Kevin Hart is set to star opposite Rob Corddry in Rob Thomas’ single-camera comedy pilot for Fox Little in Common. The WBTV-produced pilot is about 3 families united through their kids’ little league sports. It centers on the Wellers (Corddry, Paula Marshall) who move from San Jose, CA to Austin, TX, but find that their adjustment won’t be quite that easy, considering that their Latino neighbors, the Pachecos, have a radically different approach to child-rearing than they do, while their other new neighborhood acquaintances, the African American Burlesons, take sports very seriously. Hart will play Ty Burleson, a former Division 2 athlete and sports writer-turned-house husband who now satisfies his competitive urges by coaching youth baseball.
Kevin Hart, now on tour with his standup show Laugh at My Pain, just wrapped up a 2-day performance at the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live that set a record with $1.1 million in ticket sales. No African American comedian since Eddie Murphy has surpassed 1 million dollars in two-day live show ticket sales. The Nokia shows, which Hart co-directed, were filmed for a theatrical release. The concert film, also titled Laugh at My Pain, is being produced by Codeblack Entertainment, Hart’s HartBeat Prods. and exec produced by 3 Arts’ Dave Becky. Vivendi/Universal is distributing. Hart, repped by 3 Arts, UTA and APA, has sold over 350,000 DVDs of his most recent special Seriously Funny.

This guy has the goods.
Yeah once they find the right vehicle for Hart, the sky is the limit. He’s hysterical
I still remember his little scene stealing moment in the 40 year old virgin.
Aim high Willis!
Hart is long overdue to be a huge star.
I don’t know about long overdue, but he’s definitely paid his dues in the trenches. He’s only 31, so he’s seeing success at just the right time really.
Really? In the year 2011, we need a sitcom that focuses on the differences between white, black and latino people?I mean, is this the only way you can do a show with a mixed cast? Can you not have a show with diverse characters and not point out that they’re of different ethnicities?
Renner – did you read the script? Or are you just going off the reporters description of the script. Script has less to do with them all being differnt race and ethnicity. Confused though because people get slammed when there is no diversity and people get slammed when there is. Guess it’s a no win. The one thing u can do is read a script and make your own decisions.
Your “suggestion” seems counterintuitive. By virtue of creating such a show about “diverse characters” (assuming you mean ethnically diverse) played by an ethnically diverse cast you ARE pointing out that they’re of different ethnicities.
For example, if you create a show about a white family and a Latino family, and NOT point out that they’re ethnically different, then why create the show in that fashion? i.e., why must the family be Latino in your script?
my reply was to Renner…
But to add:
What if the show happened to be played by three white families, how fun would that be? If race should not have anything to do with their characters, then the characters could technically be played by white actors. Obviously there are some humor that can be derived from cultural/ethnic differences, and that’s why shows and movies like this exist.
And the above comment is right about the show getting slammed if it had no diversity. Look at M Night’s decision to cast who he cast for the Last Airbender film: He cast for the film as if ethnicity did not matter (i.e., wasn’t crucial to the film) and look at the response he got.
I feel the show is gonna be a modern family knockoff… which isnt necessarily a bad thing
Well deserved. Not sure if it has a release date yet, but I hear he’s phenomenal in the indie Let Go opposite David Denman. Could be quite the year for him.
Read the pilot–isn’t about race at all. More about being American and how there are different ways to define that and different ways to raise good kids.
Hey, renner, don’t you know what comedy is based upon the differences in people, their conflicts, etc? But you’re right. They should just make it three white families.
Nowhere in my comment did I say it should be about 3 white families. That’s a show I definitely would not watch.
I was pointing out that we are supposed to be so progressive, yet we are still making shows that are focusing on how different we are.
Why can’t we have a show that has people of different backgrounds, but the show not be specifically about the characters being from different backgrounds.
It’s kinda like with overweight actors.Every time an overweight actor is the lead in a TV show, that series is usually based around the character being overweight. That’s usually the premise of the show. Why can’t their just be a sitcom or drama with an overweight lead and the fact that they’re overweight not be the basis of the show?
I mean, rarely any shows with white leads are about them being white, so why is every show that has a lead character from some form of minority has to be about that person’s minority?Haven’t we gotten past that?
But, Renner what you obviously didnt do from your comments is read the actual script before commenting.
Guess you don’t watch Modern Family.
I love how clueless so many posters are to their own racism. Every person here who says “if race isn’t an issue” automatically follows it up by saying it should be three white families. Why can’t it be three black families or three Latino families? The fact that you assume that if race isn’t an issue in the story it should automatically default to white people explains the lack of diverse programming on the networks. Your racism is so ingrained, so reflexive that you’re not even conscious of it. When it comes to your racism white people have psychological blind spots big enough to drive a mack truck through.
WOW… I’m not exaggerating, your comment is one of the dumbest comments I’ve ever read in my life.
You DO understand that the example of racism that you provide (that posters are racist for saying networks should cast 3 white families) is EXACTLY the point those posters are trying to make? It went completely over your head.
If you read carefully, the posters are trying to make the point that “if race is not an issue” then try to imagine if a network made a show about 3 white families — THAT would be ridiculously racist!
