Kat Dennings has signed on as one of the two leads in CBS’ multicamera comedy pilot Two Broke Girls, co-written and executive produced by former Sex and the City showrunner Michael Patrick King and comedian Whitney Cummings. Dennings is the first actor cast in the project, which centers on two girls from very different backgrounds – Max (Dennings), poor from birth, and Caroline, born wealthy but down on her luck – who wind up as waitresses in the same Brooklyn diner, and strike up an unlikely friendship that could lead to a successful business venture… if they can come up with $250,000 in start-up expenses. After starting off in TV with a breakout lead role opposite Bob Saget on the WB sitcom Raising Dad and an arc on NBC’s ER, Dennings, repped by CAA and Management 360, segued into features, including The House Bunny and Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist. She will next be seen in Thor.

Love Kat Dennings. But -wow- to the continued trend of movie/feature actors jumping onto TV pilots. (Kat, Claire, Zooey, Ethan, etc.) Been following pilot season for the last couple years and yes, you see big time film actors jumping aboard projects here and there but this season does it seem a lot more film actors are jumping aboard pilots more than usual? Can someone wiser comment on if that’s so, why and what it might mean?
thanks for the education.
They’re making fewer and fewer movies.
lack of job opportunities in film? because the film industry will die in 10 yrs?
cmon she’s hardly an in-demand/high profile “feature actor”. i’m sure she would have jumped at the chance to join a potential sex and the city for teens show.
The premise of the show sounds promising. Where will CBS put all it’s new comedies given they hardly have slots to fill? Maybe fridays at 8? That would be a very interesting move. Let’s wait for May.
I had heard this might happen on Monday.
Kat is talented, funny and beautiful. I look forward to this show, even though I am not the biggest Whitney Cummings fan around.
I would assume the idea of a permanent job, a place to go every day, a regular paycheck for however long and working with talented writers and producers with good track records might be the reason. Also the lack of good roles in films, the ability to fall right off the face of the acting planet very, very fast when each day there’s some new talented person hitting town. It’s not bad insurance for a future in films, a relief from the fear of never working again. If the quality is good, and sometimes it is, so much the better. The competition just seems overwhelming and many of these actors are smart to stay in front of the camera and get the experience and exposure, if the material is good. If they hit the motherload so much the better. It’s a real crapshoot but the stigma seems to have lifted.
“but the stigma seems to have lifted.”
therein lies the key.
Was genuinely shocked by this news. Love Kat Dennings – find her to be very funny and talented – but this script was completely predictable and lacking in humor. I understand why feature actors might make the jump to tv (they all have their reasons), but to attach yourself to such a mediocre project is mind-boggling. Hope she is getting a big pay day and they are doing major re-writes.
If you want to sing out, sing out…
Love Kat Dennings.
aside from kat dennings, we learn today that former “It”-girl leelee sobieski is now joining the tv world too to play a cop role.
