EXCLUSIVE: When you come out of nowhere and turn in an Oscar nominated breakout performance like Hailee Steinfeld did as Mattie Ross in the Joel and Ethan Coen-directed True Grit, it’s natural for the studio involved to do its best to keep you in the fold. Paramount Pictures has just closed a deal for screen rights to Forgotten, a novel by Cat Patrick that will be published by Little Brown in June. The book will be crafted as a star vehicle for the 14-year old Steinfeld, with Fake Empire’s Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage producing. It’s the first studio deal for Steinfeld since she was nominated for Best Supporting Actress.
Steinfeld will play London Lane, a 16-year old whose memory is erased at 4:33 every night. The following morning, all she can remember are events from her future. After meeting a new boy at school, London becomes frustrated that she can’t seem to find him in her memory of things to come. The project was packaged by ICM, which reps Steinfeld along with Coast-to-Coast. The book deal was brokered by ICM with Writers House.

To Whomever Runs Hollywood,
Please stop using amnesia as a plot device in movies. It’s the most overused and hacky idea for a film. No matter how many ways you tweak it, it rarely works.
Signed,
Hurley
Dear Hurley,
Wow, I never thought of it that way, but I guess you’re right. I promise from here on out to ban any movies with amnesia as a plot device.
Besides, our internal polling suggests amnesia isn’t tracking well with our target audience of adolescent males, and it’s a concept that doesn’t translate well to 3D or the plastic toy and video game-based movies we’ll be focusing on exclusively for the foreseeable future.
Thanks for the great advice!
The Master of Hollywood
IMPOSTOR! Thats some funny sh*! right there master of hollywood.
Thanks Master of Hollywood.
And while I have your ear, could you get rid of Katherine Heigl? Thanks.
Hurley.
Can we get rid of you instead?
Dear Hurley how about you shut up? Forgotten is an amazing book, read it then eat your silly comment along with the embarrassment and stupidness you feel after reading it!
Um, wow – that actually sounds a really cool book. #nosnarkFriday?
Yeah I know i read the book then i heard it was going to be made a movie i was sooo excited but im not soo sure i am about Hailee Steinfeld playing London she dosent even have red hair i say choose a real true born Red Head.
Like this is not derivative. Shocked it’s not a 16 year old vampire whose memory is erased at 4:33 every night!
Excellent point — but there’s one other plot device you left off: whether or not the events of the movie ever actually happened. Just tack that on to your amnesiac vampire hunter idea and watch the studio execs start to DROOL!!
all that…meets Superbad!
Nice! 50 First Dates with a twist.
It’s a great idea only one problem she’d never be able to pass any test in school she’d fail every test because she wouldn’t be able to remember anything she learned previously. This movie was funny when Dana Carvey did it in Clean Slate. London Lane would be out of school after one semester she’d get all F’s and her parents would be taking her to brain surgeons for mri and cat scans. The poor girl would not be able to get into college she would score a zero on her SAT’s. That’s a much more interesting movie how can a girl who seems so smart and bright be so dumb at test time?
You do not seem to know very much about amnesia if you want to know more perhaps google it because it is very interesting.
BUT she does remember the future. So maybe she remembers all the answers to the tests?
I’m sure that the author long since considered this problem and fixed it.
I’ve read the book. You are wrong. The writer leaves more holes than a giant swiss cheese in this.
Five bucks says she ends up being cast in “Fun Size” for Josh too. Funny script.
Willing suspension of disbelief alert.
“The following morning, all she can remember are events from her future. After meeting a new boy at school, London becomes frustrated that she can’t seem to find him in her memory of things to come.”
Do those sentences even make sense? Is this pulled straight from the coverage?
Of course it makes sense she remembers the boy but it’s really a psychic vision of the future that she will meet him. He doesn’t like her he thinks she’s weird because she tells him they’re destined to be together but he only has the hots for a blond cheerleader. Now get out onto the field and start running laps you lazy sack of crap and after you run five miles give me 200 pushups.
No, i’ve got the book, its about a 16 year old girl who sometimes gets visions of her future but cant remember the past. When she meets the boy she cant find him in her memories of the future. But he knows she can’t remember (Even though she dosent know he knows) and they become boyfriend and girlfriend!
Sounds intriguing and the Savage/Schwartz team can get it done. Really, though, I was kinda hoping to see her up for The Hunger Games. The lead part of Katniss Everdeen is QUALITY.
I’m not going to lie, I hope this prevents her from getting the role of Katniss. Jodelle Ferland as Katniss!
Jodelle Ferland is too young and cannot act.
well, Jodelle is actually older then Hailee, so…
Hailee is kind like a way younger Ellen Page…
I’m just wating her to do pregnant teen on Lifetime Tv. Mom at Sixteen 2 : Pregnant in Juneau. Sure she has tallent. But tallent isn’t hard to come by… Just look at Yestin cough! cough! cough! Excuse me, Justin Bieber! He’s on CSI, Canada Scene Investagation.
Hailee should have Jodie Foster play her mother…
That’d B cool Ya’ll… Ole Skool!
You could have plugged any precocious young actress into that part and come out with an Oscar nom.
Well, yeah that’s true, but the thing is that SHE got the part and SHE got nominated, and just because it’s an Oscar-worthy role doesn’t mean she doesn’t deserve recognition for it. Besides, it’s not like we know what the movie would have been like with a different actress, so it doesn’t matter who else could have done it well. The end result is what we judge, and she did a great job.
I Love Amnesia as a consept in movies but the thing i love about forgotten is that she remembers the future I Recon thats awesome please do a good job on Forgotten as i love the book.
Amazing book.
Not sure how I feel about it becoming a movie though. But then again, Hollywood has been slaughtering good literature for years now…
Zac Efron is perfect for the part. If they choose a boy who is not completely gorgeous than the movie will suck.
Zac Efron is perfect for the part!! wen will this movie be coming out??
THE WRITER IS THE MOST AMAZING PERSON IN THE WORLD THANK YOU VERY MUCH (sure it a matter of opinion, but she’s a great person and I personally think she’s a great writer)
i love this book SO SO SO much!! So it is true that it will be a movie!!
Im from Australia so when will it be available for me to watch it.
Thanks, Dancer 123. <3
