He has had one of the most meteoric rises in cable news. But controversial Fox News firebrand Glenn Beck may be losing some of his appeal. In January, Beck’s eponymous talk show posted the steepest ratings declines for any cable news program. Glenn Beck averaged 1.8 million viewers, down 39% vs. January 2010. In 25-54, the drop was even bigger, 48%, to 397,000. Some of the losses could be explained by tough comparisons to last January, which was one of the highest-rated in Fox News’ history, fueled largely by coverage of the Massachusetts governor race. Still, this is a very steep decline for Beck, who peaked at 2.8 million viewers in 2009, drawing more viewers than all of his cable news competitors combined. Beck, who has been an icon for conservatives and a lightning rod for his critics, has had a rocky ride on Fox News. His highest point came last August when his Restoring Honor rally drew almost 100,000 in Washington, DC. But Beck has also come under fire for his attacking style and controversial remarks, including his 2009 statement that President Obama was a racist that led to in a number of advertisers pulling from his show. As of Sept. 2010, 296 advertisers had asked not to be on Glenn Beck, up from 26 in August 2009.
Also hard hit in January was Fox News’ On the Record with Greta (1.5 million, down 36%; 333,000 in 25-54, down 49%). Other cable news channels with big ratings declines include CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360 (595,000, down 34%; 174,000 in 25-54, down 43%) and CNN’s Parker Spitzer (478,000, down 39% from last year when Campbell Brown was hosting the 8 PM hour; 125,000 in 25-54, down 46%).
TV Editor Nellie Andreeva - tip her here.

But darling Nellie — January 2010 was a big month for the health care debate, if I remember correctly. A big month where people would be tuning into the debate on cable news. Whereas January 2011 was slow news coming off an election cycle. I’m sure someone nerdier will crunch the actual numbers, but you should bounce headlines like these off a skeptic before posting, lest you develop a reputation as a sounding board for someone’s talking points.
Um…who’s watching Glen Beck when there’s a huge Super Bowl, AFC Games and Thundersnow? Seriously, it’s not even a big election year.
Well fox just cancelled his show. Guess the article was right…LMAO!!!!!!!!!
People were saying the same BS about Imus and Opie and Anthony, they’re laughing all the way to the bank. Status and PC based ostracism won’t trump the autodidactic effect the Glenn Beck bump has on its audience.
Yes, we ostrasize Beck because of status…the status of not being a retard. You’re only learning the BS Beck and other Tea bagging puppetheads, so you ain’t no self-made brain, bobo. Ooops, was that not PC enough. Here they come to kick me off my MSNBC show! Maybe I can take Beck’s timeslot over. Or here’s an idea:they could hire Olbermann to cohost, he’s looking to for a job. We’ll call it……Crosstard! Has that been done?
Beck’s show can’t have an “autodidactic effect.” One person/school/medium can have a didactic effect on another, but by definition, “autodidactic” concerns only one person learning for herself, by herself, under her own direction.
Beck calls himself an autodidact, and that’s pretty obvious. His conclusions have never been challenged by another to his satisfaction because he taught himself to know more than everyone else. Puhlease.
I happen to appreciate Glenn Beck. We ALL could learn A LOT from him!
Considering all the basic factual and historical errors he presents as “facts” on his show I doubt there’s anything but whackadoo conspiracy theory that one can learn from him.
But hey, that was one of the few Mel Gibson movies that I actually liked, so Whackadoo along, Mr Beck.
Cable news is a dying breed and so antiquated. The time for them has come and gone. No one wants to come home turn on a so called “news” channel only to see a crazy presenter spew lies in the name of news, nor see people yelling about things that have nothing to do with real facts. It’s a dead media that is fast becoming obsolete, outdated, and truly worn out! It has become a very self congratulatory “incestuous” media business of the New York/Washington DC corridor! Social media rules the roost now! Buh Bye Cable “so called” news…You are so over!
Or are people just reading the same idiocy on Drudge report because it’s cheaper and faster?
