Kevin Macdonald has signed on to direct Marley, a film about the late activist reggae singer. On the docu front, Macdonald directed the Oscar winning One Day In September and Touching the Void. Marley is a coproduction between Tuff Gong Pictures and Shangri-La Entertainment and was put together by Chris Blackwell and Steve Bing with full cooperation of Marley’s family. The pic will be released in fall, 2011, timed around the 30th anniversary of Marley’s death in 1981. Macdonald’s next film, the Roman era drama The Eagle, will be released February 11 by Focus with Channing Tatum and Jaime Bell starring.

This could be a great film. Love MacDonald’s work, namely “The Last King of Scotland”. Anyone know who is signed up to script this Marley story?
(Also, what ever you do, Mr. MacDonald, please do not — I REPEAT — do NOT cast Terrence Howard as Bob Marley, no matter how great the temptation might be… Loved him in Hustle & Flow, but he’s lost a bit of bloom with a case of “mumble-itis” in the “Law and Order: Los Angeles” mess)
That said, who would YOU cast as Bob Marley?
A well-known person or a complete unknown?
I think the only guy who fits my mental image and can play is Andre Royo, maybe too old for the part but he could pass and is great actor.
I completely agree on the Terrence Howard comment. I can’t see him portraying Bob at all and it would be a tragedy if someone miscast him in this role. Maybe I’m wrong, but I would like Anthony Mackie in this role. If he can’t play Hendrix, why not Marley? Thoughts?
Oops. I see that Macdonald is helming a DOCUMENTARY, not a biopic. My bad. I read it too quickly.
Jonathan Demme is doing a Doc on Marley and that it has been in the works for at least a year… http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1183919/
I heard that the family is staunchly against any portrayal of drug use. Is this accurate?
I worked in a lab at Columbia with a guy who used to play soccer all the time with Bob Marley. Big fan, can’t wait to see the documentary.
