Piers Morgan brought in his predecessor Larry King on his CNN show tonight to set the record straight over King’s recent comments that Morgan “may have been oversold” to American audiences. “He was going to be dangerous. He was going to be water cooler talk,” King told BBC Radio 4 last week. “He’s good. He’s not that dangerous.”
Tonight, King didn’t backtrack. “Were you being facetious when you said you were dangerous?” King asked. “Was that an attempt at British humor?” When Morgan finally conceded that there was British humor involved, King shot back. “I don’t get it, I’m from Brooklyn. In Brooklyn, if you say you’re dangerous, you better be dangerous.” Here is the full exchange:

Dear God — there isn’t enough bile in my body to vomit the copious amounts that clip deserves.
piers sucks…larry is well..larry…i liked him…cnn has no clue anymore how to package or promote anyone…
Unbelievable. PM complains that Larry said he was oversold and not dangerous. PM then admits he always oversells himself and finds it funny. And when he said he was dangerous he was only kidding really. He then grovels to Larry saying he’s honored and wants to live up to his legacy.
PM is falling apart at the seams. He’s an admitted hack who talked himself into the position and needs to be relieved of his services.
Who should deliver the bad news? How about Madonna. (Since he deemed her unwelcome to the show, but spent his lowest rated hour on the Kardashians)
I have to agree with you. Mr Morgan was over sold and really didn’t deserve to take over King’s spot from whence he came. If you saw the Daily Mirror and particularly The News of the World newspapers, you would know just what I’m talking about. Think Enquirer and Globe magazine on a daily basis and you’ll get the gist. He was thrust into the media spotlight after a few under handed tactics were uncovered, which goes to show, people can definitely bounce back from the brink bigger and brighter proving, there is no such thing as bad publicity.
He’s not the brightest spark in the fireplace either, with a major chip on his shoulder, probably stems from being out of his depth really, and has a pretty dow personality, so fire bombs across a CNN desk aren’t exactly going to be ignited setting an enthralling conversation rolling there. He was best suited for the ITV series in the UK which was titled, Piers Morgan on….which show cased various parts of the world from a multi millionaire’s perspective. I must say, he wasn’t bad in those – or maybe, it was the beautiful scenery that distracted one from him. I’ll have to go back and check!
Anyone stupid and desparate enough to hire someone who was fired by News of the World gets what they deserve. If a low life tabloid like that fires you, you must be pretty low yourself. I thought better of CNN, but not now.
It’s called ‘hype’ and they got on the band wagon following everyone else’s lead thinking they were on a winner, much like the favourite in the ninth at Santa Anita, and now realise they have flopped into a pile of horse manure. You have to be a likeable person to do such, often personal interviews. Piers doesn’t have that, shall we say savoir-faire – ‘you can really trust me cause I’m really harmless’ persona. Why else would they have Larry King interviewed by Piers so early on in his tenure. They realise they have ballsed-up (English idiom for fouled up BIG TIME) and are lamenting King’s dethroning.
Larry obviously didn’t want to retire, but CNN made him. They both stink!
They both are not great. Larry King has more personality as a host but NOT GREAT, oh I already said that!
EXCERPT FROM CUT FOOTAGE OF PIERS MORGAN/LARRY KING INTERVIEW:
MORGAN: “Larry King, or should I accurately say Larry Zeiger?”
KING: “Funny, funny PIERS. Who the hell is named after a dock?”
MORGAN: “Actually, Larry, Piers is my true name whereas King is a
confection.”
KING: “CONFECTION, now the guy is talking candy! PIERS, what’s
your favorite candy? Mine has always been a Baby Ruth.
Nothing better than some seltzer and a Baby Ruth, but some
Poofta from England would’nt know seltzer from dishwater!”
MORGAN: “Tastes about the same, I should think.”
Did CNNN not read Piers bio or watch any of his other shows? If they had read a few old copies of the Mirror when he was editor it would have told them he was a hack and not a real journalist. Piers is dangerous because he clearly considers himself inferior to his guests and doesn’t know enough about what he is doing to have his own style or a vision for his show.
That said, Larry’s “back in Brooklyn…” stuff is older than the hills. Larry probably couldn’t even find his way to Brooklyn anymore.
Morgan is about as dangerous as a pair of fluffy pink slippers. King is an idiot. The pair should team up to form a comedy duo act.
Two old white guys arguing about a show no one cares about anyway. Who is Piers Morgan again?
I have stated this before so here goes again… Pier is a Entertainment Reporter at best, a Mary Hart with a British accent and hairy legs. He can not and never be taken seriously as a news worthy anything… He should actually be Olberman’s warm up act if this train wreck goes any further down the track. Larry King is a King maker and a hard edge real talk no nonsense interviewer so there can never be a replacement for him. It would take Pier 30years and 5 US Presidents to event stay to smell like Larry King.
Piers made Cheryl Cole and Simon Cowell cry. So, he was successful there.
Can CNN trade Morgan for Gervais? Then I’ll watch.
Oh please, now you really are reaching into the bottom of the barrel. First rule of thumb for a decent interviewer – ‘you got to have brains!’
