As I often say, I have enough trouble dealing with the scoundrels in Hollywood movie and television industry (and those awards) that I can’t possible take on the crooks in the music biz as well. But feel free to comment on tonight’s Grammy Awards if you must.
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

“Do we care?”
No.
I normally don’t care too, but Arcade Fire won Album of the Year. That is HUGE! I was totally shocked. Never thought the Grammys would honor an Alternative band with the biggest prize of the night.
So, so happy for them. They totally deserved it. Best album of the year, indeed.
Next time, the award should go to Radiohead when they release their new album. Those guys deserved it since OK Computer (best album of all-time).
Again, congratulations to Arcade Fire, deserved it.
no more a shock than when Hancock’s “River” won a few years back. but yea, Suburbs is a good album.
just please stop with the Radiohead crap; they haven’t been “Alternative” since 1994 and are anything but under-appreciated.
Kid A isn’t ‘alternative’?? It’s far more left-field than the Suburbs.
Why don’t you tell us what you mean by “Alternative” and then we can decide how dumb your comment is? As for being under appreciated, depends. They’ve certainly got critical acclaim, and a large and loyal fan base, but they don’t win all that many awards. I think they’ve won a few Alternative album of the year ones, but I guess you’d take those away since they’re all after 1994.
There’s more talent showcased in three minutes of a Grammy show, than in all of this year’s feature releases.
Music is king!
I wish there was a better balance between this being an awards show and a performance show. I don’t want to see 10 awards given out and all performance, this is the extreme.
I used to be in rock radio back in the 60s and 70s. While the labels were bad then, they don’t hold a candle to the disaster that is today’s recoding industry: suing kids for downloads, coprporatized music that has resulted in some of the worst music in decades, suppression of Indie music .. lying cheating stealking … the list goes on.
The only thing more utterly useless than the Grammys are the MTV Video Music Awards.
At least the MTV VMA’s don’t take themselves remotely as seriously as the Grammy’s do.
Boring, slow show, too long, questionable performances, apart from Eminem and Bruno Mars, (god that kid can sing). Tired of CBS dragging out their lame sit com stars who have nothing to do with the music industry to introduce acts they have probably never heard of. Some of the performances were particularly terrible, Streisand being possibly the worst, if I pay her will she finally f*ck off and retire as she’s promised 100 times!
Streisand was pitiful. So sad.
I know she’s almost 68 & the voice goes, but this was really terrible, she couldn’t carry a note, her voice was wavering.
She needs to face up to it & not sing live again. A recording in a studio is probably fixable.
Streisand was bad, but Bob Dylan was way worse (so was Usher). And I know Dylan is a legend and I give him his props for writing so many brilliant classics, but his voice has simply left the building. And Gaga looked like she was lipsyncing.
When has Dylan NOT been a terrible singer?!
Never been a “singer” in the traditional sense, no, but in the 60′s there was something about the quality of his voice that was strangely in keeping with the tenor of the times and the messages in his music. But now, it simply sounds like he’s gargling with gravel.
I think she was carrying the tune, but her voice just isn’t strong enough now – or the mic wasn’t turned up loud enough. I noticed several other performers with the same problem – subdued.
In addition, she hates performing live – you could see her nervousness.
Why was Babs there anyway? She wasn’t nominated. Did i miss something? And why give her a performance slot that could have gone to one of this year’s deserving nominees? Over the worship of her.
Actually, she was nominated for Best Traditional Pop Perf (losing to Michael Buble) and she had been honored the night before as the MusiCares (the Grammy’s charitable offshoot) as Person of the Year. Kris Kristofferson’s intro didn’t make that clear so it seemed like she appeared out of nowhere for absolutely no reason. It was a bit of a stretch of a reason, but, whatever.
And yes, agree…her voice just isn’t what it used to be. She wasn’t horrible (like fingernails on a blackboard) but if you’re used to what it was, then this ain’t it. Shit happens. People age. Women, especially, take a hit on their voices because of the hormones changes their bodies go through. Just about every woman singer shows some voice deepening and a loss of range as they age.
Streisand was nominated for best traditional pop vocal album. She had as good a reason as anyone else to be there. Check your facts, buddy.
I felt sorry for her. She was obviously very uncomfortable, I wonder if she was sick? The amplification wasn’t very good, but maybe that was for the best.
Sorry, Bruno Mars was TERRIBLE. The song he chose to sing (“Grenade”) was FAR outside of his vocal range – I was embarrassed listening to him.
I’m not sure whether that song or Bieber’s entire set was worse. Seriously, does anyone really think Justin Bieber can sing well on anything that is not mixed in a recording studio?
Why is Grayson Chance not up there? That’s a kid with REAL talent!
