EXCLUSIVE: I’m told that there is heightened interest in Kevin Costner for a key role in the Superman reboot that is being directed by Zack Snyder for Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures. Henry Cavill was recently set in the Man of Steel role. I’m not exactly sure what role Costner is likely to play, but he has certainly been in good guy mode lately. Beyond his performance in the John Wells-directed The Company Men, Costner surfaced as an unlikely hero in aiding the cleanup in the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. British Petroleum purchased over 30 centrifuge machines which separate oil from water, technology that was developed with a reported $24 million in funding by the actor over 15 years.
The Superman film is being produced by Chris Nolan, Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, and Deborah Snyder. The screenplay is being written by David S. Goyer based on a story by Goyer and Nolan. Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips are serving as executive producers. The new Superman is targeted for release in December 2012.

ok either Jonathan Kent, but this character cant die or it will mess it all up, or perhaps Perry White that would be interesting
I would love to see Costner play Larry Lane, the father of Lois Lane.
That would be Sam Lane.
Pa Kent, which means another origin to bore us all to death. I bet you Zod or Lex will be the villain again too. They just keep sending Superman in circles, then wonder why everyone is bored sick of the character. Idiocy at its finest.
Works for me…but, the key to this film are not the actors…the keys are Chris Nolan and Zack Snyder rebooting this franchise to the same level Batman has achieved under Nolan’s vision.
So what is the budget for this movie? Spidey is getting rebooted for $80 million. How much dosh are they turning over to Snyder?
Keep in mind this reboot is likely to under-perform the last movie. That steaming pile left a horrible taste in audiences’ mouths. People who feel ripped off are less likely to see the next one. The Hulk reboot added tons of action and was very crowd-pleasing, yet didn’t make any more money than the first film.
Save a horse, ride a cowboy!
I saw him in Othello a few years back and he was brilliant. Oh wait, it was a all dog production of Othello to benefit a local dog shelter and I was thinking of a poodle that was brilliant in it.
Superman vs. Postman?
Jonathan Kent would make sense, Jor-El no so much. KC’s got a definite heartland vibe. They’ll likely cast a Brit actor as
Jor-El — how about Mark Strong, let him play a good guy for once!
Costner won’t make or break this film. He’s a wash. We’re still waiting on the big name draw.
Good for him. Just watched DANCES WITH WOLVES on blu-ray. Beautiful movie. He’s really to be admired always for that film. Its intentions and capturing of a rapidly disappearing way of life (tribal existence, non digital communication) is far more significant in the long run than the coked out glorification of tacky gangsters in Goodfellas, the movie it’s always pitted against. DANCES deserved and WON Oscar. no revisionism necessary.
You are sooo right, jj! I regard that film like one of the best ever. It gets to me every time I watch it – the scope, the vision, the depth. The acting, the cinematography, John Barry’s heart wrenching score: all working perfectly together. A masterpiece, just amazing. Love KC. Respect!
I like him a lot for Jonathan Kent, not sure about any of the other characters (including Perry White), but I guess it depends on how any of those characters (Lex, another villain, or Jor-El) might be written.
how about Kevin Costner as Bizarro…
The guys at the geek websites have spent the last couple of days talking about how much Cavill resembles Welling. Now the movie is casting a Pa Kent who looks exactly like the actor playing the role on Smallville. It certainly IS very odd and notable. Snyder may be using the show as a casting template.
Krypto!!
You can’t judge Mr. Costner on the failures of Waterworld or The Postman anymore. Maybe it was cool, like, ten years ago but it’s like ragging on Ben Affleck for his failures. Move on. JFK, Field of Dreams, Dances with Wolves, Robin Hood (it’s charming), Open Range, Bull Durham… a few of those are considered classics by most of planet earth. Kevin Costner cares about what he does in both acting and directing. He takes chances and challenges himself. He doesn’t pick ‘safe’ projects which is incredibly admirable in this industry. Yes, he hasn’t had a big blockbuster in ages but the man tries. A comeback for him with the mainstream is long overdue and deserved.
