Big day for casting female fairy tale villains. Famke Janssen will play the leader of the witches in the Tommy Wirkola-directed Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters at Paramount Pictures. She joins Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton as the title characters who, 15 years after their narrow fairy tale escape from the gingerbread house, become specialized bounty-hunters looking to take down the witches that almost killed them. Janssen takes the job the same day that Julia Roberts closed to play the Evil Queen in Relativity Media’s The Brothers Grimm: Snow White. Gary Sanchez is producing the witch project. Janssen just wrapped her scripting/directing debut on Bringing Up Bobby. She’s repped by CAA and Brookside Artists.

have always loved famke janssen… can’t wait to see her in this role*
Holy shit, yes.
Renner and Arterton are an odd paring.Hansel and Gretel are siblings very close in age, but those actors are 15 years apart in age, and they look it.
i LOVE Famke and this sounds like a pretty cool idea
She was brilliant on NIP/TUCK. Love love love her!
Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters? Sounds “crumby”…
Yes, I love Famke Janssen. My only wish is that she was David Janssen’s daughter.
This is so pathetic. All these really talented actresses … and what are they being offered (and taking) — playing the part of witches.
What a negation of great female talent. THIS is what the ol’ boys network running the studios has come down to… these guys are room temperature IQ’s.
You have got to be kidding me. I am so sick and tired of Actresses being criticized for taking villain roles. I actually find it refreshing that women are getting more chances to portray parts that for the most part are male dominated. I think it will be interesting to see how both Famke (who has played multiple villainesses)and Julia (who is really playing against type) do with these roles.
I agree I think its great when good Actresses take villain roles!
Ummmm… Renner is doing some corny-ass movies between this and Avengers and Mission Impossible. The need/want for giant paychecks is an ok short term strategy but it’s also blown upmin a lot of actors’ faces, including his buddy Colin Farrel’s and of course Nicolas Cage–doing certain types of cheesy movies makes it impossible for people to take you seriously again.
what type of movie is this? straight horror?, comedy-horror?
guess I’m just not seeing it – from the description it has “camp” written all over it
It’s based on a true story the Grimm fairy tales were all inspired by actual events in the middle ages, children were abducted all the time back then and they accused women of being witches and consorting with the devil.
Famke is really good at playing evil (as demonstrated in X3, Goldeneye, Taken, House on Haunted Hill). I’d kinda hoped she would nab the Evil Queen role in one of the cinderella movies though. Certainly would have been better than Julia Roberts.
I remember her from her cameo in Star Trek TNG, she was so so beautiful back then. Still is of course!
This is great, Nikki. Really love Famke Janssen. Good actress. Loved her in XMEN2, Loved TAKEN, and she rocked NipTuck. She wears a lot of hats really well. This girl should be working.
I worked with Famke & Milla Jovovich in “Bringing Up Bobby.” I was directed by Famke and played the scene with Milla as an Undercover Cop. I just wanted everyone to know they are VERY Professional. I would expect no less than a Premiere Performance from Famke. To expect less is NOT who Famke is!
