EXCLUSIVE: TNT’s Dallas reboot is starting to take shape. Josh Henderson (Desperate Housewives) has landed one of the leads in the project, playing J.R.’s son. Additionally, original Dallas stars Larry Hagman, Patrick Duffy and Linda Gray are now all confirmed to return to Southfork.
The updated Dallas pilot, from Cane creator Cynthia Cidre and Warner Horizon, centers on the offspring of bitter rivals and brothers J.R. (Hagman) and Bobby Ewing (Duffy) — J.R.’s son, John Ross (Henderson) and Bobby and Pam Ewing’s adopted son, Christopher – who clash over the future of the Ewing dynasty while the fate of Southfork itself weighs in the balance. Henderson joins Jordana Brewster, who was recently cast as Elena, the gorgeous daughter of the ranch’s cook who is locked into a love triangle with Christopher and John. Michael M. Robin (The Closer) is set to direct and executive produce the pilot.

Hagman gained worldwide fame for his portrayal of oil baron J.R. Ewing on the original soap, which ran from 1978 to 1991. Following months of negotiations over salary demands, Hagman has finally signed on for the Dallas reboot after verbally committing to the project last week. Gray and Duffy, who came on board late last year, played J.R.’s wife, Sue Ellen Ewing, and J.R.’s younger brother Bobby, respectively, in the original Dallas.
The new Dallas came close to going without a present-day J.R. With Hagman holding out for money, Cidre had written an alternative pilot script in which Hagman’s J.R. is only represented through flashbacks from the original series. Luckily, the producers didn’t have to use it after an agreement with Hagman was finally reached. Hagman is repped by TalentWorks and manager Gene Yusem.

I hope I’m wrong but this has disaster written all over it. Trying to remake Dallas by just hiring lots of pretty faces is not going to cut it.
Pam has done well enough on her own, I guess. But she could still have done it for the fans who made her.
Pam died in the original series … but I guess they could bring her back if all that was a dream.
She didn’t die on the original series… She was burned badley in a car accident and left bobby and christopher because she didn’t want to burden them. Then they did get a letter saying she died but I never believed it, ha ha ha!!! I hope they do an amazing job. I think they need to bring back Dynasty and Knots Landing as well!!! I miss the good ole tv series of the 80′s. At least they are bringing back Charlie’s Angels too!!!
OH NOoo.. your really gonna tick my wife off. I have loved the show from the beginning. They have shown the complete series several times on the back tv channels and I watch it every time.. She fussed that she can almost say what if fixing to happen just by walking by and hearing what is being said.. I will watch it over and over.. I feel that J.R. had the right family values, just went around them the wrong way..Hurry up…
Wrong choice. JR’s son needs a less pretty face and more of a schemer bad boy look.
I remember Josh from DH … he played a bad boy on there. He was Edie’s nephew I think. At first he seems a little young for the role but I did like him on DH. Just looked him up … he is 30! I can’t wait for the reboot.
I don’t really consider this a reboot, this more like a continuation.
Dumb idea. They should have done a total re-boot. Re-invent JR. Everything is now geared for the twilight crowed. sad.
The main characters and actors are 30.How is this being geared to the Twilight crowd? They’re not teens.
If the “twilight crowd” as you call them are not pleasing to you… continue to watch the usual bull**** reality shows that are eye candy to you. At least the twilight crowd learned how to spell in school. Can you spell moron???
Oh no, not again.
They should do a pre-Dallas show like mentioned above. How J.R. became J.R. etc. It would have started in the 60′s and could have a Madmen feel about it!
THAT I like.
As to this re-boot? No thank you.
man, I’d watch that. What a great idea.
You are a smart person! Exactly!!!
They did a prequel called Dallas: The Early Years in 1986, but that was geared toward Jock and Miss Ellie.
In the ’80s novels, it was mentioned that JR was a USAF officer (remember, Jock was a hero bomber pilot in WWII) stationed in Japan in the early-mid 1960s. That would be interesting to see.
.
I remember reading a DALLAS book where Jock sat out WW2,
because he was responsible for providing oil for the war machine.
He felt somewhat guilty about it,
but was satisfied with the knowledge he was helping the war effort in a different way.
My 2 cents.
I thought JR was a USAF officer in Coco Beach, had a stint as an astronaut, and a super-hot housekeeper?
“JR was a USAF officer . . . stationed in Japan in the early-mid 1960s. That would be interesting to see.”
After that stint, he entered the NASA program and became an astronaut, living in Cocoa Beach with a genie named Jeannie that he dreamed of…
YES! A prequel! Teee-X-as in the 1950s!
They DID do a prequel
Yes, I actually wrote a pilot with that exact idea, just for fun. The Ewing boys growing up in the 60′s with a Mad Men feel. I think that would be worth exploring. Any show is all about the writing. AMC seems to have the best shows going.
That’s not a very good picture of the guy. This will be interesting. I only know him as Ashley Simpson’s ex and for being hilarious on “One on One.” Never seen any of his other work.
