Michel Gondry is adapting and is attached to direct Ubik, the legendary book by scifi author Philip K. Dick. Steve Zaillian and Steve Golin are producing through Film Rites and Anonymous Content, with Golin putting up the financing for development until they shop to studios. (Zaillian’s Film Rites has its first look through DreamWorks, so the project could end up there.) The book was called one of the 100 greatest novels of all-time by Time Magazine. Film Rites’ Garrett Basch will be exec producer. The book is a metaphysical comedy of death and salvation, revolving around dead characters who give business advice, plan their next incarnation, and risk dying once again.
The late author, whose Do Androids Dream of Electric Sleep was turned into Blade Runner, next has The Adjustment Bureau coming with George Nolfi directing Matt Damon and Emily Blunt, and a remake of Total Recall in the works with Colin Farrell starring for director Len Wiseman.

This is a very cool project and sounds super delicious. Hope they make it!
Michel Gondry really good = Spotless Mind, Science of Sleep
Michel Gondry really bad = Be Kind Rewind, Green Hornet
It remains to be seen if a movie attached to Michel Gondry is worth getting excited about. Sorry.
Agreed, and this one could fall into the really, really good category. “Ubik” is one of my favorite books, and Michel could be the perfect guy to take it on.
Michel Gondry = quirky
quirky = Phillip K. Dick
THEREFORE
Michel Gondry = Phillip K. Dick
It’s a mathematical fact this will work. You can’t argue with that.
This seems like a very stylized film project and Michel Gondry has a strong ability to create visually interesting ideas on film…so I am sure he will do really well with this project. I love his music videos (I bought them all) and his films…although I have to say I am not interested at all in seeing The Green Hornet (even for free) and I love super hero films.
I really hope this gets made. Go Michel!
Comparing Spotless/Science to the latter two is a clear indication of what he’s capable of doing. Dick’s novels are not on the level of Be Kind Rewind and I doubt Gondry’s take on any of them would be compared to Green Hornet. Plus, his work in short films and music videos outweigh and outmatch any misses he’s had with features
Not “Sleep”. Sheep. Electric Sheep.
+1
YEEEEEEEEESSS!!! Read this last year and lave been plauging the boards for it to be made. I had my heart set on Aronofsky but if Gondry and remake the magic of Eternal Sunshine, I’ll be impressed.
This is going to be a huge challenge and I’m not sure what is going to be left out.
This novel has one of the most loved final lines of any novel in the 20th century and if done correctly, it could create a fantastic on screen ending that rivals Inception.
Ubik’s Cube?
Which became famous first: Rubik’s Cube or Ubik, the book?
Strange coincidence that P. Dick would have loved.
I’d be more excited if Charlie Kaufman was scripting for Gondry to direct.
with the exception of Fincher, None of these music video guys know how to direct actors.
I understand your scepticism, John Ford, but I kind of think that this story would benefit from a very visual director (former music video director).
Give the novel a chance. It’s a masterpiece and is rightfully regarded as one of the great novels (of any genre)of the 20th century.
James Cameron directed music videos.
Case in point…
Spike Jonze has done a great job with his actors so far.
Ubik is hands down the best of Dick’s books to not yet be adapted. I was in the rare book room at Powells a few years ago and they had a screenplay adaptation by Dick himself. Gondry could be an ideal choice as there is a lot of humor and potential for playing with film stocks and whatnot.
I think the film stocks will be messed around with when the characters regress. This could be really cool with Gondry.
Thanks John Ford, for that post from 1991… Very meta since we’re discussing Dick. “These music video guys”. ROFL
This might sound really premature but:
Joe Chip: Gary Oldman
Glen Runciter: Tom Wilkinson
Supporting characters: Miscellaneous indie actors who have previously worked with GondryL Furlong, Gainsbourg, Ruffalo et al.
I just remembered that Joe Chip is a bit younger.
I’d say Mark Ruffalo for Joe Chip and Tom Wilkinson for Glen Runciter
nice … can see The Reporter’s headline now: “Gondry Decides to Get His Dick On” i actually really liked spielberg’s efforts with “minority report.”
Shouldn’t the headline be “Gondry does Dick”.
Hahahaha
Interesting. Ubik-the-novel is undeniably great. Best of luck making it into a great movie. Mad, bad, sad Dick. This one will be a higher filmic mountain to climb than Bladerunner/Androids.
Arthur C Clarke, and Philip K. Dick they knew how to write good stuff…
But I get worried that those Hollywood Zombies, will make Battlefield Earth Part 2. Or more of the works of LRH.. stuff that sad. Sometimes I don’t know where $cientology begins or L. Ron’s sci-fi crap fest begins… U know what I mean?
This sounds like a fun and ambitious project. And while posters might have noted Michel Gondry’s hit-or-miss track record, it is nice to see Steve Zaillian’s name attached as a producer. As far as I know his track record (mostly as a scribe) is impeccable. Dude’s got ‘mad skillz’ !
Wait, a remake of Total Recall with Colin Farrell? Sigh.
With all the comments about Gondry, Charlie Kaufman, Spike Jones, Fincher…it is important to note that the one person they all have in common is Steve Golin. Golin championed Malkovich and Eternal Sunshine from draft one, day one. No doubt that with Golin producing, the integrity of the book is safe and the film will be Gondry in Eternal Sunshine mode. For the record (whatever record there is), I would vote Golin as the most under-appreciated Producer out there…and anyone that knows Steve knows that I am not Steve writing this.
just found a coin in my pocket with Golin’s head on it. I need a some ubik-uitous spray.
