The CW got on the board today with its first pilot orders this season. The network has picked up 4 drama pilots, including Awakening, the spec script the CW bought just last week.
CW entertainment president Dawn Ostroff had made launching medical, legal and cop franchises on the network a priority and her pilot picks reflect that. Three of the 4 pilots are procedurals – one medical (Hart of Dixie), which comes from Gossip Girl co-creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, one police drama (Cooper and Stone), and one legal (Heavenly), which has supernatural elements. Additionally, zombie drama Awakening has a legal drama element, as the central character is a public defender. Here are descriptions of the 4 CW pilots, which join legal dramedy pilot Danni Lowinski, which was ordered in October:
Awakening, written on spec by William Laurin & Glenn Davis, centers on two sisters who come of age and face off against one another amidst the beginning of a zombie uprising. In centers on the older one, who is a public defender. Reveille is co-producing the pilot with Warner Bros. TV, where the script has been laid off. Laurin, Davis, Howard T. Owens, Carolyn Bernstein and Todd Cohen are exec producing.
Hart of Dixie, from WBTV and Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage’s Fake Empire, is a comedic drama centered on a young New York City doctor who inherits a medical practice in a small Southern town inhabited by an eclectic and eccentric group of characters. Leila Gerstein penned the script and is exec producing with Schwartz, Savage and Len Goldstein. This is Fake Empire’s second pilot this afternoon, along with Georgetown at ABC.
Heavenly, written by Richard Hatem, is from CBS Studios and Fineman Entertainment. It centers on a dedicated young female attorney and a former angel, Dashiel Coffee, only recently turned human, who tackle cases together at the attorney’s legal aid clinic – she saves clients’ butts while he saves their souls. As an angel, Dash never experienced feelings or emotions, and his “awakening” is a big part of the series, sometimes to hilarious effect. Hatem and Ross Fineman are exec producing.
Cooper and Stone, from writer-exec producer Laurie Arent and CBS TV Studios, is about two smart young female detectives on Chicago’s North Side who are best friends, equally adept at discussing fashion, music, pop culture as they are solving homicides.

Fantastic. One Doc Hollywood rip-off, and one Rizzoli and Isles meets the OC.
For the love of God, shoot me now.
YUCK! These sound awful. Where’s the fun?
So we’ve got The WB’s POPULAR with a zombie twist… a tired EVERWOOD clone… another improbable concept by Richy Hatem… and Cagney and Lacey as Valley girls.
Way to give up, CW!
‘Hart of Dixie’ sounds more like a ripoff of ‘Northern Exposure’ than of ‘Everwood.’ But your point is still valid. These shows don’t sound very good at all.
shoot me next.
I thought Dawn Ostroff left the network. When will she leave? Who will replace her? I hope a media joint venture is created with Dawn Ostroff, Jeff Zucker and Ben Silverman, LOL!
They should tweek Heavenly by making it a Supernatural spinoff and having Castiel be the Angel. It would make use of Misha’s strong fanbase and give the show a bump. Unfortunately, since this is not being produced by Warner Brothers, the show would have to buy the rights to the character of Castiel, but I still think it would make a stronger show.
When they start to investigate the murder of broadcast television, the CW will join a crowded list of suspects

THE GILMORE GUMSHOES?
kdb
Stop that Kurt… You might inadvertently make it sound interesting…
Hey… they’re playing it safe right? “Same but different?”
Awakening = CW’s Answer to maybe replacing Supernatural? Right?
Hart of Dixie = CW’s sounds like a good fish out of water take ala Northern Exposure – but of course CW’s key demo won’t remember that show… or Doc Hollywood
Heavenly = Updated version of a young “Highway to Heaven”- which is funny because I was told two years ago that nobody does “angel TV shows” anymore… ha ha right…
Cooper and Stone = A ditzy version of any detective show … still trying to figure that out. But crime procedurals still tread water… so who knows.
Well, thank God the female detectives care about fashion. God knows there’s no way I could relate to women who are merely competent professionals and interesting individuals. I hope they wear spike heels to crime scenes and have a wacky fight over a designer handbag!
In less sarcastic news, I’m vaguely interested in the two paranormal-themed ones. Could be goofy, but could be interesting.
The only CW show i found interesting was the MIchelle Tranchenberg PIlot but i guess that wont come!! All of these pilots look garbage!
Order some comedies or something. Replicate ABC Family.
The CW is in the dumps. All CBS/WB care about is if there shows make money in international sales, syndication and dvds.
Ostroff’s preach on digitalizing & technology is getting old. Pretty Little Liars did better then 90210/Gossip Girl comp last night. Maybe even combined! eeeeks.
Perhaps bring Angela Bromstad in here, Ostroff has over stayed her welcome.
OMG, these are like the best shows eva!!! Like, all you haters, like, are just BIT-terrr!!!
What is wrong with Dawn Ostriff! Where is Secret Circle? The Michelle Trachenburg series or The Kevin Williamson show? She needs to be fired. She is going to bring down the network unless she picks up a few more decent pilots which may or may not help save this sinking ship called “CW.” Awakening is the only series that sounds ok. Lets boycott this women seriously! A 14 year old could do better then her. Jees!
How many white writers can you fit on one page? Jez.
Wow. These all sound horrible. Which is too bad because they had some decent stuff in development. Where is RAVEN, based on the DC Comic? Or Hawkshaw… that one sounded good. Secret Circle? The Kevin Williamson thing? Those were the projects with a lot of promise, and instead …. these all sound kinda bad. Hart of Dixie sounds okay, though I liked it better the first time when it was called Everwood.
And why is there not a Smallville spin-off in the works?
Come on now. This is a joke story, isn’t it? Isn’t it?????
WTF, are they trying to rip of Everwood?
Damn The CW sucks.
what happened to ACTING OUT?
Dawn Ostroff’s goodbye gift?
This sounds horrible!
Dawn seems to fianlly have realized that cancelling Everwood was a BAD mistake. (Like almost all of her decisions).
They could just re-air Everwood and save themselves the expense of making that stupid Hart of Dixue show.
The thing is…It is not just the CW. I was just saying last week, if I have to look at one more cop, doctor or lawyer show…Off the map, Harry’s law, etc. Broadcast is killing themselves off. The CW might as well throw in the towel now…18 and ups don’t want to see this garbage.
This is not just a Dawn Ostroff problem. This is an estrogen problem. Can the gays bring Steve McPherson back from exile already? All his hijinks pale in comparison to what Ostroff’s programming is doing to America, much less damaging the CW and potentially putting more people out of work.
McPherson, grab your nuts and get back in the game. We need you!
I have a question: Is it the final order? I man is it possible that in future days they’d order other pilots?
