Pathé UK has released the first shot of Meryl Streep as British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Streep is in the 2nd week of filming The Iron Lady here in London. It’s the first feature from director Phyllida since she directed Streep in Mamma Mia. Jim Broadbent plays Thatcher’s husband Dennis. Damian Jones is the producer. Fox will release here in Britain through its output deal with Pathé, which is handling international sales itself. Pathé will unveil footage at Cannes. North American rights are still unsold. “I am trying to approach the role with as much zeal, fervour and attention to detail as the real Lady Thatcher possesses – I can only hope my stamina will begin to approach her own,” says Streep.

Meryl Streep looks amazing! She can transform into any character, even a real person and become them.
They couldn’t get a Brit to play this role? How fucking lame.
Given the recent casting of a certain superhero, it’s probably best to let that complaint slide.
Uh, Superman was a fictional character from the planet Krypton, so let’s let your riposte slide.
Is Abraham Lincoln a fictional character? Last I heard, Daniel Day Lewis was going to play him in Spielberg’s newest. Come to think of it, Daniel Day Lewis (English)also played an American in The Last of the Mohicans, and The Gangs of New York. But then again, these are “fictional” characters.
Uh, I think Matt is referring to Captain America.
I believe Day-Lewis is Anglo-Irish; credit where credit is due.
totally !!!
Whats wrong with you? I don’t hear complaints when its reported that a Brit will play Superman in the next movie! Thats why they are called “actors”! Because they know how to act!
Yes, but unfortunateley they never ever get the accent prefectly authentic so you are constatly aware that the brit is played by an american or conversely
Yeah, good argument because she’s so lame at accents – I mean look at how she ruined “Sofie’s Choice.”
Meryl Streep is a masterful actor. You are comparing her to the current crop of untalented, unskilled, lackluster actors (no names here) who cant pull it off properly. I think she will be amazing…my only concern is that she be portrayed accurately.
Yes! Well said.
Enough of this ‘REALITY TV’ bs that has engulfed the AV media.
Acting is just that… ACTING! This means becoming something or someone else.
Not going on and just being yourself… though good acting has an element of both.
So what you are saying is the fact that Ms Streep is probably the finest actress on the planet, and can transform herself into her screen character like no else, just doesn’t matter to you. She must be British or it is “lame”! Come now, just look at her! I thought I was looking at Mrs. Thatcher. I am curious, can you please name the British actress would you cast in this part?
I can think of a very fine actress: Jennifer Saunders
Yes, Meryl Streep is a cameleon. She is incredible at transforming herself. Though I think Hellen Mirren would have done as great a job as we saw her in The Queen. It is not because she naturally looks like Her Majesty. She also tranformed herself to fit the character.
Well done both. It is inspiring to see this.
Hey, a British dude is playing the new Superman. Let’s call it even, k?
At least she won’t whine like a Brit as you do.
Don’t be such a child.
your point is?
Henry Cavill a British actor is playing SUPERMAN, an ALL-AMERICAN HERO, in a new film. Grow up this has been going on since Movies were being made. Besides Meryl Streep may be the Greatest Actor of all time. 16 Acamedy Award Nominations makes her so. Get over yourself…..
Margaret Thatcher much like Ronald Reagan was a Fricken disaster, not only for their own Country but the World as well…..
You’re in a small minority, and it’s getting smaller every day.
‘Fricken disaster,…’? You are a fool. If it wasn’t for Reagan, Thatcher and the Pope you would be speaking Russian or living in a bomb shelter.
And just for the record, if it wasn’t for the USA you’d be speaking German. Back to your Anglo Saxon roots, and I don’t mean Hastings or Darbyshire.
Clifford,
What a stupid you are. Maggie and Ronnie virtually saved both the UK and the US. You just again prove how dumb most liberals are.
Good Day!
A disaster?? Regan and Thatcher were instrumental in ending the Cold War. They were a BLESSING to their countries and the world.
clearly you are confused. but then again, you probably think Obama is doing a fantastic job and Jimmy Carter was a fine president… which would explain things.
I can’t agree.
Right on Reagan, Pope, Thatcher. Toppled the Soviet Union. Thatcher unwittingly backed global warming scam, but we know so much more now.
Streep: If you have to make sure it’s done right, you get Streep.
And just to be fair, the British in WWII were amazingly tough and vital to beating back Hitler. I think they bombed Berlin just a tad.
God Bless.
Toe Tag here,
Just to be clearer, I do not think Ron, Mags are a disaster. The pope rocks too.
You are perhaps one of two that feel that way. Margaret Thatcher was a gutsy woman and I hope that comes through in the movie. Meryl Streep will be wonderful in this role as long as it doesn’t get too politically correct. As for Ronald Reagan. One of the best presidents the United States ever had. George Washington comes first because he helped us beat you Brits.
Baloney.
