SUNDAY AM UPDATE: Hollywood movies continue to underperform domestically since the start of the new year, including this weak weekend when the film industry honors its best 2010 offerings at Sunday’s Oscars. Talk about a reality check! Here are these Top 10 North American box office numbers:
1. Gnomeo & Juliet 3D (Disney) Week 3 [3,037 Theaters]
Friday $3.1M, Saturday $6.3M, Weekend $14.2M, Cume $75.1M.
Who gnew that in its 3rd week of release, this 3D animated toon would rise to #1 at the domestic box office? Gnoone! Because last night when I updated box office, studios were still saying it was behind Hall Pass. But there’s a dearth of family films at the box office and those Saturday kiddie matinees continue to be great gnews.
2. Hall Pass (New Line/Warner Bros) NEW [2,950 Theaters]
Friday $4.7M, Saturday $5.7M, Weekend $13.4M
Owen Wilson went on Leno accompanied by a clip from his past hit movie Wedding Crashers – and then had to hawk this weekend’s unsuccessful Hall Pass. Interesting how New Line has done well with its string of estrogen rom-coms, but then returns to its old formula of testosterone male-bonding films and falters. Had it stayed in first place by the end of the weekend, it would have been the lowest grossing #1 in two years. Hollywood expected this Farrelly Brothers comedy to pass $20M and instead the pic greatly underperformed. But not for lack of trying. Warner Bros marketing campaign attempted to leverage the R-rated concept and the Farrellys’ past successes and the newbie/vet comedy combo of SNL‘s Jason Sudekis/Owen Wilson — but failed. Challenge was positioning the pic primarily to men but also not turning off women. Trailers were paired with Due Date back in November, and played on comedies including Little Fockers and The Dilemma. But TV was the main driver on the usual high profile sports events. Online media was broad and male and specifically targeted, culminating in a Red Band trailer that debuted February 18th on IGN, and eventually seeded on other age-appropriate sites. An original Funny or Die video starring Owen Wilson hit the internet the following Monday.
3. Unknown (Dark Castle/Warner Bros) Week 2 [3,043 Theaters]
Friday $3.8M, Saturday $6.1M, Weekend $12.4M (-43%), Cume $42.8M
4. Just Go With It (Sony) Week 3 [3,544 Theaters]
Friday $3.2M, Saturday $5.1M, Weekend $11.1M, Cume $79.3M
5. I Am Number Four (DreamWorks/Disney) Week 2 [3,156 Theaters]
Friday $3.1M, Saturday $4.9M, Weekend $11M (-43%), Cume $37.7M
6. Justin Bieber: Never Say Never 3D (Paramount) Week 3 [2,810 Theaters]
Friday $2.7M, Saturday $4.1M, Weekend $9.2 (-31%), Cume $62.7M
Paramount is gushing about what a “great success” its Director’s Fan Cut debut turned out to be. The new version will do $9.2 million this weekend, down only 31% entering its 3rd weekend. And the studio said the cume for Justin Bieber: Never Say Never by next weekend will surpass Disney’s Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana concert movie which finished at $65.3M domestic. The point of Paramount’s Insurge Pictures one-week limited release was to goose box office across the U.S. and Canada with 40 minutes of new Bieber footage on RealD and 3D Digital Screens in theaters beginning Friday. Interesting way for the studio to squeeze out more grosses so soon after the pic’s opening. Then again, these tween concert pics tend not to have long legs. ”We’re looking to keep the momentum and get a 3rd weekend,” a studio exec emailed me in advance.
7. The King’s Speech (Weinstein Co) Week 14 [2,386 Theaters]
Friday $1.9M, Saturday $3.5M, Weekend $7.6M, Cume $114.5M
8. Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son (New Regency/Fox) Week 2 [2,821 Theaters]
Friday $2M, Saturday $3.7M, Weekend $7.5M (-54%), Cume $28.5M
9. Drive Angry 3D (Summit) NEW [2,290 Theaters]
Friday $1.6M, Saturday $2.2M, Weekend $5.1M
Summit stresses it had U.S. rights only to this Nic Cage loser and didn’t produce it. So studio reps let me know in advance not to expect much of anything from Drive Angry 3D at the box office this weekend. But rival studios starting Friday night pointed out that its paltry take could well be the lowest 3D opening ever. (And the pic was even shot in 3D, too.) Summit acquired the American distribution rights to the film from Nu Image Films and the producers on the project. Based on the dismal pre-release tracking, no one expected grosses above single digits even with 3D’s higher ticket prices. Meanwhile, Nic Cage’s career, once flourishing film career complete with an Academy Award, after this and Sorcerer’s Apprentice remains in freefall. Time to become a TV actor.