NO ONE is actually saying that there should be 3 white families; in fact, the posters are saying that such a show would be ridiculous.
“If race isn’t an issue” then how can you purposefully write a show or movie about, say, 3 Latino families without (perhaps unintentionally) acknowledging that race IS an issue? If you wrote a show about 3 Latino families — and it had to be 3 Latino families — then by virtue of such requirement you ARE saying their ethnicity is an issue.
blinder spots,
No one is saying there should be three white families? Go read Doug’s comment. He states it plainly. And your stupid suggestion to “try to imagine if a network made a show about three white families” is THE dumbest comment I’ve ever read. TRY to IMAGINE it?! I don’t have to “try to imagine it”. Just turn on the TV!! Watch Parenthood, Desperate Housewives, Brothers and Sisters, Blue Bloods, Perfect Couples, The Middle. And the shows about non-white families on network TV are…where? Why can they do shows about just white families and race isn’t an issue, but if it’s Latino or Black it is an issue? You are as blind as I said. People like you are so cowardly when it comes to facing racism in this industry; you refuse to even see it.
“white people have psychological blind spots big enough to drive a mack truck through.”
and that isn’t racist? talk about being clueless to your own racism.
rac·ism? ?[rey-siz-uhm] –noun
1. a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one’s own race is superior and has the right to rule others.
2. a policy, system of government, etc., based upon or fostering such a doctrine; discrimination.
3. hatred or intolerance of another race or other races.
HUMANS tend to perceive characters in books as being like themselves unless told otherwise. The reason being, we cannot experience life as anything but what we are, therefore when imagining a character, it is easiest to see them as we are. This does not just refer to race, it refers to gender and social/economic class. Therefore, it is not “hatred of another race” that causes someone to comment “what if it were three white families”, any more than it is racist for you to assume that everyone who said that is a white person. It IS racist to assume that every white person is something negative just because they are white, just as it to assume every black person is something negative because they are black.
This guy tries way too much to be like Chris Tucker, check out Soul Plane for instance. He acts just like him, that’s what brought the film down for me. I hope he got his act together?
Not at all. Chris Tucker is screechy, super-animated, and always makes crazy eyes; that’s not Kevin Hart’s style at all.
The script for Soul Plane brought the film down; no actor can shoulder the blame for that hot mess.
Kevin Hart is a hilarious stand-up and I’m interested to see him in this. Good for him.
Kevin Hart is America’s next big comedian. Surpassed Eddie Murphy this past weekend as the only urban comedian to sell more tickets for a show. Great work Kevin. TONY ROBERTS is next up!!!
I don’t know if Tony Roberts is next up, but he is hilarious. Three words for you: ” Jesus on a motorcycle.”
Kevin made more box office than Eddie Murphy. But tickets back in the day were a lot cheaper and Eddie played much bigger venues and actually sold significantly more tickets. That said, Kevin in the real deal.
Will he be as amazing in this as he was in Krod Mandoon? That is the only real question.
Good thing no one saw that Code Black production Something Like a Business. Kevin doesn’t have the best taste in projects, so we’ll see.
Something Like a Business was not a Codeblack Production. Get your facts straight. Codeblack was just the distributor. Additioanlly Kevin did the film years ago, its not a recent production.
Simple question:
Does that pic/mugshot of Hart look like a comedian to you?
Nothing remotely funny about it-or him.
Kevin Hart is beyond brilliant he deserves everything hea worked hard for GO KEVIN!
I get what you’re saying but I think at this time with the economy the way it is, for people to shell out big bucks to see this guy live speaks volumes to his star power.
Damn K Hart is hilarious. I still watch and laugh at both his other stand up specials haha cant wait for this
You don’t watch Modern Family, do you?
Well the mere fact you wrote about his performance in Soul Plane lets me know you don’t know much about anything. hahaha Just kidding. sort of. Good for Kevin Hart! Go eagles
Soul Plane was a horrible movie, but even I can tolerate it because of Kevin’s comedic presence. Dude has awesome comedic timing. He has a movie that was released last year called “Something Like A Business” its rather low budget, but his acting was hysterical. It’s not too many comedians out here that can pull off stand up AND comedic acting
Y does kevin hart tell the same jokes from the all star comedy show
Its almost as if your looking for there to be a problem based in race . 3 different cultures are represented in this situation to assume they will all act exactly the same is far fetched unless each character has the same exact background . Let’s take a walk look at real life for a second me I was born and raised in the ghetto my neighbors across the street are from the Caribbean my neighbors to the right are from central america to the right of them an affluent black family with money in the family . To my left an old white couple to there left a family from africa . Do we all have things in common ? Yeah, we live on the same street but other than that we all come from different life experiences so our views and ideals differ yet we all get along different ages races and cultures all different yet able to get along , throw in raising kids and my street is this show . Off the race topic , how is kevin Hart gonna play an ex athlete isn’t he like 5 feet tall lmao .
i love kevin hart i think this show gone be funny as hell hahaha
The last show I remember having a a cast as diverse as this one, was “For Your Love”. I really liked that show, but unfortunately, it was cancelled too soon.