Reagan had the balls to see and call the USSR and then he had the special ability to hold the Russians’ hands while they shed the obsolete colonial empire Stalin stuck to Russia. Reagan play both “good cop” and “bad cop” and knew which role was called for at critical times. He gave the Russians the confidence to let go and he never made them feel that were sacrificing anything worth keeping. Most people are pleased that he and Gorby ended the Cold War and did so without a major war or even a small one. He let Russia be Russia. The only real bad deal of that era was the break up of the former Yugoslavia and neither the USA, Russia or the European Union could have stopped that.
Yeah right, Thatcher and Reagan were a disaster. They only defeated Communism, Cut the growth in government spending, cut taxes and asked people to believe in themselves and less on the nanny state.
Talk about opening your mouth and removing all doubt as to your stupidity, The great trio Reagan, Thatcher and Pope John Paul, ended the cold war thank you very much! Unless your were for communism, socialism, despotism??
Clifford the only way Reagan and Thatcher were a disastor is if you are a fucking communist or a former Soviet…. LMAO
Nuts!
If you believe Reagan and Thatcher were a disaster for the world, you are either uneducated, brainwashed or completely deranged. Two of the greatest LEADERS of our time. They saved the world and changed it for the better.
If you want DISASTER, look no further than Carter, Obama and the current crop of morons in the Democrat/Labor parties.
I guess you are all by yourself on that opinion.
Learned people and Historians think these two -along with John Paul II- defeated the evil Soviet Union and brought freedom to the World.
you sir are an ass
Ronald Reagan, Margaret Thatcher and John Paul II were three “men” with a good songs measure and they trampled an empire down.
Clifford is obviously a (gag!) Progressive.
Obviously, since all Ronald Reagan did was end the cold war and revive the economy after it had experienced the worst recession since the great depression.
Who spiked your Worcestershire sauce, Clifford? Thanks for your stooge input, numbnuts. Reagan rocks and could still come back from six feet under to mop the floor with any world leader today. The Berlin Wall is rubble, like your socialist dreams, because he stared down the USSR without a shot fired.
Superman, the “all-American hero”, is actually created by a Canadian.
Wrong. It was created primarily by Jerry Siegel, an American, with Joe Shuster, a Canadian-born American, in Ohio (which is decidedly not in Canada.) And in the story, the superhero grows up in Kansas (again, not in Canada.) Superman is about as American as you can get.
And yet, I have no problem with the part being played by a Brit.
Superman was an illegal immigrant, not American but Kryptonian.
It does not matter what nationality the person is as long as that person does a good job of acting the part. Oh, and by the way Miss Streep is an ACTRESS ( Feminin) not an actor,( Masculin ). Get it right.
The Thatcher role was acquired by America in exchange for the rights to have a Brit play Superman.
You don’t need a Brit to play this part; you need an actor.
They also didn’t get a South African to play Nelson Mandela in Invictus…or a real werewolf in “Werewolf…” What’s your point?
Yeah get a Brit to play a great British Lady and Leader, not a lame stupid liberal.. She should be played by a conservative…
Jon Voight and Mel Gibson were unavailable.
Ms. Streep becomes the part more than any actor today. She’ll be great. After playing this part maybe she’ll rethink her liberal credentials. I know. Wishful thinkng.
Streep is a great lady. Liberal? Oh well, she’s the best at what she does and a rare example of being highly praised and under-rated. Brits will be pleasantly surprized.
Meryl Streep, The Hag, wouldn’t have taken the role unless she can put her own spin on it. You wait, the movie will focus on her faults and probably portray her as some insecured and intolerant bigot. Meryl doesn’t deserve to impersonate such a lady of great stature. She will be overly dramatic. I don’t have problem of her being an American since Brits play American roles as well, but Meryl Streep portraying Lady Thatcher is like trying to make a silk purse from a sow’ s ear.
They couldn’t get a Brit to play this role? How fucking lame.
Well, considering how few Brits there are in politics or entertainment who are anything like Margaret Thatcher, it shouldn’t surprise you. Wait, I know. We’ll get Tracey Ullman to play Margaret Thatcher. Or maybe Matt Lucas. Besides, you’ve got a Brit actor to portray the next Superman, so what are you complaining about?
Your vocabulary negates any validity of your opinion.
Ms. Streep is a resident of the world and is one of it’s 5 greatest living actors. Something to occupy your limited intelligence: who might the other 4 be.
Anthony Hopkins
Sean Connery
Helen (Forgot her last name)
Betty White
Helen Mirren…off to the Tower with you!
What about Judi Dench? I’d add her to your list.
OMG…Taylor, is that you?
I’d hate to see the rest of your list. Ms. Streep is the most overrated actor of our generation. Incredibly predictable and repetitious in terms of personality. Her praise has been unwarranted. Had she not been a primary flag-bearer of radical leftist agendas, her reward shelf would be empty.