And you are “so wrong.” The very first thing I do is turn on Fox News and usually keep it on all day and throughout the evening. You can’t learn what’s going on in the world by tuning in 2 1/2 Men or watching cartoons which is probably why we are in so much trouble. Its been around for over 60 years and Cable is here to stay. Try it; you might like it. And Glenn Beck has a powerful message.
Does it bother you at all that study after study and poll after poll prove that viewers of Fox News are consistently the most mis-informed about a whole range of issues?
I’d rather have people watching 2 1/2 men than going around saying things that are easily proven false (e.g. Fox News viewers overwhelmingly said their taxes went UP under Obama when they, in fact, stayed the same or went down).
And it’s not one study that proves this, but many.
Does it bother you that study after study proves you wrong? You can blather all you want, but you can’t pull stats to prove your point. You should know that no one is believing blather from the left anymore.
I generally don’t believe blather *period*. Facts are easy to check up on; pity Beck & his ilk seem disinclined to do so with an open mind instead of an agenda.
Where are those studies? I would like to read them.
uh, aren’t you supposed to be doing some research? isn’t that what beck tells you to do?
fortunately for him the people that believe his nonsense don’t actually do any. it’s a time tested move. the number of people that believe that they don’t need to because he wouldn’t challenge them if he was lying is remarkable.
so, you know, go do some research.
Lynn, you are the exception! Only a 2.5 million people watch all of the Cable news stations collectively out of 311,998,972 people that live in this country and those ratings are on a good news day. Glenn Beck has some big personal issues as well as issues with real facts. You can get correct factual news without watching hours of non factual vitriol and constant twisting of the facts of the news issues of the day. I see where Fox News programing genre might be controlling your life by all the many, many hours that you say that you are watching. Most people truly have moved on from all that Cable news pablum.
Instead of using the lefts famous “Dismissal Arguments” why don’t you use facts to support your blanket statements. Show us where Beck has been wrong. Show us where Fox viewers are misinformed. Show us a single fact or story where Beck said something that was misinformation or a right out lie. Your arguments are classic but there is no substance to anything you said till you can present supporting facts. Cartoons, cell phones, media in general has made all of us unwilling to take the time and effort to dig and find the truth and facts and then use them in an honest way to discuss anything. This is exactly what we do “I don’t watch so and so because they are so over and they lie.” This line of arguing is a joke.
Here’s a thought-
Try CSPAN if you want to get informed on political issues. Still baffles me that the vast majority of the public requires some pundit to relay results from critical debates.
As far as real news, I dont think there is a major media outlet that will give you anything unbiased, you have to recognize that and blend your sources.
Lynn,
You sound intelligent, and you are absolutely correct that by filling one’s time with meaningless sitcoms, pathetic reality shows and cartoons is not the way to gain insight. Given that, however, to think that the Glenn Beck show provides insight and a “powerful message” is astonishing. I am Canadian and a fiscal conservative. But aside from his position last year on social security reform, the man is a lunatic. Suggestion if I may? Check out all three cable news networks. I do, and than make my own judgements… have a good day
So on social security reform where was beck wrong? Where are your facts? Let me guess its Beck so he must be wrong? Oh I didn’t watch CNN as well as Beck so I didn’t get Balance? This is horrible logic, give us some real reasons why he was wrong on this issue. Show us please.
Too bad you have killed so many brain cells watching Beck. Try reading Ellen’s post again.
Hilarious post. Thanks for making my day. Although taken in good fun, there are still some lame brains who think that Faux “news” is acually about NEWS.
I’m REALLY anachronistic. I prefer to read MY news. You know – newspapers, magazines, that sort of thing. In a concession to the twenty first century, I did fan my preferred commentators and news sources on Facebook, so I get some stories in my feed, but not all reported news makes it into the feed, so I also subscribe to the original printed periodicals.
Another way that I show how old fashioned I am is that my idea of “fair and balanced” news is subscribing to several periodicals, with political biases right, left, and in-between, to get a broad perspective.
You can learn what’s going on by keeping FOX on 24/7. YES! That is SO TRUE, my genius friend! I have noticed however, that what you learn about is only valuable insofar as it relates to the alternative universe where blacks are the racist oppressors, homosexuals want to recruit our children at school, the devil hid fossils in the earth to trick us into believing in evolution (god let him? sheesh), and Muslims are coming, coming I say, to infiltrate our government and impose Shariah law, one convenience store at a time.
