In what is the most gruesome attack against an U.S. journalist in Egypt so far, CBS News is reporting that its chief foreign correspondent Lara Logan suffered “a brutal and sustained sexual assault and beating” on Friday, the day Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak stepped down. She was covering the festivities in Tahrir Square for a 60 Minutes story when she and her team and their security were surrounded by a mob of more than 200 people. Logan was eventually separated from her crew and was brutally assaulted before a group of women and soldiers came to her rescue. Logan, who has a 2-year-old son, was quickly flown back to the U.S. and is recovering in a hospital.
The news shows how volatile the security situation in Egypt continues to be. The U.S. networks dispatched some of its top news anchors to Cairo when the protests first started, but after several prominent TV journalists, including Anderson Cooper, Katie Couric, Christiane Amanpour and Fox News correspondent Greg Palkot, were attacked by angry mobs, most of anchors left Egypt.

Such a peaceful people…
Religion of Peace, just like all the brilliant politicians keep telling us.
Celebrate Their Diversity, and keep quiet.
Yes… let’s give them freedom and democracy… worked well in Lebanon, Gaza and Iran. They’ll be marching to liberate Quds next…
Sorry, but this could happen everywhere, and especially under these circumstances. Making it something general against egyptians is racism
I don’t believe anyone was trying to put this off on Egyptians in general, but brutality against women is commonplace in Muslim society around the world, including in the United States where “Moderate” Muslims are killing women in their own family and outside their families for the sake of their nonexistent Family Honor, one of whom was lauded by the mainstream media of which he was a part ended up decapitating his wife. Racism? This is not about the color of someones skin or the accent with which they talk, it is about the purely evil religious Ideology which Islam is and it’s followers attempts to force its practice around the world.
Just terrible. However much I piss and moan about some things here in the U.S., it makes me realize how fortunate I am to live here. Freedom of speech/freedom of the press is so precious.
This will cause the networks and cable to think twice, three times before sending their newspeople to these uprisings and riotous places. It’s better to use the local news people, the Egyptian journalists or Al Jazeera. I’m sure she’s having a hard time getting over this.
Absolutely unacceptable and beyond horrific. That poor woman, it’s disgusting beyond words. While situations such as these are extremely volatile and thus carry a large amount of assumed risk for the reporters (who know what they are getting into), actions like these should never happen. Shame on the men that did this to her, shame shame shame shame on them. Whether it’s in Egypt or the United States or the UK or wherever, men like the ones who attacked Lara need to learn that sexual assault is not abhorrent and completely uncivilized.
I meant to say “is abhorrent”, not “is not abhorrent.” Typo on my end.
The article doesn’t say anything about it just being men who assaulted her.You kinda just made that assumption.
Yeah, what a silly assumption. Women gang-rape each other in public all the time.
Dimwit.
You gotta be shittin’ me.
Really? Don’t you realize how much sexual violence women in those countries are subjected to? Clearly not. Moron.
She placed herself in a position of risk. Why is everyone so shocked and surprised? As the mother of a two year old, shame on HER for going to a volatile area. I would never consent to my wife/partner travelling to Egypt if we had young children. She was unbelievably selfish, she valued her career over family.
WTF us wrong with you! If it was a husband and father that was raped you’d be singing a different song.
You’re an asshole. First of all people would never say that to a man. And she’s a journalist that’s her job, she’s been in Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan etc.. so obviously she’s not ignorant on how to handle herself in these places.
Suppose I’ll be the first to label you a despicable asshole. Now off you go.
Are you saying she was asking for it? If so, shame on YOU for lacking even a modicum of compassion for a woman who just went through probably the most horrific even of her life.
Male, female, reporter, civilian, military, Egyptian or American, no one should have to experience trauma like that.
shame on you for further victimizing the victim. journalists run risks similar to the military in these situations and there are the thorny issues of putting females in combat and combat-like zones because they are much more vulnerable to sexual violence. that is never ever to say she had it coming.
she was doing her job, sent there on assignment…you’re an idiot.
Yes, god forbid she want a career AND family.
impossible. back to the kitchen with her!
God, I hope you don’t have daughters.
You are absolutely correct. How selfish. The only people who are up in arms about your comment are those who chose their career over their families and are having regrets. Fact: you can never obtain those years back!! Stay your a s s at home and raise your kids instead of spending money on possessions to occupy their time.
How do you expect to provide for your kids without a career?
I was wondering who would be the first to blame a woman for being raped.
Congratulations! You win the prize.
Wow. Alot of knee jerk reaction to someone pointing out that she put her career in front of her family. The birkenstock crowd is out of control here. The fact is, she DID put herself in harm’s way. It’s not right what happened to her, but she probably had a pretty good idea of the risk. When she walked out to a mob during a revolution, she put herself, the story and her career before everything else. It was part of the job description.