Bruno Mars looked like a high school kid trying to do an imitation of Jackie Wilson, but with only one-third of the range and one-tenth of the talent.
I thought Mick rocked the room. He showed the youngsters how it’s done. Some of the wins (Lady Antebellum) were total surprises, some deserved IMO and some not.
Eh. I have better things to watch/dishes to do. Music is a big part of my life, but the Grammy’s don’t matter to me.
Congratulations to Arcade Fire. Well-deserved win.
ARCADE FIRE!!!!!!!! WHOOOOAAAAA!!!! THE INDIE KIDS RULE!!!!!
Can’t wait to see who wins classical album of the year. What time does that come on the show?
Everybody wins!
in other words, no
I enjoy music but the Grammys bore me.
Yeah, the show sucks but I am thrilled Esperanza Spaulding won best new artist. She is brilliant.
She’s great but how is anyone with more than one album a “new” artist?
I am an award show junkie and I couldn’t care less about the Grammys these days — it’s all about the questionable talents of these manufactured pop stars.
The Arcade Fire wins Album of the Year = the headline nobody expected to read tomorrow morning. Greatest band working today.
The only stars that have any talent are Lady Gaga and Katy Perry.
LOL! Good one!
Seriously, Lady Gaga’s “talent” consists of dressing funny and ripping off about a half-dozen Euro acts who’ve never been seen on this side of the Atlantic. (She really IS this generation’s Madonna, huh?)
And Katy Perry’s “talent” stops at her neck, if you know what I mean and I think you do.
For arguable the Music worlds equivalent to the best of the best, the core value, core reason for it being held, being the sound was just awful.
In many ways reflecting the problems with the Industry as a whole, perhaps hole, too much emphasis on poor presentation and very little on good quality sound.
There will always be the argument in art of style verses content, but if you can’t hear the music, this debate becomes meaningless.
As a Grammy holder, I experienced first hand the great job done by so many, only to be let down by the poor job done by a few.
Get the sound together or stop trying ..
The sound wasn’t the problem with more than a few of the performers. I saw Bruno Mars pull the mic back several times after coming off sharp and flat on many of his notes – it’s a singer’s “trick” when you can’t hold your notes.
only comment is thank you for honesty Ms. Finke. lol!
WOW ARCADE FIRE!!! Best winner ever!
well deserved win by arcade fire, that should put pop tweens away for a bit, i hope.
I never cared about the Grammys. The only time I watched was when Gorillaz performed. (I’m a long time fan of theirs.) Other than that, the Grammys are stupid and a waste of time. They always nominate and reward overrated people who don’t deserve the recognition, such as the Jonas Brothers, Katy Perry, and Justin Bieber. While that’s happening, the more talented little-known artists are ignored. (Maybe I just have a different taste in music compared to the “always relevant” Grammys. After all, I stopped listening to pop radio and switched to indie, underground, and oldies music.) The performances are also a joke. They come off as cheesy and they never hold my attention.
Another award show where rich people in the entertainment give themselves prizes. Nothing wrong with being successful in life, but these award shows are grotesque.
With everyone tweeting from inside the Grammys and during the east coast feed, no need to watch. -lose.
Hey, an old Billy Crystal movie on kcet — win!
Best vocal performance of the night — Jennifer Hudson in that Aretha tribute. That girl can SING, and effortlessly! Bruno Mars also sounded mellifluous.
Most puzzling spectacle — CeeLo and Gwyneth Paltrow. He looked like the bastard child of Elton John and Big Bird, and she … well … ??? What in the HELL was she doing with her boney ass on top of that piano? And why does she insist upon believing she is now a singer? She has already destroyed her initial career, so I assume she is now shooting for number two.
The Aretha Franklin tribute was incredible!!! Everyone of those females can sing! U see Rhianna wasn’t asked.
I do care but…
most of the show was boring.
Justin Bieber… oh the agony… “baby, baby, baby” I changed the channel right then to watch Family Guy.
Happy for Fantasia winning for the song “Bittersweet”… best R&B female vocals
I disagree, it was one of the most entertaining shows. A lot of those acts I didn’t know, like the Mumfords….I think Dylan should retire his voice is shot. Mick was in great form.
I don’t care who wins, but as awards shows go, this is my favorite. It has tons of performances and puts artists together who often don’t appear with each other. I’ll take this over the emmys or oscars anytime.
I stopped watching after my friend’s song lost to “Don’t Worry, Be Happy,” by Bobby McFerrin.
Omg rolling stones guy far out.
Omg Christina can sing.
Omg bob dylan omg.
Omg Christina fell!
SHE CANNOT SINGGGGG!!!!!!! she has proved twice (super bowl, grammies) why she shouldnt be put on public television. Her face makes singing look painful, and she holds every syllable way too long. the other women in that tribute were much better.
