I’m hearing that How I Met Your Mother star Cobie Smulders has emerged as the front runner for the role of SHIELD Agent Maria Hill in the Joss Whedon-directed The Avengers and that a deal could be done before the weekend is out. The role has been the subject of high speculation since Samuel L. Jackson gave it up in an interview with Jimmy Fallon that he would be reading as Nick Fury alongside five actresses vying for an unidentified female sidekick role. That audition happened yesterday. Reports had V’s Morena Baccarin, Jessica Lucas and Mary Elizabeth Winstead as other candidates.
Smulders wasn’t completely unknown to Whedon. In fact, he liked her as a candidate for Wonder Woman when he was working on that superhero film. Deadline has learned that the role is Maria Hill, who in the comics was the ruthless interim executive director of SHIELD, who was not above blackmailing and bullying superheros to get her way. She was eventually supplanted in that top job by Tony Stark aka Iron Man. As with all Marvel movies, the deal comes with a pile of options for appearances in future superhero films. She’s repped by UTA and Roar. Marvel Studios starts production in April, which presumably falls into Smulders’ TV hiatus on the CBS sitcom.
The Avengers will be released by Disney May 4, 2012, and it shapes up as the equivalent of a superhero All Star game written and directed by a filmmaker beloved by the geek crowd. Robert Downey Jr brings his Iron Man character, Jeremy Renner is Hawkeye, Scarlett Johansson is Black Widow, Chris Hemsworth is Thor, Mark Ruffalo is Bruce Banner/The Hulk, and Chris Evans is Captain America. Tom Hiddleston is Loki and Clark Gregg reprises the role of SHIELD agent Phil Coulson that he played in the last Iron Man.

She will be alright…but I can’t think of a worse name for an actress….Cobie Smulders.
Can’t think of a worse name? She has a great name. I’d Smulder her Cobie anytime.
Agreed. But i am pleased that she didn’t come too Hollywood pressure and changed it.
She should change it to Cobie Smoulders, which would be apt.
Oh wow! I think her name is AWESOME!!
Excellent reporting on this (though FYI, Whedon’s actually stated that Smulders was indeed his top pick for Wonder Woman).
Say yes to Robin Sparkles! This is fantastic casting. I just wish things could’ve worked out for Ed Norton to return as Banner. Let’s go to the Mall, everyone!
Robin Sparkles FTW!
Seriously, great casting. She’s ripe for a non-comedic role.
Oh wow. You mean no Kristen Stewart or some other hack Hollywood wants to push on us??? *eye roll*
This would be an excellent choice. An actor who can act getting a role. Wow. Don’t tell the studios. They may go out and get Hayden Panatierra.
It’s a first for Joss Whedon. He’s never cast real actresses in any of his TV shows before. I think there must be some studio pressure on him this time, otherwise he’d probably have gone for the godawful Morena Baccarin again.
So much for the so-called feminist, the guy who hires female cast based entirely on their looks, regardless of their obvious complete lack of talent.
Cobie Smothers is too good for Whedon. I think this can’t be his decision.
Except he’s on record as saying Smulders was his pick for Wonder Woman, and that he’s a big fan of HIMYM. Nice try, though.
You’re argument is wrong because remember he wanted for Cobie for Wonder Woman.
Whedon has worked with incredible actresses and most certainly has not cast based on looks. You’re really, really wrong.
If I were casting an actress for a role that would require her to commit to multiple films, I certainly wouldn’t hire someone who was tied to a network TV series.I’d want someone with a more flexible schedule.
What a dumb comment. TV schedules for production are almost written in stone, and also the producers of the film would know if her schedule worked before they started making the deal with her reps. Unbelievable how many people who know NOTHING about this business like to play pretend on deadline.com.
Renner, Cobie’s show HIMYM has been confirmed in many interviews to only be lasting for 8 seasons. It’s currently on the 6th, so should she get this part, she’d film it between the 6th and 7th seasons. The Avengers film isn’t due until Summer 2012, which is the gap between the 7th and final 8th season. I’m positive her sitcom schedule could be fitted around filming any Avengers sequels. After all, it’s not like Jason Segel, Alyson Hannigan, Neil Patrick Harris or Josh Radnor haven’t got filming commitments as side projects to their show.
And as everyone else has said, Cobie would be an excellent choice for this role and I’ve got my fingers crossed she gets it. Best of luck to her from HIMYM fans all over the world.
