Fox has picked up animated comedy American Dad! for a seventh season with a 22-episode order. “This is fantastic news,” said Roger the Alien. “But you do realize I’m not real, right?”
With the renewal, Fox now has all returning comedies from its Sunday animated block locked in for next season. However, because the order for American Dad, now in its sixth season, came in late and because Fox has 2 new animated series on deck for next season, Allen Gregory and Napoleon Dynamite, the network is expected to air only portion of American Dad’s 22-episode order during the upcoming 2011-12 season, running the remaining episodes the following season. This has actually been the airing pattern for American Dad all along, since the show’s premiere after the Super Bowl in 2005, with each of its seasons usually spread over two broadcast cycles.
The 20th TV-produced American Dad, which centers on ultra-conservative, staunch GOP supporter and CIA agent Stan Smith (Seth MacFarlane), was co-created by Seth MacFarlane, Mike Barker and Matt Weitzman who are exec producing with Kenny Schwartz, Rick Wiener and Nahnatchka Khan. Upcoming guest voices for this season include Anjelica Huston, Elisabeth Shue, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Burt Reynolds and Cee-Lo Green.

Awesome news. “American Dad” is a show I grew to love. It started out OK, but around Season 3/4 it became the best show Mr. MacFarlane is responsible for. The characters are funny. The one liners are funny. And the plots are coherent.
“Family Guy” still has at least 1 laugh out loud moment each episode, but it relies way too much on cut away gags lately. It seems like it’s 10 mins of episode and the rest cut away gags. The gags were good before (Especially before the show was canceled), but now they are often ridiculous. The last 2 weeks have been better, but “American Dad” is funnier and has been for a few seasons.
I just wish FOX would move it out of that horrible new timeslot.
Which staff writer are you?
I don’t write for the show actually. But it looks like you don’t write for any show yourself.
Especially since you have decided to use the now cliche “Deadline” comment (that appears in nearly every post) that accuses someone who praises anything here of being close to the production.
For fans of the show, this news has been long awaited. Maybe it’s time you realized that your cynicism will ultimately get you nowhere in life.
Again, I’m glad the show is returning.
But REALLY. Deadline IS a site that is read primarily by folks in the “business” and who else would take the time out of their day to write comments like these except for those who have a vested interest? The comments that talk about time slots and ratings….does the layman fan really know which show is performing better in which demographic at what times? On every Deadline story comments section, it is pretty easy to see through some of these comments and decipher which are fans and which have more of an “interest”.
I think just having read the content of the comment from B-, I’d assume this person isn’t likely a writer at all.
I don’t think “Industry” folks give audiences full credit. People now pay attention to the 18-49 demo ratings because TV Networks are so trigger happy these days that any show you love can be in danger of cancellation. People know when a timeslot is bad. Look at fans of “Fringe”.
People who watch television are into ratings numbers just like people who watch movies are into 1st weekend gross. It’s how it is these days.
I have been a fan of this site for a few years now. I am not an employee of Newscorp/FBC or work for this show. But I do work for a network. And I do look at random demo ratings for 65% of my day. This show happens to be one of my current faves. And back when Deadline posted that the show still hadn’t gotten a renewal, many people were curious if it was returning. Especially given that it also ended up in the Bottom 50 list of shows 18-49 this week.
Finally, remember this site is also used as a source for MANY other sites who post news from here. You are bound to get all sorts of people visiting and commenting here now. It’s no longer unique to the “Industry”.
I’m not in the entertainment industry, unless that’s what we are calling politics nowadays.
Love American Dad! Family Guy not so much and the Cleveland show should of never been made!!!! Thank GOD Seth
That’s surprising considering fox dropped it in the 7:30 slot in favor of Bobs Burgers but good news for Seth I’m sure his new 100 million dollar deal will bring him happiness and booze
Huh. Shouldn’t it actually be funny?
Seems fox is using AMERICAN DAD like it did KING OF THE HILL – a show with steady ratings to use as 7:30pm Sunday filler.
At least the show is somewhat funny … that Bob’s burgers crap is HORRIBLE. Why FOX!? WHY!? Is everybody else sick of the same old formula of low concept drivel? Set in a workplace or family setting? Let’s see something funny but different! Sure if it’s not broke don’t fix it… but take some risks and for God’s sake get some writers who are fresh, new and know how to be funny!!!!
love this show; bout the only quality show fox has going for it; gonna wait to see how i feel about bob’s burgers.
It’s about time. This is one of the most underrated shows on TV. The writing is superb and each episode is chock full of jokes. I was confounded when they picked up Cleveland but made American Dad wait as Cleveland, while a fine show, is one note compared to Dad.
Congrats to American Dad! One of the few funny animated shows that tells a real story. They take the old sitcom story and put a their own twist on it. And it’s got heart which is rare for these animated shows. Great to see that it’s finally being appreciated!
It’s about time! That show started off shaky as a replacement for Family Guy’s cancellation… and then quickly was able to stand on their own two feet. NOW, it’s very different from Family Guy, and especially Cleveland. Save for MacFarlane’s timely comedic acting.
