Warner Bros has issued a new trailer for Arthur, with Russell Brand playing the drunken playboy originated by Dudley Moore in 1981, Helen Mirren in John Gielgud’s role, Greta Gerwig the street smart woman originated by Liza Minnelli, and Jennifer Garner as the uptight society gal he’s engaged to. The Jason Winer-directed redo will be released April 8:

looks alright, probably not anything more than alright
They turned Moore’s loveable happy go luck lush into a moronic man-child that doesn’t know teapots are hot?
*face palm* Sometimes I feel like I’m the smartest man in this entire town, and I’m admittedly not that bright.
The cats really out of the bag after last night’s SNL hosting duties…
Man is this guy NOT FUNNY. You could hear the cast even cringing…
DUDLEY MOORE IS TURNING IN HIS GRAVE!
PLEASE RUSSEL BRAND GO BACK TO THE UK AND TAKE YOUR HORRIBLY MEDIOCRE ATTENTION GRABBING WIFE WITH YOU,FIND A SCRUB BRUSH AND MAYBE GET A JOB SELLING FISH N CHIPS IN PICCADILLY SQUARE!
LUIS GUZMAN AS BITTERMAN—GOD HELP US ALL!
I didn’t see the original, so I have no dog in this race. Having said that, I think the trailer looks….good; not great, but respectably good. If anything is going to make Russell Brand a star in the United States, it could be this film. It *seems* as if the movie is playing up to his strengths; namely playing an immature, spoiled, egotistical man-child.
I agree with the egotistical man-child description, but wouldn’t moving out of that comfort zone provide Russel Brand more star potential in the US? It just looks bad all around, and definitely not worth seeing in theaters. If Helen Mirren weren’t in it I’d say all hope was lost…
Well, I say duplicating the charm and innocence of the original isn’t EVERYTHING that matters. Just cast the shit out of it and say “go at it.” Ugh. What a train wreck.
I have had zero desire to see this but this trailer may have changed my mind
I didn’t think any trailer this year would be worse than The Dilemma, but that was it.
…umm yeah, maybe there should be a disclaimer “Hot Trailer means ‘new’ not necessarily ‘good’…
Looks Awful!
This trailer made me sad for what they’ve done to the genius that was the original “Arthur.”
I was totally gonna come post one word…
SAD
But since you beat me to it Karen… I just have to agree with you.
I mean, honestly, that is the only emotion I feel after watching this.
The real problem is the film is no longer special given the entertainment landscape. The original wasn’t genius, but it was entertaining. But now, when cable TV is filled with people like Paris Hilton and all the useless women who fill the “Real Housewives” series, people who have ridiculous amounts of money and live a life of extreme luxury despite having not earned of dime of it, a new Arthur just seems redundant. Why pay to see this when we can see self-indulgent spoiled brats make fools of themselves on a nightly basis for free?
You have made an excellent point, Dan.
there are some films that just do not require a remake. ‘arthur’ is one of those films. perhaps if the trailer depicted a halfway humorous movie, then maybe i give it a chance on the basis of good, ol’ entertainment, but it looks terrible from start to finish.
maybe there is something redeemable in the movie, but the trailer does not give even the briefest of hints of the possibility.
awful. sorry, dudley.
I saw nothing about the Liza Minnelli character. Is this just a reimagining or an actual remake?
Oh my gosh… I want that 2 minutes and 33 seconds of my life back.
This trailer is a lot of things, but its definitely not HOT!
THIS ISSS AWFUL
Love Russell Brand. Hate that he’s done this.
Interesting that Arthur no longer appears to be an alcoholic and now comes across as a rich fanboy. It’s also odd that they seem to be stressing Arthur’s relationship with Hobson a lot more than the one with his girlfriend.
Anyway, I love the original, but don’t really mind it being remade. I mean, let’s not pretend it’s been enshrined as a masterpiece these past few decades. (It never even managed to get a decent treatment on dvd!)
I think I actually have a bigger problem with the casting of Jennifer Garner as the unwanted fiancee. Hell, even Dudley Moore’s Arthur would’ve accepted that arranged marriage!
Helen Mirren is turning into a not-broke Nicholas Cage, as for what movies she’ll take.
So she’s turning into a Robert De Niro?
Dudley,
We all want to apologize. All of us. This is just awful. Once again, sorry. We will always love you.
Yours Truly,
The World
Garbage.
He’s not a drunk anymore — Mike Fleming might want to axe that from his description.
And it looks like shit.
Trailer for “Arthur” is so-so.
Not a stinker by any means.
Strongest links: Brand and Mirren. Together they lend a respectable comedic flair to this remake.
Weakest link: Jen Garner. Can’t play sexy, or anything else, for that matter. Too bad, because Garner’s part could have been hit out of the ballpark by MANY other far more competent actresses.
Save for Garner, looks like a passable comedy.
i dunno about this. on one side i am taken in by unquestionable russell’s charm, but on the other, this film doesn’t seem like anything beyond russell making wisecracks at his own leisure, neglecting the script. like some people who have commented before me, i have yet to see the original beyond the trailer, but moore actually seems to play a character set within a story whereas russell is playing himself acting off the story, and i think that’s where this will falter… if that makes sense.
What a lot of gloomy gusses on here. I think it looks intriguing, and will probably be quite charming. Plus, Helen Mirren, eh?
LOVE LUIS GUZMAN
Should we just go ahead and make it a law that every trailer has to use “Under Pressure”?
Brand is caught between the moon and something, but it sure ain’t New York City.
