The day, which started great for NCIS, just got even better. Hours after the veteran CBS drama set a new series record in total viewers, 22.9 million, its star Mark Harmon signed a new two-year deal to continue on the hit show. And with him on board, NCIS has been renewed for a ninth season, the first CBS drama to get a pickup for next fall. “It’s simply amazing that a show in its eighth season continues to perform at such an elite level,” CBS Entertainment president Nina Tassler said.
I hear Harmon’s new deal with NCIS producer CBS TV Studios will pay the star more than $500,000 an episode, which is in the range former CSI star William Petersen was at the same point of the veteran forensic drama. And just like Petersen on CSI, Harmon is being upped from producer to an executive producer on NCIS next season. Additionally, he has signed a production deal with CBS TV Studios for his company Wings Prods. which will be housed on the CBS lot. The setup is similar to the deal CSI‘s new star Laurence Fishburne inked last spring.
The deal for Harmon came ahead of schedule unlike the contract negotiations with NCIS co-stars Sean Murray, Michael Weatherly, Pauley Perrette and David McCallum last year, which dragged well into the summer before all 4 closed new two-year pacts to continue on the hit series. With Harmon now set, Cote de Pablo is the only core NCIS cast member without a deal for next fall. Because she joined the show in Season 3, her contract expires at the end of this season.
NCIS, which has been shepherded by executive producer/showrunner Shane Brennan for the past few seasons, premiered on CBS in 2003 as a spin-off of the long-running action/legal drama, JAG. Its ratings have been steadily climbing, cracking the Top 10 in the show’s fifth season. Last season, NCIS became the most watched scripted program on television, with an average audience of 18.9 million viewers. It continues to be No.1 among all scripted shows this season and has actually increased its viewer average to 19.6 million. Additionally, NCIS has been one of the best-performing drama series in off-network syndication, with highly-rated reruns on USA, and internationally.
Harmon, repped by Paradigm and attorney Barry Axelrod, recently unseated Oprah Winfrey as the most popular TV personality in the annual Harris poll.

Loving this a lot.
Love NCIS and all its actors espically Mark Harmon. If the show ever lost him, as well as all the others than the show would die.
I have all the ncis dvd’s except season 8 and 9 but I will have them as well. wish I knew how to get an autograph picture of Mark Harmon.
why not add a new dimension to the NCIS series by allowing Sean Murray to acquire marshal arts skills equivalent to what Matt Damon demonstrated in the Bourne movie series.
Show about a 5 second spot at the end of the weekly drama where Sean Murray enters a marshall arts studio.
You take it from there.
$500,000.00 per episode…reckon I could do it for half that much
And Charlie Sheen is putting the screws to up his already $1.5M per episode? Harmon is a class act.
From one “Jarhead” to another, Good Job Gy Gibbs. Keep firing for effect!!!!—–Semper Fi!!!
I can’t name one person who has ever seen an eps of this show.
Save my grandmother and her husband, neither can I.
That hardly reflects badly on the show, though, does it?
I get all sorts of reasons for bashing a show but “nobody I know watches it” or “old people watch it” (and this particular show has pretty big 18-49 ratings, anyhow) isn’t really any cooler than dismissing an HBO show because only people with cable watch it.
That says more about you and the people you know than about the show.
I’ve seen every episode.
I have seen every episode – Some ten times – Have 85 of them on my DVR and watch my own marathon when the weather is bad and I am off work.
This is how I feel about “Castle” and “Bones.” I don’t know a soul that watches either show.
I’m an avid Bones follower. Never even heard of Castle. But love Bones and NCIS. Both are equally as awesome.
I watch NCIS, Castle and Bones, so yes there are people out there who watch these shows.
You need to know new people.
so what you’re saying is that you’ve been living under a fuckin rock for the past 8 years. Did you read the article? THE MOST WATCHED SCRIPTED SHOW ON TELEVISION. Get your head out of your ass and get some new friends.
change you friends
I have watched this show since day one and it just keeps getting better and better! I’m so psyched Mr. Harmon is on board for another two seasons, because I will watch NCIS as long as he’s there to do it!
Well said, Mr. Harmon’s agent!
Mark Harmon is one of the nicest, classiest people in Hollywood. Having worked with him, I know first hand the level of integrity and class this man operates with and it’s a pleasure to see someone like him do so well. You go Harmon!
My mom still remembers the day I took her to visit the set of “Chicago Hope” and Mark Harmon introduced himself to her. She was tickled pink. He didn’t need to – I was no one important. Real class act and makes me believe that there are still good people in this town.
YES!!! Love everyone involved with NCIS!! Best writers, directors,
and producers!!!! Congrats to all…!!!!!
Congrats to everyone on the show including Mr. Harmon. I’ve watched since season 2 and am just amazed how this show has taken off and become a ratings juggernaut.
Great news!!! NCIS is the very best show on TV, that’s for sure. I never miss an episode!