But in the non-alternate reality that I like to call “reality”, we have only one existential threat to this nation: it comes from within and it goes by the name of right wing extremism. It is a reality where many of Beck/Hannity/Palin/Limbaughs enemies have to worry about catching a bullet through the brain.
In your universe things are so much more comforting, but you are insane and ignorant. There will be no civil dialogue as long as we have these 2-bit fascists on the air spewing their hate. Thank god our police and FBI (after 2 cops were shot) stopped the man who said, “I was going to the Tides Foundation to kill everyone because Glenn Beck said they are destroying America”. Unfortunately, the Unitarians who were slaughtered in church (during a childrens play) by a man who said “I want to take out the 100 people in Bernie Goldberg’s book” and whose coffee table was littered with Hannity and Beck “books”, were less lucky. I know Loughner was insane, but his Youtube rants about “fiat money”, “grammar police”, and other insane beliefs happen to be the same beliefs expressed by Beck and the other swine in his stable.
There are numerous other cases of murder (the census worker for example) and terrorism (the pipe bomber who believed that the “black socialist muslim” would take his guns) that are are underreported, but none the less amount to right wing media influenced terrorism. You are a terrorist allie.
No one is coming for your guns. It’s the other way around. You are coming for people with your guns.
You truly sound miserable.. or at least the people around you must be.
Cable news has been around for 60 years? Wow… that’s… totally inaccurate! Not too hard to check that math!
You can’t learn what’s going on in the world by turning on Fox News.
Why does it still amaze me how brainwashed you folks are? Come live in the real world. Get a passport and see for yourself how wrong Fox is.
This is so true. People are working. We don’t come home and turn on the TV like we used to, and then to have a big mouth like Beck, Hannity, et al tell lies and twist the truth. We can go to politico or huffpo or NYT to get the truth and the news online. We don’t need talking heads to tell us what to think. Only the weak minded and illiterate watch the BECKS of cable.
Sally: Keep BS the public, the NYT needs all the help they can get.
And you are basing this on what?
If you do a little more research, you’ll find there was actually closer to 500,000 people there. There are also plenty of photos to prove it.
500,000 Tim? You can count as well as everyone there can read and write…
That “almost 100,000″ number comes from an “estimate” from a CBS contractee who was paid by the biased liberal network to fly over the crowd — even the National Park Service, who refuses to give official crowd estimates for such events, dismissed that number as ridiculously low…but libs like Nellie Andreeva keep repeating it. So don’t bother, Tim
sure lets see them
National Parks Service and the local police put the crowd at about 100,000 (and with events like this, those are the most reliable estimates). That’s still nothing to sneeze at; 100,00 people take up a LOT of space.
Ratings aside, Beck’s show has been a money-loser for Fox; no major advertiser will run ads on his show- partly because of an active boycott, but mostly because of Beck’s own mercurial nature- on no less than three occasions, he’s actively trashed his own sponsors and their products on the air, which is the line you do NOT cross.
And, of course, there’s that whole Byran Williams thing…and the very real possibility of more of the same.
70,000 people can fill a stadium to see U2 in the average city. 100, 000 people from the entire NATION to see Glenn Beck?? Big frickin’ deal.
Are your critical thinking skills that low? Apples to oranges here. You’re talking about a group that has been around since the early 80′s vs. a talk-show host who has only risen to popularity in the past few years. Not to mention U2 is a musical act that both dem’s, repub’s, indies and libert’s alike enjoy vs. a guy that only traditionally conservative individuals seem to like. You’re talking about people from all over a state converging on an in-state site to see U2 vs. that of people from as far as California traveling across the country to D.C. for a rally.
I have no love for Beck, none. However; the ability to reason seems to be lost with this one, sheesh.
That figure is insane. Google images of the million man march or other marches on washington and you’ll be better informed. Wasn’t it Beck who claimed there were 500,000? Ridiculous.
