TUESDAY AM: I’m told that actuals show Dark Castle/Warner Bros’ Unknown won Presidents Day Weekend with $25.450 — but it was very, very close with Disney’s Gnomeo & Juliet which ended with $25.415M. DreamWorks/Touchstone/Disney’s I Am Number Four finished with $22.7M. Sony’s Just Go With It took in $21.5M. New Regency/Fox’s Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son made $18.7M.

I Am Number 4 is just a reminder that Disney is no Paramount. They need a digital guru like Amy to open DW movies.
Maybe the should have titled it “I am Number 1″?
yeah, the title genuinely reminds “Number 4, Privet Drive” )
That hack James Frey told the world he was going to write a Twilight/Harry Potter ripoff. He did, then got Hollywood to shower him with money to make it into a movie. Now Hollywood is SHOCKED that the world isn’t interested in seeing a movie they know to be a Twilight/Harry Potter ripoff! I have no doubt Frey will be able to get Hollywood to shower him with money again for whatever his next flimflam scam is, because Hollywood is just that dumb.
Spot on. And the worst part of his flimflam is he DIDN’T EVEN WRITE THE RIPOFF!!!
He came up with the “idea” of ripping off Harry Potter/Twilight in the most generic, derivative way possible — then had someone else write it for free and he took the money.
He is a snake oil salesman, except snake oil salesman peddle harmless product and make people feel good about something in exchange for their money — unlike “I am Four” which makes people feel very stupid they just shelled out $12 to be treated like stupid cattle.
I am number 4 is amazingly good — great action, romance — great fun.
If you genuinely thought that, and you are above the age of 12, then all I can say is Wow. Everyone else I know who shelled out cash for that trash wants their money back, including me, who was dragged to it because a friend had a crush on that Pettyfer guy. She doesn’t anymore, the movie (and his wooden performance) beat it out of her. What derivative, poorly-acted, and poorly-written drivel.
Doesn’t it seem like every time Disney is neck-and-neck with another studio for the #1 spot, Disney always loses?
i’m sure they’re fine with being neck and neck no matter the outcome.
Unknown had unbelievable marketing and a fantastic trailer. From the amount of Unknown billboards and Unknown bus stops, all the way down to the design of the poster, that marketing team deserves a mansion-party thrown for them by Joel Silver, at his mansion. Great, Joel does it again! Dark Castle’s coming out party! sigh…
Let’s give credit where it’s due: Liam Neeson, hope you are getting 95% of the profits. My fellow Swiss, Bruno Ganz, who stole every scene, rock on! Mr. Collet-Serra, for the awesome action scenes, amazing car chase, the dash of Hitchcock seasoning, and overall solid directing that saved the movie from… wait for it… a weak plot twist, terrible writing in general, and awful dialogue combined with awful acting (mainly from the actresses). Diane Kruger, poor girl, couldn’t get an accent coach from the production? If I told my 7 year old nephew to do a Bosnian guy, he would sound like Kruger and he thinks Bosnia is at Disneyland. However, other than the accent, I thought she was good. January Jones had a very one-noted, boring performance in what probably was her best film role. To the writers/script doctors: SHOW me the movie! instead of having Frank Langella your outline.
Jaume Collet-Serra saved House of Wax, saved Orphan, and saved Unknown from suicide. No wonder why Joel won’t let go of his wrist.
But wait, if you aren’t a 10 year old girl with Bieber-fever, what else were you going to watch this weekend?
Agreed, they did an excellent job marketing the film. All of the male actors were good. I loved the scene between Langella and Ganz. If the script had been better (and the female roles a little more developed), it could have been a fantastic film. It was still very enjoyable, good directing and Liam Neeson was great!
