Craig Zisk has served as director-executive producer on two female-centered comedy series, Showtime’s United States of Tara and Weeds. Now he is set to direct 2 comedy pilots, NBC’s Bent and the untitled Kari Lizer project, both of which are built around a central female character. Additionally, former Six Feet Under director-executive producer Alan Poul has signed on to direct ABC’s dramedy pilot presentation Good Christian Bitches.
Bent, which just tapped Amanda Peet for the lead, was written by Tad Quill. It is a single-camera romantic comedy about a recently divorced “type A” single mother (Peet) who tries hard not to fall for the sexy “surfer-dude” contractor she hires to re-do her kitchen. The Kari Lizer project, which has a cast-contingent order, is a multi-camera workplace comedy about a relationship-challenged woman who, with the help of her co-workers, guides people through unexpected career transitions and downsizings. Zisk, repped by UTA and Brillstein, is currently the only helmer besides sitcom veteran Andy Ackerman to book 2 pilots this season.
Good Christian Bitches was written by Robert Harling based on the book by Kim Gatlin. it centers on a recently divorced mother of two who, to get a fresh start, moves back to the affluent Dallas neighborhood where she grew to find herself in the whirling midst of salacious gossip, Botox, and fraud. WME-repped Poul directed the pilot for CBS’ Swingtown and served as an exec producer on the series.

So is NBC going to do with the Kari Lizer project what they did with “100 Questions,” assign a single-camera director and try to make a multi-camera show look single? Hope not.
There’s nothing wrong with a single-camera guy doing multi-cam (and I see Zisk did some multi-camera early on), but I hope they’ve learned their lesson and don’t try to act ashamed of the multi-cam form’s glorious theatrical, artificial look.
Oh, well. At least it’s not James Burrows again. That has its own problems.
As an exec at NBC in the 90′s, I’ve worked with both in multi. They are talented directors (in both formats, actually). These things are (far more often than you would suspect) decided based on the creative intent of the writer/executive producer, anyway. Place the blame where it is due.
And, I can’t resist a bit of history here — the “look” you love has, ironically, its origins in the MTM shows Mr. Burrows was directing during Grant Tinker’s reign in the 1970′s. It is, in no small part, the genius of Mr. Burrows (and of Mr. Tinker) that gave us the most glorious, theatrical pilots (and series) in television comedy history. But oh well, if you knew more about him you would know that he goes by Jimmy, not James.
Tell me GCB is set in Plano. It has to be.
Enough with the crazy chicks, Zisk! Life’s too short!
Craig Zisk is busy because he’s good. Nice to see it being recognized.
I have never seen Craig Zisk wear a scarf. It’s unsettlingly French.
Every episode of television that I have watched directed by Zisk have usually been my least favorite. Tara is a dreadful show. His early episode(s) of Nurse Jackie caused me to abort the series. His Big C was ok.