See, I disagree that she’d be excellent for the role.Anyone who has read Marvel Comics knows Maria Hill is a tough, authoritative woman who doesn’t take $*it from anyone. She’s supposed to stand side-by-side with SLJ’s Nick Fury, as well as the likes of Robert Downey, Jr, Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth.I like the actress, but I don’t see her being able to pull that off.
No matter how flexible her schedule is, she is still shooting a sitcom in L.A., starting in July, while The Avengers is filming from April-September in New Mexico, Michigan and New York. And she will presumably appear in several other Marvel films in the future. If her show is going on for 2 more seasons, she is still tied to filming it until March/April 2013.
I still say why get an actress whose schedule you have to work around, if she isn’t a “name”?
Yes, those other actors do have commitments to other projects, but they sign on to them one at a time, and those projects they chose probably work with their schedule. She’s signing on as Nick Fury’s right hand, which is an instant commitment to multiple films that she has no idea when they will be filming.
But I hope it works out.
Bobby – relax! Someone was making an innocent comment. No reason to go into attack mode. And don’t try to be Mr. Hollywood because something tells me that you are a wanna-be who is failing.
You tell ‘em, Jackie.
Except it is very likely that the show she’s on will only have one more season.
Her network TV series is already planned out, How I Met Your Mother is finally coming to an end (I forgot the date). The TV show isn’t like other TV shows where they might add a few more episodes (or cut; i.e. Chase). The HIMYM story arch is complete and allows Cobie to plan ahead.
Ethan, according to Jason Segel’s recent GQ interview, HIMYM is scheduled to go for 8 seasons and would finish in May 2013, although filming would wrap in late March/early April 2013.
Eight seasons!? Wow… I had no idea, I stopped watching after season 2 when I realize that all the episodes had nothing to do with the premise (How I met your mother). All the episodes have nothing to do with the “mother.” Probably the last season will; I wonder if they’ll do a recap leading to the last season like Lost?
Wait, you stopped watching the show because the title didn’t line up with the plot line? That’s the worst reason to stop watching a show I’ve ever heard. Oh well, it’s your loss cuz it’s one of the funniest shows on TV (although it is going downhill a little bit)
Sam, couldn’t agree with you more — on all points. Very funny show, maybe showing its age a bit. Regardless, its a perfect “post-Friends” doing a great job of showing 30-something singles and married folks as friends. It’s also one of the better depictions of New York City — even showing a few more people of color than “Friends” did in its entire run!
Good for cobie! She is so underrated on how i met your mother!
Great Actress! Great Person! Great Choice! Refreshingly wise thinking, I’m very excited for this film. Me thinks Joss Whedon knows what he is doing. Geeks (myself included) rejoice!!!
Cobie Smulders is incredibly gorgeous. Canadian perfection doesn’t get much purer than her but we should expect one of the following rising young actresses to play the female sidekick:
Mischa Barton, Rachel Bilson, Sophia Bush, Hilary Duff, Leighton Meester, Ellen Page, Emma Roberts, Jessica Szohr, Evan Rachel Wood.
I hope this movie will include Ant-Man and Wasp as well as some of the following villains:
Baron Zemo, Collector, Count Nefaria, Egghead, Grandmaster, Graviton, Grim Reaper, Immortus, Kang, Korvac, Legion of the Unliving, Lethal Legion, Loki, Master Pandemonium, Masters of Evil, Morgan le Fay, Nebula, Space Phantom. Super-Adaptoid, Supreme Intelligence, Squadron Sinister, Taskmaster, Thanos, Ultron, Zodiac.
Mischa Barton? Rachel Bilson? Sophia Bush? Hilary Duff? Are you high? Mischa Barton’s career is pretty much over. Rachel Bilson will get some guest spots on a tv show, and maybe a new pilot AT BEST. Every new season of One Tree Hill is another 12 feet deeper into the grave that is Sophia Bush’s career. And who is Hilary Duff again…? Didn’t she and Lindsay Lohan (who is a WHOLE other rant) have this feud one time? Is that why she’s famous? It can’t be because of her acting or music… or her Stuff by Duff?
Meester, Page and Roberts are all pretty decent and if they make the right choices, will have nice careers. Szohr is still up in the air. Her biggest movie was Piranha, which as much fun as it was, isn’t helping her any. Evan Rachel Wood has already made it and isn’t really a raising actress… She’s done tons of critically acclaimed work and has a recurring role on True Blood.
