Deadline/TVLine EXCLUSIVE: Fans’ prayers have been answered – Clark Kent and Lex Luthor will meet again on Smallville. After months of speculation, Michael Rosenbaum just closed a deal to return to the CW series for the May 13 finale, reprising his role as Lex Luthor. Rosenbaum, who left Smallville in 2008 to focus on his writing career, had been courted for awhile to return for the closer. Talks heated up over the past week, leading to the deal which was signed tonight.
“It feels like the stars are aligning, literally. We couldn’t be more excited about having Michael back,” Smallville executive producers/showrunners Kelly Souders and Brian Peterson said. “And as far as the way he returns … there’ll be no doubt about how Lex becomes the great rival in Clark Kent’s life. He is the villain of the story.”
Rosenbaum said he was “delighted” to return for the series finale. “I’m simply doing it for all of the fans out there who made Smallville the great success it is,” he said. “I appreciate all of their passion, their relentlessness and even their threats. Ha ha. I can’t wait to hug the old crew back in Vancouver one last time and see all of my old friends once again….. Oh, and for Lex to become the badass he’s destined to be.”

Awesome!!!
Michael Rosenbaum is the epitome of what a true (actor) villan should be. I was watching this show years ago because I absolutely loved the interaction and tension creating between his character and the others on the show.
I have now doubt the series finale will “rock out” with him back for it. How about that for a creative colliquialism.
Good luck Smallville and Lex Luther cant wait to watch.
Zim
Wow really?.. Cool! Glad Michael Rosenbaum is coming back, and I’ve haven’t giving up on him,but I really thought he was done but Great News – Hes the best role for Lex Luthor I watched the last ending of Superman Returns and that Lex Luthor was terrible so good to have you back Michael!!
I can’t wait. I’ve been praying to the sweet Lord for this day to come. My dreams are coming true. Thank you Rosenbaum you are a scholar and a gentleman. Fans around the world are singing your praises.
YES!!!
THANK GOD!!
Agreed…thank god. He was the best actor on the series. Superboy can’t act to save his life.
But Welling has the charisma to pull this show along. He’s amazing that way.
This is no time for bitterness, little one. Now is the time to celebrate!
Yes, he has charisma, when he doesn’t talk or move. Otherwise it isn’t there. But great news about Michael!
You’re being silly now. Everybody knows Tom Welling has carried this show for 10 years, with his charisma and beautiful performance as Clark Kent.
Agreed as well Yes the other Lex Luthor actors didn’t even come close as Michael did!
glad to hear it for small vile ending would not be the same with out one more meet up with lex and clark after all they started the journey together only natural lex and clark finish the journey can not wait.
Somehow missed the train on this show, but that’s neat that he’s coming back…
I’m glad for all you Smallvile fans, but trust me, God has more important things on His mind than Lex coming back to your show or not.
No, I’m afraid this one was on the top of his list. He watches TV too.
And as for the people like myself who don’t believe in God?
But if you do believe in God, who are you to question his “divine plan” anyway? Maybe this is important, how are you to know?
Not that I watch Smallville, but I couldn’t resist replying…
I think this was supposed to be a big surprise prize. The show and he would deny it until he just showed up in the finale, shocking everyone. However in the last few days, twitter and the geek sites were exploding with rage at the denials, complete with death threats. At that point, I think the show decided to release the info to head off the mushrooming air of violence and rage. It was getting scarily out of hand. Seriously, there were sites with hundreds of posts of pure poisonous rage against Rosenbaum.
I KNOW!!!! I’m a tv writer and a huge fan of Smallville. I have to say, I had some venom in my heart about his not returning. But after seeing ALL, not some, ALL of the post on every story saying he wouldn’t return, I was genuinely concerned someone might shoot the dude.
And while my head would have exploded had I saw it as a surprise in the finale, I am sufficiently giddily happy knowing that scene is a treat to come.
AWESOME!!!!
Thank you Michael Rosenbaum… for giving me a reason to actually watch the finale. Since he left, and coincidentally Gough and Millar, the show has become tedious and poorly written. Let’s hope they dig deep and send it off with style.
You are seriously smoking crack. After his leaving, I thought the show would go downhill. However, I was PLEASANTLY surprised at hw it has gotten even better. Season 9 was off the chain and this year has been ridiculously good, with the 200th episode probably being the best in the series.
The show has become much more than the struggle between Lex and Clark… sometimes it’s a romantic comedy, sometimes it’s a coming of age story, sometimes it’s an action adventure, sometimes it’s a thriller. They really have pushed the limits of this series after Lex for the better. But it is WAY AWESOME that he will return.
Whoo-hoo; awesome
Both “Lex Luthor” and “Michael Rosenbaum” are trending worldwide on twitter right now.
It’s ranking higher than the news from Egypt. I’m glad to know that young people have their priorities in order. ha ha
HELL YES
Thank you Michael! I’m going to cry so hard at the ending of the show. But at least it will feel complete now. Thank you and Smallville for the best Lex Luthor and Clark Kent ever! I’m so pleased at your return Michael and yet so heartbroken at the show’s end. So much emotion in me right now!
It’s great that Michael Rosenbaum is coming back to the show but I am still going to miss the series when it comes to an end.
Golly jeepers such anger. I better click on over to Fat Boy’s aint it cool news and see what all those fan boys are saying about this. Up up and away!
Of course he’s coming back…he hasn’t worked in years.
What a completely harsh and untrue statement. WRITING is work too missy. Why don’t you get over yourself? Give the talented guy a break. He doesn’t need to answer to anybody.
boom. thank god. we need that finale.
I know the storyline…
they both become lovers and live with Elton John for the rest of their days.
The End
You’re supposed to write ***SPOILERS*** and give us fans a chance to be surprised. …However, since you’ve already given away half of it, have they actually signed Elton to appear too?
He only did it because the price was right.
“I’m simply doing it for all of the fans out there”…
(by “fans” he means $$$)
YEAH!!!!! Thank God… I knew you were listening! As an atheist this really confuses me!
Nathen, If God exists, this is supposed to be priority… decease, world hunger, aids, racism, conservatism, liberalism can all wait.
Smallville fans will not!!!!
…and then the rapture occurs on May 12th. Just kidding. This is divine intervention in it’s most brilliant form. Thank you for coming back Michael.
Bieber is the real deal. He is really talented. Usher and Timberlake both wanted to sign him. He is youngest artist since Michael Jackson to hit this big. He is 10 percent legit and just like the Beatles soon the boys and men will realize what the girls already know. He has great people like Scooter Braun and CAA behind him and will easily become a movie star when he decided to focus on it. The fans made him big not some Disney or Nickelodeon machine.
Well, he doesn’t have much else to do these days… unless another animated Flash is coming up?
I just hope that the production is given permission to have Clark suit up and take flight for that last episode. I’m not even sure that WB understands how much the show’s legacy depends on the payoff of that promise.
Judging by last nights episode, it could be quite a finish now that he’s coming back.
