EXCLUSIVE: Cameron Diaz is attached to star with Colin Firth in Gambit, the Joel and Ethan Coen-scripted remake that will be directed by The Last Station’s Michael Hoffman. The 1966 original starred Michael Caine and Shirley MacLaine. Mike Lobell is producing with Crime Scene Pictures partners Adam Ripp and Rob Paris. Crime Scene is financing and FilmNation Entertainment will handle offshore sales at the European Film Market in Berlin. The film will shoot in London this May.
Firth plays a London art curator who plans to con a wealthy collector into buying a phony Monet painting. He enlists a Texas steer roper (Diaz) to pose as a woman whose grandfather liberated the painting at the end of WWII. Diaz is currently starring in The Green Hornet and recently wrapped Bad Teacher. Lobell has spent the better part of a decade trying to push this picture up the hill. Adding Diaz to the fact Gambit will be Firth’s first project since all the awards hoopla surrounding The King’s Speech, the stars have certainly aligned for Lobell and his passion project.

Hmm. She’s a strong name for sure, and overseas, but a real actress in the part would’ve been great. Rosamund Pike?
Nice choice. I also like Eva Green of Casino Royale.
Diaz is too much in the Charlie’s Angels mold. Her last movie with Cruise, Knight and Day was awful. She can’t act. This remake need sofistication.
Eva Green and Rosamund Pike to play a Texas Steer Roper? Are you people insane? Eva Green couldn’t look any less American if she tried. I think that Firth and Diaz will play well off each other.
They must be going for a much older audience.
Cameron Diaz, bleh. If the Coen Brothers were actually directing this film… she would never have been cast.
I was under the impression Cohens were directing so when I read Diaz name, I was, like, WTF? But you are on the money. They would never cast her. It`s that other director.
I’m madly in love the original film, and think this is pretty inspired casting. I can totally see Cameron pulling this off brilliantly, as it plays to her comedic strengths and charm.
She is not worthy to work with Colin Firth!
Ha Ha! What Val said!
Eye-candy for ol’ geezers but not much else.
funny thing is audiences don’t actual LIKE cameron diaz. love colin for this but seems like a total mismatch. the coens have a way of making magic with the most unlikely of people. i guess we’ll see.
While I love the Coen Bros. I am disappointed that they have chosen to do yet another remake while ignoring the wealth of great original ideas out there. With this in mind, I propose a competition in which writers can submit their original spec scripts and the Coens agree to make the winning script. Naturally, I will pay for the production with funds located inside my magic bag.
Oh no, another non-actress “actress” , a la Jennifer Anniston! There are so many wonderful, talented actresses who bring experience, intelligence, beauty (inside and out), etc. Why another blonde bubble-head (and no disrespect to blondes)? I can think of quite a few women who would be so much better than Diaz: Laura Linney immediately comes to mind! And there are many others. The Coen brothers should know better. Fargo was fabulous because of Frances McDormand!
I hope that Colin Firth does more American mainstream movies from now on.
Good for you, Adam Ripp. Good for you.
Way to go, Adam Ripp. Way to go!
Why not Amy Adams in the lead.
She can actually act?
Regarding Cameron Diaz…all we can do is hope for the best…yet, Cameron hasn’t made a decent film for years.
With all the actresses from which to choose, I hope this decision was not based on ‘appeal’. I like Cameron Diaz, but seriously, is this the best choice?
Cameron Diaz? You mean Box Office poison Cameron Diaz? I say this pic will open in 5th place and drop like a stone thereafter.
Jesus! More remakes. Enough! Come up with something original!
Is this really necessary? They can write scripts, they can find young and interesting script writers. Why do they have succubm to this Bullshit remake stuff. It is beyond them. Sure True Grit was good, but watch the Wayne one afterwards. Wasn’t bad. Been there, done that.
Come on boys do something original
Lame and lazy. These guys get degraded with every remake they do. Why go watch a copy of the original? Not that Cameron Diaz had not put me off already from watching this.
It seems like a lot of bitter or cynical people have posted about this, which is funny in and of itself. Since when is there something wrong with pulling together a top shelf cast with top shelf writers? Isn’t that what audiences want?
This is not a ‘top shelf’ cast.
It is a see-saw cast with Colin firth on the part way high in the air…and, Cameron Diaz is the part with its ass on the ground.
Maybe, the writer’s will produce the perfect script for Cameron Diaz…and, tomorrow Egypt will awake as a true democracy with responsible and caring leaders.
Yes, but it also doesn’t hurt to look on the bottom shelf, either. Some of the great actors we have today are getting dusty. You have to take everyone out for a spin, too! Not just the same ol’ same ol’, you know?
G A M B I T Will Coen fans support this snoozer? Doubtful. “Hey, Sue! You’re the cutest cheerleader in school and you know how cool I am because I turned you on X Ray Spex. Well, how ’bout us seeing a really sweet flick together called G A M B I T.” And she says: “Like I think I’m like changing high schools, dude.” Pray for the Firth Amendment.
I hear a lot of complaints about remakes, but no comments on the fact that that plot synopsis doesn’t line up with the original movie at all?
“Cameron Diaz will pose as a woman”. For the first time in her career. Ba da Boom! I’m here all night, folks.
she is a real actor…
I think Cameron Diaz is going to suprise alot of people…she’s actually quite perfect for this role. Even if the Coen’s are just writing the script I’m pretty sure they had a heavy amount of say, but not all, in who got cast in the lead roles. Really looking forward to this picture, I just wish they were also directing.
why is everyone remaking and rebooting and reliving the same stuff ? The Coen Brothers involved with 2 remakes on the trot. Doesn’t anyone have anything new to say, not even the Coens ? I’m pretty sure this is the beginning of the end of the world. ps: Ms Diaz hasn’t been hot since The Mask.