“The most overrated actor of our generation”? I think you need to start taking your meds again. I’m not going to even begin to point out how many things are wrong with your comment, but will ask who do you think is a great actor/actress? If Meryl is overrated and predictable, then who is great by your standards?
I agree. Her liberal condesention just oozes from her pores. I cringe to think what she will make of the remarkable Mrs. Thatcher. Did you see what see did to Julia Childe? uh, I couldn’t even watch it!
What petulance.
So, she doesn’t need a passport?
What is a resident of the world? Who’s world, who are the other citizens in this world? Where is this world? What is produced in this world? How are their products sold? Actor’s salires? How much does Mrs. Strep pay in taxes in this world.
why does it always have to be a brit for a brit or an american for an american…..she’s an actor for crying out loud and a great one at that.
And yet a Brit is playing Superman. Where’s the rage?
It’s payback for sending us Simon Cowell.
No return basis on that one.
It’s your own fault – you took David Beckham so we couldn’t pass up sending you Simon now could we
A Brit is playing Superman…How fucking lame.
“They couldn’t get a Brit to play this role?” Their first Brit choice, Susan Boyle was unable to take time from her busy schedule.
They wanted the part played by someone that could act…
You have to be a Brit to PLAY a Brit? How fucking lame.
They couldn’t get an American to sing the National Anthem at the Super Bowl! I have chatted with many veterans who cried at that performance!
Anyone who cries because someone nervously flubbed a couple words in a song- Any song- Is a giant pussy.
Song? ANY song? This was our NATIONAL ANTHEM and should have been sung as written, without personal interpretation and with respect; or she should not have accepted the priviledge to sing it at all.
“Anyone who cries because someone nervously flubbed a couple words in a song- Any song- Is a giant p+++y.”
This was not the first time that she had flubbed the U.S. National Anthem. She is a citizen of the U.S. of A. (As is Meryl Streep, btw). She should be able to sing her own country’s national anthem.
….Who would you suggest….Benny Hill….?
Benny Hill – that’s funny (and no reflection of her appearance, which I believe is beautiful!) I have nothing but love and admiration for one of the civilization’s all-time greatest statespersons. The Gipper’s great partner in governance, freedom and stability.
After an incredible career covering widely mixed roles, how can she be denied any role.
Take another look at the photo!
You want a Brit? How about Benny Hill.
That’s why they’re called “actors” idiot… American cinema and TV is full of Brits and Aussies and other foreigners.
Excellent comment. Hence my embarrassment, being English, to have to read these snide comments about American actors playing a Brit.
Streep has the chops. BUT…
My only objection is that this IS A HIT JOB. No doubt.
It’s like a plane with two wings. Both left.
Indeed. Do you really think a radical leftist actor and a radical leftist director will give a fair performance about one of the left’s most hated figures of the last century?
-
The good news is that Streep is severally overrated. I predict a forgettable performance with tiny box office returns.
I agree. The odds of this being a hatchet job are about 9 in 10. It’s a shame too….ALL politicians could learn a few things about integrity, economics, and common sense from the Iron Lady.
Actors Idiot…hmmmm never heard them called that before, but for the vast majority it fits!
Harry Potter roles all went to British actors. That’s where the big money went, so be happy for small favors. God save the Queen!
Right. Because no Brit has ever played an American in a film.
Sincerely,
Vivien Leigh et elia
Inappropriate
Ms. Streep has proven her versatility, over and over. We didn’t complain about Catherine Zeta Jones, who is Welsh, starring in Chicago. Gimmee a break.
you want a brit to play this part??? then you brits should make your own fahking movie.
You must be unaware of the fact that Anthony Hopkins played Richard Nixon in the movie “Nixon”. Do I need to spell it out? I think I should. Nixon was a former US President and Anthony Hopkins is British. Hopkins has US citizenship, but that was through naturalization.
I completely agree – Anthony Hopkins playing Richard Nixon. Or Michael Gambon playing Lyndon B. Johnston (“Path to War”.) They were both ridiculous. When casting key historical figures fundamental to a nation’s psyche, even intertwined within that nation’s DNA, have the artistic integrity to cast somebody from there. And as to Superman, he wasn’t an “American”. He was born on the planet Krypton. Which is a fictional planet. Superman is in fact a fictional character. But of course, you wouldn’t know that.
Yes, but Superman landed in the American midwest. He always fought for “Truth. Justice. And the AMERICAN WAY.”
In the comics, he was undeniably an American Hero, and a patriot.
He was an American Immigrant…originally from Krypton.
I was just saying the same thing about the shows in America featuring the likes of Simon Cowell, Piers Morgan and even Jamie Oliver, Danny Boome & Curtis Stone – I don’t see the need to import talent. Of course, Nigella Lawson can stay, anyone who can describe culinary treats with such eloquence is a step above British foul-mouth exports like Gordon Ramsay.
Did we go crazy when a Brit played Scarlett O’Hara in Gone With The Wind? She won the academy award for the performance because she was great. And the picture is still one of the highest grossing, most viewed movies ever made. It is however sad to have a limosine liberal play the part of such a strong, powerful conservative leader.