500,000? For the lying Father Coughlin wanna be? Another right wing fallacy brought to you by the ‘facts? we don’t need no stinkin’ facts, we got a cartoon view of Jesus and the constitution’ crowd.
Tim, you must be thinking of the Stewart-Colbert rally. Such grossly-inflated attendance numbers for Beck’s Bigotpalooza have long been debunked.
LOL @ Bigotpalooza. Priceless.
Really, in photos you can tell the difference between 100,000 and 500,000? Did you count them?
You mean people are getting tired of the fear mongering maniac compare every leftist to either a murderous dictator or America hating terrorist?
But, he’s so fair and balanced. So intelligent and articulate. A true voice of reason who obviously cares about all Americans. A man of God if there ever was one.
I hope his numbers bounce back. I’d hate to think of not being able to watch those fake tears run down his cherub cheeks while telling me that America is still the greatest country in the world despite the fact that it’s under constant attack from a racist, Socialist, foreign born terrorist named Barack Obama.
The fact is he’s on at 5 PM EST, and his closest cable news competition is lowly MSNBC’s Hardball with 700,000. Beck STILL gets more audience than MSNBC and CNN combined. Just like the article that Nellie copied the report from thehill.com, they still refuse to post the numbers of Glenn’s competition.
The only reason people on the right keep talking about FOX “news” ratings is because they only have one channel to watch. They’ve been taught that every other channel is “leftist”, so you can’t trust them, right?
Trained seals…
@glennbeck Are the people…tiring of you? There’s always radio, just like Father Coughlin – http://bit.ly/ieFMFb (@nikkifink)
Run for cover, Becktards will be coming to defend their queen.
Bring up Becks name and there is going to be the hate speech but i think the question itself is far. When Beck was a radio host and started up his CNN show he interviewed everyone from politicians to authors to American Idol contestants, people from the left and right and the interviews were good, funny, entertaining. But in the past several months he has been on a mission and now his show is pretty much Glen and The Blackboard – plus his is spreading himself very thin with stage shows and books and a magazine etc and you cant do that without having your base – radio and TV – suffer.
Some of what he says is important for Americans to hear imho – BUT – nobody wants to be lectured to and haranged day after day – thats why Dr Laura dropped, why Keith Oberman and the Ed show cant get the numbers. What you want to do isnt always what you do best.
I think you hit the nail on the head. The blackboard. I say this as someone that agrees with Beck on almost all issues, so with that said, the show is almost unwatchable. He has morphed the show into some classroom where he is teaching his troops on how to live a good and proper life through a mix of religion, politics and survivalist teaching. I honestly don’t get it.
I saw one episode where he had people showing you how to can food and he even talked about how he and his wife were canning food. Give me a break. He may have pulled out is unlimited credit card and had the stuff delivered to his deluxe doomsday bunker, but I assure you this guy was not canning food. When would he have time? Good grief.
Frankly, at this point, I tune into his show to see how bad TV can get, because it is pretty bad. His show has become like watching Keith Olbermann. He was another that was impossible to watch and MSNBC has finally gave him his walking papers.
So I think that has something to do with the drop along with the fatigue from the election cycle. Also, the event in Washington would have to be a high water mark for Beck. I still do not know what the purpose of the event was, but I think that would have to represent the peak of his popularity and it is all down hill from here. But he has gotten rich from all this and as someone else said, his audience is twice the competition, so I don’t see him going anywhere anytime soon.
Ditto, total over-exposure. I mentioned it in an above comment, but I’m not a Beck fan, I think he’s a little looney, but over-exposure is the case here I think. You can’t try to dominate every form of media, with the same exact message, and think people aren’t going to tire of you and tune out. He has a new book out every 4 months, and with daily TV and radio shows…it’s too much for even his fans.
On top of that, he’s become his own political magisterium of sorts.
I’m going to go out on a limb and say that the Drudge Report folks won’t be coming to this post.
I hear the sound of your limb breaking…
Parks Department said there were around 300,000 at the Beck rally, CBS news said there were around 81,000, I’ll go with the Parks Department on this one. Check http://tvbythenumbers.com for the Cable News ratings.
