EXCLUSIVE: Former That 70′s Show star Laura Prepon will channel racy comedienne Chelsea Handler in Are You There Vodka? It’s Me, Chelsea, a multicamera comedy for NBC inspired by latenight star’s autobiographical book of the same name about her life in her 20s. Prepon has landed the lead in the pilot, written and executive produced by Dharma & Greg co-creator Dottie Zicklin and Julie Larson and executive produced by Handler. It centers on Chelsea Hanson (Prepon), a fresh-faced single cocktail waitress highly opinionated and open about her love to drink and have sex. Vodka, which hails from Warner Bros. TV and Werner Entertainment, marks a return to the multicamera comedy genre for Prepon, who got her break playing witty and confident teenager Donna Pinciotti on the Fox sitcom That ’70s Show. After the end of the show in 2006, the actress, repped by Gersh and New Wave, co-starred on the ABC drama October Road and has done guest stints on several series, including an arc on CBS’ How I Met Your Mother.

Great casting! Laura is a great actress. She’s so funny and she will kill this role.
She’s just like Chelsea only with class, wit and character so I guess that’s good casting.

Chelsea Handler has a ton of talent. If you asked me who I’d rather be in the same room with, her or X (for example, Oprah), I’d pick Chelsea 9 times out of 10.

An ignorant, racist, drunken slut (and proud of it!) gets our culture’s stamp of approval by making a sitcom- and millions of ad dollars- out of her drunken sluttiness.

Whoa buddy. Let’s take a deep breath here. I’m not sure why you’re so bent out of shape over this woman. Have you faced a lot of rejection from these so-called “drunken, amoral, vulgar, slut[s]?” There is a thing in this world called humor, more specifically, sarcasm. Chelsea is not ignorant. Nor racist. A drunk, yes, but who isn’t in Hollywood? Girls aren’t going out getting wasted because they want to be like Chelsea Handler. It’s pretty ignorant on your part to blame the downward spiral of society on a woman who’s main demographic are adults that can make decisions for themselves.
“Drunken, amoral, vulgar, sluts” not my type-so I’ve not been blessed by a rejection. Though if she’s VERY attractive, I’ll take 3 out of 4.
Humor/sarcasm doesn’t excuse the veiled racism behind many of Handler’s comments about Blacks and Mexicans.
“B”, you say Handler’s not racist or ignorant, though you agree with “drunk” and excuse it because everyone’s doing it. What about “slut”? Are you comfortable with this personality trait, too?
Many factors contribute to the downward spiral of our society. By no means is a sitcom about a drunken slut a major one.
You are correct-Handler’s main demo are women who can make their own choices and heartily approve of being drunken, amoral, vulgar, sluts.
My concern is the negative social consequences of a major TV net greenlighting a sitcom that rewards and approves the drunken, amoral, vulgar, slut lifestyle. Impressionable teenage girls looking for role models may watch the show and think: “Being a drunken slut has its advantages and it’s funny. Must be OK, cause it wouldn’t be on TV. Maybe I’ll try me some.”

I love Prepon, but one word comes to mind, “why?”
What’s with the crazy sitcom titles these days? I can hear the water cooler conversation now: “Hey, did you watch that ‘Are You There’…oh never mind.”
“Water coolers” suggest that people actually have *jobs.*
I’ve always liked her. She has a sexy earthy quality about her. Glad she’s getting work.
Laura looks to be in her mid 30′s and Chelsea looks to be in her mid 50′s
And Prepon is a very attractive young woman, while Handler looks like a squinty-eyed man in a blonde wig. She really does. I’ve seen several pics where her hairline, jawline and that mouthful of huge teeth conspire to scream: “My name is Marvin.”
Chelsea freakin Handler. How the hell did she… where did she crawl in from… ? How come she’s on billboards? Do people really like her that much?

Laura is talented but she is definitely (and obviously) not in her 20′s. With so many actresses (emerging and established) in their 20′s who need work, I don’t understand this casting decision.
First and foremost, do you really think that Chelsea Handler would reveal truths about her life on television? 99.9% of what comes out of any comedian’s mouth is for laughs. Not one person on here could, without a doubt, comment on her sex life, that is, unless you are a fly on her bedroom wall.
Secondly, if she really were a drunk do you think she would be a successful comedian and show host? Most drunks are busy drinking and not working and doing book tours, comedy tours, book signings and spending time with family. Which you would know is what she is very bust doing if you took the time to even look on her website or google her.
Thirdly, “racist” is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. Her show employees males and females representing probably 15 nationalities. Last time I checked, when done in comedy, stereotypical satire is really just a way to bring light to misunderstood cultures. If the offended cultures were really offended, I would suppose she would have no guests. Last time I checked, she has the fastest growing history of A and B List stars (of all types) on her show.
If you have such a distaste for vulgarity, they I suppose you have a strong distaste for your own comments and ridicule of a person I am sure you have NO personal connection. Get a life and change your channel if you don’t like it! GO CHELSEA!!!!!!