That is a dumb post – Tons of Brits, Aussies, etc. play American characters.
You heard of Christian Bale right? Maybe Henry Cavill? You know that works both ways. You didn’t hear a bunch of Yanks say “oh why’d they cast that wanker for Batman or Superman!” No you didn’t. Like we here in the states could give a toss.
Excuse me??? How about all the Brit’s that play Americans and we don’t complain. If they have the talent to play the part why not have them do it ?
It’s called acting. If you don’t do it (which clearly you don’t) then STFU. No real actor would take issue with this.
Actually, I wish they’d get an American to play the husband. Anything other than another totally predictable performance from Jim Broadbent.
And they couldn’t find a American actor to play Superman. Even more fucking lame
Uh…you do see how many Brit and Australian actors are coming in to play American roles; super heroes, cowboys, soccer moms. That’s the most ridiculous post I’ve ever seen for one of the greatest actresses this world has ever seen.
Look at it this way…she’s probably a Brit several generations removed.
Have you ever seen Shakespeare played by an American or an Italian aria sung by an American?
Why are you so angry?
Yhea, folks said something similar when Brit Vivien Leigh played Scarlett. Maybe we should just wait ’till we see the movie…
I personally think John Cleese would have been a solid choice.
Excuse me? How many Brits are on American TV playing Americans? “They’re taking our jobs!”…does that ring a bell? …That’s acting. If you can play it convincingly, hurray for all of us.
What about the recent announcement that a Brit will be playing Superman. It’s irrevelant who plays what. It only matters if the actor or actress can pull it off successfully. Get a life and don’t be a bigot.
what is wrong with an American playing a Brit? Brits have been playing Americans for years — all over television House, The Mentalist, and at least 8 more all star Brits as Americans. So get over it.
You’re right — they should’ve gotten Susan Boyle to play Thatcher. #sarcasm
It isn’t lame to cast Streep as Thatcher. Many more Brits have been cast as Americans rather than Americans as Brits. So who’s lame now?
“They couldn’t get a Brit to play this role? How fucking lame.”
They couldn’t find one to play Bridget Jones either! I guess female Brit actress’s suck?
Hmmm, you mean like brilliant Brit Hugh Laurie playing House; or even more brilliant Brit Anthony Hopkins playing Hannibal Lecter; or Brit Ben Kingsley as Ghandi? Hellll-o: it’s called ACTING not being a British Ambassador.
Agreed… They should have casted a real english lady with who has a real English accent from the UK. That’s screwed up
It’s a trade. We had Anthony Hopkins playing Nixon.
im sure meryl will do better than a british person ever could!!!!!!
Meryl streep is wonderful and will play they role better than any british actor could ever try to! Every movie she has done was a hit, so have SOME RESPECT!!!!!
Reality check… Streep doesn’t tranform into anyone, she is just an actress with the resources of vocal coaches, make-up artists, and wardrobe people who make her look like someone else. When you mistakenly give credit to the wrong person you rob the the real hero.
Right. So, clearly Pamela Anderson would be just as good as Meryl Streep as long as she has the right voice coach, make-up artist and wardrobe person. Good God. What a concept!
I am ever amazed by the praise Streep gets for common performances. She is the most overrated actor of our generation.
-
Additionally, she’s a radical leftist being directed by a radical leftist to play one of the left’s greatest villains of the last century. Do you really think it will be a fair portrayal? Get ready for a rewriting of history.
imo ACTING does not require dna.
I hope they use one of Margaret Thatcher’s most famous quotes:
“The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people’s money.”
That was a great quote from the Iron Lady.
Except of coures, in Hollywood, they NEVER run out of other people’s money, hence all thoise anti-Iraqi war movies that utterly failed at the box office.
I LOVE your comment/assessment. I applaud the choice of Meryl to play Thatcher, but I too am skeptical as to how lib Hollywood will portray her since they’ve never met a conservative they couldn’t hate.
There at least as many conservatives in Hollywood as there are liberals, if not more. Having lived in California most of my life, I can tell you that anything south of the Bay Area is decidedly conservative. Remember that guy who just served as the Governor of the state? Guy named Arnie? I have no doubt that Hollywood will give the story a fair treatment. If it were too liberal, it wouldn’t make any money in the U.S.
We know she’ll do excellent work but success is simply in script accuracy ..
Exactly my reaction. I actually wondered why Deadline New York was reporting about Margaret Thatcher until I realized it was really Meryl Streep. Meryl Streep has to be the most phenomenal actress of our time! She is ALWAYS the character and NEVER the actor.
Exactamundo!
Perfect casting! When they do the Obama bio, I’m sure he’d be thrilled if they cast MS to play him!
In case you jack wagons hadn’t noticed, MS is the greatest actress to ever breath in film.