Parks Department did not say 300,000. The AirPhotosLive.com estimate that CBS used was the only one that relied on scientific methods (counting the crowd in aerial photos of the rally). The others were just old journalists ballparking it in the fashion that old geezers do.
The Parks Department does not give crowd estimates, so stick that number back in your buttocks where you found it.
To get his ratings back Glenn Beck must turn to his hitler and Nazis rants. Who even listen to this crap?
It’s amazing to me how Beck is called a liar but none of his accusers will actually debunk any of his “lies”.
I will right now.The Lincoln Memorial is not now or will it be in the future Off limits to assembly. He said the date was so important (Not Because the Lincoln Monument will soon be off limits to have gatherings.)He said this might be the last time we will legally be able to do this here. Not because of Trying to step on MLK js.s “I Have A Dream” speech.(in effect Taking Back This Date for WHITE PEOPLE.Without actually saying that,of course.
How can you debunk something that exists only in his mind???
Seems to me that if Beck viewers would do their research, as Glenn instructs them to do, they would discover the lies. But in the very act of telling people not to believe him, but to do their own research, Beck assures his viewers that they needn’t do any research at all, because it would merely support Beck’s wacky version of reality. Do your own research people! The only people that are as loony as Beck all do it for the same reason–to get attention and thereby make money. If one person tells you the sky is falling, but the other thousand refute it, who are you going to believe? The college dropout?
You got it Jules…. I love Glenn Beck and went to the O’Reilly/Beck show in Dallas! A lot of my friends are just now finding about him!
So, in other words, everyone was down. But fewer people would have clicked on the headline if it read, “Cable News Shows Down Across the Board In January.”
This story is laughable. It just shows how information can be skewed to support any particular point-of-view (or wishful thinking)—especially when you leave a whole bunch of information out.
Ratings for Monday, January 31st:
Net 5PM P2+ (000s) 25-54 (000s) 35-64 (000s)
FNC GLENN BECK 2,129 499 1,042
CNN SITUATION ROOM 645 185 309
MSNBC HARDBALL 628 123 237
CNBC FAST MONEY 226 34 145
HLN SHOWBIZ TONIGHT 162 79 105
He beat all of his competition combined! Yeah, right, his popularity is fading.
Net 10PM P2+ (000s) 25-54 (000s) 35-64 (000s)
FNC GRETA 1,716 469 804

MSNBC ED SHOW 740 256 328
CNBC JW MARRIOTT 146 56 54
HLN JOY BEHAR 269 101 137
…and Greta has NOTHING to worry about.
Any idiot who thinks “cable news is a dying breed” is a schmuck and need only look at the ratings during the Egyptian crisis or the coming the 2012 elections.
Years ago, I worked for a small local publication run by a couple of stark raving libs/flower children. They told me back in the early 1990s that Rush Limbaugh’s days as a broadcaster would soon be over because had no listeners and he had no advertisers. Talk about wishful thinking, today, that insignificant publication is gone and Rush Limbaugh is arguably one of the most influential and financially successful political commentators in all media.
And McDonald’s sells billions of hamburgers- doesn’t mean their food is any good for you or won’t give you diarrhea. Come to think of it, FOX News is a lot like McDonalds.
The thing all the Fox News whores forget to consider is the fact that while they may win the ratings wars by spreading fear as an arm of the RNC, the rest of the voting public is getting their news from all kinds of sources, most of which aren’t so overtly slanted in their politics or at the least, have commentators who don’t make it their job to suck up to Republicans and fellow hosts.
Okay, so there is MSNBC to counter Fox. A little less to the left is CNN. Closer to the center are the 3 other networks- ABC, NBC, CBS. Increasingly, younger voters rely on Jon Stewart and Colbert to introduce news topics to them- and studies have shown that these under 35 yr. old viewers who watch these comedy shows tend to get the rest of their news from internet sites, newsletters and old fashioned newspapers/magazines (both online and in print). These viewers also, as a group, are more informed and more educated, particularly when compared to the Fox audience which recently was ranked as the least informed audience when compared to other people who get their news from TV.
