After lengthy development, FX has handed a pilot order to Powers, a drama based on the graphic novel by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming. The project, written by Charles H. Eglee and to be directed by Michael Dinner, is a police procedural set in a world where superpowers are relatively common and centers on two detectives, Christian Walker and Deena Pilgrim, in a Homicide department that deals with cases involving “powers” (people with superpowers). Powers, from Sony Pictures TV and FX Prods., is slated to begin casting immediately for a spring shoot.
Dinner, who is under an overall deal at Sony, has been the driving force between the project. Eglee came on board to write a new script late last year, after a stint as an executive producer on a very successful cable series adaptation of another graphic novel, AMC’s The Walking Dead. (Journeyman creator Kevin Falls was previously tapped to write the script.) In another Walking Dead connection, the company behind the AMC hit, Circle of Confusion, is attached to executive produce Powers alongside Dinner and Eglee.

Both Dinner and Eglee have history on FX. Dinner directed the pilot for Justified and serves as an executive producer on the FX series, also produced by Sony. Additionally, he co-directed with Allen Coulter the pilot for FX’s flagship series Sons of Anarchy. Most recently, he helmed the network’s pilot Outlaw Country, which remains in contention. Eglee was an executive producer on FX’s first signature series, cop drama The Shield.
The pickup for Powers comes on the heels of FX’s pilot order to Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk’s American Horror Story.

Sweet, hopefully it gets a series order.
Hopefully this goes to series.
I don’t care what anybody says, shows about super powers are dumb.
Nothing worse than a bunch of whiny characters complaining/ and or dealing with powers that make them better than EVERYONE ELSE. I prefer stories where characters actually have to use their brains to get themselves out of situations, not their magic fingers.
That’s not drama, it’s just lazy storytelling.
You sound like a very ignorant person.
You sound like you should be getting me coffee…
The most popular story in the world has to do with a guy who can walk on water and turn said water into wine. Character and superpowers are not mutually exclusive.
Really? Using one’s imagination to move past the rules of reality is lazy storytelling? Because I find when executed with intellect superhuman/supernatural/scifi stories are much better stories due to the complicated metaphors about the human condition that these genres afford. And who says these characters don’t use their brains? Good genre storytelling (a lot of what is now on TV) only changes the rules, not the logic.
In other news, Powers is a cop show in a world with supers, so the same rules apply with a twist. Shows what you know.
Anytime anyone can magically wave their arm or their dick to get themselves out of a predicament is LAZY!!!!!
Actually, Powers is not your typical superhero thing.
At least as far as the book is concerned, it is a cop show, not a superhero book.
The cop and crime aspect of it is the focus. It just happens to take place in a world where super powers exist.
Hating something before you even know what it’s about seems pretty stupid, if you ask me.
Well then you should like this because the main characters of Powers are just plain cops, not super-heroes, who deal with crime in a city where there are superheroes and villains among the populace which makes their job more difficult. In fact if you replace the word ‘superheroes’ with the word ‘celebrities’ you’ve really got how this police procedural comic works, they’re ordinary detectives who get involved in high-profile cases, the fact that there are super-powered shenanigans afoot within the crimes is just a gimmick.
But I will admit that this project has taken far too long to get made and may have missed the boat in terms of coming across as fresh and original with a mainstream audience who are tiring of superhero tv shows.
This will never go to series because the guy behind it, Dave Alpert of Circle of Confusion has bad mojo. The people he has wronged in this town will unite and bring it down. Super hard. Watch.
what r u talking about?
dave is a fantastic guy who deserves nothing but success
“A Tree” got that right, as Alpert is arrogant and somehow managed to marry someone smarter than he is that makes him usually look good. There are far too many pilots this season depicting cops in supernatural infested cities, so this comes too long after the fact. Also, FX has been off its game for quite some time. Nobody’s watching “Archer” (a spy spoof, how original) and their “Red Dwarf” ripoff from the “Reno 911″ anti-geniuses tanked, so some changes need to be made in the executive suites. I’ve seen and read more about “Portlandia” than any FX show.