I hope she won’t put a Hollywood liberal spin on the character and all her achievements. I really hate the Hollywood version of history sometimes.
If Dr. House can be played by a brit I have no trouble with Ms. Streep playing Iron Maggie. You go girl. (Still waiting for Hugh Laurie to drop the words “enormous trousers” or “Bladder!” into his dialog somewhere.)
Dylan forgets his lyrics every time he sings…but he still gets the message across…so did little Christina…she’s a National Treasure…and she knows it, now…
Christina was just fine…it’s not the lyric…it’s the story…Dylan always meshed his words live…as did the Byrds and the Beatles…as did all of the great Beat bands…little Christina got it right…’nuff said…
Not only that, but her talent for a broad range of accents is perfect. Amazing, indeed.
The makeup artist should get an Oscar for doing her face.
Thatcher was probably better looking at her age, except teeth
Why would they get a super lib, Streep, who ruined the US apple industry for a spell to portray a good conservative is beyond me.
Meryl Streep is an Icon, as was Margarete Thatcher, for both positive and negative, repressive tactics, and a optional and objectionable war(Faulklands/Malvinas) That slamming of each others country(Americans can’t act) We save you from Hitler(and Stalin)http://www.deadline.com/2011/02/first-look-meryl-streep-as-mrs-thatcher/#respondand the fact Ronnie Pope John Paul and “The Iron Lady” triumphal won the Cold War ignores the 35 years of Truman, one more time with Churchill(most notible the “Iron Curtain Speech”
Countering Soviet and Sino moves with Korea and Vietnam Wars, and The Russians Afghanistan war(where CIA and Rep. Charlie Wilson, and espicially Mujhadin defeated the Red Army…
All of that played a part in going from eich ein Berliner from Kennedy to “Mr. Gorbachev, Tear down this wall!!” Solidarity, and the Iron Mrs. Thatcher being the “hired gun” in support of Reagan’s ideals (Do you hear that “You Americans are such COWBOYS” nonsense being spouted every time we don’t appease an enemy(ala Chamberlain claiming peace for our time”….Lets just strive for a peaceful world, where Conservative and liberal evolve back into civil partners in our global social experiment!!!
Can’t wait so see this film!
Wow, she looks spot-on. She certinly knows how to act; I trust she will do the role honor. I look forward to watching this one.
What a perfect choice for the Part of Mrs. Thatcher. No one could come close to playing her better than Meryl Streep. She is an outstanding talent and will portray her magnificently. Can’t wait to see the final product.
Liz
I agree whole heartily that Streep in the “man” for the job!
What is with these American actors playing British superheroes.
I think you mean American actors playing British supervillains!
No one who knows Thatcher’s history can call her heroic.
Oh how wrong you are. Typical liberal nutbag can’t stand it when people actually accomplish stuff by making tough decisions that may ‘offend’ people.
Anyone who knows Thatcher knows you are a moron and obviously cannot tell a hero from a hole in the ground.
What a typical dumb liberal comment. Thatcher was more of a man than any breathing liberal man in the UK or America. That’s why the movie is being made. Obviously you were too young to remmeber just how incredible this woman and Reagan were for the world. Liberals….God help us!
I love how conservatives always reach back to Ronald Reagan as the perfect example of a leader. Guess y’all think W was as much of an idiot as I think he was. And what about Sarah Palin? Oops — am I permitted to use her name now that’s it’s getting trademarked??
Reagan was a doddering old fool who confused Hollywood with real life, vilifying imaginary welfare queens while running up a huge debt and one of the most criminal administrations in this country’s history. As for Thatcher, she was your problem and thank God for that.
So that’s the agenda with a leftist portraying Madam Thatcher: to rewrite history and tarnish her memory. I would be happy to flush the turd in the White House and replace it with A lady Like Ms. Thatcher.
There really is no need to be so partisan. Mrs Thatcher is one of Britain’s greatest Prime Minister’s. The fact that you didn’t like her politics doesn’t mean you cannot acknowledge that she contributed much to public life and left an indelible print on the political, social and economic landscape both in Britain and abroad. The people of the Falklands haven’t forgotten her nor are the Argentinians likely to forget her either.
She is a hero and is more “ballsy” than a lot of blokes…..
You are obviously liberal trash if you don’t respect her. Get out of Britain.
Many of us do consider Thatcher a hero. The villains are socialist, who are like religious fanatics praying to the false god of Marx.
What about praying to the false god, money? The free market isn’t without it’s problems. By the way, I consider myself a moderate and I believe most reasonably people are.
In Lady Thatcher’s day I was on an airport shuttle van with two men and we passed the time discussing with whom we would most enjoy spending an hour of conversation. They cited movie stars and athletic heroes. I said “Margaret Thatcher” and their eyes grew large and they said,”Oh, yes.” Truth is, I would be tongue-tied.
