CNN’s former dominance in coverage of major international crises is long gone. Fox News leads the cable news ratings for the coverage of the unrest in Egypt so far by a wide margin, but the continuous coverage of the turmoil in Cairo has lifted CNN from No.3 to No.2 in most categories. From Monday through Thursday, Fox News drew 2.5 million viewers (628,000 in adults 25-54) in primetime and 1.2 million (344,000) in total day. CNN’s averages were: primetime (959,000; 341,000 in 25-45) and total day (620,000; 213,000 in 25-54), MSNBC drew 961,000 (254,000 in 25-54) in primetime and 486,000 (134,000 in 25-54) in total day. Vs. their January averages, CNN posted the biggest ratings bump, up 43% in total viewers in primetime. It was followed closely by Fox News, up 38%, while MSNBC didn’t gain a lot, up 16%.
The much publicized Cairo attack on CNN’s Anderson Cooper on Wednesday led to a rare win for his AC 360 program that night in the 25-54 demographic (409,000) over Fox News’ Greta Van Susteren (342,000) and MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow (231,000). Van Susteren still won the 10 PM in total viewers by a comfortable margin (1.7 million vs. 1.2 million) By Thursday night, Cooper’s demo advantage was pretty much gone, averaging 446,000 viewers in the 25-54 demographic vs. 443,000 for Van Susteren.

I find this extremely interesting. I live in Canada and have many channels available to me.
I watch CBC, BBC, Al Jeezera (sp), MNSBC, CNN, CNN Spanish, CNBC, the Big 3 Networks and the Internet.
At times I watch Fox but not often.
I also read magazines and newspapers from around the world. All the perspectives keep me on my toes and I can see every single perspective. Everyone has a viewpoint. I like that.
Same here Anegla I also am Canadian. It’s really interesting to stand back and watch it all and how each network has their own spin. It’s quite something. Ahh the news. The Daily Show then brings it all into focus and pokes fun at the pathetic attention span of these networks. Gotta love Jon Stewart
I have been very unsatisfied with the Egypt uprising coverage from ALL the networks. Instead of focusing on the death and suffering of the people in Egypt, it’s turned into the “poor is me” rich journalists being attacked. Hello! You are going into the eye of a protest war and you think you will stay safe? I don’t agree with anyone being attacked but these journalists are not special. Anyone going to a protest like this will be attacked. The first rule of journalism is “don’t make yourself the story”. I wish they would go back to focus on the actual story, you know the Egyptians that are dying in the streets of Cairo just for freedom.
The first rule of journalism is “don’t make yourself the story”.
Oh come now, you don’t actually believe there is anyone left in American journalism who understands (and implements) journalistic principles do you? If so, then I’m guessing you didn’t watch the coverage of the 2008 election campaign. Such coverage revealed that the fourth estate is but a shell of its former self.
So yes, the scrape on Andersen Cooper’s left pinky is far more newsworthy than dead Egyptians, just as every white journalist and celeb who trekked to Haiti was a far more important story than the thousands of black and brown bodies lying dead in those streets. Now that the imporatant whites are gone, we no longer have coverage of the 300,000 blacks who remain in tents in Haiti. The same fate — that of inconsequence — awaits the Egyptian freedom fighters.
CNN went from #3 to #2, that’s because when there’s real news people tune to FOX or CNN. Chris Matthews (MSNBC) is trying to blame Bush for what’s happening in Egypt, they’re not a news network, they’re a branch of the DNC. NBC News is an abortion.
“NBC News is an abortion”
umm, try again. Fox “News”/Tea Party Propaganda is.
but lets be real- faux news just makes shit up. its not news by any means.
Give us one example of a story that was simply “made up” by Fox. We’ll just wait for you to document your assertion. *Jeopardy theme plays in the background*
It’s so much easier to just spout mindless, unsupported hate and drivel than to back it up with facts, now isn’t it?
NBC NEWS is #1 look it up for yourself (TV by the numbers) if you want the truth…..
Perhaps Faux News tops the ratings because more progressive-minded people have better things to do with their time than sit glued to the boob tube for six hours a day soaking up lies and propaganda.
Best description, ever, for Fox News viewers:
shut-ins
Well that didn’t take long. People’s obsession with Fox can’t be healthy. Even after all the haters it continues to dominate, haha!
Whatever you need to tell yourself, chief.
By your reasoning, I suppose those “more progressive-minded people” also had “better” things to do than get to the polls on November 2, given the number of Dems we sent running back to their districts with their tails between their legs.
