James Franco has formalized his intention to star on Broadway next fall in Sweet Bird of Youth, the David Cromer-directed play that will be produced by Scott Rudin. Negotiations are underway, but both Franco and Kidman are fully committed, I’m told. Cromer last directed Our Town. Franco is Oscar-nominated for 127 Hours and is hosting the Oscarcast with Anne Hathaway, while Kidman is Oscar-nominated for Rabbit Hole.
She also won her Oscar for The Hours, which Rudin produced. In the revival of the Tennessee Williams play, Kidman will play Alexandra Del Lago, the aging voracious movie star, while Franco will play her gigolo paramour Chance Wayne. Just like that, Broadway has another hot ticket. CAA reps Franco and Kidman.

franco is brilliant. has the most exciting career in hollywood.
true story.
Franco is the man! So happy to see such a talented guy in a plethora of eclectic parts whether on screen or in live theatre.
Hopefully they both don’t have to swing about on wires.
I’d go see this. Kidman and especially Franco are incredible.
Any fan of modern cinema acting and certainly any fan of Tennessee Williams should be shaking with excitement…this is very exciting…so exciting and amazing I’m starting to wonder if this will actually make it not fall through the cracks like so many other great ideas (sorry I’m so pessimistic…)
UNbelievable. All the eyeballs will be on this one.
congrats to them both. i admire them very much. this franco character is proving himself rather admirably. good for him. he seems all heart. and what a dream… to be a success in tv and film then head back to nyc to conquer broadway. hmmm… a man dreams… :- )
This will be the hot ticket for Bway like Denzel Washington and Viola Davis was last year for Fences!
And that was a Scott Rudin production as well.
Do you think they’ll have any Pineapple Express to pass around at the show? Or is this serious acting…hemhem. Because serious actors get nominated for serious academy awards, and get serious Phd’s, have classes taught on themselves, and do serious broadway plays. They don’t smoke joints and do daytime television. Obviously James Franco can do everything well.
Is there anything James isn’t doing?
Being humble? Amazingly talented guy but I read he is going to teach a college course about his career. His attitude in those roundtables… *eyeroll*
ME!
Poor Mr.James DiFranco… He stars in a play with Nicole Kidrock… Plays Dirty Harry in Spider-Man 1,2, & 3. Then he cuts off his leg in 129 1/2 hours in hell! The man is a genus! Like Conan O’Brian. But I think he needs to do a rap album like 10ne of Tom Hanks Kidz… Embrace you’re inner theaton James, $cientology can help you to make Disney movies with Demi Lovato! Such a kind man, that Mr. James DiFranco… he left off the Di because of all the Di haters outhere!
Kidman, whose career in film is dead, has nowhere to go but up. And Mike didn’t even mention ‘The Blue Room.’
isn’t she oscar nominated for rabbit hole this year? pretty good for a dead film career
Franco seems to have journeyed out of the heart throb ghetto of his early career into a kind of divinely inspired creative madness beyond anybody’s judgment where talent, intelligence and charisma simultaneously collide in a way that few true artists ever could dream about, let alone actually experience.
I think he knows this.
I hope he understands what a fine line it is to walk. I hope he knows how fleeting it can be. I hope he makes it last. I hope it doesn’t burn him out and he doesn’t fall victim to his own over exposure.
Most importantly I hope he takes care of himself, doesn’t listen to anybody and keeps going and going and going.
I am sorry, but Kidman just can’t act. I am always aware of her “performing” and she never connects with the other actors. No emotional depth at all.
As for Franco, I worry about his spreading himself too thin. The dude looks so tired all the time.
see her movies Moulin Rouge, Birth,The Others,Rabbit Hole…
umm yes, if just you know who nicole kidman is…
I’m amazed he has the time. the more i see james in interviews, the more i like him as a person as an actor. I am so excited to see him host the oscars — feb 27th btw.
everyone should go see rabbit hole — not only nicole kidman’s best performance, but THE performance of the year
What can’t James Franco do? What won’t he try?
In an era of safety and vanilla, this dude goes to school, writes essays, stars in movies, does soaps, directs, does web shorts, and seems to eat/sleep/drink creativity.
Kidman has performed on professional stage only twice (Sweet Magnolias in Sydney and The Blue Room in London and New York) but on both occasions she was lauded for her performance and got nominated for an award. It bodes well for this production.
this is incorrect. she has been on stage several times in her academy years
Sorry I meant Steel Magnolias
“In an era of safety and vanilla, this dude (Franco) goes to school, writes essays, stars in movies, does soaps, directs, does web shorts, and seems to eat/sleep/drink creativity.” Well said Fury. You saved me some typing:)
James Franco is an awesome! He should have won the Golden Globe, and the SAG award, this year for best actor. Colin Firth’s performance was good, but it didn’t top James Franco’s. On the other hand (or arm), Franco’s performance was awesome! He carried the whole film with very little help from his co stars, unlike all the other nominees which had help. Firth should not have won best actor this year for the GG or SAG, and should not win the Oscar. Just telling it like it is! If people want to go “band wagon” and vote for Firth, then the awards ceremonies have turned into another version of Don King boxing, where the clear loser beats out the real winner. I’m voting for Franco for best actor at this years Academy Awards.
I believe James Franco is passing his golden Era this year and for the next few years too.He is clever enough to know that history is made by achievements and real work and not only by being Handsome, awesome and loved by many fans.He is giving an example to be followed by every young man in the world, not only inside USA.
I respect his character, adore his sense of Humor, and always look for his amazing works either movies, plays or whatever he contributes in.God Bless him and leads him more to his dreams.Heis a man who challenges himself to seek his ultimate powers
