I’m told that Paramount Pictures has chosen Jon M. Chu to direct G.I. Joe 2, the sequel to G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. Chu just made the studio a pile of dough with Justin Bieber: Never Say Never. The competition came down to Chu and Gary Gray. Production will begin in the fall. Chu is repped by WME and Principato Young. I’m told they are working out his deal, but that he’s been told he is the choice. Lorenzo di Bonaventura is producing. The next task will be to figure out which cast members are returning. I’ve heard the studio is starting with Channing Tatum, and trying to work out a deal for him to reprise.

Genius idea Paramount – go with the director of Step Up 3D and the Bieber movie – that will surely win back the fan boys you lost with the first one. What a terrible decision
I’d have like it if Dennis Quade had actualy BEEN joe rather than a groupe of joes that was my only bug-bare apart from that it did what it said on the tin so to speak, would have liked f. gary to direct part 2 but only because Friday is one of my top 10 all time favs but that’s just me i think (hope not tho) and the rest of grays work i just like so would have been fun to see what he could do maybe part 3
I remember thinking “how could this possibly be worse than Transformers?” Well, congratulations, universe. You win.
Glad to see they’re moving forward with #2. The successful box office of the first GI Joe–in spite of a TERRIBLE story–shows there’s a market for this franchise. That said: there is nothing in Chu’s resume that suggests he can handle a big-budget action movie. Hollywood continues to hire people for the wrong reasons–they’ve worked with them before, they’re rep’d by people who also rep the stars, or they’re cheap.
Chu could pull off GI Joe #2, but IMO F.Gary Grey would have been a better choice from their short list. And, of course, The Best director for GI Joe #2 would have been Bryan Singer.
As for the cast: I can’t believe Paramount doesn’t have all of the “Joe’s” signed to multiple-picture deals: Channing Tatum (Duke), Rachel Nichols (Scarlett), Marlon Wayans (Rip),Dennis Quad (Gen Abernathy/Hawk), Said Taghmaoul (Breaker), Ray Park (Snake Eyes), and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Heavy Duty).
With the exception of Tatum & Nichols, the principal cast don’t seem to have full dance cards; so signing them shouldn’t be a problem. Therefore, going after Tatum first, then probably Nichols (who is currently shooting a TV series, Criminal Minds) makes sense. And the conversations most probably are around “timing” and “schedules”–not money or “if” they will come back.
The real casting question is who #2 will have as villains. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is (for reasons I don’t understand) in great demand for all kinds of roles and may not be available to reprise his “Rex/Cobra” role. But, as has been pointed out: he’s in a mask, so getting another actor is no problem. As for Ana/The Baroness, although Sienna Miller is very popular, I haven’t seen her name attached to a lot of upcoming deals, so she should be available. And finally, I’ve read that although he died in #1 they want Byung-hun Lee back as Storm Shadow.
That said,my recommendation is to go with all new villains–and cast them with people who have strong action film cred.
So a major story line will be the don’t ask-don’t tell situation for the Joe’s? Fabulous!
gi joe was crap. just reboot that franchise. if they can reboot a successful franchise like spiderman, they cant do worse than gi joe.
This should have been F. Gary Gray’s movie. He makes fun movies. He gets how to entertain an audience and tell a story. GI JOE basically is what it is, but with FGG it’d be a whole lot better than it really should be. Paramount’s blockbusters are usually pretty slocky (Transformers, Air Bender, Iron Man 2) and this franchise doesn’t look much different – but that shouldn’t stop the studio from trying to make a better movie. That starts with a better script and leads to a solid director. The script is probably crap and I wouldn’t be surprised if F. Gary came in with a bunch of ideas that were smart for the studios vision of this vapid franchise. On to better things for Gray – he’s better than this movie will ever be.
Does anyone know what happened to Sommers? Did he get fired? He had to have had a deal for the sequel. I know the studio hated him and found him impossible to work with but did they have to throw him a bone? Also, isn’t Chu represented by Sommer’s ex Agent. lol He must be smiling big time.
Not sure about this. The first one was just about a perfect “G.I. Joe” movie. It certainly satisfied this life-long fan. Paramount should have kept Stephen Sommers. But why does the studio need to negotiate a deal with Channing Tatum, or the rest of the cast? Everybody was signed on for a series of film’s when they did the first, so there shouldn’t need to be any deals. Everything for the cast has been in place since the first movie.
EPIC FAIL!
