Thirteen years after Christine Lahti won an Emmy for Chicago Hope, she is back at CBS as the star of another medical drama. Lahti is set to topline CBS’ medical-family drama pilot The Doctor, written by Privileged creator Rina Mimoun and directed by David Nutter. The project, from Warner Bros. TV, centers on a mother (Lahti) who reconnects with her adult children when she joins the family medical practice. Lahti, repped by ICM and Management 360, recently recurred on NBC’s Law & Order: SVU.

Really, CBS? Why even greenlight a medical pilot. If the past few years have been any indication, it’s guaranteed fail if it gets to air.
CBS only picks the worst medical pilots to pick up. Three Rivers? Miami Trauma? They pass on the good ones. This has been true in the past. They don’t have a nose for them.
3 lbs took the cake for stupid. But this script is good. I thought it was a slam dunk until they cast Christine Lahti. She is so wrong for it now I don’t believe the show will work. Great actress but not a lead.
Good for her!!!
Just once I’d like to see an episode of a medical drama that reflects how boring modern medicine really is: “Dr. Babe argues with the billing department over the diagnostic codes for her patient, while Dr. Hunk conducts a literature search for a systematic review.”
In other words, medicine isn’t all that freakin’ interesting, and it’s long past time to come up with new professions!
Nevertheless, congratulations to the wonderful Christine Lahti.
lmao this just made my day and it’s true. But then again memeber when they tried doing that with that show about the lawyers it didn’t end very well.
She is amazing, so happy that she is BACK…fabulous seasoned actress, and grounded role-model to the young actresses who want to sustain a long career.
I feel like I’ve seen this series before, but I’ve no idea where.
A medical drama. How original!
Medical dramas are great. Better than a cop show with people killing each other. MASH, ER, House, Grey’s Anatomy…. great friggin shows. Love them. Time for a new one.
Great drama, great humor, great death or death choices.
Better than another CSI.
A drama with a female lead on CBS? Sounds like a Judging Amy in a Hospital — guaranteed low demos.
So The Good Wife is a low demo? What is your problem? Women are 51% of the poplulation and own the dial. They should have more choices. They deserve it. Nice of CBS to remember that.
CBS and Warners are ripping off their own pilot. They produced the brilliant 2009, The Eastmans, and to their discredit picked up the ghastly, 3 Rivers and that horrible Jerry Bruckheimer piece of garbage Miami Medical instead. Knowing they were dumping the better pilot. Now they are totally ripping it off!
Tassler, Roth and Rovner should know better. It’s completely obvious to managers, agents, actors. This was a well loved pilot script and finished project. Where are the lawyers? The agents? This pilot was written about in the press.
Fishy. Get the guys from CSI on this.
Sadly these places rip themselves off all the time. It is the writer/creator who is left with nothing. Unless they are a powerful writer with an overall deal at the studio. Not many of those left. They’re the only creators who don’t get their former original material recycled and turned into new ideas for new writers.
But a medical show about a family of doctors. When was that last done? Two seasons ago. Different studio? Different network?
Nope exactly the same team. Hmmm. Get the guys from CSI on this.
The guy from CSI need to investigate Tassler for her continual lying with a smile. Anyone see the brilliant parody of her on EPISODES?
They have her down to a science!
So someone at CBS decided to make “The Eastmans” without the dad. Convinced WB to try again and said to WB this time we won’t screw it up on our end by not picking it up. WB went to a different writer to make it look fresh and like it was her original idea. Isn’t Rina Mimoun known for all her medicial writing? Not.
It’s only been two years since the last pilot. I repped several actors in the original. It’s hard to be shocked by these cretins sometimes but I can say today I genuinely am. Who are Mimouns agent?
Who are the agents of the original write? Do they know they’re being totally ripped off?
Gotta be Tassler’s idea. She’s the most unethical (as if there were ethics in this biz), the most two-faced, lying development lackey in town. And THAT is saying something.
Love Christine Lahti. But another doctor show? Why?????
Has anyone actually read the pilot? The Eastmans didn’t invent the family medical drama, nor was it God’s gift to family medical dramas — though it’s probably hard to admit that when you “repped several actors in the original”– and either way, it ripped off Brothers & Sisters more than this rips off anything. Maybe it will do well and maybe it won’t, but relax with the artistic outrage already. Welcome to TV.
Loved that pilot. Sutherland was classic. Gaby Hoffman was a find. Saffron Burrows was heartbreaking.
Eastmans felt wholly original to me and special. In the writing and the actual execution. Had style. Jason Ensler directed it to perfection.
Providence, MASH, ER, House, Private Practive, Grey’s Anatomy…
Medical Dramas can be cool.
How convenient that Christine was killed off in last night’s L&O: SVU. She really gave it a shot in the arm when she was on. It’s a little long in the tooth, IMHO. Maybe Sharon Stone could come back for another arc. That said, I’m looking forward to the return of L&O:CI and miss the mothership every week.
Anyway, good luck to Christine in a CBS medical drama. They haven’t had a successful one since Chicago Hope, I believe.
Well, I loved her on Jack & Bobby. So if this gets picked up I’ll give it a chance.
Really? Nina Tassler is “the most unethical (as if there were ethics in this biz), the most two-faced, lying development lackey in town?” I mean, you can’t get (or keep) that job without a few bodies along the side of the road. But I’ve been dealing with Nina for 10 years and she’s a total pro in my book.
In my opinion Christine Lahti is the most unlikeable actress in town. Met her a dozen times-she’s cold and shrill-and it comes across on screen. Makes Marcia Gay Harden look like Doris Day.
A few bodies? That’s some rationalization. Watch “Episodes” on Showtime. They are doing a dead on Nina Tassler character that is hilarious and scary. The President of the Network is a combo of Peter Roth and Les Moonves.
Christine Lahti is a scary person but a spectacular actress. Her work in Running On Empty, Jack and Bobby, Chicago Hope… was all superlative.
Her character on SVU was one of the most, if not THE most unlikeable ever. I was thrilled to see her get killed off last night. I know Lahti’s rep is one of being a good, serviceable actor, but I also saw her in ‘Love, Loss And What I Wore’ and I roundly disliked her in that, as well.
Don’t think it’s the roles she plays, the direction she gets or the writing. Think it’s her.
Thoroughly unpleasant human being and it comes through the screen.
Thankfully, “The Doctor” fills a void.
Not enough TV shows about doctors and their wonderful lives.
Add in some “family” drama, and “The Doctor” will cure ratings.
Why do people watch crap about doctors anyway?
If you think Nina Tassler is as vapid and dim as the girl on Episodes, you have literally never worked with her. She was hands down the best drama development exec in the business until she got the top job at CBS.
You’re an idiot.
“She was hands down the best drama development exec in the business until she got the top job at CBS.”
Dear Really,
Do you understand what you just wrote?