@ SC –
Sir –
Another human being (gender irrelevant) is subjected to this kind of torment, and your gut response is to climb up on your soap box with your bigoted opinions. I pity you. Your wife and children, I pity more.
All the best wishes for Lara’s recovery.
While I agree that she should never have put herself into that position, I believe that she believed it could never happen to her. Over her years as a reporter in some of the most hostile areas of the world I can understand how she could come to believe this. My question is where was the security, not the security on the ground (although that question needs to be asked too) but the security advisers to the news crew who’s job it should be to decide weather something is too dangerous or not.
And, of course, Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter will “joke” about how she deserves it… just like they did last week.
I listen to Rush every day, what was the joke and when was it? I don’t remember a joke, or are you full of shit?
You listen to Rush everyday? sucks to be you.
Your wit is paralyzing, bucko.
I did love it recently when some caller schooled him on Reagan, most assuredly so!
Rush stated that he had no sympathy whatsoever for reporters attacked while covering the Eygpt story… then a couple of hours later, when FOX reporters were attacked, he CLAIMED he was just joking and was really concerned,[ because of course his opinion always changes depending on whether you're a right-winger or not.]
Coulter was at CPAC this weekend, and said (to the cheers of the crowd) that she wished MORE journalists had been mistreated.
Of course, I concede that these aren’t really “jokes” as humans percieve them- but apparently, it’s what they think their audience wants to hear.
CST, really??? Where are those quotes from Rush and Ann Coulter? Because everytime someone like you makes a statement like that, it just so happens that the words are taken entirely out of context.
Propaganda, anyone?
Such will be the fate of any uncovered woman in Obama’s idyllic, “free” Egypt.
You are first, an ignorant bird brain. Women do go uncovered in Egypt…and what the hell does Obama have to do with it? Are you that intolerant that you only see things from a right/left perspective? is there nothing more that life offers you?
Are you that intolerant that you only see things from a right/left perspective? is there nothing more that life offers you?
Are those serious questions? I mean, you did read his post.
absolutely horrified, sickened.. really awful. thoughts and prayers to her and her family.
Or she valued the need for an informed global citizenry over her own safety.
What would be selfish would be to consider one’s self or family above the greater good.
You do realize that posing in a crowd makes for great video but doesn’t do a thing to inform anyone about anything … don’t you?
Anyway, what a surprise, the Islamists raped the women and Anderson Cooper. Who would have guessed?
Seriously? First of all, being a news correspondent means the NEWS organizations send you where they want you to be, second of all, she was covering the FESTIVITIES, so people assumed it would be safer than it had been, and lastly but most importantly, you’re a disgusting pig of the same ilk who claim that it’s THE WOMAN’s fault when she gets raped or sexually assaulted, that “she was asking for it”. How ridiculous does your reasoning have to be when you’re blaming a woman for being sexually assaulted, no matter the situation. Did you even read the article? The mob broke through SECURITY. Lara and her crew were taking a number precautions, they (no one really) could have anticipated what happened anyway.
You fail to note a blond, blue-eyed, uncovered American woman placed herself into the middle of a bunch of fired-up Moslems, not a Macy’s parade. Don’t self-righteously pretend to be surprised; that’s what leftists do.
First, Lara Logan is South African. Second, the accepted nomenclature is *Muslims.* Third, women go uncovered in Egypt. Fourth, demonizing Islam is SO last century. Fifth, there are about a thousand varieties of “leftists” and you need to be more specific.
Even if you are a troll, this is just sad.
What is sad is your world view. So last century? Was it not THIS century that a “moderate” Muslim beheaded his wife and another ran his daughter, and her boyfriend’s mother down right here in the US? Was it last century where a woman peacefully protesting in Iran was gunned down in the street? I was unaware that they had cellphones and mini digital video cameras to capture the stoning and dismembering handed down by Shariah courts in places like Pakistan, Iran, Afghanistan, Syria, Somalia, etc… Islamic nations in eastern Africa are practicing slavery TODAY! My advice to you? Grow up, open your eyes and see the world as it really is not how you wish it to be.
Because a News Agency sends a reporter to cover a riotous mob doesn’t mean the reporter must go rub elbows with said mob. Festivities in Egypt and many other middle east countries involves behavior more akin to the post Rodney King riots in L.A. complete with celebratory gunfire. As far as Security goes, if she had any kind of competent “Security” she wouldn’t have been down there in the first place but would have covered the story from a nearby safe position. She made a mistake and paid an overwhelmingly horrible price for that mistake. Anyone who called themselves security for her have no idea what the term SECURITY means.
Crazy that some on the right are saying she was asking for this.
Wow.
