Comedy Central is adding a second sports news/commentary show. The cable network has picked up Sports Show with Norm Macdonald with an eight-episode order. The new series is slated to begin production this month and is scheduled to premiere in April. Sports Show with Norm Macdonald will feature former Weekend Update anchor Macdonald’s comedic take on topical and controversial stories from the sports world. It will be taped in front of a live studio audience and will cover all sports – from the popular to the obscure. It is not clear if this show is being eyed as a companion or alternative to Comedy Central’s Onion SportsDome, which launched last month. On the political news/commentary side, the network has two companion series, The Daily Show and The Colbert Report. Sports Show will be executive produced by Macdonald, Marc Gurvitz, Lori Jo Hoekstra and Jackhole Productions’ Daniel Kellison.

Onion Sportsdome except funny? Count me in.
Brilliant idea. Love Norm Macdonald. Surprised no one’s done this yet.
Thing is, to enjoy it you’ll need to be familiar with sports, the business of it, the personalities, and so an so forth. This would be a great show for ESPN except for the fact that they’re frightened of pissing off anybody important in the sports universe. So Comedy Central has to hope they can attract a lot of sports enthusiasts who have a sense of humor.
If it’s done well, it can be both informative and funny at the same time. The Daily Show and Colbert have a very young audience. That demo is not the most politically aware or active, but because the shows are well written they tune in and get the joke.
statistics show that the average daily show viewer is college educated, politically aware/active, etc …unlike the average Glen Beck fan..
the median age is 42 and 41. Not sure where this young audience thing comes from.
I can never get enough of Norm. I’d watch this.
Norm! I hope this works. Norm is great and this is a perfect fit.
That’s one show I’ll watch from day one!
Knowing the way Comedy Central operates, they will rotate this with the Onion Sportsdome.
And then, every season, play each show against the other to keep down production costs and licensing fees.
Bingo!
Wouldn’t having two shows in production compared to one lead to higher production costs?
I saw the live-taping of this pilot. It was the hardest I’ve laughed at a live event ever. Norm is an effing comic genius.
Great news! Love Norm. I still miss “The Norm Show.”
According to the great Don Ohlmeyer he is not funny which of course is BS
Hey lose,
Are you aware that Don Ohylmeyer is the guy who re-designed The Tonight Show with Jay Leno? And that this re-design is what allowed Jay to gain a comedy club-like accessibility to his audience and that this allowed Jay’s true talent to shine? And that without Ohlmeyer’s input Jay Leno might not even be on the air?
Employees and their families who depend on Jay are deeply greatful to Mr. Ohylmeyer for what he did. So I suggest you educate yourself before you open your effing big mouth next time, ok Craig?
Hey Monty,
Nobody gives a crap. Don Ohlmeyer is an idiot. Norm is a once in a lifetime talent and Jay is painful to watch.
Brilliant! that is all I can say. Yeah for Norm – how fun will this be and CC totally needs a show like this
I generally loathe ‘reality’ programing, but thoroughly the Soup every week; I’m completely out of touch with 80% of the sports world, but will eagerly tune in for Norm + Sports.
This is CC’s marketing/promos/press teams’ show to lose…Norm has quietly but steadily built himself great & equal credibility among high brow and caveman comedy fans. It’d be a shame for such a fun idea and superb talent to be pissed away…it’s happened before at 1515 Broadway.
Sadly, I see a lot of M.A.W.M. circle jerks on this show.
Any day with Norm McDonald in it is a good day.
What the hell is a “W.A.W.M.?”
Not sure specifically, but since the post came from Elia, you can be sure of two things. First, that W.M. stands for White Males. Second, that it is not a compliment. Keep playing that one-note horn of yours Elia!
(1) Ministry of Agriculture and Water Management
(2) Middle Aged White Men
I like Norm. I have no interest in sports – more precisely no interest in sports figures.
Norm is brilliant and not in the british way. I hope this project goes well for him. The onion news network on IFC is much funnier than the sportsdome which is a lame sportscenter take off. I always said that sportsdome would be funnier if it was actual sports stories.
Can’t wait to see the new Kellison produced show. Brilliant!
I love Norm and I loved his show in the 1990s, I think.
I Watch Soccer. Hate every other sport. Love Norm. So ill watch it and i’m sure ill laugh. You do not have to be a sports fan to understand a joke about football. It will be good.
I attended one of the pilot productions a few months ago. This show was great. It was like a half hour weekend update but with abundant cursing. They have a few animated segments and a segment with norms man on the street nerdy nephew. Norm was great and interacted with the audience mostly by poking fun at the director and the assistants for making him do things for post production (like getting him to shuffle his papers on his desk for 5 minutes)
Relax man