So were you intimately acquainted, or was your comment a reflection of your political views? Lots of us admire her for having the courage to take on British womb-to-tomb socialism. Have you learned that socialism only works, as she said, until you run out of other people’s money? In this case, America’s money, which is what kept Britain afloat.
The Brits seemed to like her, they kept putting her in office.
Streep, while an absolutely amazing actress, trashes the characters she plays, all the while making money and winning awards. Julia Child, Margaret Thatcher…The hypocrisy of the left.
No, “Superheroes” is the right word.
Kindly keep your deviant beliefs to yourself.
Rewind: Any objective person who knows Lady Thatcher’s history knows she is a superhero! Let’s hope the movie will reflect the truth.
No hope of accurate portrayal. Ever seen a a western made movie truthful about Stalin or Mao? The movie biz is reliably dishonest.
Only a certified MORON would call Mrs. Thatcher anything but a heroic figure. The UK was at its best when she was the PM.
You’re right. Britain was much better off in the throes of the economic turmoil of the late 1970s, with super high inflation, unemployment, and the trade unions literally fire-bomb rioting in the streets. And since pseudo-intellects like you always mistakenly credit Gorbachev for “tearing down that wall” you still need to give her the credit for declaring him a man the West “can do business with” when he was a nobody. It was that statement that set the stage for the future scaling down of tensions between East and West, resulting in the full scale collapse of Soviet communism and oppression. If that’s your idea of evil, I’ll take super villain any day.
Not heroic?
Another critic of whom Thatcher said, “If I walked across the river Thames, my critics would say that I could not swim”!
Her speeches and off the cuff comments were as funny and sharop as our Reagan’s. Would drive her opponents mad.
Mrs. Thatcher was a gallant and courageous figure at a time when Great Britain needed one. Anyone who denies that is a “lefty” of the first magnitude. Her legacy ranks with Winston Churchill. I would take either of them right now in place of our “man-child” president, Obama.

I love how all these right wing-nuts seem to have completely forgotten how Thatcher mishandled the Northern Ireland troubles, how her “tough stand” against the miners strike cost the nation a billion, and how her push for privatization was widely seen as a disaster — where poor John Major took the fall for it. And all of you wingnuts who salute Reagan for meeting with Gorbachev — Thatcher was violently against any negotiations with the Soviets.
Why not? Henry Cavill will be the new “Superman”, and Christian Bale is “Batman”, both quintessential American heroes.
biker, I think they were making a joke after all the uproar in here last week when a Brit was announced as the new Superman.
Thank you, Chris. It was a subtle jab, obviously wasted on the Drudge crowd.
Oh, you are such the sophisticate, Donnelly!
YES! Exactly. The Brits have an insecurity about Americans playing them. But then, I was once told by a very smug Brit that Americans can’t do Shakespeare because it’s in “the Queen’s English…” Funny, I said, the Queen’s English wasn’t invented until centuries after Shakespeare was long dead and buried. Imagine that.
Spot on…..
Conversely, why are Brits flooding American newsrooms when capable Americans are being ignored.
Don’t forget that Jonathan Rhys Meyers played Elvis Presley for a major American mini-series, and he beat out many, many Americans for the part. Directors look for the best actors, and actors, if really good, can pull it off. That’s why they get paid so highly. They may make it look easy, but it isn’t …
I’ll tell you what. We’ll give you back Piers Morgan and you can send Meryl back to us. We’ll even throw in the English TV execs who are attempting to program “American.”
Why does it matter? I just want her to do a great job in that role.
Meryl is British by birth.
Umm what part of the UK is Summit, New Jersey in??
hey, we just cast a brit to play superman. quid pro quo mate.
When I saw the picture, my first thought was, (boy, that’s a great pic of Margaret Thatcher) Even the way Streep holds her mouth is awesome. This should be great!
Great choice! I look forward to seeing Ms.Streep doing ,I’m sure, a brilliant bit of acting.
I can only hope this doesn’t end up being a liberal rewrite of history.
One doesn’t need a liberal rewrite; the simple conservative truth is damning enough. Blimey.
Damning enough? You think portraying the truth about Thatcher would be damning?
Your low opinion of the Iron Lady is, itself, damning.
It’s better than conservatives’ versions of history — like Gone With The Wind and the good old, happy days of slavery.
My exact thought when I saw this. I recall Stones depiction of Bush, absolutely deplorable.
Amen!
WRITE? Once again, this post mentions director, producer and actor. Apparently, they just wing this thing, no screenwriter needed.
It will be a rewrite. Streep is a committed leftist, so she won’t do justice to Thatcher.
does that mean she shops at the Leftorium? i hope it does if only because i know how tough the recession has been on stores like Ned Flandereseses.
That’s… eerie.
So the question is will the film be fair to Thatcher’s legacy or is it a hatchet job by liberals intent on rewriting history to bash one of Great Britain’s greatest Prime Ministers?
Meryl Streep is a fine actress, but she is too liberal to appreciate Thatcher’s policies.
