Los Angeles (February 22, 2011) – Steve Carell is attached to star in Mandate Pictures’ DOGS OF BABEL. Writer Jamie Linden (Ten Year, Dear John, We Are Marshall) adapted the best-selling novel for the big screen. David Heyman of Heyday Films, Corey May and Dooma Wendschuh of sekretagent Productions, and Steve Carell of Carousel Productions will produce. Mandate president Nathan Kahane will executive produce. Vance DeGeneres and Charlie Hartsock who work with Carell at Carousel will co-produce. New president of Heyday Films Jeffrey Clifford will be running the project for Heyday and Nicole Brown will oversee the project on behalf of Mandate. Plans are to engage a director right away. Lionsgate International is handling international sales on this title.
Carolyn Parkhurst’s novel, The Dogs of Babel, is a tragic yet beautiful story of love and loss. The story follows Paul Iverson, a linguistics professor, who returns home one day to find his wife dead in their backyard. Police rule her death an accident, but Paul is not quite sure. The only witness to her death is their dog Lorelei. In Paul’s grief-stricken search for answers, he endeavors to teach Lorelei to talk in the hopes that he can uncover what happened the day his wife died.
Kahane shares, “DOGS OF BABEL is a passion project for the producers and our company. We have really taken our time to find the right hero for this story. Not only did we get the best actor for the part, but we got ourselves a gifted and invested producing partner.”
Heyman adds, “Steve is one of those rare talents who can make you laugh uncontrollably and at the same time evoke real emotion. We can’t wait to see how he brings the role to life.”
May and Wendschuh express that “From the first time we read Carolyn’s manuscript, we couldn’t wait for the opportunity to bring DOGS OF BABEL to the big screen. We are thrilled to now be working with Steve, who shares our passion for the story.”
Steve Carell is managed by Steve Sauer at Media Four and Michelle Bohan at William Morris Endeavor (WME) Entertainment. Dan Freedman, Mandate’s SVP of business affairs, negotiated the deals for Mandate.

I was intrigued until I read “he endeavors to teach Lorelei to talk in the hopes that he can uncover what happened the day his wife died.”
unless you’ve read the book, don’t scoff.
Gee, I wonder what type of character he will play. Will it be a sarcastic/confused/funny guy with a dry sense of humor who speaks slowly and it bits? Hollywood, please be done with this guy.
Yeah, great description of his character in Little Miss Sunshine!
Steve Carell’s got another good one
Great, Great, Great script!
Sorry, just don’t see Steve Carell pulling this off. Be a shame if casting ruins such a powerful story.
WTF?!? I read the book. It is not a comedy. At all. Is Carell that hot that they would take a book and change it so drastically?
I had the same reaction BarbWire! Not only was this book NOT a comedy, it had that really cruel thing happen to the dog that made me stop reading it. WTF?! is exactly right.
Yeah, don’t know what to say. The book was good but about as far away from a comedy as one could get. This film is going to be a disaster. Carell is all kinds of wrong.
I’m guessing this is Deadlines mistake and that they just assumed it was a comedy because it’s starring carrel and has a strange premise because it doesn’t mention anything about comedy anywhere in the actual article.
No, the script is definitely a drama. Not sure why on Earth anyone would cast him in this role. Probably the only way they could get this long-gestating project in motion (this was set at Heyday/Mandate almost 4 years ago).
Something tells me Carell wants to see how far his dramatic chops extend. Good for him, I think he can pull it off. Hey, if Robin Williams hadn’t attempted the same, we’d never have gotten such terrific performances as “The World According to Garp,” “Dead Poets Society” or “Good Will Hunting.”
I miss every time
I burst out laughing at the description of this. I’m going to hell.
Great book. Great script. Great creative producing team. Corey and Dooma at SekretAgents are a dynamic duo.
Steve Carell has every capability of delivering a deeply engaging A-level performance simply by the fact that he is overflowing with the talent to do so. He just will have to not rely on old tricks.
The “success” of this film, financially, critically, or perhaps both if lucky enough, will be in the hands of its director ultimately. Here’s hoping they take it to someone with vision and meeting with the likes of a Jonze, Gondry, Romanek, or even Webb after hopping off the web.
Looking forward to seeing this one come together… hopefully quick.
sounds like adam sandler jim carrey style disaster.
Sounds like a real blast, not. Mandate is ice cold after their one hit wonder in JUNO. Ck in la is right…sounds like another sandler or carrey misfire, but more like the previous mandate misfire with ferrell!
Hollywood is so pathetic sometimes…well actually most of the time. The King’s Speech involves a linguistics element so now this project has heat since it revolves around the same thing. Just another derivative case of Hollywood idiots unable to think or create something new. Good book or not, this ain’t no movie.
I read the book and am stunned he was chosen as the lead. It is not funny or comedic although some scense are absurb. We will see the extent of his acting chops. I hope they do not ruin a great story.
Is Steve Carell going down the ‘I’m Adam Sandler and so ingratiatingly cute you just have to love me’ route? Please, no!!
Yay for Nicole. Yay for Jeff. And yay for Corey and Dooma!!! Can’t wait to see it!
Has anyone of you even seen steve acting in a drama before? He’s great! I think you all will be very suprised. I truely believe he can pull this off. Steve was amazing as a suicidal proust scholar in Little Miss Sunshine and also did a great job in Dan in Real Life (which was a bit dramatic too). I can’t wait to see him doing this role.
If the film is not a comedy then Steve Carell will be a good fit
Unless you’ve read the script, you can pretty much shut up. Really? You’ve decided the film based on the logline above? People! Don’t become the thing you’ve lambasted here the most… Read this wonderful script if you get a chance. Carell could be great with the right director guiding him.
While reading the book I pictured John Cusack, but I’m okay with this pick. He can do drama just fine.
