NBC is saddling up for The Crossing, picking up to pilot a period Western from Peter Horton. Additionally, the network has officially greenlit its adaptation of the British classic Prime Suspect, which had been rolled over from last season.
The Crossing (formerly Reconstruction) was originally developed at FX where it was set up in 2009. The drama, written by St. Elsewhere co-creator Josh Brand, is set in a Missouri town during the post-Civil War Reconstruction era and centers on Jason, a Civil War soldier who crosses the country and settles into a complicated town where he is welcomed as its savior — whether he likes it or not. Brand and Horton are exec producing, with Horton set to direct. Also expected to executive produce is Aaron Kaplan, who has been attached to the project from the very beginning. Back in 2009, Horton told me he Brand came up with the idea for Reconstruction while discussing today’s realities: the economic crisis and the situation in the Middle East, including war-ravaged Iraq. “We thought a good way to tell the story would be through the allegory of the Western,” Horton said. “How does one heal after (a war)? How do you find your humanity again?” This is the second period drama pilot ordered by NBC this season, along with the 1960s Playboy.
Prime Suspect, from UMS and ITV Studio, centers on an iconoclastic female detective who has to make her bones in a tough New York precinct that is dominated by men. The pilot was originally picked up last season but was pushed after difficulties casting the lead. The adaptation was also given a revamp with a new producing team, Peter Berg and Sarah Aubrey of Film 44, and new writer, Alexandra Cunningham, coming on board. The three are executive producing the pilot, with Berg also set to direct. The Crossing and Prime Suspect join an untitled comedy pilot from Kari Lizer, which was picked up earlier today as NBC is wrapping its orders.

I am so anxious to see who will be the American Jane Tennison. Peter Berg eh? Connie Britton’s chances just took a big leap forward.
The Crossing sounds very interesting too. I love all these high concept pilots at NBC. They need them.
Oh, and I’m sad they moved Prime Suspect to New York from San Francisco
I’m always skeptical of remakes or endless spin offs, but if LAW & ORDER: UK works, why not try and move PRIME SUSPECT to the US?! May be worth a try. And I’m actually curious about who’s going to get the lead. If it was difficult finding an adequate actress who pleases them all so far, I can’t wait to see who will finally nail it.
I wouldn’t mind most of the names mentioned in the other comments… but how likely is it that they will cast someone who’s currently involved in another crime show (like Mary McDonnell – who I’d love to see in another lead, don’t get me wrong here, she is fantastic on The Closer since they allow her to smile occasionally). Connie Britton, why not?! Although I’d personally prefer to see a 50-something face… Glenn Close, Christine Baranski are both otherwise employed. *LoL* Rene Russo maybe?! Annette Benning, Patricia Clarkson (worth a try?! Glenn Close is doing great on the small screen)?! Katey Sagal?! Meryl Streep is kinda busy I guess.
Bob Greenblatt is picking up some very good shows.
Can anyone say “Under Suspicion” starring Karen Silas?? 12 episodes, Portland 1994??
That was an interesting show. And Karen was HOT.
The Crossing sounds awesome!
It really does. Just hoping it doesn’t end with the last show involving a snow globe!
Hmm. Think about it. What if it turned out that that autistic kid had an INCREDIBLE and extensive snow dome collection. A hilariously touching hospital snow dome AND a western snow dome?! The possibilities are endless!
Another woman selling a pilot?!?! This is GREAT!!! YOU GO, ALEXANDRA!!!
yea keri lizer, she really knows how to do funny!
I do recall at one point Kim Basinger being mentioned for the role Helen Mirren played in the original. Not sure if that was for a TV series or a film franchise. Can’t see Kim playing a role like that but you never know.
Please no Prime Suspect remake! The original was perfect.
I can’t recall seeing ANY western type TV series since ‘Kung Fu’. This sounds interesting,-AND not too similar to ‘Hell on Wheels’.
TV westerns since “Kung Fu” include “The Adventures of Brisco County Jr” on Fox (which ran for one 27-episode season in 1993-1994), “Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman” on CBS (which ran for 6 seasons from 1993-1998), “The Young Riders” on ABC (which ran for three seasons and 68 episodes from 1989-1992 and had a cast that included Stephen Baldwin and Josh Brolin), “Legend” on UPN (which ran for one season in 1995), “The Magnificent Seven” on CBS (which ran for two short seasons in 1998-2000 and had a cast that included Michael Biehn, Eric Close, and Ron Perlman), and of course “Deadwood” on HBO (which ran for three seasons from 2004-2006).
Mary McDonnell (as Jane Tennison)
LOVE Peter Horton! Wish he’d get in FRONT of the camera more often.
Mary McDonnell would be PERFECT as Tennison.
The Western is soooo back! Finally….
Yes Josh Brand is back! he created great shows like Northern exposure, St Elsewhere and I’ll fly away. He is a great writer, finally NBC picking up good pilots, you have David E Kelly wonder women, Prime Suspect, The Crossing, REM (the Inception style cop drama from the guy who created Lone Star), Steven fucking gaghan aslo is back and steven spielberg musical broadway show. This is going to be exciting Pilot season, who said NBC where finished?
Joshua Brand was also behind Northern Exposure which was a great series.
This season’s offering of pilots – the same old. Re-vamps and so many shows believing us ladies want to watch… well, other ladies!
What ever happened to our lead men? Our heroes? Then along comes ‘Crossing’, (a pity, it’s announcement gets linked with and overshadowed by that of Prime Suspect) sounding original and so different from the rest, with it’s promise of western/period drama, action? – hope so! – and angsty stuff. All you need now is a Clint Eastwood type lead… someone with that world weariness. Try Joe Flanigan and this would be perfect for me! But I’m biassed! Whover you chose, I know this is the one pilot I’m looking forward to seeing and wish it every success.
Joe Flanigan is a perfect choice
“Crossing” sounds really promising. Horton has always been great with actors, and the episodes and pilots he directs are usually a couple levels up from the rest of the shows of a given series.
Finally a western. Horray for NBC.
Connie Britton is free now for ‘Prime Suspect’ and Kyle Chandler for ‘The Crossing’. ‘FNL’ forever!!
I could see NBC casting Jennifer Aniston in Prime Suspect — NBC pedigree, big name, and against type.
And unbelievably stupid. a typical NBC move. I could totally see that.
YOU MAY HAVE SEEN SOME OF THEM, I DID see some of those shows, what I meant to say was that I have’nt seen anything since ‘Kung Fu’ that I LIKED ENOUGH TO KEEP WATCHING. One exception is ‘Dr Quinn Medicine Woman, which I did watch more than once. My previous post is like a Freudian Slip, no suprise to me considering how forgetable some show’s are. Maybe if I ate more junk food before posting…?
Poor man’s Hell On Wheels anyone?
Love the idea of Prime Suspect. Mary McDonnell, please. No contest. Check out her work on The Closer and you’ll see why. (not to mention everything before)
Mary McDonnell MUST do PRIME SUSPECT. That would be the bomb!
MARY MCDONNELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She has to!