I predict this is a hatchet job.
I have no doubt that Meryl Streep is technically capable of playing Mrs. Thatcher with insight and depth. I share your fears that the script, and the liberal biases Streep and much of the production team have historically shared will result in a production that does us all a disservice.
Margaret Thatcher deserves thoughtful, in depth, perceptive cinematic consideration. The King’s Speech has shown how accurate historical depiction can encourage and inspire. I hope, rather than believe, this film will be such an undertaking.
You are spot on, HBO just did a hatchet job on Reagan by a scumbag name Eugene Jarecki. Re-writing history is becoming a so-called art form for these easily-amused charletons.
The Reagan documentary on HBO was spot on. That is the trouble with you Conservatives fools you just can’t deal with Facts!!!! Instead of CRYING explain what the Documentary said that was not a FACT. You people sure seem to have a problem with FACTS!!!! Ronald Reagan should have been IMPEACHED for the Iran/Contra incident. He broke the LAW, another FACT. An he was advised that he was breaking the Law according to sources in his own Cabinet, Ronald Reagan was also a Racist Bastard, who was against the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting rights Act of 1965…Deal with it FACTS!!!!
AMEN !!!
I’m afraid you’re right!
Meryl is a big fan of Obama and an active knee-jerk liberal. Helen Mirren would have been a better choice.
I had the same thought – Why not Helen Mirren? Then I realised, they need Mirren to play the Queen. And if Streep is left of center, trying to get into Margaret Thatcher’s mind may do her a world of good.
Love comment above. M. Streep is a poor choice if she does not play M. T. as a true hero of Britian. With her extreme leftist views, I wonder if she will get it right.
M. Thatcher was a terrific lady with great backbone and vision.
Hope they (Hollywood) do not mess up with their leftist agenda.
She was a fantastic leader and never a whinny woman. But, I have little faith in Hollywood.
I believe you are correct. The Left is all about historical revisionism to create heroes of villains and villains of heroes. Streep is a dedicated Leftist, I have no doubt this film will cast Thatcher is the worst possible way.
The LEFT is about rewriting history?
Oh sure, Conservatives tell the truth the WHOLE fucking time. That’s honestly the single greatest laugh on this thread.
It’s amazing how deluded the right is as much as they claim the left are.
No one tells the truth the WHOLE time. But no one claimed that, you MORON.
But it’s not that all liberals are outright liars. They’ve just bought into common, regurgitated lies. They can’t think for themselves, and are “crowd mentality” lemmings. If your professor preaches it, or you see it in a left-wing movie, it MUST be true, right?
As Ronald Reagan observed, It’s not that liberals are DUMB. It’s that they know SO much of what ISN’T true.
You libs can’t state a disagreement without using profanity, can you? You looters and moochers have lost your humanity. No worry: you’ll soon starve like the dogs you’ve become.
Hilarious irony isn’t it? Reagan has been recast as a great president and political philosopher by Republicans who cite Reagan quotes about small government and conservative economics, never minding the reality that the federal government tripled in size and debt spiraled out of control under Reagan.
And the Pope John Paul?!? You’ve got to be kidding me…i guess someone who releases directives on how to cover up pedophilia amongst members of an organization of which they are the head could still be considered a great man in some sort of twisted mind, but let’s face it: Covering up pedophilia is the definition of evil, end of story.
If liberal Gregory Peck could play Douglas McArthur and make McArthur sympathetic, why can’t Meryl Streep play a sympathetic Margaret Thatcher?
“If liberal Gregory Peck could play Douglas McArthur and make McArthur sympathetic…”
Good question. It was a different, classier time, when “liberal” actually meant “liberal” in its classical sense. Now it simply means we’re in charge, screw you conservative.
Plus Peck seemd to have been a great human-being whatever his politics!
Streep is no actress she is just a mimic. This movie is made by left wing idiots, only left wing idiots will pay money to see it.
So what does that make you? A complete Fool would be my guess.
I agree. This movie will almost assuredly SUCK.
Has anyone ever seen a movie about Vietnam that depicted the US soldier as a heroic individual and a force for good? The only depiction I’ve ever seen of an American soldier in Vietnam is that of a homicidal maniac, a murderer, an abuser or women and children, or he’s portrayed as a dupe and a misguided fool, who learns only too late what a corrupt military and an evil country America is.
That’s entertainment! THAT’S Hollywood. They DESPISE Thatcher. They are top-to-bottom, foam-at-the-mouth haters. They hate Christianity. They hate the free market. They hate America.
The movie’s gonna suck.
Oscar!
This should be good, a hard core Liberal playing a hard core Conservative.
And the next year Oscar will go to….
Those British royals and politics are quite popular among Oscar aren’t they?
– Queen Elizabeth I – Oscar to Judi Dench (Shakespeare in Love).
– Queen Elizabeth I – two Oscar nominations for Cate Blanchett.
– Queen Elizabeth II – Oscar for Helen Mirren.