They need a character actor, not a model, esp to play John Ross. Bobby was always the handsome one to JR’s more mischievous charm… that’s why it worked. D2.0 should avoid making this a 20-something drama because it needs CHARACTERS to sustain it, and, of course, GREAT WRITING like the late Arthur Bernard Lewis and Leonard Katzman brought to the series. Katzman also injected a sense of humor into the show — that’s what made it FUN. If this thing is just played straight — it’ll be tired and serious and will miss the point of the original. I should know. I watched all 365 episodes religiously. What next, a new rock version of the classic theme song? Still holding out hope. The script was decent.
Dallas was great in its day, its just not the 80′s anymore and why try to rehash this in a time where we hate the rich and seek a dopey jersey shore
Intelligent comment
This is a perfect time just like the 80′s to reboot the series. When the economy is bad people want to get away from it all and Dallas took us there every Friday night. We all need an escape and Dallas was it. You might not agree with everything going on but you just had to tune in to see what happened next ! Hagman is up to his old negotiation tricks so it looks like things are coming to full fruition again. Whenever people tune in to re-runs like everyone has done over the past few years and buying DVD’s of the series then you can just say that Dallas never did die – it just took a break! Great to see you all back and this show in its own way helped to shape America in many ways from the way we look at business and how we can shape America by presenting the good and the bad in everyone. It raises the question of how we can all get along but that does not make for good TV!
TOTALLY AWESOME NEWS! I can’t wait.
Dallas – The Depends Years
I was a big fan of the show, and look forward to this. But that was funny!
It doesnt matter who they hire as long as the script is good- if the script is crap it will be a pathetic flop. So hopefully they spend the money on someone with a brain who will make it smart and crazy. Everyone should be alkies recovering or otherwise and bulemic and absolutely obsessed with money while the world falls apart-
That can’t work. Cannot.
Hollywood is so funny–if one thing worked at one time keep bringing it back to do it again. The only thing is these days everything is more lip gloss, less substance like Gossip Girl or something…and that’s what it’ll probably turn into. However, if they can actually retain substance and are smart, the life of an oil man these days would be sort of interesting.
That being said, how JR made it would actually have been kind of cool…if AMC did it.
Lets see, Hawaii Five-O, The Defenders, and now Dallas. Whats next from the recycle bin? Perhaps Hogans Heroes, Mannix, Green Acres, Lassie or The Twilight Zone?
CBS = Cycling Back Shows
CBS … America’s #1 Network … the new Hawaii Five-O is great, hope they can work the same magic for Dallas. Loved that show from beginning to end.
If there gonna hire a bunch 25 year old MTV twits noones gonna watch. They should do a serious show or just forget it.
Shouldn’t Josh Henderson be playing Larry Hagman’s grandson or great grandson?
Why? John Ross was born in 1979, so says the script. Henderson is 31 years old. He’s the right age, just too pretty.
Still not convinced that Dallas 2.0 will work.
The only reason why Dallas 1.0 was good was because of Larry Hagman, who was so good/so ‘bad’ in that role. It’s still a blast to watch all these years later.
Didn’t hurt that there were a lot of sexy women with 70′s-era jiggle, but that is easy to cast. Probably not as much juggle with so much silicone/saline these days, however. ;(
Totally agree. Dallas IS JR and how the other characters reacted to his shenannigans. The new show will die fast, probably like Larry Hagman who is now 80. If Larry Hagman passes on, bless him, there will be no Dallas. Period.
Oh why, oh why do we have to rehash this show? It was terrible in 80′s and still terrible today.
Oh yea, it was so terrible that it ran for 13 years and was #1 in its time slot for many of those years, was a cash cow for the network and spawned many lookalike wannabee nighttime soaps! Get a grip … Dallas was a juggernaut, a phenomenon that had everyone talking at the water coolers and coffee bars the following Monday.
Good News. If Larry Hagman can play the senior part as well as Brando in the Godfather it should be sensational. I think he can pull it off. Linda Gray looks hotter now than ever. I can see Patrick Duffy as an aging Sonny but he’s going to have to dig deep to do it. He may be the weak link.
Cool, like it. JR like the Don out of The Godfather. But don’t agree that Bobby is the weak link. I liked what I saw of his character on the box set of the old series and he looks like the moral force on the trailer of the new series. Got to have the balance of good and bad.
Didn’t JR have a daughter with that young country girl too? Wonder if she will turn up and be trouble.
She was pregnant at her untimely death, but not with J.R.’s baby
The one thing this project has going for it is that TNT is handling it. If it were gearing up for a run with one of the big 4 overseeing “creative” decisions the thing would most definitely suck.
it will just be a dream sequence anyway
I rewatched Dallas when it was on Soapnet a while back, so I am familar with it. It sure has potential for a next gen type of series. The one issue is that while JR had an heir, Bobby’s son is really just adopted. I don’t consider that real family, even though they raised it as an infant.(Though Christopher is related to Sue Ellen by blood, so the two principle heirs are blood related, but not Ewing blood.) Also, JR has a bastard son, they featured in the last few seasons.
I really don’t see how there can be much conflict. The original Dallas was one father, and his four sons.(bonaza, brother karamazov, it’s standard format for conflict) But the new Dallas is two brothers and their respective sons. There something less dramatic about cousins fighting than brothers.
But it will be good to see the original cast reprising their roles for this series. Hope it works out.
Adopted does nto equal family?! What a dope!
Adopted is not really a son? A “real” son is not adopted? Tell that to MY son. The son of my heart! How dare you!