Nice try at making excuses for the continued failure of the left-wing media, though.
I’d also add that progressives get their news from multiple sources. Group think is the primary reason Fox news does so well. I guess it makes sense politically– if you notice, they always stay on message with the exact same talking points.
Alex, I agree. In my opinion and that of many of my friends, MSNBC is a train wreck. Whether it was Olbermann’s caustic rhetoric which was often void of any genuine fact checking, Chris Matthews’ unabashed support for the Obama Administraion and his relentless Bush bashing, Lawrence O’Donnell’s elitism or Rachel Maddow’s snarky use of blog posts as “real news,” And as for Ed Shultz well, he’s not even worth the effort… MSNBC is the laughing stock of “news networks” and if anything, it is now just a bizzare curiosity.
Quite frankly, as far as intellectual rigor is concerned, Sean Hannity or Glen Beck lose badly when compared to Rachel Maddow.
…and don’t mistake Jon Stewart’s “The Daily Show” for anything but comedy. His modis operandi is to take statements grossly out-of-context to make some here’s that word again…”snarky” punchline or comment. If you think you are learning anything from that show you are a fool.
Sad, seeing as Fox “News” did not even have Egypt in the correct place on their map. http://mediamatters.org/blog/200907270040
and we wonder why there are so many Americans who have no idea as to where these countries really are in the world. Stop watching this fake news network and go find some real news.
CNN had equal trouble in locating Queensland, but Media Matters won’t mention it because they funded by convicted money launderer George Soros – an extreme lefty.
I agree. It’s HORRIBLE that some intern in the graphics department likely mislabeled a map. That’s an egregiosu display of ignorance, right? In the future, I suggest Fox consult our brilliant President on matters of geography. You know, the same President who visted 57 (!!) US states, and still had “ONE MORE to go.” Yeah, Obams’s the geographic oracle. With such a briliant guy in charge, if he tries to attack a foreign nation, my bet is that Ohio will be hit first.

Exactly. And don’t you love the way Faux “accidentally” mislabels scandal-ridden Republicans as Democrats? Wish I had a dollar for every time they did that. Because at Faux, it’s not the truth that matters, only what you can get people to believe.
Fox is the only place for unbiased professional news. CNN is a joke, NBC is amateur hour and Katie is still trying to figure out what the Internet is. (MSNBC doesn’t merit comment)
You’re kidding, right? Bush spokesman Scott McClellan admitted in his book that the Bush admin routinely fed Fox News talking points which they then reported as “news.” That’s what’s known as state-run media, dimwit, not unbiased professional news. The Soviets had a similar set-up, but don’t let the facts get in the way.
cookmeyer1970, So one ignorant graphics person should indict a whole network? Is that really the best you can do? That person would lose his or her job immediately if I were in charge.
Was there deception here? I’m sure none of the other networks have made on on-air goof or had a typo on a screen crawl… Yeah right!
What worries me most are phoney reports of global warming with Polar Bears in supposed distress or NBC’s notorious distortion of flooding when reporter Michelle Kosinski was in a row boat…in ankle deep water! The single most hysterical moment in television news was when two guys walk by…
Or how’ about when NBC’s Dateline aired an investigative report on Tuesday, November 17, 1992, titled “Waiting to Explode”. The program was about General Motors pickup trucks allegedly exploding upon impact during accidents due to the poor design of fuel tanks. Dateline’s film showed a sample of a low speed accident with the fuel tank exploding. In reality, Dateline NBC producers had rigged the truck’s fuel tank with remotely controlled explosives. The program did not disclose the fact that the accident was staged. What else have these disreputable people staged?
I find this stuff a lot more troubling than a stupid graphics error.
TV news has degraded to the point it’s really not a credible source of information anymore. The average age of a Fox News viewer is 60-something. It’s over.
You can always count on the left coast crowd to start the age bashing – for people who are against bigotry, bullying and bias one statistic regarding Fox News brings out the name calling and the hate. It is a fact that Fox news brings in the most viewers.Maybe they are all over 60. Maybe that demo is growing. But if I were running and sponsoring a network I would look to how many are watching – especially in an age when people are living longer, working longer, voting more often and when the 60+ crowd has more disposable income.
If I didnt like Fox I would try to beat them at their own game – I would not sit back and bash them every time their name came up in conversation. Just makes you look juvenile. FTR I thought Fox one advantage is that their evening news is an hour instead of a half hour. They have more time to give to coverage, and they are half way into their show before the network news comes on.
