NBC’s late-night host Carson Daly has closed a deal to host NBC’s ambitious new singing competition series (and American Idol rival) The Voice, from top reality producers John de Mol (Big Brother) and Mark Burnett (Survivor) and Warner Horizon Television. “Carson is the perfect choice to host this exciting new series owing to his credibility, popularity and relevance in both the music world and social media,” NBC’s reality chief Paul Telegdy said. “As he has demonstrated on his late-night show, Carson has the knack of recognizing new talent, which is a key component in The Voice.”
The show, in which contestants vie for a recording contract, is modeled after the Dutch Voice of Holland, which is the country’s #1 talent competition show. It features four celebrity artists who each forms a team of singers that they coach throughout the competition. Contestants will be eliminated until each coach only has one team member left who will compete in the finals to be named The Voice in a live finale. Casting of the coaches is still ongoing, with NBC targeting the series for a spring launch, going head-to-head with Fox’s juggernaut American Idol. “Having worked in the music industry for many years, I am looking forward to hosting The Voice, Daly said. “This is a show based strictly on vocal performance — giving all kinds of talented singers the opportunity to reach millions across the country.”
Daly has a strong music series background, having come out of MTV’s signature show Total Request Live. He also regularly features music acts on his late-night NBC show Last Call with Carson Daly. This will mark the primetime debut for Daly, who recently returned as host of NBC’s New Year’s Eve special. Daly shares the same radio background with Idol host Ryan Seacrest who both started off as DJs on Los Angeles radio stations and now have LA morning drive shows.

at least he’s not as annoying as seacrest and his morning radio show on 97.1fm (LA) is the best thing to happen to LA radio.
“owing to his credibility, popularity and relevance in both the music world and social media”
Didn’t realize we were still in the 90′s, but good to know.
Does ‘Spring launch’ mean that it will launch during the current season like before the end of May? I mean, if casting is still ongoing for the coaches then they would have to super-fast track the project.
Or is it simply going to launch in June or sth?
Carson who?
Just when you thought a TV host couldn’t be more bland, boring, and completely uninteresting than Ryan Seacrest…along comes Carson Daly. Yawwwwn.
Anybody ever see the “Vomellete” stunt on Jackass, where some dude eats a whole bunch of ingredients, pukes it into a frying pan, cooks it and then eats it? Strange how you can draw similar comparisons to this stinker of a show idea.
So basically this is a remake of “The X-Factor” that is premiering AFTER the US Version of “The X-Factor” debuts on FOX in September?
The show is premiering THIS spring 2011 not next. Casting has already started.
It’s not a remake of The X-Factor. The candidates are prescreened and only those who have a shot at the title will get to audition. The auditions are blind, meaning that the judges will be sitting with their back to the candidates. If they like what they hear they press a button, which will turn them around. Depending on how many judges turned around the candidate then gets to choose his/her coach. The coach will be helped by their dreamteam, consisting of songwriters and musicproducers. After the first fase of the auditions the candidates will battle with each other. Two singers on the same team will sing a duet and one of them will be axed by their coach. After that fase the show turns into a normal talentcompetition. But the candidates will occasionally perform with their coaches and in the final with other famous artists.
In the netherlands the show drew two to three times the ratings of other shows. With one of the contestants scoring two consecutive number one hits before the finals.
The appeal of the show is that the focus is on quality.
As for the judges on the American version, they’re trying to get a big country star and John de Mol stated that he got a text asking him: “how far are you willing to go to get Alicia Keys?” to which his response was: “very far”.
He produced the show for a bargain in the Netherlands, actually doing it below cost and problably will be doing the same in the US. The format has already been sold to a number of countries and with around 30 more interested he’ll want to make sure it’s a great succes in the US as well.
Sounds really boring and unimaginative and so 10-years-ago.
This cat has nine lives…
IT’S OFFICIAL…. NO ONE CARES!
On paper it does indeed sound like the epitome of crazy but everyone who’s seen the dutch original version raves about it.
I think it has a biig chance of success especially given it debuts before ‘The X Factor’ and am sure audiences won’t mind checking out a new singing competition that is slightly different from the good old ‘Idol’.
I mean, all these singing competitions are more or less the same but each with it’s own twist. Just like crime procedurals which all claim to have their own twist (and some really do).
Let’s wait and see how it’s done. Am pretty sure NBC will invest lots of moolah hoping to get a hit out of it.
ATLAST! The show the will end Daly’s career!
I remember he was just a San Jose DJ and heard his last show. I was so glad, because I found him annoying for years listening to him. Then it was LA radio and MTV within six months. If he could just be fired from NBC, there may be hope for a Carson Daly-less TV.
Besides Carson bashing, this is another reason why NBC sucks. What a stale idea. NBC has a gift for creating shows that literally make me nauseous. They’re doing this to ‘poison the well’ for The X Factor.
ChaChing. Take dat, Co.
I’m from the Netherlands and as said the show was a huge success down here with around 3 million viewers. (X-factor got about 1.3 millon) Mainly because there were very nice coaches that said what they thought but in a anti-Cowell way. In addition, the coaches could not see the face of the candidates, only hear their voice and hit a button if they wanted that candidate in their team. If multiple coaches hit the button during the performance, the candidate got to choose.
Sounds like this would work in the US as well as long as they don’t do it DURING American Idol.
In contrast to Idols etc. the judges aren’t buzzing someone away, but when they buzz, they show they want to work with the auditoning candidate.
Another key difference is that for the Dutch version 7000 persons were screened and they only brought people who could sing well on stage.
- people who completed music school
- people who themselve gave singing lessons
- backing vocalists
- singers of advertisement songs etc.
- some discovered amateurs in casting rounds who had some skills
- someone who had sung a number 1 hit, but a 1-day fly
- a former winner of Idols who was pregnant raised the child and wanted to restart now
In brief. The level was quite high. To get an idea, who got in, but lost out in one of the next rounds look at these clips:

In reality, if Carson Daly or Ryan Seacrest were ever contestants on one of these silly “talent” shows, they would fail miserably. What is THEIR talent, beyond boring us to sleep? Am I missing something here?
I find Carson Daly very boring, he adds nothing special or fun to the show. He is lacking of stage present, I feel like anybody with no experience could take his place. I actually like Ryan Seacrest better at least he’s making jokes and he’s not afraid to make a fool of himself. The best tv host for me is Tom Bergeron from dancing with the stars. Carson should take notes and learn from the guy. Carson Daly you suck, the show would be more entertaining if it was a goat on the stage instead of you!