But AmDad is my favorite. It’s just a different show you know? It’s great. It actually tells a story from start to finish, and doesn’t bounce all over the place. The animation & colors are my favorite out of all the comedies on television.
Kudos!
I’m sure I will be crucified for this but I go on the record as saying that American Dad IS funny and well written. I disdain Family Guy, Bob’s Burgers and (wretch) The Cleveland Show. Mind you I didn’t want to like AD but I think it is better than what’s out there save the mighty Simpsons.
Easily the worst show on primetime television today.
What! Dude you should check out Rules of Engagement, Pretty Little Liars, The Cleveland Show, Better With You, The Defenders, and Gossip Girl and you will get a new appreciation for American Dad.
I hate that Rules of Engagement is lumped in there with those others. It’s not their fault that they have to deal with the unfunny, unbelievable character played by David Spade. If it weren’t for him – the show would be perfection.
It only got dropped to the 730 time slot b/c it’s like the oldest sibling. It can fend for it’s own. There’s NO WAY Bob’s Burgers or Cleveland could survive at 7:30…
AmDad used to get great ratings when it was sandwiched in between Simpson’s and FG… then it was moved to 930 to give newborn Cleveland a shot… now it’s bumped even more to give even Newer-born Bob’s.
The middle child syndrome.
American Dad is horrible not nearly as funny as Family Guy. And Cleveland is the worst of the bunch. Quagmire should be spun off he’s the funniest character to have his own show. Giggidy Giggidy.
The Cleveland Show is the second worst television show on TV after “Bob’s Burgers”
A Quagmire show would be another “Flo” or “Enos”. He’s a highly entertaining character in small doses, not someone who can support his own show.
But I do agree about AmDad and TCS and BB. All of them are terrible. McFarlane should look into making AmDad and TCS 15-minute shows like on Adult Swim.
And Fox should look into making BB go AWAY.
American Dad quickly moved up from worst of the Sunday block in its first season to the best in every season that followed. Very funny writing staff all around, the Christmas episodes have been especially noteable.
The Christmas shows are UNWATCHABLE. They are the worst thing AD has ever done. They make no sense, they have overly convoluted plots (if you can even call them a plot) and rely on bizarre recycled Rapture jokes year after year.
American Dad is best when they do traditional stories. Whenever they have tried to reach, it ends up turning in to a mess.
100% agree. The Christmas shows are awful. Incoherent and unfunny. The Family Guy Christmas special this year, however, was great. That is the only show our of the whole lineup on Sunday that is consistently funny, where it seems like someone is paying attention to story and continuity. You may not like the humor, but it is alway solid, consistent and clear. Cleveland is a big fat mess and American Dad – well, I like it when the stories make sense but some of them are just awful, like the one where Steve tries to destroy a kids Bar Mitzvah and the James Bond ripoff one was the worst. Instead of Cleveland and every other character on American Dad, FOX should just do a Roger spinoff. That character is the only reason that show is still on my tivo.
I really love the Christmas shows! I think they’re awesome!
Yeah I gotta disagree with that but to each their own.
How many of these comments are written by writers on “American Dad”?
Haha Too many AD writers posting on this article.
Let’s face it, the writing on American Dad is lazy. Every week it’s the same plot – Oh Francine I’m sorry I let you down I still love you blah blah blah.
Also, this is a show that centers around a right winger who works at the CIA, yet manages to do almost ZERO political commentary week to week. Insiders say that this is largely due to the very very young writing staff that is more in to reality TV and youtube than say fine films, books or newspapers.
BUT – There are some great jokes and the animation and gags can be the best of the three shows. And to their credit, the AD writers do not have Seth MacFarlane helping them at all. He is merely voice talent on this show.
You have to admit that Roger Smith is probably one of the best animated characters to come along in a long time and you have to give the writers their due for that.
I’ll keep watching.
How many are written by scorned King of the Hill and Bob’s Burgers writers?
Bob’s Burgers is the worst show on television.
It’s certainly the worst PrimeTime animated show on TV.
sorry, i’ll revise my statement.
YAY, AWESOME… NEAT!
or
THAT SHOW SUCKS!
There, now I don’t sound like a writer for the show.
I admit, when American Dad first came on I thought it was terrible. Now its my second favorite prime-time animated series right after South Park. I’m glad its renewed.
Yayyyy! Awesome! Love this show! Seth is the best voice over actor in Hollywood!
I actually DO work on the show… and that picture of STAN IS OFF MODEL!
Someone fix it!!!!
AWESOME!!! I LOOOOVE AD. I swear, FOX treats it like its redheaded stepchild. The show is by far the best show on the Animation Domination block, yet it gets ZERO advertising from FOX. The most I’ve seen our the billboards they put up a few month back when it was syndicated. And NO, I’M NOT A WRITER FOR THE SHOW. To me, the show got really great around Season 4. But man, stupid haters. Can’t someone actually just LOVE a great show when it comes along without being ridiculed? Get a life, douches.
Gay Alien = HILARITY! ENOUGH SAID!!! KEEP IT GOING!!!!
AD is awesome – I look forward to it more then any other Fox show. I’ll just repeat what most have said here: it’s like Family Guy but funnier and with an actual story line.