Fox beats the crap out of all the other news network everyday I don’t see why it would be any different now.
All the liberals always have an excuse as to why Fox is #1 and I find them all very amusing, thanks for keeping me entertained. It’s almost like Letterman on Leno, one keeps winning while the other one keeps talking.
Btw, how long before we find out that AC faked it all ala Dan Rather back in the 80′s jk
If you were really answering this question without bias, Al Jazeera’s English channel coverage has been by far the least bias and has the highest integrity in coverage. Also, they have the most activity and best coverage by far: leaving all the U.S. stations in the dust compared to what they are capturing on camera.
You Fox haters are so predictable. If you weren’t so pathetic you would almost be amusing.
Fox is the most watched because they don’t play the blame game. They just report.
Lets just hope that this leads cable companies to add Al Jazeera English. Al Jazeera has more bureaus than all of ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox News and CNN. Al Jazeera English has the best coverage. This maybe their “CNN” moment.
You are kidding, right?
Considering the magnitude of event’s unfolding all over the middle east, how can anybody fail to raise their rateing’s by covering the story ?
Media Matters a soros funded website created to take down FOX..nice try.
I think CNN has been great on Egypt and was great on Tucson. A lot of times, it’s the only channel with live coverage of huge news. I like MSNBC’s politics, but it’s too broke to put on anything but prison docs on weekends. Fox seems to pinch pennies by putting on talking heads instead of news. CNN replays the same footage over and over, but at least it has some good footage.
Need to Know (PBS) had an interesting segment Friday that showed what’s happening in Tunisia, Yemen, etc. and an interview with a pretty good Egypt expert b
Aaronsch your over simplifing Jon Stewarts formula. If you’d watch you’d know he does not take any clip out of context Infact his whole show is based on putting things in context. He catches people saying something on camera then completely contradicting themselves on another clip. Your using Bill O’Reilly’s analysis of the daily show. Stewart makes fools of the 24/7 news networks and hypocritical politicians so to completely disregard the genius of the daily show is a huge mistake. few others take people on the left and right and try to hold them accountable for the rhetoric bullshit they spew on a daily basis(much like your post) Il chalk it up to ignorance on your part. Don’t call the daily show snarky, again, your foolish to over simplify it. You want snarky check out Bill Maher. I dig bill maher but he can he snarky. Watch Jon Stewart in a debate and you’d see how calm and cool his rationale is. Wise up Aaronsch your embarrassing yourself
Venkman, your unabashed love for Jon Stewart is noted. But I hate to burst your “progressive” bubble…I’m not embarrassed one bit for not seeing things your way. It never ceases to amaze me that the elitist playbook is enlisted whenever a big time “liberal” runs into someone who disagrees with their point-of-view. Rule One: talk condescendingly and/or attack the opposition’s character or intelligence. Rule Two: Try to sound like you are being critical of others in your camp while staunchly supporting them.
You may truly believe that I “completely disregard the genius of The Daily Show,” but I have watched Mr. Stewart enough times to understand his shtick. Anyone with an informed critical eye knows that Mr. Stewart takes comments grossly out-of-context at times for comedic purposes. He mugs the camera and makes a snarky comment. That is fine. But please don’t try to tell me that this guy is anything more than a comedian with a liberal-leaning agenda. That would be ridiculous (wink).
By the way, anyone who “digs” Bill Maher I cannot take seriously. There are few liberals with a greater penchant for elitist behavior.
I’ve read in some media blogs that MSNBC’s on Egypt news coverage has fallen to third place. CNN Pulled ahead of them. That’s going to shock Ed Schultz who has the name viewers like 180,000 which hasn’t changed. Where he boosts on his radio show his show ratings gone up. Bet Comcast is now paying attention to MSNBC to see who they can axe next?
The one story I found interesting in the news coverage out of Egypt is the that journalists got arrested by the Egyptian armed forces. I read in one blog where an ABC reporter was threatened with beheading. This reminds me of Vietnam,World War 2 where any war correspondant puts themselves in harm’s way. For some journalist it’s hard to report the facts from the ground in a fluid sitution as this. By the way Brian Williams and Katie Curic didn’t stay for very long for they got out too. But a number of Fox reporters have stayed behind,a reporter from Bloomberg, the Washington Post has stayed behind to get their stories.
I’ve watched BBC News coverage on BBC America early in the morning beside the other networks I’ve watched. I’ve watched Al Jeerza Engish on Link on Direct TV for a full half an hour last week too. But to watch this crisis from news from several geo perspectives is interesting too.
