EXCLUSIVE: I’m told that Jackie Earle Haley is in talks to play Willie Loomis in Dark Shadows, the Tim Burton-directed horror film for Warner Bros, based on the 60s TV soap that will star Johnny Depp as Barnabas Collins. At the same time, sources say that Bella Heathcoate is the choice to play Victoria Winters, the young governess of the Collins estate. Heathcote was among the names mentioned for Snow White and the Huntsman, a role which Deadline told you exclusively now has Twilight Saga‘s Kristen Stewart as front runner. The Vicki role was originated by Alexandra Moltke on the original soap.
As for Haley, the Loomis role was a pivotal one on the soap. Loomis is a notorious con artist who comes to Collinwood bent on swindling the reclusive matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard. He winds up living in the mansion and hatches a plan when he observes a portrait of the late Barnabas Collins, who wore some serious bling. Loomis breaks into the mausoleum and pries open Barnabas’ coffin expecting to steal jewelry, he’s given the shock of his life when he’s attacked by the vampire and rendered the servant and whipping boy of the bloodsucker. The Loomis role was played by James Hall and later John Karlen in the original soap. Haley most recently stepped into iconic horror terrain when he played Freddy Krueger in the remake A Nightmare on Elm Street.

You left out the best part about Alexandra Moltke, who played Victoria Winters in the original! Her married name was Alexandra Isles and she was Claus Von Bulow’s girlfriend at the time of his murder trial (she was played by Julie Haggerty in the movie).
you know something more about kristen and snow white tell me please
Jackie Earle Haley is a rockin’ good actor and should complement Johnny Depp quite well.
More generally, with all those hours of the soap to draw on, which direction to go? There’s Barnabas, cousin Quentin the werewolf (portrayed by actor David Selby, most recently seen as a lawyer repping the twins in The Social Network), Angelique the witch obsessed with Barnabas… Come to think of it, Twilight owes a lot to Dark Shadows. I’m guessing they’re already thinking a trilogy.
By the third film, they’ll have Barnabas throwing the i-Ching and going back in time.
How old is she? 15? And a bald Willie Loomis? What are they thinking? And WHY does the revival always get the cold shoulder anytime this filmed is mentioned? They mention that James Hall played prior to John Karlen taking over the role but they couldn’t be bothered to mention that Jim Ffye played him in the Revival? My expectations for this film just keep getting lower and lower.
“A bald Willie Lommis? What were they thinking?” They were probably thinking that actors in previous productions, oh, since the BIRTH OF THEATER, have worn wigs, when playing a character. Wigs are headpieces made of human or synthetic hair, worn on the heads of actors and applied with tape or glue. Some are amazingly lifelike.
He should watch HUMAN TARGET. Jackie has a lot of hair on that show.
I was one of those kids racing home to see the original production and looking back at it now, I see a horribly cheesy production with background music that today makes me cringe. I would love to see this production redeem the original story idea with high quality (a sexy Depp style Barnabas, please) and tombstones that don’t keep falling down. LOL
Haley was great as Rorschach in Watchman. Great to see him getting more roles.
The heart of ‘Dark Shadows’ will always be the incredible gothic horror love triangle between Barnabas, Josette, and Angelique and I hope that’s the premise of this new film. As far as this casting update goes, looks good to me as a long time fan of the original soap (since *ahem* watching it in its first run after school). Wasn’t a fan of the ’91 revival, and can only hope that Burton doesn’t do to DS what he did to ‘Planet of the Apes!” Finally, just want to add that Anne Rice is often credited with creating the vampire with a conscience, but the writers of the original DS soap beat her to it by many, many years.
I’ve seen Haley in ‘Nightmare’. Not very good acting.
Dark Shadows was such a great show, let’s just hope Tim Burton remembers back to the Ed Wood days when a great script really went a long way.
Haley had a poison chalice in Nightmare. The guy’s a brilliant actor – and should have won an Oscar for his astonishing role in Little Children, but the Academy are too afraid to award him in that because of the nature of the character he played
Jackie Earle Haley is awesome!
Haley would be ok as Willie, he seems a bit old, and Bella Heathcote I could see as Josette/Maggie.
Other people they should cast:
Dr. Julia Hoffman – Sigourney Weaver
Elizabeth Collins Stoddard – Stockard Channing
Angelique – Charlize Theron
Roger – Michael Keaton
Carolyn Stoddard – Reese Witherspoon
Trask – Christopher Lee
Please no HBC in the lead, I love her, but she’s not right for any of the leads, perhaps in a small role, I could see her as Crazy Jenny.
I was a huge fan of the original DARK SHADOWS, and was delighted when it was announced Johnny Depp would play Barnabas. That Mr. Depp was a fan of DS as a child himself says a lot. SLEEPY HOLLOW reminded me a lot of DARK SHADOWS, and I hope Tim Burton gives it the unique touch it deserves. I thought of Angelina Jolie as Angelique, although she and Johnny were pretty mild together in THE TOURIST. Anne Hathaway as Josette. Robert Downey, Jr. as Quentin …..
Please tell Burton that DS is a very romantic smooth program and he shouldn’t use kook antics in the show. It was a very gothic dark TV program and I am afraid he’s going to ruin it and make it too, too modernized. Leave some of the mystery. The characters should run deep with emotion. Can Burton pull this off? I know Johnny can.
Who will play one of the most important roles-Josette/Maggie?
I remember turning off the TV whenever Angelique wasn’t in the show on that day. She had a really great role in DS. PLEASE don’t louse up this show!!!
Additionally, as someone posted. The greatness of the show was the triangle among Barnabas, Josette and Angelique. Please keep this in mind. The whole show could have aired with just these three characters! Don’t make this a movie for children. Keep something sacred!! WHO WILL PLAY JOSETTE-I HOPE SOMEONE REALLY PRETTY AND SEXY!
I agree with some of the comments made by Eva. Some of the casting choices, especially the Willia Loomis character, baffle me. Mr Haley seems a bit old and creepy to be playing Willie, who was young and a sympathetic, albeit a bit of a screwup, character. I am concerned that I haven’t heard any casting announcements for the Josette/Maggie character…I sincerely hope they arent’t going to do the same lame thing they did in the 90′s revival series and make Vicki Winters the Josette reincarnation and turn Maggie Evans into a femme fatale sleeping on the sly with…ew…Roger. To so many of us fans of the orginal series, the whole Barnabas/Josette/Maggie et al romances became so important us: Would he find his Josette again, an incarnation of her? and if he did, would Angelique be the spoiler? were certainly central themes, and it would be a shame if they didn’t include that dynamic. We 60′s series Dark Shadows fans would love to see THAT Dark Shadows on the big screen.
I ran home from school every night to view this showing. I loved it then and love it now. Music and all.