This is what FX has become. I’m so tired of reading about the lame direction they are in. Whatever happened to groundbreaking and provocotive television? Whatever happened to basic cable’s version of HBO? How many projects can one network have from the same ole, same ole peeps. What a missed opportunity.
I concur,
Time for FX to clean house.
Justified is just about as bad as it gets. Olymphant deserves better.
I love Justified. I also loved the Soprano’s. That’s my taste. Justified rocks.
You sound like one Angry Film dude. perhaps you’re a little jealous?
There is nothing to be jealous of. Unless having no honor and not being able to sleep at night provokes jealousy. That is Dave in a nutshell.
I like all the people involved and FX was hoping for it to be made like for a couple of years so good luck to them, but Eglee has to stop with this latino/mexican stuff he is putting in every show he is touching.
yeah. Latino and Mexican stuff makes me mad. Why would anyone want to see any reference to the U.S.’s fastest growing population in a show? Especially the U.S.’s fastest growing tv audience. Eglee is so dumb.
I actually agree. too much mexi/etc. “for the sake of” “to try to be cool and edgy.” hahahahaha.
Yeah. Agreed. Good point. Is he trying to be cool and all street cred? Puleeeeze.
As a long time powers fan starting on the infamous issue 37, and as a film/adaptation fan I am *so* happy for both bendis and oeming that this finally has gone to pilot order.
Its a cop book first and foremost. A dam good one at that- coming from a family full of cops- I got all of them addicted to the book. For those above who are trashing the superhero elemnt as a “lazy bit of story telling” you obviously never read the source material. The superhero element actually makes the story more complex.
I would really love to know if the series is going to take place in a nameless city or be set in cleveland as part of all of the early bendis story telling.
I would say either go pick up the soure material (particularly the first story arc-”who killed retro girl”) or give the show a chance before trash talking it. Being at the same home as “the shield” even further makes me feel that this will be as popular (if not more so) the “walking dead)
Do you work or know somebody affiliated with his show? Your response to his comment came from a place of hostility not creativity. Good genre story telling on tv now? Is that what you said? Are you kidding? Like I said, do you work or know somebody affiliated with this show?
If they have any loyalty to the comic’s fan base…..Brea Grant should be a lock for the lead female role.
What does even mean?! Racist much? Jeesh
Didn’t they do this show already? It was called Heroes and ended up getting canceled by NBC.
Really?Outside of both having superhumans, they have nothing in common. And Heroes lasted 4 seasons. If Powers even lasts 3 seasons, I’ll be happy.
I’m hoping they stay true to the book also…I always pictured a live version of the book being like “the shield” with a tiny bit of “rescue me” and some superheros.
Oh and spaced- you couldn’t be more off point about this show. Its a cop story first and foremost. They just happen to investigate the deaths of superheros.
I could *maybe* see hayden from heroes as zora or retro girl two…maybe. I think they would be best off by casting unknowns for walker and deena and put named actors for the captain and the re-occuring hereos like zora.
Hmmm.
Alpert is a clown and no one gets why they are in business. It’s always about them and their producer deal.
They take advantage of ignorant clients who don’t know better. They are in business because Lawrence Mattis in NY either doesn’t know or turns a blind eye to their unprofessionalism. There are many buyers who are very upfront and will not buy from them. Do you think they tell their clients that?
Tree in the Forest … sounds like you know a lot about Alpert/Circle and obviously aren’t a fan … since we’re all anonymous here, feel like sharing a bit more?
How do they take advantage of ignorant clients (which probably describes any newbie writer breaking in)? Are you serious that there are legitimate buyers who will see a good/great script from Circle and NOT BUY it because of this guy Alpert? How does Lawrence in NY keep them in business?