Crazy that some on the left assume that everyone implying that she deserved it is on the right. How did you deduce political party affiliation from those comments?
Wow yo’ muthafreakin’ self.
Queen B- why are you so angry? why do you jump into the political fray only attacking other writers without offering insight into the main story: that a journalist was attacked during a period of seeming stability. Focus on your anger and why you need to blame others first before you write another word that is so hateful. We are lucky to have people who want to cover the news so that we can watch it from the comfort of our homes. This journalist so believes in finding the truth in life and in world conflicts that she was willing to state, for public record, that she had been sexually assaulted knowing full well how that statement would lead to political biased tirades like yours. She is a brave person. That is very difficult. Why are you such an angry one? How easy is that?
Well it was witnessed by over 200 people, not to mention the rest of the news crew and security detail. I’m betting CBS put out the press release as a preemptive measure to prevent exploitation of the story by third parties. They released a statement and then closed it off to further questions, thus highly discouraging anyone (tabloids or otherwise) from hounding Lara or her family.
With all due respect to Ms. Logan, something about this story doesn’t pass the smell test. Most sexual assault victims don’t put out a press release.
perhaps when the victim is a journalist dedicated to uncovering the truth, she fought the natural inclination of sex crime victims to hide the crime out of shame and fear of humiliation to tell the truth. she should be commended for her courage not scrutinized like lindsey lohan tweet about not stealing.

The word is that someone else was going to break the story first, so CBS rushed a press release to avoid a feeding frenzy. That’s why it took four days to get out. It’s not an easy story to keep a lid on.
BTW, your implication that she allowed herself to be gang-raped as a career move reveals more about you than it does about her.
Most sexual assault victims aren’t reporters who are sexually assaulted while covering revolutions in foreign countries. If you read the press release that CBS put out, the sexual assault part is buried underneath discussion of her being beaten.
I agree with Skeptical. There is no conceivable reason for CBS to release the sexual aspect of the assault. She is first and foremost a CBS employee and, having worked as an attorney, I have never heard of an employer issuing a “press releass” (???) about an employee having been sexually assaulted on the job. Privacy issues, professional courtesy and commmon sense would all dictate against doing so.
It would have been sufficient to simply state that she was assaulted by an angry mob. If there were follow-up questions about he nature of the assault, the APPROPRIATE response would have been: “As a valued member of the CBS family, we respect the privacy of Ms. Logan and her loved ones at this difficult time and ask that the public do so as well. For that reason we will issue no statement of specifics, other than to acknowledge that she suffered an unprovoked and indefensible assault while in the performance of her dutis for CBS.” See how easy that was. Or was the real goal to engender greater sympathy (and consequently more star power) for her, and a brighter spotlight for the network? I am not accusing, merely asking a rather logical question.
Are you saying that victims of sexual assault should be ashamed of what was done to them?
Do you really believe she allowed CBS to go public and state that the brutal assault also included sexual assault was a grab for sympathy?
Okay to talk about the beating part of it but the sexual assault should be her secret shame?
I think that disgusting attitude is part of the reason there aren’t more serious efforts made to condemn the world-wide problem of sexual violence against women
I thought she’d have security or her crew would have kept better tabs on her. Or in the midst of the celebration did they let their guard down feeling the worst was over?
Hope this doesn’t discourage her in the future.
she was asking for it. nuff said.
Lara should have been fired from CBS News six months ago when Rolling Stone published that article about General McChrystal and how he wasn’t following orders in Afghanistan and was acting like a rogue general, it was Pulitzer Prize worthy journalism it made huge waves all the way up to Obama who had to fire the general.
Lara Logan criticized, wait for it, not the general but the reporter who wrote that amazing article! She didn’t approve of it. She said it was not appropriate reporting because he didn’t clear the quotes he got on tape with the Pentagon censor!
Lara thought it was just terrible and awful to accurately quote what the general and his officers really thought about Obama and Biden and the whole misguided mission in Afghanistan. Ms. Logan thought it broke some imaginary rules that she plays by.
She said the Rolling Stone writer should have never written such a devastating article she said it was bad for America and that Rolling Stone never should have published it. This makes me wonder what real news she’s chosen to censor from her CBS viewers.
Te reality is she’s a two-faced bitch who should have been fired and replaced by the Rolling Stone correspondent he’s a freelancer his article was in the Lady Gaga with a machine gun on the cover issue. Because of how disgraceful Lara behaved last summer I can’t feel much sympathy for her now.
Yes it’s terrible that she was raped but she did everything in her power to rape the reputation of a much better foreign correspondent than she will ever be. The guy who wrote the bombshell article for Rolling Stone should have been hired by CBS News to replace Ms. Logan.
so you think violating professional courtesy is akin to be brutally beaten and sexually assaulted, karma’s a bitch. that is the equivalent of shooting point blank someone who cut in front of you in line. everyone is entitled to their opinion, but no one deserves to be rape and assaulted.