Sorry for ranting.. just, the first four names you dropped baffled me.
lol she did that Stuff line when she was still with disney.
I think Hilary has the perfect career -I wish they would pay me big bucks to go to Paris to promote a young adult series. She has the good life and is probably happy because she’s never been attention hungry like a lot of the other stars & she’s married and happy with the quiet life. People love her to buy books …hell whren did these kids this generation read? Apparently it became a best seller. you know they bought it because it’s her. Rach, I think is more into her personal life and relationships. She seems more than happy with playing the same roles. Mischa has mental issues in my opinion and has shitty parents. She’ll stick with fashion.
I will grant admiration for how much work you put into this schtick, but it needs to end, pal.
It’s well past the point of being funny, or even being annoying… now it’s just sad.
Sorry, but a mediocre, boring actress on a terrible mainstream network sitcom up for a role in Avengers? That isn’t giving me a whole lot of hope for this film. Pray that if she is cast, her role is terrifically short.
Get your head out of your ass. You’re an idiot.
Agreed @firebrand. And all the pr comments are tedious.
I like Winstead, but she didn’t seem right for this role. Maybe Smulders is the best they could come up with?
How I met your mother will prob be ending after another season or two. Jason segel has already said that next year (season 7) will be his last on the show, and without Marshall there isn’t much of a show.
Js, in that GQ interview, Jason Segel said that although he was contracted for 7 seasons he did sign an extension for an 8th season – as did the other 4 leads. The interview is still on the GQ website.
We’ll have plenty to dish when they start filming in a few weeks on our lot at Albuquerque Studios!
Quite possibly the worst actress making at least $2.2 million/year
Excellent choice. Cobie is gifted & hotter than hell. I feel sort of bad for all the ignorant hate towards her on here. Obviously those haters like to play Hollywood insider from the basement of their mom ‘s house and have absolutely no clue.
What’s ignorant about being honest? She sucks. This is partially masked by the fact that she stars on a terrible yet very popular show. I’m sure she’s a great person to get to know, but sorry – she blows, her show blows, and if she’s in this movie, IT will blow.
Cobie is an incredibly nice person, has clearly worked hard to become a really reliably funny presence on How I Met Your Mother, and is really gorgeous. She’s overdue to make a mark on the big screen. Good for her.
I can’t think of a person who deserves this more! Go get em Cobie!
Josh Whedon is talented and one of the few directors who know how to write for and direct female characters. The only flaw is that Whedon has a poor track record and got this job because of who he knows not that he can deliver.
The deals are already done — this was a test with all the deals pre-negotiated. The studio just needs to decide whose option to exercise.
Good for her profile, but this film will be a disaster. Too many characters and too many egos on set.
Too many egos just like in the comic book. They will fight for control and give orders until they can form a team.
As a HIMYM fan from the start, it’s great to see Smulders finally getting a solid big-screen role. If there are any appropriate female parts left to cast, Whedon should hire his BUFFY star Alyson Hannigan for a part and make THE AVENGERS a HIMYM reunion!
The choice is….wait for it….Awesome!! LET’S GO TO THE MALL!!
Or build “Sandcastles In The Sand”.
I think you mean LEGEN…wait for it…DARY
I was surprised (in a good way) at this casting decision. Cobie is an amazing actress who will be perfect for the part. I’m so happy for her!
I’m so glad she’s in the movie – - but I was really hoping the character would be Janet van Dyne (the Wasp), Carol Danvers (Ms. Marvel), or Bobbi Morse (Mockingbird).
I can’t wait util all these superheroes films crash and burn and audiences (and studios) are forced into watching, and buying, worthy properties again.
We live in dark times friends…
So do the hack execs.
… he says as if Fox or Sony wouldn’t sink that excess Comic movie money into anything other than “Big Momma 4″ or more God-awful Adam Sandler movies.
And as if MARVEL ^%&*-ing STUDIOS is really passing over dramas about the Royal Family or something to make the movies that they were literally formed to make.
But no, he’s right… the less than ten comic book movies that come out in a year are taking valuable production money from the rest of cinema… why last year alone, only 876 non-comic book films came out!
You mean more boring and depressing movies that win the Oscars and few normal people want to see.
This movie is setting itself up to be the Second Coming of the Legends of the Superheroes (now available from Warner Archives). Throw a bunch of actors on the screen for 2 hours and eventually we get that big question – whose movie is this?