Kevin Costner is best at playing Kevin Costner. No shame in that. But it hasn’t been cool to be Kevin Costner in 20 years.
I could see him as Pa Kent – but I could also see him doing a very effective General Zod…a principaled military man, who is also a little bit of a vicious sociopath.
The people who trash Costner are of the same ilk who scratch their heads as to why Zac Efron, Ashton Kutcher or Justin Beiber are not nominated for an academy award this year. If you don’t know who he is, watch Dances With Wolves… no there aren’t any gay cowboys and no it isn’t in 3D and no it doesn’t have massive sweeping CG effects. But believe it or not, it’s a great film that Costner worked tirelessly to get made.
“The people who trash Costner are of the same ilk who scratch their heads as to why Zac Efron, Ashton Kutcher or Justin Beiber are not nominated for an academy award this year”
Someone is blinded by their own bias stupidity.
What happened to Jon Peters producing ???? did he get his money back ???
LOL @ younguns on the internet trashing people who have been around more than 5 minutes. It’s not like your hipster demo is any good, just ask Scott Pilgrim (flop) or Team Coco (booted off NBC). Leave Costner alone, he’s got more dough than you’ll ever make in your life and doesn’t particularly have to act anymore, I’m sure. Costner would be great as Pa Kent. And I also agree NO LUTHOR. And no Zod/Phantom Zone villains either. It’s tired. Whatever happened to Metallo, Mongul, Parasite, Bizarro Superman? Somebody badass to give Superman a hard time onscreen and strain that CGI to the limits. The only way it would be interesting is if Luthor was President like in the comics.
The purpose of the strategy of surrounding your no-name lead with A-listers, is to have stars who can put butts in seats. Costner hasn’t put a single butt in the seat for over 10 years. Anyone not smoking copiousness amounts of crack cocaine will assure you that Costner is no A-lister. Yes, he may be a lovely actor, who will do great in the role, but he won’t sell a single ticket. So now you have a no-name lead, with a name actor, who can’t put butts in seats and you are still searching for those A-listers who will. Snyder, you better be able to pull a Johnny Depp as Brainic out of your sleeve, or you are screwed.
Yeah,I’m going with Jonathan Kent as well.
I’m ok with him as Jonathan Kent but he shouldn’t be Perry White, that should definitely go to Hugh Laurie
i dont understand why they have replaced brandon routh?????? that guy seemed prefect for superman. now we have to see this new face…
this also happened with spiderman… they have replaced tobby with andrew garfield.
disappointed
i pray they stay away from the lex luther role….. HE HAS OTHER VILLANS YOU KNOW! hasnt lex showed up in EVERY superman movie?! bored with it!!…. and let me guess this movie will involve…..KRYPTONITE! BORING! this is the problem with superman and especially filming superman in a nolan universe. superman couldnt exist in a nolan batman universe so…if superman can exist then some of the other crazy villans with powers can and should exist lets not get stuck in “well it has to be a character that could ACTUALLY happen”
Pa Kent, duh.
Kevin Costner is a good enough actor that he could be up for numerous roles, Jonathan Kent, Perry White, Jor-El, or Lex Luthor, he would be good in any of them but Pa Kent would be the best fit.
Why do Lex or even Zod? We’ve seen them in every Superman movie ever done. How about Braniac or Darkseid? Geezus, show some imagination, Hollywood. They keep saying things like reboot or new take, but really all they do is just recast. It’s pretty obvious that Hollywood still does not respect comic books as source material. They crap all over them and it’s only by accident that a good superhero movie gets made. You can count them on one hand. Green Lantern? Ryan Reynolds? Fail (probably). Green Hornet? Seth Rogen!? Atrocity.
Agreed, great post. Green Lantern looks like a disaster. I hate Seth Rogen in everything so him being Green Hornet made me hate him even more (I am a fan of the original TV show.