Gee, if I was CBS I’d be throwing pots of money at Harmon in gratitude for being a pro. Must be a relief after having to deal with all of Sheen’s crap.
Very glad to see that Mr. Harmon will continue on NCIS. Even happier to see the EP title & the development deal. The man appears to be that rare class act – honorable & true. Wish there were more like him in H’wood.
I’m so happy for Mark Harmon. I’ll never forget when I was working in post on Chicago Hope (in a very low-totem-pole role) and I took a friend in from out of town to the Chicago Hope set. Mark introduced himself to us after we observed a rehearsal of a scene from far away- then said “You can’t see much from back here!” and proceeded to take us right up next to the cam ops, then shot the scene right in front of us. He is a classy, top notch guy with no attitude and loads of talent. Hooray for you, Mark. Great to see that being nice and genuine DOES get you rewarded.
Good and solid show, much better than the LA spinoff. I enjoy the Gibbs character and Mark Harmon and Pam Dawber have always seems so authentic and grounded given our celebrity culture. Good news all around, especially given the latest Sheen fiasco.
Whoo-hooo! Over and above how much I love his portrayal of Gibbs, Mark Harmon has a reputation as a hard worker and just an all around nice guy. It’s so nice to see someone who, by all accounts, is the antithesis of a diva doing so well.
Doesn’t hurt that CBS will likely never have to worry about *him* needing rehab.
Congratulations, Mr. Harmon.
Don’t watch a show but comparision to other shows this salary seems very deserving. I just want to know why there is sucha a huge difference between Harmon and Sheen with 0,5 mil and 1,5mil per episode. When Sheen was negotiating new contract he always said “No” or what’s going on?
Sheen gets paid more than Harmon because hit sitcoms make big money in syndication and strong ratings even in reruns. Hour- long dramas seldom get ratings even in network repeats and don’t sell well in syndication, usually ending up on cable rather than a broadcast station.
I’m so pleased Mark Harmon is going to get a salary he deserves and more in line with other big players like Hugh Laurie.
I hope Cote de Pablo isn’t coming back as Ziva and they get someone fresh in to give the show some new plotlines. The Mossad stuff is getting very dreary and the Tiva dreck is even worse.
noooooo I love Ziva, and so do most people.. Hope Cote comes back, especially after all the mossad stuff has pretty much been resolved. If they kill off yet ANOTHER core leading lady, I’ll be pissed.
I agree, Cote de Pablo needs to be replaced-FAST. They should have replaced Sash Alexander with someone who can at least act when the camera’s are rolling. Also she is not a core leading lady?
They pay $500,000 to Makr Harmon and that idiot Charlie Sheen gets $2 million per episode. And then spends it on hookers and spits on everyone who works on the show. Amazing.
Well of course they can pay so much to Sheen because there are only 3 main characters there. And they shoot it all in 2-3 paper made locations. In the shows like NCIS, SCI or Criminal Intent they have to go shooting outdoor. And hire extras. Which is way more expensive. And they have 6-7 main characters. I can only imagine how much cheaper shows like Friends and Two and a half men are. When for years they sit and shoot only in 2-3 rooms.

Not a fan of the show, but I do think Mark Harmon is a good actor. Nice to see he is also a nice guy. The only reason I watch is because (my all-time favorite show) “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” star David McCallum is on. Mr. McCallum seems to be sipping from the fountain of youth. I’m glad he has had success on this show also.
it’s so amazing… since 2003 my friends and I watch every episode and – believe me – it’s not that simple for us in germany to see every new ep… every stop or break of weekly broadcast makes us crazy and sad. what more can a show do? I don’t know any other tv-show or any other actor (mh + whole crew) with potential like this. our congratulations to the show and to you people have this show…
(sorry for my creepy english!)
Well deserved recognition for a classy guy. It’s a hard show to work on, and he is the glue that keeps that cast and crew together. Good on ya Mark.
Mark Harmon as Gibbs and as a man reminds me of the Raymond Chandler observation: “Down these mean streets a man must go who is not himself mean, who is neither tarnished nor afraid. The detective must be a complete man and a common man and yet an unusual man. He must be, to use a rather weathered phrase, a man of honor. He talks as the man of his age talks, that is, with rude wit, a lively sense of the grotesque, a disgust for sham, and a contempt for pettiness.”
Many moons ago I sat and had drinks with Mark and my friend Andrew (also an actor) when Mark was doing a play here in Toronto. He was a class act then and still is today. I love NCIS and watch it faithfully. I’m very happy they’re renewed. Love ya Mark. In fact I love the whole NCIS team. Congratulations.
If you don’t watch the show, don’t post comments just to show how much of a snob you are as if watching these shows like NCIS, Castle and Bones are beneath you. These shows are more entertaining that the “reality” bad acting stuff. So, if you want to look down your nose on these shows and the millions of people who enjoy them, just remove your head out of your massive ass, maybe you’ll get a clearer picture.