Larry King, clearly hasn’t lived in or been to Brooklyn in a very long time. When people there say they’re dangerous now, they’re making a joke that satirizes themselves as fans of the Michael Jackson album. Then they talk about how awesome they thought that “shit” was was when they were babies.
CNN should have snapped up Olbermann when he became available and then they could have given Morgan a long walk on a short Pier…
Everyone in the UK knows Piers Morgan is a discredited hack and it’s quickly becoming obvious here too. Piers was drummed out of journalism in Britain after:
(a) he ordered his newspaper’s financial journalists to promote stocks he had secretly bought to increase their value and make himself rich – which worked, apart from the financial journalists going to jail while Morgan himself wriggled free;
(b) Printing photographs on the cover of his newspaper depicting British troops abusing Iraqi prisoners, which were later proven to be FAKE, forcing Morgan to resign in disgrace;
(c) publishing a book of his so-called diary that he supposedly kept during his time at the Daily Mirror, but which was quickly proven to be riddled with factual inconsistencies and basically written after the fact and inflated with lies to portray himself in a flattering light (example: claiming to have lunch with Gordon Brown on a day that Brown wasn’t even in the country).
For the reasons above and many more Morgan is a reviled figure in the UK and Brits are happy to be rid of him. Unfortunately it seems he may be back soon as his CNN show is a pathetic joke with even more pathetic ratings. I say Kudos to Larry for telling Morgan why he sucks on his own show and exposing him as the fraud that he is. Watching Morgan squirm was hilarious; I am British and I can tell you that his revisionist claim that his promises of being “dangerous” were just British humor are ridiculous. As usual he arrogantly promoted himself way beyond anything his minuscule talent can deliver and now people can see him for the charlatan that his is. I give the show three more months, during which everyone except Morgan will be fired and replace before someone over there wises up and sees that the real problem is the vacuous hole at the center of the show.
Who will replace Piers Morgan? Seriously. Would love to see Aaron Brown on the air again. Would be interesting to see someone come out of radio – like Larry – who already knows how to interview. Someone in the tradition of a Charles Grodin or Tom Snyder, not another vapid, vacant, tabloid hack.
They have to do something, but CNN will not give the hour back to Larry. It was just pathetic seeing them talk about how Piers took over “the show” – it’s a different host, different set and NOT LIVE but it occupies the same daypart… hardly the same show.
CNN’s biggest mistakes run on: hiring Piers Morgan, hiring Elliot Spitzer, losing Christiane Amanpour, putting all their eggs in Anderson Cooper’s basket… who is going to plug these holes and right the ship?
Cattle call, good one about CNN’s biggest mistakes.
Individually, each of CNN’s mistakes are correctable. However, taken together as evidence of corporate policy, this ship can’t be righted.
Forgotten in the disaster of Piers Morgan is the reason CNN put him there: To fight off the near-fatal attack of Fox cable, that generates triple CNN’s ratings.
CNN will NEVER fight Fox on Fox’s turf-opinionated, edgy talk.
The reason is that Fox has a built-in fan base of right wingers or, as they like to call themselves, “conservatives”.
CNN has no similarly committed audience. They are middle roaders, neither too right nor too left….Republicans Lite.
Piers Morgan, Elliot Spitzer, losing Christiane Amanpour, Anderson Cooper’s oversaturation, are indicative of a corporate death rattle.
CNN can’t outfox Fox with opinion shows. Even King was a ratings failure.
CNN should stick to news. Straight news during the day, mixed with hard edge news shows at night.
I loathe everything Fox stands for. Yet, even I find some of their straight news coverage more entertaining. So, CNN may no longer even have the advantage of being America’s source for straight news.
What’s left, then, for CNN?
Piers Morgan interviewing Larry King, followed by Cooper’s latest showboating escapades?
CNN is the Titanic of cable news. A few years ago, it rammed the iceberg called Fox Cable. It’s recent personnel shakeups are rearranging deck chairs. It’s sinking.
And you know what the irony of it all is?
When it does go under, guess who’ll broadcast it live-Fox News!
FIRE MORGAN – he SUCKS!! big time! – it is unwatchable – even the clip is unwatchable.
Seriously – if this is the best execs at CNN can do -they should go back to their paper routes or day jobs at big Mac
Couldn’t we have found an American to replace an American? Larry King Live was an American touchstone. People from middle America would call in, ask questions. At times it was vapid, but it served a purpose. I miss Larry. I knew I would once I heard they were retiring him. Who gives a shit if he can’t connect with Lady Gaga. Can anyone? She lives in a fucking egg.
Another Leno/Coco-esque situation. Will networks ever learn?????
Piers who?
Piers worked for the Sun for god’s sake. He’s not a journalist, he’s a douche.
Larry was Larry, and his time was going. Why not put someone more interesting than a Simon Cowell wannabe? It’s sick, CNN is moronical.
TThey’re a couple of old white men. Is it really a surprise that they are both BS to the core? PM is making a potentially (though doubtfully lasting) career advancement. He will obviously fail to hold the torch, and inherently go down in flames. Wait for it. Enjoy it.