No she doesn’t deserve to be raped she deserved to be fired last summer for her stupidity and hypocrisy. Nobody deserves to be raped except for rapists when they go to prison they in turn get raped. Here’s something you might not be aware of:
Lara Logan has risen rapidly up the ladder at CBS using her south african sex appeal she’s very flirtatious and has used it to her advantage. Her good looks got her where she wanted to be. There are many much better foreign correspondents who don’t have her sex appeal. Or are you not aware that good looks are important for women on TV?
But when there was real news from Afghanistan important hard news about the commanding general going rogue and not following orders and trashing the president and vice president Lara got scooped by some newbie nobody reporter from Rolling Stone and all Lara could do was bad mouth the guy instead of praise him. That makes her a bitch. It doesn’t mean she deserved to be raped by a crowd of rioters.
Yeah, I guess she got what she deserved then, right? I hope no one ever thinks you deserve a similar comeuppance.
If there were such a thing as karma, you would have been struck by lightning by now.
Hey Karma, the first thing you learn in Journalism 101 is about ethics – remember that word? Lara was right in criticizing that reporter, because obviously he either flunked the Ethics part or didn’t go to college at all. And calling her names after what happened to her is just the lowest of the low. Are you that sick??
That two year-old was conceived with a man who was married to another woman at the time. Laura Logan was fully aware of that.
What happened to her in Egypt is wrong and illegal, and the perpetrators deserve to be fully punished.
But…
There is no But… Two completely separate things.
But what? Finish your thought … go ahead.
how horrifying to have this happen to Lara who was doing her job there. hopefully the ones who did it will soon face justice.
Bomb them. Today.
Hey, where’s the condemnation of CBS, for sending her there clearly without appropriate security?
Whether male or female, expect to be assaulted in a backwards uncivilized country that has been held back for decades.
It’s a sad and disgusting truth — and it will get worse before it gets better.
Any network and newsperson should be held responsible, it’s a hellhole and there is no guarantee that any outsider will survive.
She didn’t deserve her abuse, but she shouldn’t be surprised she received abuse.
and the US is civilized? Yeah right, a country that allows to men to poke each other in the a s s and two women….. A country that hates their President because he is half black. A country that was built on lies and thievery (and still) is. Civilized, I say an abomination. The USA has an expiration date.
I doubt the women similarly assaulted a few years back at NYC’s Puerto Rico Day parade expected to be assaulted or weren’t “surprised” that they were victimized in broad daylight in a large crowd.
Violence against women is a world-wide problem (rape as a common weapon in wars)
From all accounts, she walked into what was supposed to be a happy celebration — with a full security contingent. Perhaps it’s not what you meant, but your comment that “she shouldn’t be surprised” reads to me like “it was her own fault.”
I am sick to my stomach, poor Lara! I’ve always been so impressed with her reporting, always from the most dangerous places, putting herself in harms way to let the American people see what is really happening. Sexually assaulted and beaten, how horrible. My prayers are with you, Lara.
Sorry. What is she doing there in the first place?
Now she can cash in.
Bye-bye.
Your moral compass is broken. Your sense of empathy is a shriveled husk. Just in these few words, I can hear something hollow and profoundly malformed in you. If you read this, you will laugh. And I pity you for it because you’ll never know better.
Angelina Jolie just announced she is directing and starring in the Lara Logan bio pic due out in time for Christmas. She promises to fight the NC17 rating saying that the twenty four and half minute graphic portrayal of Lara’s sexual assault is essential to the story of a mother’s desperate attempt to reunite with her son back home.
How terrible to hear this news about Lara Logan, a terrific network reporter on par with NBC’s Richard Engel in terms of doggedness, smarts and interviewing prowess.
I will keep Ms. Logan in my thoughts and prayers and hope for healing and closure, though I know no one truly gets closure from something as horrific and malevolent as this attack was. We can only hope the bastards who did this will get theirs in the end. God knows if they are willing to do this to a news reporter just doing her job what will they do to a foreign college student visiting their country? Or a traveling businesswoman? Sometimes my fellow members of the male gender sicken me in the way they treat women.
It doesn’t matter what she was doing there, or why she was there, or what her professional or personal ethics are. What happened to this woman is reprehensible and she is in a position to say and do something about it – something most rape victims don’t have and never will have.
When you forget the fact that she was RAPED to score cheap political points (on a website dedicated to the bleedy *entertainment industry* for chrissakes), sorry but there’s just something wrong with your empathy chip and you need to go back to the factory to get that fixed.
this is horrible
I predict that in Egypt this is being blamed on Israelis or Americans
