EXCLUSIVE: Florian Gallenberger has been set by The Kennedy/Marshall Company to rewrite and direct Milli Vanilli, a feature film that tells the story of the ’80s pop duo that soared to the top of the charts then fell just as precipitously when they were exposed as lip-synching frauds. Gallenberger is the German-born filmmaker who won the Academy Award for his live action short film Quiero Ser. His feature John Rabe, which was shot in China and starred Steve Buscemi, won four 2009 German Film Awards including Best Picture. This is the first Hollywood film for Gallenberger, who just signed with UTA and continues to be managed by Anonymous Content.
It turns out that Milli Vanilli is a decidedly German story. The duo, Rob Pilatus and Fabrice Morvan, were hired by German record producer Frank Farian to front a group he’d put together locally. Farian had the singers and the songs, but wanted a certain look to put it over the top. He found that when he spotted model/dancer pals Pilatus and Morvan on the dance floor of a club in Munich. They soared to the top of the charts with songs like Blame It On The Rain and Girl You Know It’s True, and looked perfect in the MTV videos. That was until evidence began to mount that they were phonies. It began with a whispering campaign, and then grew after a live appearance when a recording they were “singing” onstage began repeated phrases over and over, and they finally ran off stage. Pilatus and Morvan by then were anxious to stop the charade, but when they refused to promote a followup album unless they were allowed to really sing, Farian instead exposed the charade. By then, they’d sold millions of records and won a Grammy Award. That trophy was rescinded, class action lawsuits were filed, and the act was dropped from the roster of Arista Records. The guys, clearly in over their heads and terrified so long for living a lie, were demoralized and shamed. It wore hardest on Pilatus, who became a drug addict and served time for robbery. He seemed to have cleaned up his act but right before a reunion album with Morvan could be released, he died from a drug overdose.
The project was originally set up at Universal Pictures, and the catalyst was Jeff Nathanson, who explored the conman aspect in Catch Me If You Can and who secured the cooperation of Morvan and the estate of Pilatus, who died in 1998. The project was taken out Universal by Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall, who will produce with Nathanson. They are lining up private financing and Gallenberger will start writing immediately.

No, thank you.
Yes, please! We want to see that!!!
I remember when the duo rose to fame and fortune, I was a true fan back in the day. And I remember when the story broke and they were exposed as frauds. From what I recall it surrounded money the guy behind their voices never received…I believe he was the one who came forward and their fame hit rock bottom quicker than I’d ever seen. I saw the documentary that aired about them, and I still have their albums and their single “Girl You Know It’s True,” so I’d be interested in seeing the film and how their story is told.
You know they’re gonna change the story up a little bit.
It’s silly that the general public pretended to be outraged by their lip-synching. Pretend singing and fraudulent front men have been around for quite awhile, certainly long before these guys. Really, ever hear of ‘Bony M’? Probably not…How about ‘Soul Train’? WTF, this guy Rob essentially took his own life, or at least threw it away due to his presumed feelings of shame and humiliation. These cats should have been celebrated for getting away with it. It’s only show biz after all, not opera. Long live Milli Vanilli! R.I.P. Rob Pilatus.
Boney M
This movie is so overdue. Their Behind the Music story was one of the saddest I’ve ever seen. Its definitely a cautionary tale. I hope its good.
Seriously.
Even if Milli Vanilli sucked (and they did, big time), this is one helluvan interesting story. Might be fun.
And why would anyone think an audience would care about this story now?
Because, AIR HEAD–they had millions of fans back then who are still around & are interested in their story. We, back then, danced to their music at clubs, watched their videos, dressed like them… Dredds & twists that people are rockin now—weren’t so POPULAR back then..wasn’t so common back then..especially during the era of the greasy drippy JERRY CURL-when everybody and their mother wanted to look like they had–Good Hair! So these guys made dredds look HOT. Plus these 2 model dudes were HOT. So their fans from then are still here. And WE want to see the film. The true story had a very sad ending! If you don’t want to watch it–go screw with Jersey Shore or some sh%#
Because, Anonymous, it might be an amazing story. Or not. Nobody knows yet. It may be good, it may be bad, a hit, a flop, it all depends on the execution. But no, you stick to firing off pointless comments from the ether about things you know nothing about. Much easier, yeah? What did you say when you first heard about The King’s Speech? ‘Huh? A movie about some stuttering British King from the past who I never heard of? Why would anyone think an audience would care about that?’
true. I remember so many people talking about how lame it was that they were making a movie about facebook, and here it is now an oscar contender. it’s all in the execution.
And at the same, rumors that M.C. Skat Cat was lip singing as well were scuttled.
Swift and sly and I’m playing it cool
With my homegirl, Paula Abdul…

Florian would be well served to check out the hilarious parody of
MILL/VANILL that IN LIVING COLOR did with Keenan Wayans and his infinitely more talented brother Damon!
For sure a sad story, and I feel bad that the guy died…buuuuuut I’m not going to be paying to see this. Open the bay doors for this BOMB.
Bruno Mars in dreadlocks – this is Academy Award material. Until, of course, it turns out it was Tyler Perry.
They were the greatest band of all time. A story that must be told.
This should make Elia happy considering the diversity subject matter.
Well those two were exposed. So why Britney Spears is not being exposed as a lyp-synching fraud? She can’t sing her own songs. She never sings live.
I’m speechless…just like Milli Vanilli.
If they had auto-tune back then they could have sang their own stuff, just like those with no (vocal) talent do today.
One of the most interesting, heartbreaking Behind The Music Episodes ever. Two kids who got a lot of money thrown at them to do what was supposed to be couple of weeks touring but the act / lie snowballed out of control. It’s the ultimate “Big Lie” story. Could be another “Quiz Show” if it’s done well.
I remember seeing them guest-star on NBC’s Sister Kate, and their accents were jarringly thick and I thought “No way that’s really them.” The controversy broke shortly thereafter.
Had Ed Sullivan still been alive and still doing his Sunday-night variety show in the late 1980′s, I think he would have been the one to expose Milli Vanilli.
Chances are Ed would have found out the truth during a rehearsal, booted the two out, cancelled their appearance, then announce at the top of his program: “Tonight, on our shoe, we wouldda had Milli Vanilli. We cancelled their appearance after I saw during rehearsals this afternoon that they lip-synched their act to other people’s singing”.
“They are a fraud!”
“While some fans were disappointed, you should know that for many years, our shoe has stood for bringing you the best in every field of entertainment. Milli Vanilli is a fraud, a fake, and definitely not worth showcasing on our stage”.
Sorry but these guys scored hits in Europe before they scored in the USA, and everybody(I mean EvErYbOdY) in Europe knew they were lip synching. So why this was not immediately known in the US was a mystery to us all over here.
Why would you make a movie about a couple of hired hands? It’s way too much honour for F. Farian, the producer who produced one abysmal act after the other.
It was GREAT STORY! And Music was perfect!
I like Milli Vanilli. Just keep in mind the Monkey’s couldn’t play instruments!
holding my breath to see this story on the big screen!
Just a few suggestions for casting.. Michael Ealy and Lance Gross could pay Rob and Fab. I can’t think of anyone else that would be suited for those roles.
