I heard about a few secret layoffs at MGM right before Christmas 2010, and as recently as January 28th. Today, MGM laid off its entire Digital Department before the big move to the studio’s new Beverly Hills location. Post-bankrupt MGM is now under the control of Spyglass Entertainment’s Gary Barber and Roger Birnbaum.
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

Why do they even bother calling it MGM anymore? It should be referred to as Spyglass With Ego.
Douchebag Studios?
40-something in December, 30-something in January and about a dozen today. None were a secret, though. Oh, and the space in BH won’t be ready for quite awhile. This is just the new guys taking a machete to the staffing. In some cases, the cuts make sense. Others, not so much. Same thing happens every time MGM changes hands. Glad to see they have come up with some very original ideas for an upcoming production slate, tho. Huh? What’s that? All those announced films were on Mary’s “To Do” list? Hrmm.
Sorry to be slow, but what do you mean by “digital department”? This encompasses a lot!
It means WEB. ONLINE.
Spyglass is just taking credit for the projects Mary Parent’s team put together (Poltergeist, Robocop) oh wait, they’re adding a few of their own (Mr. Mom, Idolmaker) that are terrible ideas and using MGM money to bankroll their favorite Paramount (does that studio actually make anything themselves anymore?!?) projects
They’re remaking Mr. Mom?
NO WAY! LOLOLOLOLOL
This is true, however the split that they get from those co-financing deals does roll back into MGM, providing it – as Nikki has stated several times – much needed income.
Digital department in the case of Spy Glass and MGM, means their employees that worked on digital distribution for online platforms like Hulu, YouTube and web domain development and design. You think in this day and age they’d want to invest more. Obviously the new Spyglass owners have no idea what they are doing in this sector, with their action today.
But isn’t digital part of marketing and distribution which MGM won’t be handling for their product anyway?
Or MAYBE you mean, “Obviously the new Spyglass owners know that their cofinancing partners will take the reins on digital now, with their action today”.
Digital was the only department where revenues were increasing. Idiots.
one word: outsource
So they think they will make money shooting in 8mm?
Their talented staff will find work and more money elsewhere.
Where is the heart?
There is no heart in “business”.
When your employer announces that it has gone bankrupt, if your next few weeks/months are not spent voraciously doing ANYTHING to find another job, you deserve EVERYTHING that happens to you.
What a juvenile, mean spirited comment “Reality”. Those who remained after bankruptcy had/have high hopes for the future of the Studio and want to be part of something special. It’s not all about having a “job”.
Gee, how come no one was upset when the WGA, SAG and other entertainment unions had lay-offs?