I’m not coming at you as a hater, but as a company, they have a great rep for writers, so since you’re comfortable with what you’ve said already, care to share more?
Alpert could be a baby-eating space lizard but it still wouldn’t matter because FX gets to say in gheir ads that this show is “from the executive producer of The walking Dead.”
I find this comic writer Bendis a bit on the unbearable side. Read an interview with him
last year where he kept comparing his work on these dopey comics to Paddy Chaevsky over and over. Weird. Wasn’t he the original pilot writer? Is that why this took two years?
You must have read an odd interview as Bendis comes off as pretty self-mocking most of the time. And the guy is a HUGE talent (if a little too dependent on his Mamet thing.)
The original material makes a good premise for the series, but the writers will have a challenge on their hands: make it stand out on a backdrop with other series with similar features (No Ordinary Family, and such.
Looking forward to see what they come up with.
Agent’s Assistant. I get it. You don’t like my work. Message received. Now, do you need to post comments about it every week?
Really happy to see Powers getting a chance for recognition. It’s the first book I give people when they want to learn about great comics, and it’s outside the Marvel/DC stable of marketable super brands. There’s a reason that Bendis has been able to refresh Marvel: he’s a visual storyteller that constantly surprises and takes chances. Can’t wait to see what they do with this, if they stick to the “seasons” as they’re written, then season 3 will blow your mind.
I have to agree with michelle- you must have read an old interview interested obsever- and one probably from the comic side of things. I have had the pleasure of meeting both bendis and owming a few times and they couldn’t be any nicer gentlemen. Bendis is usually tounge -in-cheek when doing interviews for comic fan websities. The fans of his work (daredevil, powers, jinx etc) know this.
As far as his “dopey works” – have you actually read any of his books? Powers and alias (which is the basis for ‘aka jessica jones’) are nothing but valentines to film noir. (Heck with alias the opening sequence is a direct nod to the opening of ‘chinatown’). Dopey? Seriously? I even question if you read a * single * comic book in your life. Ifyou have you would see a lot of these books (superhero or not) are just a reflection on society—
Just like tv shows and movies.
No idea where the hate is coming from. Fx continues to make quality choices with justified, archer an even the underwatched lights out. Powers is an original indie comic property that easily translates to tv and will being a walking dead size audience to the net. Can’t wait for this one
A bunch of talentless scum patting each other on the back.
Good for Alpert but seriously a little humility goes a long way. Toning down the macho act/sexist remarks wouldn’t hurt either.
JUSTIFIED is fine storytelling for tv for chrissakes! Based on Elmore Leonard!!!
You know? He’s kinda influenced Quentin a bit.
Popcorn entertainment with more drama than a lot of the network crap.
Tim O is great on this show, because the story world and characters are
solid.
And ARCHER is more than adequate on its own as well.
This is a scary time for television. Adaptations, Remakes, and sequel are renewing the movie business. So I’m a skeptic when it comes to adapting graphic novel Television. I believe FX produced 2 new shows. (Terriers/Lights Out) I think FX should about salvaging one of them.
Why are you dumping on a new series you have not seen yet. Their has been nothing new apart from walking dead that grabs you how can any new series be knocked till you have watched it. As for hating on the guys putting It together jealous much now shush let’s see a pilot first
FX really needs to retool their brand after the failures of Terriers and Lights Out and these were EPIC FAILURES in the ratings department they really need to take time to consider looking before they leap. Their main demographic is young males and here they are making a show about a over the hill boxer with dementia and financial problems.
Now I’m hearing they might reuse holt mccallany as a candidate for Walker????? Are they looking to tank another show. Worst casting choice ever. They need to take time to cast a young hip guy like Tahmoh Penikett or Josh Holloway. SOmeone FX’s fans will respond to!
If they can’t get casting right and a big budget that this show would need this is going to be a piece of garbage and us fans of the comic will boycott.
FX this is your last chance. You lost me at Terriers.
