missed – frosty is a legend. mixed emotions on this one – will hollywood screw up surfing yet again ? watch out for clean-up sets. i wish john milius was involved.
How the hell is Butler supposed to play a 22 year old?
Butler is not playing a 22 yr. old.. He is playing the mentor, Rick Frosty Hesson, to Jay Moriarity. Moriarity died at age 22 from a diving accident.
Sounds like a winner.great story w a excellent choice as director. Will Aslan make an appearence?
To Anglophile: GB is cast as the mentor NOT the 22 year old. Please read the entire article.
Can you read? Where does it say Butler’s character is 22? The lead character is 22…good grief.
guardedly optimistic.
hollywood always takes an overly romanticized/commercialized view of what “surfing” is. focus on the stories, not the waves. focus on the characters, not the lingo. the “surfing” is the background world the characters find themselves in, not who they are. don’t make it slick. don’t make it hip.
if you get it real, you’ll get it right.
but, nobody has gotten it real yet. so good bloody luck.
I’m with “guardedly optimistic”.
That said, I read the script and it’s the real deal… authentic to the tee. If they can pull off what’s on the written page — should be pretty epic.
What they have in their corner is Curtis Hanson — LA Confidential, Wonder Boys, 8 Mile… hard to bet against him.
Surfers should be cautiously psyched. Surfing hasn’t had a movie with a legendary filmmaker like Curtis Hanson and a story this personal to the surf world (ever). It’s about time. Cross your fingers and think like Jay.
This film is going to rock!
Finally a Surf film produced by surfers!
I can’t wait for this!!!
Ahhhh,so this is why GB has been in Hawaii…learning to ride a surfboard! He’s going to have to learn alot before October but he’ll do it, so tenacious.
You can relax the producer and writer Brandon Hooper is a life long devotee to the sea!
I surfed many breaks with him from Cal, Aust and all over Indo!
The film is in great shape with him at the helm.
Agreed that surfing films don’t translate well, and especially agree with Hammonds that the film has to be about something besides surfing. Would anyone be interested in a film about Eddie Aikau, the name behind the phrase Eddie Would Go? His life story is beautiful, tragic, and has an amazing love triangle. But, trying to pitch it, people are skeptical about another “surf film”. Thoughts?
I am excited about this for Gerry!!! He’s going to be so great in this. I really can see Zac Efron playing Jay! Both have beautiful blue eyes, and Zac is athletic and so talented. But for Gerry, he is so great at playing these real life heroes. Good for him!
Will they be shooting the film in Santa Cruz, Half Moon Bay?
I hope they film it up here!