10. The Roommate (Screen Gems/Sony) Week 4 [1,726 Theaters]
Friday $625K, Saturday $1M, Weekend $2M, Cume $35.9M

Gnomeo and Juliet has some excellent legs. 100 million is a sure thing. Maybe 120 if all goes well.
The film itself is actually not scoring too well with audiences or critics. It’s only about perfect scheduling – this pic has no animated competition and is collecting all the families by default.
This means there will be a sequel for this, and that they will pay for people with talent next time around, which is a good thing.
I’ve seen it, and it’s an entertaining family film. not bad at all.
it probably cost one third of a Pixar or Dreamworks film and will get a similar box office.
they sure deserve it.
My son asked if we could leave halfway through. I was very pleased he did so, it’s one of the worst films I’ve seen in a long, long time.
Not surprised that Drive Angry is going to flop big time. It looked terrible. Any movie with Nicolas Cage is bad anyway.
Any recent movie with Nicolas Cage is bad….Adaptation was a great movie and he was awesome in it.
Sorry I really liked Season of the Witch. Refreshing subject and great visuals.
Yeah, such a refreshing subject. Witches and magic. …
Impressive holdover for Gnomeo! And WOW to Drive Angry bombing. Team Farmer & Lussier are pretty much DOA I guess. Audiences saw that hot mess and skipped it.
I’m shocked at the low numbers for Drive Angry. A Cage movie that was promoted to extremes in some places going so far as having Amber Heard on British original Top Gear as the big guest. So regardless if it’s good or bad people would go to see it.
Actually my family and I saw it and we loved it. Had alot of one liners and it was hilarious. We want to buy it when it comes out on video. I’m glad they didn’t show all the good stuff in the trailers like some do and then when you go see the movie you already saw it in the trailers. The only bad thing is, most people don’t know how good it is then.
What an astounding run by “King’s Speech” — a period film set in England that probably few people thought had a chance to do anything special. It all starts with story and the script to this movie was fantastic. The acting took this great story, rendered awesomely on the page, and raised it to awesome heights.
The lesson here is that a GOOD SCRIPT + GOOD ACTING can deliver boffo box office and critical acclaim. ( ‘The Fighter’, by comparison, just had the GOOD ACTING part down, unfortunately, and that’s why it is fading in terms of its still considerable box office/critical acclaim)
Kudos to all involved in ‘King’s Speech’… looks like they are in for one terrific and special Oscar weekend … If only this movie’s success inspired Hollywood to make similar quality films. Unfortunately, the pipe line is filling up with breathless, ennui-inducing comedies such as ‘Hall Pass’
Go figure!
i loved king’s speech, it’s my vote for best picture, and hall pass was hysterical. a complete blast. with so much terrible comedy out there we’re lucky the farrely bros came back to the party. i have the number for a great proctologist that can take that stick out of your ass (don’t worry he takes uninsured)
@ Bobby
I’m all for good acting and writing, but there are plenty of movies that have those and don’t make a dime.
P.S. With the flop that is ‘Drive Angry 3d” is it possible that Nic Cage’s career is in unrecoverable free fall?
Cage can’t buy a hit, even when his movies seem like they ought to pack butts in the theater. He’s had some duds in recent years. Maybe he should have jousted for a cameo in ‘Hangover II’ or anything to infuse his moribund career with some energy. (At least Cage has got a hot wife, though, so good on him in that department. I’m sure he sleeps well at night, with nary a worry in the world!)
Why won’t he just do a comedy! It’s so frustrating to watch Cage keep returning to this same dumb well when we’ve seen he can do comedy.
Nicolas Cage sleeping well at night? LMAO! The guy owes millions upon millions to the IRS! The only reason he’s doing one horrible movie after another is because he pissed all his money away on bad investments and multiple European castles and expensive cars and never paid taxes. He’s working around the clock to pay off the IRS. Though I do wonder why, when he supposedly makes $20 million a movie, he hasn’t been able to quickly pay off his debts. Something is very awry in the whole mess. And don’t me started on the game people play now whenever a new Nicolas Cage movie comes out – it’s called WTF Is Up With That Wig?
The marketing folks at Summit are clueless. They took credit for opening the ” Twilight ” series.
My 6 year old could have opened those movies.
When faced with a challenging movie, they actually show their total inability to come up with the right marketing campaign.Time to clean house..
“Drive Angry” is such a bizarre and unique film that it’ll definitely have an audience well past this release. Saw it last night with maybe a half-filled house, had no idea what to expect and people really, really loved it. It’s a lot more “Wild at Heart” (yeah, wasn’t expecting that) than the commercials led me to believe. William Fichtner deserves a damn Oscar for his insane performance.
I was definitely surprised by how much I liked the movie.
it will have no audience.
