Pathé UK has released the first shot of Meryl Streep as British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Streep is in the 2nd week of filming The Iron Lady here in London. It’s the first feature from director Phyllida since she directed Streep in Mamma Mia. Jim Broadbent plays Thatcher’s husband Dennis. Damian Jones is the producer. Fox will release here in Britain through its output deal with Pathé, which is handling international sales itself. Pathé will unveil footage at Cannes. North American rights are still unsold. “I am trying to approach the role with as much zeal, fervour and attention to detail as the real Lady Thatcher possesses – I can only hope my stamina will begin to approach her own,” says Streep.

Reagan play both “good cop” and “bad cop” and knew which role was called for at critical times. Most people are pleased that he and Gorby ended the Cold War and did so without a major war or even a small one. He let Russia be Russia. The only real bad deal of that era was the break up of the former Yugoslavia and neither the USA, Russia or the European Union could have stopped that.

Superman, the “all-American hero”, is actually created by a Canadian.

It was that statement that set the stage for the future scaling down of tensions between East and West, resulting in the full scale collapse of Soviet communism and oppression. I love how all these right wing-nuts seem to have completely forgotten how Thatcher mishandled the Northern Ireland troubles, how her “tough stand” against the miners strike cost the nation a billion, and how her push for privatization was widely seen as a disaster — where poor John Major took the fall for it. And all of you wingnuts who salute Reagan for meeting with Gorbachev — Thatcher was violently against any negotiations with the Soviets.
Why not? Henry Cavill will be the new “Superman”, and Christian Bale is “Batman”, both quintessential American heroes.

I have no doubt that Meryl Streep is technically capable of playing Mrs. Thatcher with insight and depth. I share your fears that the script, and the liberal biases Streep and much of the production team have historically shared will result in a production that does us all a disservice.
Margaret Thatcher deserves thoughtful, in depth, perceptive cinematic consideration. The King’s Speech has shown how accurate historical depiction can encourage and inspire. I hope, rather than believe, this film will be such an undertaking.