– Michael Sheen just missed out nomination for Tony Blair
– King George VI – Oscar for Colin Firth in 3 weeks
– Queen Elizabeth II – scar nomination Helena Bonham Carter
Who else is left? Margaret Thatcher is already in production. Toni Blair and Winston Churchill need a personal movie with big stars playing them too.
Who else is left?
Pardon me. Helena for Queen mother.
Well, Helena is playing Queen Elizabeth, just not the II.
Brendan Gleeson and Albert Finney both gave excellent portrayals of Winston Churchill.
Unless the former British PM got a sex change, I believe he is TONY Blair!!
Who would you like to see play Sir Winston? I’m a Yank that lived in the UK for three years-father is a Welshman. He grew up during the war and is very fond of Churchill. Used to imitate him on the field radio during the Korean War. Some of his mates I met said it was very funny.
I hope she can play a conservative versus a liberal hollywood type.
Must Hollywood flaunt it’s immorality at all things. How can someone such as the Whore of Babylon be selected to play the virtuous Lady Thatcher. hopefully the Brits will be up in arms over having an American play a proper British lady. I am an American and I offer my humblest apologies to the British people.
Don’t apologise on my account – or at least half of the British public who couldn’t stand the old cow! Streep looks far too pretty and far too sane to portray that hideous megalomaniac.
I’m not up in arms over an American playing it. I feel desperately sorry for any actress having to immerse themselves in THAT character. Someone German would have been an ideal choice. Preferably one with a little toothbrush moustache!
Yep, typical. If you don’t agree with someone, call them Hitler.
Leave it to lefties to beat the “conservatives are Nazi’s” Insult Horse to death.
Get some new material.
I’m not a leftie – I’m not an anything, I take people as I find them and listen to the views of all sides before making up my mind. You, however are clearly a typical right-winger, starts wetting your pants if someone criticises Thatcher. Leave it to the fascists to start wriggling uncomfortably when their beloved party gets likened to the Third Reich.
Meryl Streep was born in New Jersey of British parents. She is dual citizenship.
“Whore of Babylon”? Really? Please tell us more about conservative civility and respectfulness. The last time time I checked, Streep has never been arrested for prostitution. She has had a long term marriage with no scandal or books written against her by her children.
Also, unlike Thatcher, none of Streep’s children is an international criminal like Mark Thatcher or a racist like Carol Thatcher (who was fired for using a racist epithet).

Cmon, thatcher would be honored. Meryl Streep is tops. Who would you rather have Judi dench? It’s done.
If you’re going to be a troll, try and be an entertaining one.
Why is it they always have to use liberals to play conservatives on TV & film?
obviously it’s discrimination. we need affirmative action for conservatives in the media!
except that conservatives are against affirmative action… d’oh!!!
Alex,in answer to your query, if a liberal played a liberal there is no character to get into, and you would probably puke!! If a liberal plays a conservative they have a character they can bring to life, something they don’t have so they are playing against type! Now you know.
That is because conservatives are essentially blacklisted in Hollywood!
The nature of acting attracts liberal-minded people more than it does conservatives (although obviously not exclusively).
Therefore, most actors are liberal, and most roles go to liberals.
It’s just the way of the world. I think Meryl Streep will do a great job portraying Margaret Thatcher. Whether it will be a “hatchet job” of her life and legacy will really have more to do with the writer than Ms. Streep.
No doubt a controversial figure…especially with the Argentinians and british labor unions. I think Meryl Streep is probably the best choice to play the Iron Lady & give Lady Thatcher the dignified portrayal she deserves…potential academy awards… Luckily it’s not being directed by Oliver Stone…
Talk about mis-casting! Meryl Streep is as far left as people can get. To have her play the Iron Lady is a slap in the face for all conservatives! Who’s going to play Ronald Reagan? Michael Douglas?
I have a great deal of respect for Margaret Thatcher and hope that the script does her justice. Meryl Streep is a great actress and appears to be a good fit.
What a stunningly accurate likeness of Thatcher! I thought it was Thatcher at first glance.
An American as Thatch. Take that, you Superman/Batman/Spiderman-stealing Brits.
Streep was born of British parents. Both of ‘em. That makes her as British as any other Brit living in England.
Oh, God…
Should be a very interesting spin that socialist rag will put on Lady Thatcher.
Will this be a case where a lefty Hollywood type plays the role of a conservative real person? Will the performance be believable, knowing the impersonator has in her public announcements made it clear she does not believe nor respect the person being played? We’ll see. What next? Al Franken playing Ronald Reagan?
Bingo.
Streep is about the best character actor out there, And if this photo isn’t doctored, she is a dead ringer for Lady Thatcher. I just Hope the script does the Iron Lady justice, because I know Ms Streep certainly will.
Actuually, it is doubtful either she or the script will be fair to Dame Thatcher.
Can her acting overcome the perfume of her politics?