I agree. I LOVED it…hopefully things will look up a little bit for it. So much fun in the theater!
From what I read by the critics, it’s a very campy good movie, but the 3D kills it. Producers made a bad move with the 3D….people are burnt out paying $5 more to see 3D. When these movies are released to DVD and stream online, who’s going to put on 3D glasses to watch them? It’s idiotic all the 3D just to get more money….
As for Hall Pass — can somebody explain how Owen Wilson is a $15 million man?
I heard Driver Angry was pretty good!
Wow, horrific numbers across the board. Then again, with the exception of “The King’s Speech”, is there really anything in that group worth paying $12 to see?
Hall Pass=Ed Helms=mediocre=Rob Corrdry=David Wain=Horrible TV and movies.
The times we live in.
Seriously Mr. Sheen, you need HELP!
I foresee television sitcoms in Nicolas Cage’s future very soon-he could replace Charlie Sheen in Two and a Half Men. Oh wow, did I just type that?
I’m very surprised that HALL PASS didn’t open bigger. I saw it in a packed theater last night and it killed. Owen was hilarious!
Same here. It was crowded at the theater and we all had a blast!
I love how there’s always packed houses for these films that bomb. I guess all the other theaters were empty.
Hah! Always notice that, too, but even when the commenter hates the movie. Wonder if the Deadline posters are disportionately New Yorkers and Los Angelenos where even something like “Season of the Witch” has sell-out crowds during Sunday prime time even if it might be playing for just the projectionist somewhere in Iowa.
most likely shills, when was the last time you saw a good movie in a packed theater and ran home to get on Deadline Hollywood and tell everyone what a good movie in a packed theater it was
shills have destroyed these comments sections
Hall Pass is for guys only. The concept alone eliminates it as a date night choice.
I don’t know even one woman who wants to go see it. I’m about as eager to see it as a frat boy is to watch a chick flick about shoe shopping.
those Gnomes seems to have longer legs than anyone could’ve predicted.
esp for gnomes..
All those tween girls are seeing Justin Bieber again, because The King’s Speech is rated R.
Yowza!
Can’t say that I saw that (“Drive Angry”‘s non-opening) coming.
It’s a fun, unapologetically “R”-rated movie that’s as much of a ’70s grindhouse homage/throwback as anything Tarantino ever spit out. The major problem with the movie is that every scene feels like a cliff-hanger/climax, so it never really builds any tension or momentum. But I enjoyed the gratuitous sex, nudity and violence, and Fichtner steals every scene he’s in.
Nic Cage is done 5m ow with 3d prices…pathetic flop
I really liked Hall Pass. It was hilarious. Hopefully word of mouth will help it.
Is Nic Cage done? Or was that one of the worst marketing plans ever?
It looks like a bad movie, but then Summit is marketing it, and they seem to be completely incompetent at marketing anything.
Wow, that is a terrible, terrible slate of movies.
It’s a movie called Drive Angry 3d. That’s why it tanked.
Terrible title for the Cage movie. “Hey, anyone want to go see Drive Angry 3D?”.
Owen Wilson as a leading man doesn’t work. Regardless if the movie is good/funny, people don’t want to see him. Especially with that haircut. His drawl and puppydog innocence was funny 15 years ago. Now it’s sorta annoying and pathetic as a man in his 40′s.
Somebody in Hwd thinks he’s worth a $15Mil paycheck.
Ahh Nicolas Cage…King of the Walmart DVD bin
LMAO Nic Cage. What a joke you are!
I actually screened Drive Angry 3d, and although Nic Cage was the worst part of the movie, William Fichtner and the girl, pretty much carry the movie. Fichtner comes off as pretty funny when his character’s not supposed to be. Also, unlike most 3D, I can say that this movie did pretty good with it. Several times through the whole thing that things fly out of the screen.
However, the plot stinks, and it’s one of the loudest movies I’ve ever seen.
It was a guilty pleasure of a movie. If you can’t see it for free, probably wait for DVD.
I think maybe with the escaping from hell bit, Nic Cage is maybe testing the waters for a Ghost Rider 2? Probably not Nic, it’d only flop like this movie.
Ghost Rider two – already in production
@john lucas – Ghost Rider 2 – already done filming, actually.
With Rango and Mars Needs Moms coming out, I’m afraid Gnomeo won’t make it to $100 million. I would like to see it hit that mark though.
Also, Nic Cage needs National Treasure 3.
Rango will change animation standards forever, in all respects. Get ready.
You mean it will change the current standard for appealing, well-designed characters?
The animals in that movie are repulsive. Even Depp can’t save them.
“Rango will change animation standards forever?” How? By lowering them? The trailer is plain ugly.
could be the the weather again where i lived in the Northeast we had bad weather again on Friday
