EXCLUSIVE: MTV is prepping its next pilot – a single-camera comedy about 5 twentysomethings in Chicago from Dirty Sexy Money creator Craig Wright.
Jared Kusnitz, Michelle Ang, Sarah Habel, Inbar Lavi and Diego Boneta have been cast as the leads in the project, which revolves around Lou (Kusnitz), Sofia (Ang), Daphne (Habel), Raviva (Lavi) and Miles (Boneta) – talented best pals who

were confident that they were about to dazzle the universe with their
brilliance on the eve of their college graduation but a year later find themselves going through a series of odd jobs, low-paying gigs, and comical situations – all in an effort to make ends meet. “It is a comedy about the millenial generation’s experience entering young adult life and the workforce in today’s economic climate,” MTV’s head of programming David Janollari said. “It’s about post-college reality versus the amplified expectations… exploring all the firsts from love, family, friends and career in today’s post-Gen X world.”
Wright, an award-winning playwright, has worked on Six Feet Under, Lost and Brothers & Sisters. It was through his stint on Six Feet Under, which
earned him individual Emmy and WGA nominations, that he met Jannolari, whose company with Bob Greenblatt produced the HBO drama. The two remained close and were planning to collaborate on a pilot at the WB but the plan fell through when Janollari departed the network. With Janollari at MTV and Wright having a 21-year-old son, Wright started thinking about the MTV audience and approached Janollari with the idea for Underemployed, which he describes as “a show about kids who can’t find work in their chosen field that addresses the economic difficulties of our rime while reaffirming youth and friendship.” From the get-go, Wright had the lead character, Lou, based on and named after his son, and the closing line in the pilot, which will be said by the show’s narrator, aspiring novelist Sofia. “If life is about making money, we’re all screwed. But if life is about living, then none of my friends are underemployed.”
After a long stint in drama, Wright said he is now focusing on half-hour comedy, which he thinks”makes really good sense for television.” WME-repped Wright recently made the transition on stage with his one-man comedy Mistakes Were Made starring Michael Shannon. Ang, repped by Global Artists and manager Laina Cohn, is now seen in Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son. Habel, repped by APA and manager Cory Concoff, recently shot the lead role in the next installment of the Hostel franchise. Kusnitz, repped by APA and TJ Mcmurdo, recently co-starred in Disney’s Prom.

Sounds exactly like Lena Dunham’s “Girls” (HBO) and the Whitney Cummings’ “Two Broke Girls” (CBS) – not to mention “Don’t Forget The Bitch In Apt. 23″ (ABC)
Yeah…and it sounds EXACTLY like Funemployed-a internet tv show shot in Chicago. FunemployedChicago.com
Such a tender photo.
LOL!
What about the Patito Feo adaption. Is it dead?
Finally, MTV buys something a twenty-something wants to watch…
One year after college life in this economy fast forward 10 years and they are in the same predicament only more in debt and a little bitter. Welcome to the real World kiddos!
Wait don’t steal that idea…I’m going to pitch it to CBS or Lifetime!
MTV needs to make a mark with a scripted show that is theirs and theirs alone. Maybe this is it? Something they develop from the ground up. Something that isn’t racy for the sake of racy, or some Brit or South American adaption of a movie, reboot a animated cartoon, or another import show that never translates well here in the states. They need an original zeitgeisty show that taps into what is really going on out there for teens and twenty-somethings. I wonder if MTV can create an original scripted show that will could ever garner cover of Rolling Stone or Time? Something topical, fresh, edgy. It seems like Jersey Shore and Teen Mom are the only talked about shows at that network. And they are reality drivel. Ratings success yes – but C’mon MTV – looks like you’re just trying to throw everything at the wall to see what sticks. What’s your brand? I don’t get it… do you?
I agree. Some middle ground needs to be found to give this MUMBLECORE waa waa waa im in my twenties genre a spin. I vote for HBO’s Starfucker show or the whitney cummings two broke girls show
ANOTHER ONE OF THESE!???? I’m a 20-something girl “underemployed” in New York City and I still don’t want to see this.
Agreed. I don’t need to watch a reflection of my own underemployed life. This could go they way of “My Generation.”
Stick with the escapist fare. Us young-ins are too moody and depressed as it is.
Why don’t they just go to work as reality contestants on MTV’s The Real World? That is a wonderful job for recent college grads. Or they could be on the Jersey Shore even if they’re not Italian. They are a nicely mixed ethnic group so they got that going for them. But still I don’t understand the problem here when the solution is so obvious. MTV has many fine job opportunities for 20-somethings it’s their primary demographic.
im only going to watch it because Diego Boneta is in it <3 he tweeted this <3
“reality versus the amplified expectations” – and where do those amplified expectations come from? my super sweet 16? the real world/teen mom/et al. making people think they can become famous for doing nothing?
Diego Boneta is the BEST!!!!!
for another comedic take on unemployment check out the blog Bureaucracy for Breakfast on Tumblr
Isn’t this the same thing as the pilot for David Rosen’s “I Just Want My Pants Back”they casted Sunkrish Bala for?
wow DiegoBoneta the best boy .. I can’t wait to see it
Hey MTV: Only young brunettes are unemployed?
I guess cute young blondes ALWAYS find work!
And clearly, no African-Americans are underemployed or unemployed either.
Oh boy. Who gives a rats ass about under-employed college grads? How about OVER-employed college grads. That would be far more cool and interesting.
I like this idea for a show. College guarantees nothing, hopefully this show will inspire people to think outside the academic box.
where’s berlanti?!
This sounds like a great show… Finally a show that actually has a real feel to it.. I am 23, 1 year out of college and I’m 100% underemployed..We are the “lost generation”. When jobs actually come back it will be too late, companies will be going to the fresh college grads and we will be stuck in the gap… FML… At least MTV recognizes this economic failure.
I’m having deja vu. Where have I seen this before? Oh, here:
http://www.youtube.com/funemployedchicago
Wait so it’s like Wonderfalls except without a unique and quirky concept and produced by the people who gave us Jersey Shore? Count me in.
Maybe it’s just because that perfectly describes my situation (Go Wisconsin grad! Go Target employee!) but this definitely seems interesting to me
I love this idea. Oh, wait, I pitched it three years ago. Ahead of my time or just bad at pitching? &$#*
This will be as popular as “Outsourced”. People do not want to watch shows that rub salt in their wounds.
You people are missing the obvious. The show will be a huge success.
Scripts, story line, plots, directing, acting – none of this matters – the cast is hot and thus it will get high ratings.
20 to 1 for whoever wants to bet against it.
Obviously none of you have ever read a PLAY by Craig Wright. He’s effin’ brilliant. Hopefully this’ll Mad Men MTV.
Read once in a while. Sheesh.