On the radio, which I know a lot of people listen to, studies have also indicated the PBS listeners are more highly educated, especially when compared to those getting their news from Rush, GB, etc. The folks listening to Rush and Sean and Beck- they are all swimming in the same pool- that is, they are already extremely conservative and listening to Rush and his ilk just helps to re-enforce their own world views- not saying people who listen to PBS don’t do the same, but the PBS listener is getting a LOT more information about a lot more topics than one would find on right-wing radio, which is obsessed with taxes, government spending and tearing apart health care reform without any alternatives. Demographically, that pool of Right wing audience is getting smaller even if they are more fervent- which makes sense. Don’t believe me? Just ask Karl Rove- he’s said as much many many times- that’s part of why he wanted W to get behind an immigration overhaul (Rove knows the GOP is doomed if they can’t bring in more Latino voters).
Bottom line- Fox news thinks because they scream the loudest to the most people who watch cable news that A- their interpretation and presentation of “news” should be accepted as fact; and B- that since more people watch them than watch CNN or MSNBC, that these TV viewers are the only people who VOTE. In the last presidential election there were almost 130 million votes cast for president. Fox whores seem to think that all 130 million voters watch Fox, when the facts suggest less than 2% of all voters get their news from Fox.
Listen to this- FOX whores- the rumbling of the reasonable middle class who are too busy to listen to nutbags like GB or Rush will turn out in 2012 and elect Pres. Obama in a landslide similar to Reagan in ’84. So keep screaming- 2010 was like ’82 and ’94. In both cases, the sitting President cruised to re-election.
Who did the study? And you don’t think Ed Schultz or Keith Olbermann are nutbags? Didn’t Olbermann call Bristol Palin the worst person in the world simply for speaking on abstinence. This doesn’t strike you as being a little nutty? Also, don’t you think calling someone a whore for the news outlet they watch a little hostile?
The University of Maryland did the study and Olbermann named Bristol Palin in his Worst Person segment for promoting *only* abstinence, a method of “birth control” that has an extremely high failure rate and which puts people who do fail at it in danger of pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases because they are taught to shun methods of birth control that would prevent them such as condoms.
Right-wing pundits/professional assho**s are popular for the same reason as hip-hop is: no shortage of dumb-ass Americans to support the sh**. Big numbers = lots of stupid people.
I agree with Tim. Way more that just 100,000 people attended.
Can’t believe there are that many Lemmings out there!!
Anybody remember Lonesome Rhodes? Glen Beck is just another “Face in the Crowd” …next thing we know he’ll be scratching a backward swastika on his forehead, claiming he was attacked by skinheads… airheads, more likely.
500,000? Gobble gobble, Dude… lap lap….
This is such great news — i used to love glenn beck when he was on headline news but ever since he moved to Fox, it’s like he’s gone on overload and i don’t agree with his strong views.
There was no where near 500,000 people over at Glenn’s. Get some facts.-
Things you won’t here this Beck say
“In the Time of Chimpanzees I was a monkey”
Though he should sing ” I’m a loser babay!!”
Reality check. Yes Beck’s numbers have dropped, but compare them to his direct competition and other cable news talkers. His numbers are good especially considering his program airs at 5PM. He beats most prime time programs running on MSNBC and CNN. He beats liberal goddess Maddow. Perhaps his act is tiring, and yes his numbers have decreased. He’s no longer a phenom, but he still draws a crowd.
This racist, fear-mongering creation of FOX News is the worst entertainer around. There are good people without jobs and this guy is working and getting paid big money. If this guy is considered a political leader, then those following him should really consider what it is they want in a leader. Seriously, a political leader is like a pilot, right? If want a pilot to fly you and your family, you want someone level-headed and professional who can think clearly when the crap hits the fan, right? Would you want this FOXenstein to be flying the plane?
What racism are you referring to. If you’d actually watch Beck you would know his admiration for MLK and Ghandi.
Oh, Tim. Don’t be delusional. The only people claiming there were 500,000 people were the events organizers and its attendees/fans. Trained crowd handlers all pegged it around 100,000.
This could be a sign that the economy is getting better. When more people are employed, the less likely they will be invested in a fringe position, left or right. Gold is also down from last year.