I guess Paramount is run by a bunch of brainless monkeys.
Now, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra was a pretty awful movie, but I guess it wasn’t awful enough for Paramount. So, they hired the worst possible choice to direct the sequel.
I can’t wait for the epic dance battle at the end of the movie. Cobra got mad skillz, yo!
It’s hard to say how he will do, he could turn out to be genious with it. I am very interested that they are putting Marissa Fairborne’s character in Transformers 3, whom just happens to be the daughter of one of the Joe’s in the original GI Joe story line, and led to a cameo appearance in the original Transformers series of Cobra commander. Anyone else interested now? I might be mistaken, nut I think she was the daughter of FLint? To tired to look it up now, and too long ago to remember for sure.
according to Korean media that Byung-hun Lee wants back as Storm Shadow although he died in #1. He wanted back since one year ago and pushed paramount to hire him. Korean media had reported that he would start shooting gi joe 2 last Summer.
I think that was one of the reasons they hire an Asian director. No American director would like to deal with this kind of stupid story line.
Umm…John Chu is an American.
Sorry, correct spelling is JON Chu.
Hate to break it to all of you Jon Chu haters, but while the movies he’s done may not have been the most wanted to be seen by the general public, look at his work with 3D. If you haven’t noticed, movies are moving to being 3D and Jon has mastered the technique. Also, for all of you who are saying that Chu doesn’t have what it takes, then why is he being awarded the 2011 Pioneer Prize at the International Digital Emmy Awards and said to be “one of the most up & coming directing talents of our time” by the President & CEO of the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. Don’t get me wrong, I think Gary Gray is a great director and has had some excellent movies, but Chu does deserve this opportunity.
Will this movie be for teens with PG rateing?
The first G.I. Joe for me was like a train wreck, so horrible that I couldn’t look away. It actually made me angry for even spending one dollar to get it on Redbox, I could’ve used that dollar to get something worth my time. A sequel to that? Really?
wow this is just sad, now bieber will guest star with crappy acting from tatum. Here’s in idea let make a movie that I don’t want me to kill myself. This franchise is like the Titanic look good in 80′s then sail off pick up speed in 2000′s with 1st movie and now hit a iceberg(cho). Thanks for running my childhood.
I think the director of the next G.I. Joe film is less important than the script. I have been a fan of the G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero characters ever since Hasbro — and, more importantly, Marvel Comics — introduced them in 1982. I didn’t hate The Rise of Cobra, but I didn’t love it, either. I saw it as a tremendous waste of an opportunity. Comics fans have loved the Joes for almost thirty years now. Some of the top writers in the industry have tackled these characters. Recent years have seen the writing take on a maturity that fits the new milennium, as opposed to the watered-down, let’s see how many toys we can sell effort we saw in theatres two summers ago. My advice? Read the comics and make the best movie possible — not the best movie for kids, but the best movie. The last Joes we saw were fully poseable but barely passable. Have some courage and make a smart, tough, funny, violent, realistic action pic — and make sure we’re watching characters up on the screen, not action figures.
Honestly the movie wasn’t awful but if it wasn’t for the humor that Marlon Wayans(which they need to bring back) brought as Ripcord and the storyline of Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow i wouldn’t even have given this movie a chance. As far as everyone speaking on the director…getting someone who Directed anything with Bieber or any dance movie is a mistake in itself, if they want to guarantee sell out shows and $200 or $300 million made back in sales you spend some money and get the master of making that happen Michael Bay…
who really gives a fuck
if you dont like it, then dont go see it
and if you did like the first, go see the 2nd
but instead you got a bunch of douch bags in here that sit at the computer and think that the neg. remarks theyput down are
really gonna change someones mind from seeing it
come on get a fucking life!!!
i didnt enjoy it as much as the cartoons or the animated movie
but it was worth the money to see it
for any true g.i. joe fan and i will see the next one
so fuck iron man, transformers, and gary gray “the only good movie he done was friday and that was with cubes help”
A lot of haters here. Not sure what people expected from the movie but for an action movie I’ve seen worse. Were they put off the joe won? They always win, cobra commander always runs off with his tail between his legs. Too unbelievable?? Watch the news if you want to see real life fighting or maybe the Bourne movies, if that’s your thing. I want super weapons and super bad ass fighters.
Duke was right bunch of wannabes sitting in front of their computers arm chair coaching what should have been or what could have been.
Go make your own movie if it’s so easy.
